Age Calculator
Enter your date of birth and see your exact age in years, months and days instantly. Plus total months, weeks, days and hours, time to your next birthday, the day you were born and your zodiac sign. Target age mode shows the exact date you turn 18, 21 or 65. Free, no sign-up.
If a form says "age as of" a date, enter that date as the calculation date. For February 29 birthdays, the tool uses March 1 in common years.

How to use the Age Calculator
- Enter your date of birth
Pick it from the calendar or type it in. The result updates as you type, so there is no button to press.
- Choose the calculation date
It starts on today, so you only change it when a form names another date. For an age limit on a form, use the Jan 1 or Dec 31 shortcut or type any date you need.
- Read your age in the unit you want
Use Show age in to switch between years, months and weeks. The cards also show the days to your next birthday, the weekday you were born and your zodiac sign.
- Switch to Target age
Open the Target age tab and pick 18, 21, 65 or type your own number in Other. You get the date you reach that age and the time left.
How the age calculator works it out
The tool counts the gap between two dates on the calendar instead of dividing by an average year length. As a result, leap years and months of 28 to 31 days feed straight into the answer.
Calculation year minus birth year. Then subtract 1 if this year's birthday has not come yet.Whole months since the last birthday, then the leftover days. When days go negative, the tool borrows the length of the previous month.Calculation date minus date of birth, in calendar days. Your birth date counts as day zero.Full years × 12 + remaining months.Weeks: total days ÷ 7, whole part only. Hours: total days × 24.Birth year + target age, with the same day and month as your birthday. For February 29 birthdays, the anniversary falls on March 1 in common years. Some institutions use February 28 instead, so check their rule for anything official.
Worked age examples
These are example dates, so you can enter any row into the tool and check that you get exactly the same result.
| Date of birth | Calculation date | Age (years, months, days) | Total months | Total days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 15, 1990 | Sep 25, 2026 | 36 years 4 months 10 days | 436 | 13,282 |
| Feb 29, 2000 | Feb 28, 2027 | 26 years 11 months 30 days | 323 | 9,861 |
| Feb 29, 2000 | Mar 1, 2027 | 27 years 0 months 0 days | 324 | 9,862 |
| Jan 31, 2000 | Mar 1, 2001 | 1 year 0 months 29 days | 12 | 395 |
| Aug 20, 2008 | Aug 19, 2026 | 17 years 11 months 30 days | 215 | 6,573 |
Rows two and three show the February 29 rule, row four a month end birthday, and the last row the day before an 18th birthday.
Rules that decide your age on paper
A few rules I check whenever an age limit matters, and how to apply them in the tool:
| Situation | Rule | What to do in the tool | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turning a new age (England and Wales) | You attain an age at the start of the anniversary of your birth date | Set the calculation date to the birthday itself | Family Law Reform Act 1969, s. 9 |
| Leap years | Years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400 | Nothing; the tool applies the rule for you | U.S. Naval Observatory |
| Average calendar year | 365.2425 days in the Gregorian calendar | Use calendar dates, not total days ÷ 365 | U.S. Naval Observatory |
| February 29 birthdays | Common years have no February 29 | The tool uses March 1; ask the institution which day it uses | Gregorian calendar |
Laws differ by country and change over time; check the current official text before a critical application.
What does this age calculator show you?
An age calculator finds the exact gap between your date of birth and another date, expressed in years, months and days. It sounds trivial. However, months run from 28 to 31 days and February 29 appears only in leap years, so a quick mental calculation often drifts by a day or two.
This tool counts the gap on the calendar and shows everything on one screen:
- Exact age: years, months and days, or only months or weeks if you prefer.
- Totals: the months, weeks, days and hours you have lived.
- Birthday info: days until your next birthday and the weekday it falls on.
- Birth weekday and sign: the day of the week you were born and your Western zodiac sign.
- Target age: the date you turn 18, 21, 65 or any age you type.
Everything runs in your browser, so your birth date never reaches a server. If you need the gap between two dates for something other than age, such as a deadline or a notice period, the date calculator is the better fit.
Why doesn't subtracting birth years give your exact age?
The mistake I see most often is subtracting the birth year from the current year and stopping there. For example, someone born on May 15, 1990 gets 2026 minus 1990, which is 36. On March 1, 2026, though, that person is still 35, because this year's birthday has not arrived yet.
The correct method has three steps:
- Take the difference in years and subtract one if the birthday is still ahead this year.
- Count the whole months since the last birthday.
- Add the leftover days; if the days go negative, borrow the length of the previous month.
The tool does these steps for you. It also never rounds: 36 years 4 months 10 days is not the same as 36.4 years. For any official age limit, the question is whether you have completed the full year, and a decimal figure cannot answer that.
Dividing total days by 365 fails for the same reason. It ignores the extra day that arrives every four years. As a result, it can show you a year older or younger in the days around your birthday.
How does the age calculator handle February 29 birthdays?
The leap year rule is short. Years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years that are not divisible by 400. According to the U.S. Naval Observatory, 1900 was therefore not a leap year while 2000 was. Thanks to this rule, the average Gregorian year lasts 365.2425 days.
For anyone born on February 29, the problem is that the date is missing in three years out of four. In those years the tool treats March 1 as the anniversary. So a person born on February 29, 2000 shows as 26 years 11 months 30 days on February 28, 2027, and as exactly 27 on March 1, 2027.
That choice is a convention, not a universal law. Some institutions and countries use February 28 instead. Therefore, for exams, insurance or pensions, ask the institution which day it counts. To compare both answers, simply set the calculation date to February 28 first and then to March 1.
When do you legally turn a new age?
In England and Wales the answer sits in section 9 of the Family Law Reform Act 1969: a person attains a particular age at the commencement of the relevant anniversary of their date of birth. In plain words, you are 18 from the very start of your 18th birthday, not from the time of day you were born.
The tool also follows the same logic. If you set the calculation date to the birthday itself, the new age appears with 0 months and 0 days. One day earlier it shows 11 months and 30 days or similar, depending on the month.
Other countries and US states write their own rules, and many forms add a cut off date on top, such as "age as of September 1". In practice, the date in that phrase is what you should enter as the calculation date. Then the full years figure tells you directly whether you meet the limit. For anything with legal weight, check the current rule of the country or institution involved.
How do you work out a child's age in months or weeks?
Babies and young children are a different case, because people rarely describe their age in years. Parents usually say a baby is 8 months or 14 weeks old, and many childcare and school forms ask for the age in months on a specific date.
Here is how to get that figure:
- Enter the child's date of birth.
- Set the calculation date to the day the form or cut off refers to.
- Under Show age in, choose Months, or Weeks for a newborn.
For example, a child born on December 15, 2020 is 69 months and 15 days old on September 30, 2026. The Weeks view works the same way and shows full weeks plus the leftover days, which is also how pregnancy and early infancy are usually counted. Because school entry rules vary by country and region and change over time, check the current rule of your school or local authority before you rely on the number.
Why do age calculators sometimes disagree by a day or two?
Nearly every difference between age calculators comes from birthdays at the end of a month. Someone born on January 31 has no "monthly anniversary" in February, and each calculator fills that gap its own way:
- This tool: rolls the missing day into the next month. From January 31, 2000 to March 1, 2001 it shows 1 year 0 months 29 days.
- Another method: borrows the length of the birth month and reports 1 year 1 month 1 day for the same range.
- Decimal years: divides total days by 365 or 365.25, which drifts because of leap years.
The first two methods agree on the total number of days; they only split months and days differently. Date formats also add another trap: 05/06 means May 6 in the US but June 5 in the UK. That is why I always print the result dates with the month name. If you want to turn the total days into minutes or seconds, the unit converter does that in a second.
What should you consider when your website asks for a date of birth?
Age questions are not only a personal curiosity; they show up in plenty of web forms. Quote forms that price by age, promotions limited to adults and booking forms are typical examples. When we build forms for clients, we follow these rules:
- Ask only if you need it. The GDPR requires personal data to be adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary. If you only need to confirm an age limit, a simple age confirmation may be enough. My guide to building a GDPR compliant website covers the details.
- Never store age as a fixed number. Age changes every day. Instead, keep the birth date if you truly need it and calculate the age at the moment you use it.
- Make the field mobile friendly. A native date picker or three short fields for day, month and year beat scrolling through a hundred years in a dropdown. I go deeper in my article on lead form design.
- Label the field and the format clearly. Screen reader users need a visible label and an example format; my guide to web accessibility explains why.
