Discount Math: The Stacked-Discount Trap

A single discount is simple: 30% off a $500 item is 500 × 0.70 = $350. What confuses people is the retailer favourite, the stacked discount: "50% + 20%" is not 70% off. The second discount applies to the price after the first: $100 → $50 at 50% → $40 at 20%; the real total discount is 60%. This tool computes stacked discounts correctly and shows the real total rate separately, so you look at what you pay, not the big number on the tag.

The second mode solves the reverse question: enter the old and new prices to find the real discount rate; it is the fastest way to see whether a "sale" price is really a sale. Everything runs in your browser; no data is sent.

A good discount strategy differs from margin-melting discounts.

In e-commerce a campaign is the balance between protecting margin and lifting sales. Let's design your pricing and campaigns together.
