What is digital marketing?

It is designing the path into your customer's mind. Scroll, and let's step inside together.

Eye · first contact

Everything starts with a glance.

Your customer sees you first. The retina at the back of the eye turns everything on the screen into electrical signals: an ad, a search result, a post.

Optic nerve · signal path

The signal flows to the back of the brain.

The optic nerve carries that signal to the visual center at the back of the brain. Digital marketing designs this journey: the right person, the right moment, the right message.

01Occipital lobe · vision

Being seen. First impressions form in 50 milliseconds.

The occipital lobe decodes what we see. Research shows that a first judgment about a web page's visual appeal forms in about 50 milliseconds. We craft web design, ad visuals and social media creatives to win that first glance.

What we do Web design Ad visuals Social media creatives

02Temporal lobe · language and memory

Being understood. Be the answer they search for.

The temporal lobe gives words meaning and matches them with memory. When your customer asks Google or an AI assistant, this is where they recognize the answer. With SEO, content and your Google Maps listing, we make sure that answer is you.

What we do SEO Content AI search Google Maps

03Limbic system · emotion

Making them feel. Emotion makes a brand memorable.

The limbic system tags what matters emotionally, and what we feel, we remember longer. With social media content that tells your story and gives your brand a face and a voice, we place you in that memory.

What we do Social media management Video and storytelling Community

04Prefrontal cortex · decision

Being trusted. Decisions are shaped by what others say.

The prefrontal cortex weighs options and assesses risk. The brain gives negative information more weight; a single bad review can tip the scale. With press articles, news coverage and genuine customer reviews, we tip the scale in your favor.

What we do Reputation management Press articles Google reviews

05Parietal lobe and motor cortex · action

Moving them to act. The right moment, one tap.

The parietal lobe directs attention, the motor cortex moves the finger, and the reward system responds to the expected gain. With Google and Meta ads we appear at the right moment, turn clicks into customers with a clear offer and an easy form, and measure every result.

Competitors make one move at a time. We manage being seen, understood, felt, trusted and acted upon as one plan, measure it with data and link every move to the next. Checkmate.

What is digital marketing? A short definition

Digital marketing, also called online marketing or internet marketing, is the practice of promoting products and services through the internet and other digital channels, reaching the right people and turning them into customers. Search engines, AI assistants, ads, social media, email and your website are its tools. Unlike traditional marketing, every step can be measured, so the budget can follow results instead of guesses.

What does digital marketing do, and why does it matter?

Digital marketing puts you where customers research, compare and decide. Today a corporate buyer and a local service customer alike usually start with a search; a brand that is missing there never makes the shortlist. Its value comes down to six things:

  • Measurability: You see how many people each channel reached, how many enquiries it brought and what each enquiry cost. The budget is managed by data, not by gut feeling.
  • Precise targeting: Messages are shown by location, interest, search intent and behaviour, only to people likely to care, so the budget is not spread across an uninterested audience.
  • Flexible budget: You can start small, scale the channel that works and stop the one that does not. That flexibility lets small businesses compete on the same field as large brands.
  • Speed: A campaign can go live quickly, and its message, creative and targeting can be changed the same day.
  • Lasting value: SEO, content and reputation build up over time and keep you discoverable even when you pause your ads.
  • Two way conversation: Reviews, messages and forms let you hear customers directly and improve your product or service accordingly.

We cover the topic in more depth in our article on why digital marketing is important.

How does digital marketing work? Five decisions in your customer's mind

Digital marketing works by winning five decisions your customer makes one after another: seeing you, understanding you, feeling something, trusting you and taking action. The journey above shows these decisions in the brain regions involved. Picture a company that sells corporate office furniture.

Being seen: the first impression

The moment a procurement manager sees your ad, search result or website, a first judgment forms. Research shows that a first judgment about a web page's visual appeal forms in about 50 milliseconds. A clear headline, a strong visual and one single offer win that moment.

Being understood: being the answer

Someone searching for corporate office furniture wants the answer on the first page or in an AI answer. SEO makes your brand that answer with a fast foundation, content that matches search intent and trusted links.

Making them feel: being remembered

What we feel, we remember longer. Social media content that shows your craftspeople, your production and the projects you deliver makes your brand the name that comes to mind when the decision is made.

Being trusted: removing doubt

People who find you also search your name. News articles, industry coverage and genuine customer reviews tip the scale in your favor. Reporting policy-violating Google reviews through the official process belongs to this work too.

Moving them to act: turning interest into requests

An ad on the same search appears at the right moment; the click becomes a request through a quote form on a fast page, and the source of every request is tracked, so budget moves to what wins.

Together the effect multiplies. That is why the journey ends on a chessboard: moves made as one plan leave the competitor no room.

What are the types of digital marketing?

The main types of digital marketing are SEO, AI search optimisation (GEO), search engine marketing, social media marketing, social media advertising, content marketing, video marketing, email marketing, local SEO, reputation management, influencer marketing, affiliate marketing, performance marketing, website conversion optimisation and mobile marketing. They are not separate tools but parts of one system that feed each other; which ones lead depends on your goal, the competition and the way your customers make decisions.

SEO (search engine optimisation)

SEO is the work of moving your website up the organic results of search engines such as Google. Technical foundations, content that matches search intent and links from trusted websites work together. You do not pay per click and the effort compounds over time, which makes it the most durable channel when customers research before they buy. We explain the process on our SEO consulting page.

AI search and GEO

People now also ask their questions to assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and read Google's AI Overviews. GEO (generative engine optimisation) increases the chance that your brand is cited as a trusted source in those answers. Clear definitions, verifiable facts, consistent brand data and trusted publications that mention you are what matters here. Our AI SEO (GEO) services cover this area.

Search engine marketing (SEM) and Google Ads

SEM shows your ad to people at the very moment they search for your product or service. Because it catches the point of highest buying intent, it produces enquiries quickly; the budget is controlled daily and you pay only for clicks. It shines for a new product, a campaign period or whenever you need fast results. Details are on our Google Ads management page.

Social media marketing

Social media marketing manages your brand's voice, regular content and community conversations on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Facebook. The goal is not follower count alone but being remembered, trusted and in steady contact with your customers. Our social media management page walks through the process from planning to reporting.

Social media advertising

Meta (Instagram and Facebook), TikTok and LinkedIn ads reach people who are not searching for you yet, based on interests, behaviour and lookalike audiences. They are strong for creating demand, launching a new brand and winning back people who already visited your site. We run this channel through our Meta ads management service.

Content marketing

Content marketing answers your customers' questions with guides, comparisons, case stories and tools. Good content earns visibility in search results and AI answers and builds trust before the sale. The page you are reading is an example of content marketing.

Video marketing

Video marketing tells your story through short videos, product demos, customer stories and tutorials. Video explains how a product is used or how a job is done faster than text, and it carries emotion better than any other format.

Email marketing and CRM

Leads are collected and followed up in a customer relationship management (CRM) system, while newsletters, reminders and personalised emails bring existing customers back to buy again. For businesses with long sales cycles or high repeat purchase value it is one of the most profitable channels.

Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Local SEO makes you visible in searches near your location and on Google Maps. A complete, guideline compliant business profile, up to date photos and genuine customer reviews are often the most efficient starting point for a local business. We handle the setup through our Google Business Profile setup service.

Reputation management and press coverage

Whoever finds you will also search your name. Press articles, industry publications, answered reviews and a strong rating remove doubt. Reporting policy violating Google reviews through the official process is part of this work too.

Influencer marketing

Influencer marketing partners with creators your audience already trusts and tells your story in their voice. With the right person it is more convincing than an ad; success depends less on follower count than on audience fit and measurable goals. See our influencer marketing service and our guide on building an influencer marketing strategy.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing pays partners who promote your product a commission only on completed sales or leads. Because payment depends on results, the risk is low; content creators, comparison sites and coupon sites are typical partners.

Performance marketing and lead generation

Performance marketing ties spend directly to a measurable result such as a sale, an enquiry or a call. Lead generation is the side of it that collects potential customers: ads, landing pages, forms and follow up are designed together. Our lead generation services are built around enquiries that turn into sales.

Website and conversion rate optimisation

Every other channel eventually sends visitors to your website. A fast, trustworthy site with one clear offer turns the same traffic into more enquiries, and conversion rate optimisation improves it through testing. See our web design service and our article on the role of the website in a digital marketing strategy.

Mobile marketing

Mobile marketing reaches customers on their phones through SMS, app notifications, in app ads and mobile first experiences. Since most searches and social media use happen on phones, making every other channel work flawlessly on mobile is part of this discipline as well.

How is digital marketing different from traditional marketing?

The core difference is that every step of digital marketing can be measured, and budget can be redirected as results come in. Print ads and signs still work for some businesses. The two are often used together; here is the comparison:

CriterionTraditional marketingDigital marketing
MeasurabilityReach and sales are mostly estimated.Impressions, clicks, requests and sales are tracked by channel.
TargetingOne message goes to a broad audience.Reach is targeted by location, interest, search intent and behavior.
Budget flexibilityPrint and airtime are committed upfront.Budget can change any day, and weak campaigns are paused.
SpeedPreparation and publishing take a long time.Campaigns go live quickly, while SEO and reputation build over time.
InteractionCommunication runs one way.Comments, messages, forms and calls make it a two-way conversation.

How do you build a digital marketing strategy? 7 steps

A digital marketing strategy connects the goal, the audience, the channels, the message, the budget and the measurement in one plan. It is built in seven steps:

  1. Set the goal and how you will measure it. Replace "more sales" with a measurable target such as monthly quote requests, online sales or bookings. Write down when and with which metric you will review it.
  2. Understand your audience and their search intent. Who is your customer, how do they describe their problem, which words do they search with and who makes the decision? The questions your sales team hears most often are your most valuable data.
  3. Review where you stand and what competitors do. Your site's speed and content, your search visibility, your reviews and the channels where competitors are strong define your starting point.
  4. Choose channels along the customer's path. Pick the best channel for each step: being seen, being understood, being felt, being trusted and moving people to act. Start with the shortest path instead of switching everything on at once.
  5. Prepare the offer and the content. Create pages, ads and content with a clear value proposition, convincing proof and a single call to action.
  6. Set up measurement on day one. With Google Analytics 4, conversion tags and call and form tracking you see which channel every enquiry came from. A campaign launched without measurement can never tell you which spend worked.
  7. Test, report and shift the budget. Compare headlines, creatives, targeting and offers; use regular reports to move budget to the winning channel and stop the losing one.

A strategy is not a document written once and filed away; it is a living plan that is updated as data comes in.

Which channel should each type of business start with?

The right starting channel depends on how customers find you and how long your sales cycle is. Your current situation and your competition set the final order.

  • Local business: Start with visibility in local Google searches and steady care of your Google Business Profile and reviews. Local Google Ads can speed up demand.
  • B2B company: Sales cycles are long and several people decide. A trustworthy website, SEO content, press articles and a CRM that tracks every lead matter most, with Google Ads covering high-intent searches.
  • E-commerce: Product pages, Google Shopping and Meta ads affect sales directly, while remarketing and email win back shoppers who left a full cart.
  • New brand: Nobody searches for your name yet, so build awareness first. Meta ads and social media reach the audience while a solid website and basic SEO are prepared behind them.

How do you set a digital marketing budget?

A digital marketing budget is calculated backwards from the result you want. There is no single figure that fits everyone; industry, competition, region and goal decide it. A sound calculation follows this order:

  • Know what a customer is worth: Work out what an average customer brings in on the first sale and over time. That is the upper limit of what you can spend to win one.
  • Set an acceptable cost: Write down the most you can spend per lead and per customer while staying profitable.
  • Separate paid and compounding channels: Ad spend pays for clicks and works immediately; SEO, content and reputation are an effort budget that builds over time. Plan them separately.
  • Start with a test budget: Give each channel enough budget to collect meaningful data, then scale it or stop it based on results.
  • Do not forget management and production: Besides ad spend, campaign management, content, design and measurement work are part of the budget.

To estimate the advertising side you can use our Google Ads budget calculator and read our guides on setting a Google Ads budget and calculating a social media advertising budget.

How do you measure digital marketing success?

Digital marketing success is measured with indicators tied to your business goal. Choosing the right few numbers matters more than tracking many. A practical starting set looks like this:

  • Visibility: search impressions, average position and brand searches.
  • Traffic quality: where visitors come from, what they do and whether they return.
  • Conversion: quote forms, calls, messages and purchases, plus the conversion rate.
  • Cost: cost per lead, cost per customer and return on ad spend.
  • Reputation: review score, review count and the places that mention your brand.
  • Customer value: repeat purchases and what a customer brings over time.

Our guide to digital marketing KPIs explains each indicator, and how to read a digital marketing report shows how to interpret the data. Our own reports come with commentary that supports decisions.

What are the essential digital marketing tools?

Digital marketing tools are the software used for measurement, advertising, visibility and customer relationships. For most businesses this core set is a good start:

ToolWhat it does
Google Analytics 4Measures where visitors come from, what they do on your site and which conversions they complete.
Google Search ConsoleShows your site's impressions, clicks, positions and technical issues in Google Search.
Google Tag ManagerLets you manage measurement and ad tags in one place without touching the code.

Digital marketing examples

Here is what digital marketing looks like in practice for four different businesses. These are illustrative scenarios that show how channels work together, not real client results.

  • Auto repair shop (local service): A driver searches for a garage nearby. A complete Google Business Profile, answered reviews and service pages make the shop visible on the map and in search; local Google Ads capture urgent requests, and one tap call and WhatsApp buttons collect the enquiry.
  • Fashion brand (ecommerce): Short videos on Instagram and TikTok and Meta ads reach new audiences, while Google Shopping ads catch people searching for the product. Visitors who abandon their cart return through remarketing ads and email; reviews and clear return terms complete the trust.
  • Office furniture manufacturer (B2B): This is the journey the film at the top of this page tells. A trustworthy website wins the first impression, SEO and guides answer the buyer's search, production videos keep the brand in mind, press articles and reviews remove doubt, Google Ads and a quote form collect the enquiry, and a CRM follows every lead until the sale.
  • A newly opened café (new brand): Before opening, the story of the place is told on Instagram and location targeted ads reach people nearby. After opening, the Google Business Profile and the first reviews start its visibility in local search.

What are the most common digital marketing mistakes?

The most common mistakes are spending without tracking, depending on one channel and neglecting the website.

  • Running ads without tracking: Budget is spent without knowing which click became a request.
  • Relying on one channel: A business that depends only on ads disappears the day it turns them off.
  • Neglecting the website: Visitors from ads or search get lost on a slow or confusing page.
  • Content without search intent: Pages that do not answer what people actually ask do not rank.
  • Leaving reputation for later: Unanswered reviews and a brand missing from trusted sources cost you visitors you already won.
  • Splitting responsibility: When ads, site, content and reports sit with different people, nobody owns the whole.

What does a digital marketing specialist do?

A digital marketing specialist plans a brand's growth online, runs the channels and measures results to steer the budget to the right place. The day to day work includes:

  • turning goals into measurable metrics and building the channel plan,
  • setting up, targeting and optimising Google Ads and social media campaigns,
  • preparing technical audits, content plans and link strategies for SEO,
  • setting up measurement, interpreting the data and reporting it,
  • working with design, content and development teams towards the same goal.

The job combines analytical thinking, a feel for words and visuals, command of the ad platforms and constant learning, because platforms and search habits keep changing. For anyone entering the field, the basic courses on Google's own learning platforms and testing with a real budget on a small project are the most solid start.

Frequently asked questions

What is digital marketing used for?

Digital marketing reaches the right people and turns them into customers in a measurable way. It makes you visible in search, builds trust and collects demand through ads. Because every channel can be tracked, you steer budget by data, growing what works and stopping what does not.

Is digital marketing the same as online marketing?

Yes, in everyday use digital marketing, online marketing and internet marketing mean the same thing. Some sources define digital marketing more broadly and include channels that do not need an internet connection, such as SMS or digital screens. In practice all three describe reaching the right people through digital channels and turning them into customers.

What does digital marketing consist of?

Digital marketing consists of SEO, AI search visibility (GEO), Google Ads, Meta ads, social media management, reputation and press articles, email and CRM, and your website. No business uses all of them at once. Start with a few channels that fit your goal, competition and customers, then expand.

What are examples of digital marketing?

An ad shown to someone searching on Google, a business profile at the top of Google Maps, a product video on Instagram, a reminder email to a customer who left their cart, a feature article on a news site and a guide that answers a question are all examples of digital marketing. The film on this page is an interactive example of content marketing.

What is the difference between SEO and ads?

SEO builds lasting visibility in organic results, while ads give instant visibility for as long as you pay. SEO takes effort and time but accumulates; ads work fast and stop when the budget stops. For most businesses the strongest approach runs both, with ad data feeding the SEO strategy.

What is the difference between digital marketing and inbound marketing?

Inbound marketing is an approach that helps customers find you through their own research, attracting them with SEO, content and social media. Digital marketing is the wider field that includes inbound and also methods that reach customers directly, such as advertising. Every inbound activity is digital marketing, but not every digital marketing activity is inbound.

How long does digital marketing take to show results?

Timing varies by channel, industry and starting point, so a fixed date would not be honest. Ads usually produce data and requests sooner, while SEO and reputation build over time. The pace depends on competition, your website's current state, content quality, budget and whether tracking was set up correctly.

Do small businesses need digital marketing?

Yes, if your customers look for you online, small businesses need it too. A large budget is not required, but the right channel is. For local businesses, appearing in local Google searches and managing reviews is often the most efficient start; more channels follow as budget grows.

How is AI changing digital marketing?

AI is changing digital marketing in two ways. Customers increasingly ask their questions to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, so being cited as a source in those answers has become a new kind of visibility. Marketing teams also use AI for ad optimisation, content drafts, data analysis and automation. Setting the strategy, checking accuracy and protecting the brand's voice remain human work.

Should I run digital marketing myself or work with a team?

As your goals grow, working with an experienced team becomes more efficient. Strategy, ad optimization, technical SEO, content and tracking each take specialist skill and work best when managed together. A team protects your time, catches mistakes early and keeps budget from being wasted, so you can focus on running your business.
