Engagement Rate: A More Honest Metric Than Follower Count
Engagement rate (ER) shows how much of an account's audience actually interacts with its content and is calculated as (average likes + average comments) / followers × 100. Follower counts can be bought, inflated with giveaways or made up of long-inactive audiences; engagement is the signal of a living one. That is why an account with 20 thousand followers and around 5 percent engagement often produces more real impact than one with 100 thousand followers and half a percent.
In influencer selection, ER is the fastest first filter to apply before committing budget. Average the likes and comments of each candidate's last 10-12 posts and compare the resulting rates with accounts in the same follower segment; nano and micro accounts naturally run higher, so measuring a 5K account against a 500K one with the same bar is misleading. Add comment quality next to the number: are these real sentences, or single-emoji filler?
ER is also a strong fake follower signal. A rate conspicuously low for the follower count, likes with almost no comments, or a sudden follower jump without matching engagement should raise the possibility of purchased followers or bots. It is not definitive proof on its own, but it is the most practical way to clean a shortlist before a collaboration.
