This guide is for companies in Oberhausen that work in English, or need to: logistics firms near the motorway junction, engineering consultancies, hotels and restaurants that host international exhibition guests, and founders who moved to the Ruhr and now run a business in German. It walks through the decisions behind web design Oberhausen companies actually face, in the order they come up.
We, Talha Aslan and team, wrote each section so that it ends in something you can check, decide or ask a provider. Where German law sets the rules, we say so plainly and point you to a lawyer for the final wording.
01The Job a Website Does in Oberhausen's Economy
In Oberhausen a website has to serve two audiences at once: residents who need a reliable local business, and a steady stream of visitors drawn by shopping, exhibitions and concerts. Destatis counted 213,646 residents at the end of 2024, and the Federal Employment Agency reported 69,927 jobs subject to social insurance at workplaces in the city in June 2024.
On top of that, the Neue Mitte brings people in from across the region. Westfield describes Centro as the largest shopping center in Europe; next to it stand the Gasometer, which has welcomed more than 10 million visitors across 18 exhibitions since 1994, and an arena for up to 12,700 people. Before any design work, decide in writing which of these jobs comes first:
- Local customers: call, book or get directions, all within the first screen on a phone.
- Day visitors: current hours, the walk from the Neue Mitte, parking and a short English summary.
- Business buyers: scope, capacity, certifications and a quote form a procurement team can use without phoning.
- International recruits: a careers page in English for drivers, warehouse staff and engineers.
The job you put first decides the home page and the first menu item. A site that tries to give all four equal weight usually serves none of them well.
02Search Intent in Oberhausen: Who Looks for What
Most local searches in Oberhausen combine a service with a district, and most are typed in German even by people who live their working day in English. Someone new to the city searches "Zahnarzt Sterkrade" because that is what neighbors recommended, while a visitor searches "restaurant near Gasometer" in English.
Sort the searches that matter to you into four groups, because each needs a different answer on the site:
- Near me searches: decided mostly by the map listing and the address on your site.
- District searches: Holten, Schmachtendorf, Königshardt, Alstaden or Lirich combined with a trade.
- Event driven searches: food, hotels and parking before a Gasometer exhibition, an arena concert or the short film festival.
- Business searches: freight routes, warehouse space or engineering services, often from outside Germany and in English.
The Internationale Kurzfilmtage, founded in 1954 and regarded as the oldest short film festival in the world, is a good example of an English search window. Festival guests look for places to eat, stay and meet, and they search in their own language. Mark these weeks in a content calendar and update the relevant pages ahead of time. After launch, compare your assumptions with the real queries in Search Console and adjust.
03Working With a Team Outside Germany, Done Properly
A search for web design Oberhausen lists local agencies first, yet a team outside Germany works just as well when every step is written down and visible. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul; we have no branch, representative or staff in Germany, and we say so at the start rather than in the small print.
Whichever provider you consider, ask for these before you sign:
- A written scope: one document with the page list, languages, forms, integrations and who supplies the legal texts.
- A live preview: a working staging address you can open on your own phone, not a static image.
- Video calls with screen sharing: for the kickoff, the design presentation and the launch.
- A visible project log: progress tracked in a CRM so status questions have a clear answer.
- Native German review: German copy checked by a native speaker before it goes live.
The time difference is small. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours ahead in winter, so a call before your opening hours or in a quiet afternoon slot is easy to arrange. English works fine as the project language; German content is handled as a separate, checked deliverable.
04Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts in Your Name
Ownership is easy to overlook in a web design Oberhausen project, yet every digital asset of the site should be registered to your company from day one, so that the site stays yours if you ever change provider. For an Oberhausen business the domain is usually a .de address; register it through a registrar account that you control, with your own login.
Use this handover checklist:
- Domain: the .de registration in your company's name, with the registrar account tied to your e-mail address.
- Hosting: a server inside the EU, with the contract in your name or a written transfer procedure.
- Code and content: a full backup you can download and move to another host.
- Google accounts: you hold the owner role in Search Console, Analytics and the Business Profile; the agency gets manager access only.
- Business e-mail: mailboxes on your domain, with the sending records documented.
Because the hosting company processes personal data for you, Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO in German) requires a data processing agreement with it; most hosts provide one as a standard document. We open accounts in your name during setup and list every login in a handover document, which becomes the reference when someone asks years later who has access to what.
05The Project Step by Step, Fully Online
Our web design Oberhausen projects run online from first call to launch, with your sign off at the end of each stage. If your travels take you to Istanbul, we are happy to meet at our office in Ataşehir; it is entirely optional and no part of the project depends on it.
- Kickoff call: what you sell, to whom, and how customers find you today.
- Written scope and quote: pages, languages, forms and timeline in one document.
- Content collection: a shared folder for photos, service details and legal text drafts.
- Design on a staging address: the first pages, viewable on your phone.
- Revision rounds: your comments in writing, changes shown on the same preview.
- Launch: redirects, measurement and the consent banner checked before the switch.
- Training: a screen shared walkthrough of the content editor and a short written guide.
For an overview of what the build includes, see our web design service. We put options in front of you in writing, with their trade offs, and you make the decisions. That is especially useful for international teams where the person who signs off is not always the person who attended the call.
06Local SEO in Oberhausen: Map Listing and Real Districts
Local visibility starts with your Google Business Profile and your website saying exactly the same thing. Google's guidelines require the business name to match the real world name, with no added keywords; address, phone and opening hours should match letter for letter across the profile, the site and the directories.
Oberhausen has three boroughs: Sterkrade in the north, Osterfeld in the east and the old city center in the south. Name only the areas you genuinely serve. A plumber working in homes can list Holten, Schmachtendorf and Königshardt; a store on Marktstraße should describe its own address, public transport and parking instead.
- Categories: pick the primary category for your core business and keep secondary ones to services you really offer.
- Directories: keep Gelbe Seiten and Das Örtliche entries identical to your profile.
- Reviews: send a short link after an invoice or appointment; never offer discounts for reviews.
- Replies: answer reviews in the language they were written in, briefly and calmly.
If customers also come from Duisburg, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen or Bottrop, say so clearly on your service pages. Near duplicate pages for each neighboring city, with only the name swapped, are what Google treats as doorway pages. For ongoing work, our SEO service tracks local visibility with a monthly report.
07Languages: German First, English Where It Earns Its Place
German stays the main language of every web design Oberhausen project, because German customers, authorities and the legal pages expect it. English, and sometimes Turkish, is added when a real audience exists, and each language gets its own addresses.
English pays off in a few clear cases here. Logistics firms near the A2 and A3 junction serve shippers across Europe; engineering and energy consultancies around Fraunhofer UMSICHT work with partners abroad; hotels and restaurants host exhibition and festival guests; and many expat founders want their own customers to read the site in English. Turkish makes sense when a significant share of your customers speaks it, especially in services built on trust.
- Separate URLs: for example an English folder under your domain; never mix two languages on one page.
- hreflang: each language version references the others and itself, so Google shows the right one.
- Legal pages: the Impressum and privacy policy stay in German and are linked from every language.
- Localization: English pages answer the questions an international buyer asks, not a word for word copy.
Our multilingual website page explains the structure in detail. Keep the second language maintainable: when German hours or services change, the English page changes the same day. An outdated English page costs more trust than having none.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
A page that loads slowly on a phone sends a visitor at the Neue Mitte to the next restaurant within seconds. Google's Core Web Vitals set the "good" thresholds at the 75th percentile: LCP, which measures how fast the largest content element loads, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, which measures how quickly the page reacts to a tap, at 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS, which measures layout shift, at 0.1 or less.
On concert and exhibition days the mobile network around the arena gets crowded, and a lean page matters most exactly then. Check these before you accept delivery:
- Images: compressed formats such as WebP, served at their real display size.
- Fonts: hosted on your own server; a Munich regional court awarded damages in 2022 over Google Fonts loaded without consent.
- Server: located in the EU, with a current PHP version and automatic backups.
- Certificates and updates: SSL renewing automatically and plugins kept current.
- Admin access: two factor login, no shared accounts, and forms protected against spam.
Run your current site through our mobile friendly test before the first call; it gives the conversation a concrete starting point. Test a backup restore at least once a year so you know it actually works.
09Sector Examples Specific to Oberhausen
Oberhausen's business life clusters around retail, leisure, logistics and research, and each needs a different site structure. The examples below are typical needs drawn from the city's economy, not client stories.
- Freight and warehousing: the Oberhausen business development agency OWT reports a SEGRO logistics park of around 117,000 square meters near the A2 and A3 junction, with a possible link to the Duisburg port. Firms here need routes, fleet, storage space, certifications and a short quote form in English and German; see our logistics company website page.
- Hotels and guesthouses: room pages, arrival by train and car, and an English summary for Gasometer and arena guests; details on the hotel website page.
- Stores around Centro: your own product pages, offers and other branches, instead of being one listing among hundreds in the mall directory.
- Engineering and energy consultancies: concise technical summaries of reference projects and competence areas for decision makers abroad.
- Film, media and event businesses: an English portfolio and a date enquiry form that work for international festival contacts.
Whatever the sector, answer the most frequent customer question on the first screen. For a carrier it is "which routes", for a restaurant "are you open today", for a venue "is that date free".
10Legal Basics for a Website in Germany
Any business website operating from Oberhausen falls under German law, even if most of its pages are in English. The points below are general information, not legal advice; have the final wording checked by a lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: § 5 DDG, the German Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG) that replaced the TMG in May 2024, requires a legal notice with name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register entries.
- Privacy policy: forms, analytics or embedded maps that process personal data require a GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, cookies that are not strictly necessary may only run after the visitor agrees.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz covers many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises providing services are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: the final order button must state the obligation to pay, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need cancellation information.
We build the technical side: page placement, the consent banner and locally hosted fonts. We do not draft the legal content itself. For international companies used to a simple privacy link in the footer, plan this as its own work package with its own owner.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
The biggest risk in a relaunch is that addresses Google already knows lead nowhere on the new site. A service page that has ranked for "Sterkrade" searches for years loses that visibility if it is deleted without a redirect.
- Inventory: list every old URL and the pages that earn clicks in Search Console.
- Mapping: assign each old URL the closest new page; our redirect mapping tool speeds this up.
- 301 redirects: activate permanent redirects on launch day, without chains.
- Monitoring: watch the indexing and error reports in Search Console for the first two weeks.
- Profile links: point the Business Profile and directory entries to the new addresses.
Keep the staging site out of search with password protection rather than robots.txt, because Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page it is blocked from crawling. A relaunch is also a chance to merge thin or overlapping pages into one strong page per service, with the old URLs redirected to it.
12Common Mistakes on Oberhausen Business Sites
A handful of mistakes come up again and again on business sites in the city, and almost all are easy to fix. Compare your own site with this list:
- Conflicting hours: different opening times on the site, the map listing and the Centro directory; keep one source and update all three from it.
- English only: an expat founded firm with no German pages; add German as the main language and keep English as the second.
- Thin Impressum: a phone number and nothing else; provide everything § 5 DDG asks for.
- Tracking before consent: analytics and ad tags firing on page load; install the consent banner first and let tags wait for it.
- Copied city pages: one page per neighboring city with only the name changed; describe your real service area on one page.
- Missed event weeks: pages not updated before a big exhibition or the festival; keep a yearly content calendar.
Most of these are process problems, not design problems. Agree in writing who updates hours, who updates legal texts with your lawyer, and who handles technical updates.
13What Drives the Budget
Our prices do not depend on the city; web design Oberhausen clients choose from the same packages as our customers in Turkey. What moves the budget is scope, not location.
- Number of languages: each extra language means its own copy, review and hreflang setup.
- Selling online: a shop with cart, payment and German compliant checkout steps is a separate item; see our e-commerce development.
- Integrations: booking, freight quote calculators or CRM connections widen the scope.
- Content preparation: whether you or we write copy and source photos changes the effort.
- Page depth: a page per service takes more work than one general page, and usually performs better.
Ask any provider for an itemized quote: design, content, translation, shop setup, hosting and maintenance on separate lines. That lets you discuss each item and postpone some, such as a second language, to a later phase. Ask too what maintenance covers after launch: updates, backups and small content changes.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The value of a web design Oberhausen project shows in the three months after launch, so plan that period as carefully as the build. If measurement runs with visitor consent, you can see clearly which pages bring searches and which forms bring real enquiries.
- Weeks one and two: check indexing, redirect errors and mobile issues in Search Console.
- Month one: align the Business Profile and directory entries, send the first review requests.
- Month two: improve titles and descriptions on pages with many impressions and few clicks.
- Month three: prepare pages for the next exhibition or festival, and decide on a second language or a shop phase.
Count calls, form submissions and direction requests separately, and log each enquiry with its source. To see which package fits your Oberhausen company, look at our pricing section. To agree on scope, leave a short message through our contact form; we schedule a video call at a time that suits you and send the scope and quote in writing.
