Giveaway Winner Picker

Run a fair giveaway draw: paste a name list or enter a number range, choose how many winners and backups you need, and let your browser's cryptographic random generator decide. For Instagram comment giveaways, office and classroom raffles, ticket draws. Free, no sign-up.

The list stays in your browser; never uploaded or added to links.
Ignores letter case and a leading @. When off, each line counts as an extra entry; the same person still wins only once.

How to use the Giveaway Winner Picker

  1. Pick a mode

Name list mode suits Instagram comments, office and classroom draws. Number range mode handles raffle tickets, coupons and queue numbers.

  2. Paste the list

Put one name or username on each line. The counter above the box shows how many people the list holds and how many duplicates it removed.

  3. Set winners and backups

Their total cannot exceed the number of participants, and one draw picks at most 1,000 people. The result panel shows the chance per person straight away.

  4. Decide the duplicate rule

With the box ticked, everyone gets one entry. Untick it and each line counts as an extra entry, although the same person can still win only once.

  5. Draw and record

Press Start the draw to see winners, backups, the draw number and a time stamp. Copy result puts the list on your clipboard for the announcement.

Winning odds and the selection algorithm

The tool does two jobs at once. It shows the odds in the result panel, and it also picks winners with equal probability. The rows below explain both in plain words.

Chance to win per personChance (%) = winners ÷ participants × 100
Chance incl. backupsChance (%) = (winners + backups) ÷ participants × 100
Chance to be the first winner with multiple entriesChance (%) = the person's lines ÷ all lines × 100
Unbiased random index (rejection sampling)u = 32 bit cryptographic number; if u ≥ floor(2^32 ÷ n) × n, discard u and draw again, otherwise index = u mod n
Shuffle (Fisher-Yates)from the end to the start, pick a random j in 0..i and swap i with j; the first k people win, the next b people become backups

When the duplicate box is off and someone appears on several lines, the odds differ from person to person. In that case the panel shows "depends on entries" instead of a percentage. The tool also rounds percentages to two decimals and values below 0.1% to four decimals.

Example giveaway scenarios

These rows are sample calculations; enter the same values in the tool and the result panel shows exactly the same odds.

What is a giveaway picker and how does this one choose winners?

A giveaway picker selects winners and backups from a list of names or a range of numbers. Nobody can predict its result in advance. This giveaway picker runs entirely in your browser. You paste the list and set the number of winners and backups. Then your browser's cryptographic random number generator makes the choice. The list never leaves your device, nothing stores it, and it never goes into the share link.

Arguments after a giveaway tend to be about how the draw worked rather than who won. That is why I built the tool around four rules.

  • Two modes: a name list (Instagram comments, office, classroom) and a number range (raffle tickets, coupons, queue numbers).
  • One prize per person: however many lines someone appears on, they show up in the result only once.
  • Duplicate check: it ignores letter case and a leading @, and the counter shows how many duplicates it removed.
  • Audit trail: every result shows a draw number, the participant count and a time stamp down to the second.

The result panel also shows the chance to win per person. So you can answer "what were my odds?" in the announcement. To test other scenarios, the percentage calculator helps too.

Do you need a licence or permit to run a giveaway?

It depends on where your entrants live. In most places the answer turns on three ingredients: a prize, chance and payment. Section 14 of the Gambling Act 2005 sets the test for Great Britain. A simple lottery there means people pay to take part and chance alone allocates the prizes. Therefore, according to the Gambling Commission, a free draw with a genuinely free entry route needs no licence.

A few practical consequences follow.

  • Paid entries change everything. If people must buy something to enter, offer an equally convenient free route instead. Alternatively, turn the draw into a competition that needs real skill.
  • The United States works state by state. Sweepstakes rules vary, but the common test combines prize, chance and consideration. That is why US promotions say "no purchase necessary".
  • Turkey requires a permit for promotional draws with non cash prizes. You apply to Milli Piyango İdaresi at least 15 days before the campaign starts.

Rules change and details matter. So before a high value or paid entry promotion, check the law in each target country and ask a lawyer.

How should UK promoters run the draw itself?

If your promotion targets UK consumers, the CAP Code that the ASA enforces also applies. Rule 8.24 asks promoters to award prizes in accordance with the laws of chance. Unless a computer process produces verifiably random results, an independent person must pick the winners or supervise the draw.

This tool draws with genuine randomness, yet "verifiable" means you can show it to others. So I recommend three habits.

  1. Ask a colleague with no stake in the result to watch the draw, and note their name.
  2. Reload the page, start a screen recording and draw once. The result then shows draw number 1 with a time stamp.
  3. Keep the recording, the entry list and the closing time together until any complaint window has passed.

The code also expects you to state significant conditions up front. These include how to enter, the closing date, the number and nature of prizes and any entry limits. After the draw, tell winners how and when you will contact them. Finally, award prizes as described, normally within 30 days.

When is a giveaway picker alone enough?

A browser tool is all you need for many everyday draws, because nobody pays and little is at stake. Typical examples follow.

  • Classroom and team decisions: who presents first, who takes the next shift, which idea goes to a vote.
  • Community events: a raffle among club members attending a meeting, with free tickets.
  • Small social media giveaways: free entry by comment, with clear terms published in advance.
  • Ticket draws: numbered tickets handed out for free at an event; the number range mode covers these.

The picture changes once money or valuable prizes come into play. Specifically, paid tickets, expensive prizes and campaigns in several countries each add legal duties. In those cases I would pair the tool with an independent observer and a legal review. If your audience is in Turkey, remember that promotional draws there need a permit even when entry is free.

How do entry rules change the list?

A fair giveaway starts with rules you publish before the draw. In other words, the same list turns into a different distribution of chances under different rules. Your announcement should at least answer these questions.

  • How many entries per person? If each comment counts, untick "Remove duplicate names"; even then the tool picks a person only once.
  • Who cannot enter? Remove your brand account, employees and rule breaking comments before you draw. If your terms exclude minors, remove them too.
  • When does entry close? Give a time and keep a screenshot of the list at that moment.

Instagram's Promotion Guidelines also add two requirements. First, each entrant gives Instagram a complete release. Second, you acknowledge that Instagram does not sponsor, endorse or administer the promotion. Also, do not encourage people to tag themselves in photos they do not appear in. To choose a campaign hashtag that stands apart from competitors, try the hashtag generator.

Why should a random draw not rely on Math.random?

Math.random in the browser is fast, but nobody designed it for tasks that must resist prediction. For those, MDN points to the Web Crypto API instead. That is why the tool generates every number with crypto.getRandomValues.

The second trap is modulo bias. Imagine taking a random byte between 0 and 255 and using its remainder after dividing by 100. 256 does not divide evenly by 100. As a result, outcomes 0 to 55 come from three different bytes, but outcomes 56 to 99 come from only two. In other words, people near the top of the list get a 50% higher chance.

The tool closes this gap with rejection sampling.

  1. It draws a 32 bit cryptographic number.
  2. Next, it checks the number against the largest multiple of the participant count that fits in 32 bits. If the number lies above that limit, the tool discards it and draws again.
  3. Finally, it takes the remainder as a position; a Fisher-Yates shuffle repeats this step for every position in the list.

As a result, every person has a mathematically equal chance. Two draws with the same list also stay independent of each other.

What should you do after announcing the winner?

A giveaway does not end when the result appears on screen. Contact and announcement decide how much people trust you.

  • Announcement: post winners and backups in order in the same update. The Copy result button puts the list on your clipboard.
  • Contact: message winners only from your official account. Scammers often create lookalike accounts under giveaway posts, so state that you will never ask for card details or fees. A WhatsApp link makes it easy for winners to reach you.
  • Backup rule: say in advance how long a winner has to reply. Then move to the next backup when that time runs out.
  • Personal data: if you collect addresses or phone numbers, explain why and for how long. Also delete the data once you no longer need it. I cover this in my guide to building a GDPR compliant website.

If complaints arrive, share your records before you defend yourself. The steps in my social media crisis guide apply here as well.

Does a giveaway bring followers who stay?

It lifts reach in the short term; whether followers stay depends on how relevant the prize is to your audience. A generic prize everyone wants attracts prize hunters with no interest in your brand. Once the campaign ends, that comes back as unfollows and weak engagement. A prize tied to your brand, on the other hand, leaves a smaller but more relevant audience.

I look at three signals to judge the effect.

  • How many of the new followers are still there 30 days after the campaign.
  • The engagement rate on posts after the campaign, which you can compare with the Instagram engagement rate calculator.
  • Visits and sales from links in the giveaway post; add UTM parameters to those links.

Treat a giveaway as one part of a well planned collaboration rather than a growth strategy on its own. For creator matching and a measurement plan, see our influencer marketing service. I also weigh organic against paid growth in this article.

Common giveaway mistakes

  • MistakePaid entry without a free routeDo this insteadIn Great Britain this can mean an unlicensed lottery. So offer an equally convenient free route or use a real skill question.
  • MistakeRedrawing when you dislike the resultDo this insteadAnnounce in advance that the first draw counts. Start recording right after loading the page so the result shows draw number 1.
  • MistakeDrawing from an uncleaned listDo this insteadRemove your own account, employees and rule breaking comments first. Then set the duplicate box to match your rules.
  • MistakeSkipping backupsDo this insteadPick as many backups as winners and publish the reply deadline. When it expires, move to the next backup.
  • MistakeKeeping entrant data foreverDo this insteadCollect only what you need and tell entrants why. Delete addresses or phone numbers when the giveaway is over.
