Web design for companies in Germany

Web Design in Duisburg

Duisburg trades with the world through its inland port, so many companies here need a site that speaks to German customers and to shippers, partners and candidates abroad. Talha Aslan and team build fast English and German websites with the German legal pages in place, and run the whole project online with a written scope and live progress in our CRM.

In short

Web design in Duisburg often means German for local customers and authorities plus English for international shippers, partners and new hires, with the Impressum, privacy policy and cookie consent built in. The duisport group handled 50.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 by ship, rail and truck. Talha Aslan and team work with Duisburg companies fully online, with a written scope and progress tracked in our CRM.

Duisburg's business profile

What should a website do for a company in Duisburg?

With 502,270 residents at the end of 2024 (Destatis), Duisburg is the fifth largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, set where the Ruhr meets the Rhine. Four strengths of the city shape what a website here has to deliver.

The world's largest inland port

duisport describes itself as the world's largest inland port; in 2024 the group handled 50.8 million tonnes by ship, rail and truck, and container volume rose to 3.9 million TEU. Forwarders, warehouses and customs agents need sites that state routes, capacity and a quick way to request a quote, in English as well as German.

Europe's largest steel site

thyssenkrupp Steel calls Duisburg Europe's largest steel location, with a works site of almost 10 square kilometres in the north of the city. Suppliers, maintenance and engineering firms around it are judged on certificates, reference jobs and careers pages before anyone picks up the phone.

A large university on the doorstep

The University of Duisburg-Essen has more than 40,000 students and one of its two campuses in Duisburg. International students and researchers search in English for housing, services and jobs, and spin offs need a credible site from their first funding application.

Industrial heritage that draws visitors

Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, a former ironworks turned park and event venue, welcomed 1,224,327 visitors in 2024. Restaurants, event venues and accommodation nearby benefit from current opening hours, directions and an English summary for guests from abroad.

How we work

Our team is in Istanbul, your Duisburg project runs online

We have no office, representative or employees in Germany; Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul. With Duisburg companies, kick off, design review and launch happen on video calls in English or German. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Duisburg in summer and two in winter, so our working days overlap almost completely.

Before any design work we write down who the site must win: local customers on either bank of the Rhine, buyers across the Ruhr, or shippers and partners abroad. Languages, who supplies the legal texts and the timeline are part of the written quote. If you happen to visit Istanbul, we can also meet in person.

  • Kick off and design approval on video
  • Written scope, page list and timeline
  • Progress visible in our CRM
  • Calls planned around German hours
  • Training and support after launch

Process

From brief to launch in four steps

  1. Discovery and scope

We define your business, your audience and the site’s one-sentence job: who it sells what to, through which action. Scope and timeline are written from that answer.

  2. Design approval

The home page and key templates come to you as designs first; no code is written before your approval. We do not like surprises, and we do not cause them.

  3. Development

The approved design becomes fast, secure, maintainable code. You follow progress in the CRM and see every page in a staging environment before launch.

  4. Launch and measurement

The site goes live with analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking connected; panel training is given, first-year hosting and maintenance included.

In-depth guide

Web Design Duisburg: Sites for Port, Industry and International Teams

Talha Aslan and teamLast updated: 15 min read

This guide is for companies in Duisburg whose customers, partners or future hires do not all read German: freight forwarders working with overseas shippers, engineering suppliers to the steel industry, university spin offs, international clinics and the expat run businesses that serve them. It walks through the decisions behind web design Duisburg companies face, in the order you will face them, from what the site must achieve to the first three months after launch.

Each section ends in something you can act on: a checklist, a question for any agency, or a concrete page idea. Legal points are general information, not legal advice; have your final texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) before you publish.

What Duisburg's Port and Steel Economy Asks of a Website

In Duisburg a company website is often the first document a buyer abroad checks before replying to an email, so it has to explain your role in a supply chain within seconds. The city counted 502,270 residents at the end of 2024 according to Destatis, and it sits between Essen with 574,682 and Düsseldorf with 618,685. Customers and staff often move between these three cities, so your audience is regional from the start.

Four local strengths set four different jobs for a site:

  • The inland port: duisport handled 50.8 million tonnes by ship, rail and truck in 2024 and 3.9 million TEU of containers; a logistics site must state lanes, modes and lead times before anything else.
  • Steel: thyssenkrupp Steel's works of almost 10 square kilometers in the north of the city sustain a ring of suppliers who are screened online by purchasing teams.
  • The university: the University of Duisburg-Essen has more than 40,000 students, which brings international talent, research partners and young founders.
  • Industrial heritage: Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord drew 1,224,327 visitors in 2024, many of whom look for food, events and directions on their phones.

The first step in any web design Duisburg brief is one sentence describing which of these flows your business depends on. That sentence decides the first screen of your homepage, the order of the menu and the fields in your enquiry form.

Who Searches in Duisburg, and in Which Language

Search behavior in Duisburg splits into local German searches with a district name and international English searches with a service and the city name. A dock worker looking for a dentist types "Zahnarzt Hamborn"; a shipper in Rotterdam or Antwerp types "freight forwarder Duisburg" or "container trucking Duisburg"; a newly arrived researcher types "English speaking doctor Duisburg". Each of them expects a different first screen.

Good web design Duisburg projects start by mapping real audiences against their search language:

  • International shippers and partners: search in English, compare several providers in one sitting and want routes, certifications and a direct contact person.
  • Purchasing teams in the Ruhr: search in German by capability, for example "Stahlbau Duisburg" or "Instandhaltung Industrie Duisburg", and check references before calling.
  • International students and staff: search in English for housing, services, language courses and part time jobs, especially at the start of each semester.
  • Candidates abroad: search for job titles plus the city and judge an employer by its careers page.
  • Visitors: search on their phones around Landschaftspark, the Innenhafen and Ruhrort for opening hours, menus and parking.

For two weeks, log the first words new contacts use, in whatever language they arrive; those phrases become your page titles.

Hiring a Web Team Outside Germany Without Surprises

A remote web partner works when every decision is written down and every stage is visible to you on a live preview link. Our team works from Istanbul, which is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours in winter, so a full shared working day remains. Distance is rarely the problem; unrecorded verbal agreements are.

When you compare offers, ask each team these questions and expect written answers:

  • Scope: Does the proposal list every page, language, form and account that will be handed over?
  • German copy: Who writes the German text, and does a native speaker do the final read?
  • Preview: Can you open the work in progress on your own phone and leave comments directly on it?
  • Live work: Can you open their recent sites today and test speed, forms and language switching yourself?
  • Response times: Which channel do you use for questions, and how quickly are they answered?

To be transparent: all of our reference projects are in Türkiye, and we have not yet completed a project in Germany. You can still open those live sites and judge structure and speed yourself. Reading what our web design service includes before the first call lets you test our proposal against your own list rather than against our sales pitch.

Owning Your Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts

Everything your website runs on should be registered to your company, with your agency added as a user rather than the owner. The central registry for .de domains is DENIC, but you register through a registrar; the holder field must show your legal company name, not the agency's. For international firms with a parent company abroad, decide early whether the German entity or the group holds the domain.

Use this handover checklist on launch day:

  1. Domain: registrar account opened with a company email address, renewal notices going to you.
  2. Hosting: servers in an EU data center, with a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR signed with the provider.
  3. Code and design files: a current copy of the site, the source design files and short setup notes.
  4. Accounts: Google Business Profile, Search Console and the GA4 property owned by your company, with the agency as a manager.
  5. Email: mailboxes plus SPF, DKIM and DMARC records documented so your quotes do not land in spam.

If a line is missing, ask for it before the final invoice is settled. A reliable team prepares this list without being asked and attaches it to the handover document, so changing providers later never depends on goodwill.

Our Online Project Process, Step by Step

A web design Duisburg project with us runs entirely online, through video calls, written documents and a preview environment. The team works from Istanbul and projects in Germany are handled fully remotely; if you ever travel to Istanbul, we can also meet at our office in Ataşehir, though it is never required. The steps are:

  1. Discovery call: we discuss your services, markets, target audiences and the languages you need.
  2. Written scope: page list, languages, forms, who supplies the legal texts and the timeline, in one document you approve.
  3. Content collection: you upload photos, certificates and project descriptions to a shared folder; we list what is still missing.
  4. Design review: the homepage and one service page are reviewed on a shared screen, with every change noted in writing.
  5. Build and testing: the site is tested on phones, tablets and desktops at the preview address; forms are connected to your real inbox.
  6. Launch and training: redirects, Search Console and cookie consent are checked, and a short video session shows your team how to edit content.

Progress for every step is visible in our CRM, so nobody has to chase status by phone. Tell us at the start which hours suit your team; for a port business that may be before the morning shift, for a lab after lectures.

Local Search in Duisburg: Profile, Boroughs, Directories

To appear in map results, your website and Google Business Profile must tell the same story and describe the area you actually serve. The profile name must match your real world name; Google's guidelines do not allow added keywords such as "Logistics Duisburg Port". Service area businesses, for example a mobile technician, may hide their address and define the area instead.

Duisburg has seven boroughs: Walsum and Hamborn in the north, Meiderich and Beeck and the city center in the middle, Homberg, Baerl and Rheinhausen on the west bank of the Rhine, and Süd in the south. Use this geography with care:

  • Real coverage: name only the boroughs you serve regularly, and say plainly whether you cross the Rhine to the west bank.
  • Neighboring towns: if clients also come from Moers, Dinslaken, Oberhausen or Krefeld, describe that in one service area section instead of creating near duplicate town pages, which Google treats as doorway pages.
  • German directories: keep name, address and phone identical on Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and 11880.
  • Reviews: send a short review link after each completed job and reply in the language the review was written in.

Ongoing local and international visibility work runs separately in our SEO service.

English, German or Both: Planning Languages

For most Duisburg companies German remains the base language, with English added where buyers, partners or hires come from abroad. An English only site leaves out local customers, authorities and many purchasing departments; a German only site hides you from shippers and candidates who cannot read it. Turkish can be a third version for businesses whose customers ask in Turkish, since Turkish citizens form the largest group among Duisburg's foreign residents according to Integrationsmonitoring NRW.

Decide per audience, not per ambition:

  • German: the full site, including the Impressum, privacy policy and every service page.
  • English: services, routes or capabilities, references, careers and the enquiry form; written for the international reader, not machine translated.
  • Turkish: only where your team can actually answer in Turkish, so the promise on the page holds in practice.

Each language needs its own URLs, and every version must point to all others and to itself with hreflang annotations. Test your tags with our hreflang generator before launch. Our page on multilingual websites covers structure, translation workflow and common errors in more depth.

Speed, EU Hosting and Security on Phones

Most first visits to a Duisburg business site happen on a phone, often from a truck cab, a warehouse floor or a tram, so speed decides whether the visit becomes an enquiry. Google's Core Web Vitals treat a page as good at the 75th percentile when LCP (how long the largest visible element takes to load) is 2.5 seconds or less, INP (how quickly the page responds to a tap) is 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS (how much the layout shifts while loading) is 0.1 or less.

Practical measures that move these numbers:

  • Local fonts: serve fonts from your own server; a Munich court (LG München I, 20 January 2022) awarded damages for loading Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent.
  • Images: deliver fleet, warehouse and workshop photos in WebP at the size of the screen.
  • Hosting: an EU data center keeps data protection simple and latency low for German visitors.
  • Security: SSL, daily backups, updated plugins and two factor login for the admin area.

Add spam protection to forms with a method that does not set cookies, otherwise your security fix creates a consent problem. You can check how your current site behaves on a phone with our mobile friendly test, then look at the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console once traffic is sufficient.

Duisburg Sector Patterns From Forwarders to Spin Offs

The same city produces very different websites, and the right structure depends on how your buyers decide. These patterns show what that means in practice.

  • Forwarders and customs agents: separate pages for road, rail and inland waterway services, warehousing and customs clearance, plus a quote form that asks for cargo type, origin and destination. The logistics company website page shows the full structure.
  • Industrial suppliers: certificates with numbers visible, a machine list, photographed reference jobs and job ads with shift details; more on the industrial company website page.
  • University spin offs: an English first site with the problem you solve, the research behind it, the team and a demo request, plus a German version for local partners and funding bodies. Investors and partners will judge the team page as closely as the technology.
  • Clinics and professional offices: service pages, the languages your staff speak, opening hours and a factual tone that follows the rules of the profession.
  • Restaurants and venues: menus, events and directions near the Innenhafen or Landschaftspark, with a short English summary for visitors.

Pick the pattern closest to yours and turn it into a draft page list, marking which photos and documents already exist; it is the most useful thing to bring to a web design Duisburg scoping call.

German Legal Basics for an English Language Website

A business website aimed at people in Germany follows German rules even if most of it is written in English. These points are general; have the texts checked by a lawyer.

  • Impressum: § 5 DDG requires name, address, fast contact options and, where applicable, the commercial register entry and VAT ID; regulated professions add their chamber and professional title. Link it from every page, in every language.
  • Privacy policy: forms, maps, analytics or chat tools that process personal data require a GDPR (DSGVO) compliant notice and a processing agreement with each provider.
  • Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, storing or reading information on a device needs consent unless strictly necessary; we recommend making "reject" as visible as "accept".
  • Online shops: the final button must state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need cancellation information.
  • Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz covers many consumer facing shops and services, with an exemption for micro enterprises offering services; check whether it applies to you.

Google also requires consent mode for measurement and personalized advertising features for users in the European Economic Area. We build the banner, forms and page structure; responsibility for the wording of legal texts stays with you and your lawyer.

Moving to a New Site Without Losing Rankings

Every page that earns search traffic today must either keep its URL or be redirected with a 301 to its closest new equivalent. A forwarder that has run the same domain for years may receive more enquiries through old service pages than through the homepage, and losing them can take months to recover.

  1. Inventory: export pages with clicks from the last twelve months in Search Console, plus URLs with external links.
  2. Mapping: build a table that pairs each old URL with its new counterpart; send pages without a match to the relevant category, not the homepage.
  3. Protect staging: password protect the preview site. Blocking it in robots.txt alone is not enough, because Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page it is not allowed to crawl.
  4. Launch day: test redirects one by one on the live site and submit the new XML sitemap.
  5. Monitoring: check 404 errors and pages losing positions weekly for the first four weeks.

Update the website link in your Business Profile and directory listings on the same day. New English pages added during the relaunch should go live with hreflang from the start.

Common Mistakes on Duisburg Company Websites

These mistakes appear again and again on company sites in the city, and each has a straightforward alternative.

  • English bolted on with a plugin: automatic translation of the German site produces awkward copy that buyers notice. Write the key English pages properly and keep the rest German.
  • A capabilities PDF instead of pages: search engines and phone users struggle with a long brochure. Turn each capability into its own short page with photos and certificates.
  • No contact person: an anonymous form makes international buyers hesitate. Show a named contact with languages spoken and a direct phone number.
  • Town pages for the whole Ruhr: near identical pages for Oberhausen, Moers and Krefeld add risk and no value. Describe your real service area once.
  • Tracking before consent: analytics or ad tags firing on page load breach § 25 TDDDG. Load them only after the visitor agrees.
  • Careers hidden in the footer: in a city where industry and logistics compete for staff, a buried jobs page loses candidates. Put careers in the main menu with clear roles and shifts.

Count how many of these apply to your current site. Two or more usually mean a structural rebuild will serve you better than patches. If your customers are concentrated toward the south, the Düsseldorf web design page covers the neighboring market from its own angle.

What Shapes the Budget

Your budget depends on scope, not on the city; a company in Duisburg uses the same packages as our clients in Türkiye. The main factors are:

  • Number of languages: each language means separately written copy, its own titles and reciprocal hreflang tags.
  • Pages and services: an engineering firm with eight capabilities needs a longer page list than a single service business.
  • Forms and integrations: quote forms with file upload, job applications, booking tools or a CRM connection add development time.
  • Content preparation: whether you or we write texts, describe reference jobs and organize photography.
  • Online shop: number of products, payment methods and the German checkout requirements.

The most reliable way to control cost is a focused first release. A customs agent could launch with five German and five English pages and add a Turkish version later. Name late wishes such as a document portal in the first call, even for phase two.

When comparing offers, look past the total and check support after launch, who owns the hosting, legal page setup and training line by line. Package contents are listed in our pricing section; multilingual and custom builds receive a written quote.

Your First 90 Days and the Next Step

The first three months after launch show whether the site actually brings in work, so plan them as deliberately as the build. A simple schedule keeps the focus on evidence:

  1. Days 1 to 30: confirm indexing in Search Console, complete the Business Profile and ask recent satisfied clients for reviews.
  2. Days 31 to 60: compare which forms and which language versions bring enquiries, using consent based measurement, and strengthen pages that attract no visits.
  3. Days 61 to 90: add content for your two most requested services, and switch on the careers section or an extra language if the data supports it.

Before deciding, settle three points: which language your buyers search in, whether your first screen states what you do, and whether you can measure enquiries today. If one is unclear, a new site or a structured relaunch makes sense; if all three hold, targeted additions such as English service pages may be enough, and we will tell you so.

To plan your web design Duisburg project, request a short video call through our contact form. You will receive a written scope with page list, languages and timeline, so you can compare it against any other offer on equal terms.
