An XML sitemap presents the addresses of your important pages to search engines in a single file, so Google and Bing discover your pages faster and more completely. For new sites, pages with weak internal linking and large content archives especially, a sitemap directly affects crawl and indexing speed. After generating the file, upload it to your site root (e.g. yourbrand.com/sitemap.xml), add it to robots.txt with a Sitemap: line, and submit it in Google Search Console.
The craft of a good sitemap is as much about what you leave out as what you include: add only canonical pages you want indexed that return a 200 status; leave out redirected, blocked or noindex pages. Filling lastmod with the real update date speeds re-crawling of frequently changing pages. A single sitemap holds at most 50,000 URLs or 50 MB; larger sites use multiple sitemaps and a sitemap index that ties them together.
