WhatsApp Link Generator
Create a clickable wa.me WhatsApp link from your phone number in seconds: add a pre-filled message, test the link instantly, copy the HTML for an inline button or a floating corner button, and turn the link into a QR code in one click. Free, no sign-up.
Type the number the way you know it: 07700 900123, 7700 900123 or +44 7700 900123. The tool drops the leading 0 and never adds the country code twice.

How to use the WhatsApp Link Generator
- Pick the link type
A chat link takes visitors straight to your number. A share link has no number; the visitor picks which chat receives the message.
- Type the number your usual way
Choose the country code, then enter 07700 900123 or +44 7700 900123. The tool drops the leading 0 and never adds the country code twice.
- Add a pre-filled message
Write your own text or edit one of the four templates. The tool encodes spaces, emoji and line breaks for you.
- Test, then copy
Press Test to confirm the chat opens on the right number. Then copy the WhatsApp link, or press Make QR code for a print-ready code.
- Put the button on your site
Choose an inline button or a corner button. Then paste the code into the HTML of your page.
What is a WhatsApp link made of?
The tool turns your input into WhatsApp's official short link format. Your number shrinks to digits only, while the message goes through URL encoding. The box on the right shows the exact result.
https://wa.me/ + country code + number (digits only) + ?text= + encoded messagehttps://wa.me/?text= + encoded message + space + page addressthe tool strips spaces, brackets, dashes and the + sign, drops the leading 0 and skips the country code if the number already contains itspace becomes %20, line break %0A, question mark %3F, ampersand %26 and # becomes %23 (encodeURIComponent)UK: 9 or 10 digits without the country code; US and Canada: 10; at most 15 digits in total (ITU-T E.164)adds utm_source=whatsapp and utm_medium=social to the shared address; if the address already has parameters, the tool continues with &A few characters, such as the apostrophe and brackets, pass through encodeURIComponent unchanged. They stay in the link and do not break it.

The UK number sits in the 07700 900000 to 900999 block. Ofcom reserves that block for TV, radio and examples, so it never reaches a real subscriber. The other numbers are placeholders.

| Turkey | +90 | 0555 000 00 00 | 905550000000 |
Country codes follow the ITU-T E.164 list. US and Canadian numbers have no leading 0 at home; the 1 in front is the country code. Use the Other field for countries not listed.
What is a WhatsApp link generator and what does it do?
A WhatsApp link generator turns your phone number into a wa.me link that opens a chat with one tap. You can add a pre-filled message too. WhatsApp calls the feature click to chat: whoever taps the link can message you without saving your number first. The only requirement is an active WhatsApp account behind the number.
This tool handles four jobs at once:
- Converts the number to international format and drops the leading 0.
- URL-encodes the message, so accents, symbols and emoji survive the trip.
- Writes the HTML for an inline button or a button fixed in the corner.
- Sends the finished link to the QR code generator in one click.
On client projects, my team and I place the WhatsApp button next to the contact form, not instead of it. In our web design work the pattern is consistent. Mobile visitors often prefer a quick message. Office buyers on a desktop, however, may still reach for the form. Keeping both doors open is the safer choice.
Chat link or share link: which one do you need?
The two modes do different jobs. A chat link contains your number and takes the visitor straight into a conversation with you, for example wa.me/447700900123. A share link has no number and starts with wa.me/?text= instead. Whoever taps it chooses which chat receives the message.
- Use a chat link for quotes, bookings, orders and support.
- Use a share link when visitors should pass a post, an offer or a product on to friends.
- In share mode, the page address has its own field. The tool appends it to the message and adds https:// when needed.
Share mode also has a UTM box. Tick it, and the tool adds utm_source=whatsapp and utm_medium=social to the address. As a result, GA4 lists visits from those shares as their own source. If you also need a campaign name, build the address in the UTM builder first and paste it here.
How do you write the number: leading 0, plus sign and country code?
WhatsApp links only accept the international format: country code first, then the number, digits only. In the UK you dial a leading 0 at home. That 0 is a domestic trunk prefix, so it has no place in the international version. For example, 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123.
- Type 07700 900123 and the tool removes the 0 on its own.
- Paste +44 7700 900123 or 0044 7700 900123 and the tool recognises 44 instead of adding it twice.
- US and Canadian numbers have no leading 0. The 1 in front is the country code, so the tool also reads a typed 1 201 555 0123 correctly.
If the digit count looks wrong for the selected country, the tool warns you. In addition, the ITU-T E.164 standard caps a full international number at 15 digits, and the tool flags anything longer. For a country outside the list, pick Other and type the code yourself. Start the number with + and the tool takes the country code from the number itself.
What makes a good pre-filled message?
The pre-filled message is the text waiting in the input box when the chat opens. The visitor can edit it or send it with one tap. An empty chat screen stops many people, because writing the first sentence takes effort. A good pre-filled message removes that hurdle.
- Keep it short: a greeting and one request are enough.
- Name the page, for example I am writing from your pricing page. Then you know the source in the first second.
- Write in the visitor's voice: not Contact us, but I would like some information.
- Leave out fields for personal data such as account numbers, addresses or passwords.
The Info, Price, Booking and Order templates give you a starting point. Adapting the wording is still your job. That said, the principles from my UX writing guide apply to buttons and messages too. Feel free to use emoji, line breaks and accented letters; the tool encodes all of them.
How do you add a WhatsApp button to your website?
The tool gives you two ready-made button codes. Button is a green pill inside your content. It suits a contact page, a product description or the end of a service page. Corner button is a round icon that stays fixed in the bottom right corner while the visitor scrolls.
- Pick the style and press Copy code.
- In WordPress, paste it into a Custom HTML block; on other sites, paste it into the page HTML. For the corner button on every page, use your shared footer template.
- Then open the page on a phone. Check that the button clears the cookie banner, any chat bubble and the back to top button.
There is one more advantage: the code loads no external script, it is just a link. Unlike most plugin-based chat widgets, it downloads no extra JavaScript and adds no weight to the page. I explain why that matters in my article on site speed and SEO. For placement and wording, my CTA button examples also make a useful checklist.
How do you track clicks on your WhatsApp button?
A wa.me link sends the visitor to another domain, so UTM tags do not help here. UTM describes how someone arrives on your site, not how they leave it. To measure the click, look at the analytics on your own site instead.
- With GA4 enhanced measurement switched on, GA4 records every click to another domain as a click event. Filter for link_domain wa.me and you have your WhatsApp clicks.
- Mark those clicks as a key event. Then you can see which pages and channels start conversations.
- If you run Google Ads, import the same event into the ad account and add it to your conversion actions.
Keep in mind that a click is not a message; the visitor can open WhatsApp and change their mind. That is why a short source phrase in the message helps: it ties an incoming chat to a page. In the accounts my team and I run through Google Ads management, a WhatsApp click has a lower value than a form submission. The reason is simple: not every click turns into a real conversation.
How do you use a WhatsApp link generator with QR codes and short links?
For print, you need a QR code rather than a typed link. The Make QR code button opens your finished link in the QR code tool. There you download a PNG or SVG for business cards, shop windows, menus or packaging.
However, the link you create here is static: the number and message live inside it. If your number changes, printed codes keep pointing to the old one. There are two ways around that.
- Redirect an address on your own domain, such as example.com/whatsapp, to the wa.me link and print that address as the QR code. When the number changes, you only update the redirect; the redirect checker confirms it still works.
- WhatsApp Business Platform short links hide the number behind a random code. They also let you edit the pre-filled message later. According to Meta's documentation, those messages can hold up to 140 characters.
Whichever route you take, test a real-size print first. Scan it with at least two different phones before the full print run.
Common mistakes when creating WhatsApp links
- ✕MistakeKeeping the leading 0 (wa.me/07700900123)✓Do this insteadDrop the 0 and add the country code: wa.me/447700900123. The tool does this for you.
- ✕MistakeAdding the country code twice (wa.me/44447700900123)✓Do this insteadA pasted +44 number already has the code. The tool spots it and skips it.
- ✕MistakeLeaving +, spaces, brackets or dashes in the link✓Do this insteadwa.me wants digits only. Paste the formatted number into the tool and take the clean digits.
- ✕MistakeTyping an unencoded message into the link✓Do this insteadUnencoded & and # characters cut the message short. Copy the link from the tool instead.
- ✕MistakePublishing without a test✓Do this insteadPress Test on a phone and a desktop. Without an active WhatsApp account behind the number, the chat cannot start.
