Web design for companies in the western Ruhr

Web Design in Mülheim

Mülheim an der Ruhr is home to a turbine plant, a retail group headquarters and two Max Planck institutes, so many local firms sell to engineers, buyers and researchers who read English as readily as German. Talha Aslan and team build fast websites for both audiences, with German legal pages in place, and run the project online with a written scope and live CRM progress.

In short

Web design in Mülheim usually needs German for local customers and authorities, and English for engineering buyers, researchers and international staff. Mülheim generated 96,001 euros of GDP per person in work in 2023, the highest of the 15 cities and districts in the Ruhr area according to IT.NRW. Talha Aslan and team work with Mülheim companies fully online, with a written scope and every step tracked in our CRM.

Mülheim's business profile

What should a website do for a company in Mülheim?

Mülheim an der Ruhr had 173,050 residents at the end of 2024 (Destatis), and IT.NRW puts its 2023 GDP at about 7.9 billion euros. It is a mid sized city with an unusually productive economy, and four strengths shape what a website here has to deliver.

GDP per person in work, 2023 (euros)IT.NRW, GDP of the independent cities 2023
  • Mülheim96,001
  • Essen90,508
  • Oberhausen77,578

The Ruhr's most productive workforce

IT.NRW reports 96,001 euros of GDP per person in work in Mülheim in 2023, against 82,412 for the Ruhr area and 86,610 for North Rhine Westphalia. Buyers in a high output economy compare suppliers quickly, so a clear offer, real project photos and a short route to contact matter.

Headquarters of a retail group

ALDI SÜD's central service company lists Burgstraße 37 in Mülheim an der Ruhr in its legal notice. Packaging, IT or consulting firms that want to supply a retailer of that size need a site that shows references, certificates and the right contact person within seconds.

Turbines and generators

According to Siemens, more than 4,600 people at the Siemens Energy site in Mülheim build turbines and generators and work in assembly, service and sales. Engineering, maintenance and parts suppliers need technical capability pages in English and German, plus an enquiry form that reaches the right engineer.

Nobel prize research and a university of applied sciences

The Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, founded in 1912, has produced two chemistry Nobel laureates: Karl Ziegler in 1963 and Benjamin List in 2021. The city also hosts the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and the Hochschule Ruhr West, so international researchers and students look for English pages when choosing services.

How we work

Our team is in Istanbul; your Mülheim project runs on video

Talha Aslan and team are based in Istanbul; we have no branch, agent or employee in Germany. With Mülheim companies, the first conversation, every design review and the launch happen on video calls with screen sharing, in English or German. Istanbul runs one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two in winter, which leaves most of your working day free for calls.

Before we draw a single page, we write down who the site must convince: a plant engineer comparing suppliers, a buyer from a retail group, a visiting researcher or a neighbour looking for a trade. Languages, who supplies the legal texts and the launch date are part of that written scope. If you ever pass through Istanbul, you are welcome to visit us, but no stage of the project depends on it.

  • Kickoff and design reviews with screen sharing
  • Pages, languages and dates in writing
  • Status of every task in our CRM
  • Calls set around German working hours

Process

From brief to launch in four steps

  1. Discovery and scope

We define your business, your audience and the site’s one-sentence job: who it sells what to, through which action. Scope and timeline are written from that answer.

  2. Design approval

The home page and key templates come to you as designs first; no code is written before your approval. We do not like surprises, and we do not cause them.

  3. Development

The approved design becomes fast, secure, maintainable code. You follow progress in the CRM and see every page in a staging environment before launch.

  4. Launch and measurement

The site goes live with analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking connected; panel training is given, first-year hosting and maintenance included.

Web design Mülheim: sites for engineers, researchers and the Ruhr

Talha Aslan and teamLast updated: 16 min read

This guide is for international companies with a Mülheim an der Ruhr entity, for founders and freelancers who moved to the city, and for local firms that sell to English speaking buyers. Good web design Mülheim projects are settled before the first mockup: which audience comes first, which language leads, which German legal pages apply and who owns every account afterwards.

We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered the questions the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something to check on your current site, a decision to make, or a question to put to any agency you are talking to.

What a website has to do in Mülheim's economy

A Mülheim website speaks to a small but unusually productive business community, so it has to make the offer, the audience and the next step clear on the first screen. According to IT.NRW, GDP per person employed in Mülheim was 96,001 euros in 2023, the highest of the 15 cities and districts in the Ruhr region; neighboring Essen reached 90,508 and Oberhausen 77,578.

Destatis counted 173,050 residents at the end of 2024, yet the city hosts a turbine and generator plant, the service company of a major retail group and two Max Planck institutes. Your reader may be a homeowner in Saarn, a procurement engineer, or a postdoc who arrived last month.

Before any web design Mülheim brief goes out, write down which job the site does first. In Mülheim it is usually one or two of these:

  • Local enquiries: calls, bookings and directions from people living or working in the Stadtteile around you.
  • Corporate buyers: capabilities, certificates and a named contact that a purchasing team can review without phoning you.
  • Hiring: a careers page that works in German and English and takes an application in a few minutes.
  • International clients: English content for researchers, relocating staff and partners abroad who do not read German comfortably.

The order you choose drives the menu, the homepage and what you measure. The first job gets the first screen on a phone; the second gets a visible path in the menu and at the end of each page.

Who searches for what in Mülheim

Search behavior in Mülheim splits into four intents, and each one needs its own page type. Because the city stretches along both banks of the Ruhr, locals often type a Stadtteil rather than the city, while an engineer looking for a supplier may leave the place out entirely.

  • District and proximity: "Zahnarzt Heißen", "Physiotherapie Broich" or "Schlüsseldienst in der Nähe". Map results usually lead here, so the page needs an address, opening hours and a phone number people can tap.
  • Technical sourcing: queries such as "Generatorinstandhaltung" or "Schweißfachbetrieb Ruhrgebiet" reward detailed capability pages, equipment lists and downloadable documents.
  • Campus and institutes: students at Hochschule Ruhr West and staff at the Max Planck institutes search in English for rooms, language courses, doctors and cafés.
  • Relocation: people moving for a job search for tax advisers, lawyers, movers and childcare who explain things in English.

A simple test shows where you stand. Type your five most important search terms on a phone, once with a Stadtteil, once with the city name and once in English, and note what appears first: the map, ads, directories or company sites.

That table shows which page types competitors already cover and where an English answer is still missing.

Hiring a team outside Germany without the usual risks

A partner without an office in the city works well when the process is written down, visible and easy to reach; distance itself is rarely the problem. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul and run projects in Germany fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours in winter, so working hours overlap for most of the day.

Whoever you shortlist, ask the same questions and get the answers in writing:

  • Meetings: Are design reviews held on video with screen sharing, and are notes sent afterwards?
  • Scope: Are the page list, languages, forms and delivery steps fixed in one document before you sign?
  • Live preview: Can you test the work on your own phone at a real staging address before launch?
  • German copy: Who writes or edits the German pages, and where do the Impressum and privacy notice come from?
  • Support: Which channel handles questions or outages, and how quickly should you expect a first reply?

Written answers protect you even if someone else takes over the site a year later. When an agency shows reference work, open the live sites on your phone rather than relying on screenshots. A search for web design Mülheim mostly lists agencies based in the Ruhr, but a local address says little about how a project is run; the answers above say much more.

Domain, hosting and accounts in your company's name

Every key to the website should be registered to your company from day one, so that changing agencies never means asking for anything back. For a Mülheim business this usually means a .de domain, a server inside the EU and a handful of Google accounts.

  • Domain: register the .de address with a registrar serving Germany or the EU, in your company's name and with a company e-mail address; the agency can be added as technical contact.
  • Hosting: the hosting contract is yours and the server sits in the EU; your company also signs the data processing agreement under Art. 28 DSGVO with the host.
  • Code and media: usage rights to the theme, plugins and custom code are granted in writing, and photo licenses are documented.
  • Google accounts: Business Profile, Search Console and GA4 are created under your account, with admin access granted to the agency.
  • Group structures: if a parent company abroad manages IT, agree early whether the domain sits with headquarters or with the German entity.

At handover, ask for an access sheet listing every service, its login address, the owner and which phone holds the two factor authentication. Make sure two people inside the company know where that sheet is kept.

The online project, step by step

A Mülheim project runs entirely on screen, and every step ends with a concrete result you approve. Our team is based in Istanbul; if you happen to travel there, you are welcome to meet us at our Ataşehir office, but no step of the project depends on it.

  1. Discovery call: on video we discuss your business, customers and competitors and look at your current site together.
  2. Written scope: page list, languages, forms, who supplies the legal texts and the delivery steps go into one document.
  3. Structure and content: we draft the menu and page outline and request photos, certificates and reference lists from you.
  4. Design review: the homepage and one inner page are presented with screen sharing, and changes are logged in writing.
  5. Build and preview: the site goes up on a real staging address so you can test it on your own devices.
  6. Launch and handover: the domain is connected, redirects and tracking are checked, and a short training session follows.

The status of every task is visible in our CRM, so nobody has to dig through e-mail threads to see who is waiting for what. Calls are scheduled around your working day, for example before a lab meeting or after a production shift.

The full list of deliverables is described on our web design service page.

Local search in Mülheim: profile, districts and reviews

For nearby searches, the Google Business Profile is often seen before the website, and the two must confirm each other. The business name on the profile has to match your real world name without added keywords, and service area businesses that visit customers can hide their address and define the area they cover instead.

  • Districts in context: a sentence such as "kitchen installations in Speldorf and Broich" belongs on a service page when it describes real work. A set of near identical pages, one per district, is what Google treats as doorway pages.
  • Directory consistency: name, address, phone and hours should match the site exactly on Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and industry directories.
  • Review routine: after each job, send a short link asking for a review, and reply in the language the review was written in.
  • Neighboring cities: if clients also come from Essen, say so plainly on your service pages; how search works next door is covered on the web design Essen page.

Map rankings depend partly on where the searcher stands, so results in Heißen and Saarn can differ for the same query. Keep the service area on the profile and the area sentence on the site in step; in web design Mülheim projects this is one of the first checks we run before launch.

Category choice, photos and monthly upkeep take ongoing effort; we can run that separately from the build as part of our SEO service.

German first, then English or Turkish where it pays

In Mülheim the main version of a business site is German; English and Turkish should be added only when a specific reader needs them. Most customers, the city administration, banks and German corporate buyers read German, and the Impressum and legal texts are prepared in German.

English makes sense when your clients include researchers at the Max Planck institutes, international students at Hochschule Ruhr West, relocating staff, or foreign buyers in the energy technology supply chain. For an international firm, English often serves decision makers while German serves local hiring and authorities.

Turkish has a concrete basis too: according to the Integrationsmonitoring NRW profile, 4,835 Turkish nationals lived in the city in 2024, the largest group of foreign nationals, not counting families who have become German citizens.

  • Separate URLs: each language lives in its own folder, never behind a widget that swaps text on the same page.
  • Reciprocal hreflang: every version references all the others and itself; one missing return link weakens the whole set.
  • Rewritten, not translated: English pages answer the questions an English speaker actually asks, such as registration steps or documents to bring.
  • Language switcher: labeled with language names rather than flags, and with no forced redirect based on location.

Before you open a language, decide who answers enquiries in it. An English form that gets a German reply loses the trust it just earned.

Speed, EU hosting and security

Your Mülheim visitors will mostly open the site on a phone, on a tram, in a lab corridor or on a building site, so speed and stability are part of the design. Google's Core Web Vitals count a page as good at the 75th percentile when LCP, the time until the largest content element loads, is 2.5 seconds or less; INP, how quickly the page responds to a tap, is 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS, how much the layout shifts, is 0.1 or less.

  • Local fonts: loading Google Fonts from Google's servers passes the visitor's IP address without consent; a Munich regional court awarded damages over this in 2022. Host fonts on your own server.
  • EU server: hosting in Germany or the EU, a signed processing agreement and backups kept in a separate location.
  • Images: plant, workshop and team photos served as WebP and resized for each screen.
  • Updates: the content management system and plugins are updated on a schedule, and unused plugins are removed.
  • Mail authentication: missing SPF, DKIM or DMARC records can push your quotes into spam folders; check yours with the SPF, DKIM and DMARC checker.

Measure on a real midrange phone before launch and have the results written into the handover document.

Sector examples that fit Mülheim

Mülheim's economic mix creates demand for site types that many cities of its size rarely need. The examples below follow the city's large employers and institutions; none of them implies a relationship with those organizations.

  • Energy technology suppliers: according to Siemens Energy, more than 4,600 people at its Mülheim site build turbines and generators or work in assembly, service and sales. A firm offering maintenance, welding, insulation or parts needs technical pages in German and English with certificates and equipment.
  • Service providers to a retail headquarters: the ALDI SÜD group's service company is based in Mülheim. Packaging, IT, cleaning or consulting firms should gather the documents a purchasing team asks for on one clear page.
  • Trades: plumbers and electricians need job photos, the area served and an emergency number on the first screen; a matching structure is shown on the plumbing company website page.
  • Practices with international patients: physiotherapists and doctors benefit from concise English service pages beside the German site; see the physiotherapy website page.
  • Campus services: furnished rentals, language schools and relocation helpers need English pages, clear hours and a direct contact path.

If one site has to serve several groups, give each group its own entrance. Two clear paths on the homepage, such as private and business customers, take visitors to the right page with one tap.

Legal basics for a website in Germany

A website run by an international firm's German entity follows German rules, whatever language it is written in. What follows is a general overview, not legal advice; have your texts checked by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).

  • Impressum: required for business sites under § 5 DDG; regulated professions also state their chamber, legal job title, the state that granted it and the applicable professional rules.
  • Privacy notice: if personal data is processed, a Datenschutzerklärung under the DSGVO, the German name for the GDPR, naming forms, maps and embedded videos individually.
  • Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, cookies and trackers that are not strictly necessary run only after the visitor consents.
  • Processor contracts: hosting, booking tools and newsletter services each need an Art. 28 DSGVO agreement.
  • Online shops: the order button must state the obligation to pay, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need withdrawal information. Since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz covers many consumer shops; check whether it applies to you.

An English version can carry translated legal pages for convenience; agree with your lawyer which version prevails. If you plan to sell online, we handle payment, shipping and invoicing flows within our e-commerce service.

Relaunching without losing rankings

If your current site has been found on Google for years, a relaunch has to map every changed URL; otherwise pages that took years to rank can disappear within weeks.

  1. Collect current URLs from the sitemap, Search Console and your analytics into one list.
  2. Assign each old URL a new counterpart; pages without one redirect to the closest topic.
  3. Activate 301 redirects on launch day and test sample URLs one by one.
  4. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and watch the indexing report closely for two weeks.
  5. Update links on the Business Profile, directory listings and social profiles.

Keep the staging site out of the index with noindex and remove that tag at launch. Google cannot read the noindex of a page blocked in robots.txt, so the two should never be mixed up for the same purpose.

If the company name or domain changes as well, give it its own line in the plan; the full process is on our website redesign page.

Common mistakes on Mülheim business sites

The same mistakes appear again and again on sites of small and midsize firms in Mülheim, and most can be avoided with a few decisions during setup.

  • English only: a German subsidiary with an English site loses local customers and applicants; build the German version first and add English next to it.
  • Translation widget: a machine translation button creates no separate pages for Google; use written pages per language with hreflang.
  • Imprint copied from headquarters: the parent company's details are not enough; the German entity needs its own Impressum with register and VAT details.
  • Tracking before consent: analytics and ad tags that fire before a choice is made should be replaced by a setup using consent mode.
  • District lists in the footer: ten Stadtteil names stacked at the bottom of a page help nobody; describe the places you really serve with job examples.
  • Supplier sites without proof: replace generic quality claims with certificates, equipment lists and a named contact person.

You can check these six points on your current site today. If more than one applies, rewriting the scope around them gives a cleaner result than patching each issue separately.

Take the list to your first agency call and ask how each item would be solved; the precision of the answers shows how well the team knows the German market.

What drives the budget

The budget for web design Mülheim projects depends on scope, not on the city; our prices do not change by city or country. These are the main factors that move a quote up or down:

  • Number of languages: each language means its own writing, review and a version of the legal pages.
  • Page types: how many service, product or capability pages you need and how much original content each requires.
  • Integrations: booking tools, CRM, payment providers or a connection to your ERP or inventory system.
  • Content production: copywriting, photography or technical drawings, and the quality of existing material.
  • Online sales: product count, variants, shipping rules and an order flow that meets German requirements.
  • Accessibility: if the BFSG applies, extra review time for contrast, keyboard navigation and form labels.

When comparing offers, send every agency the same scope document; otherwise you are comparing different jobs. Check whether maintenance, updates and hosting appear as separate lines.

The first 90 days and your next step

The three months after launch show whether the site actually brings enquiries in Mülheim, so tie that period to a plan from the start.

  • Days 1 to 30: verify Search Console and consent based GA4 tracking, confirm that form submissions and phone taps are recorded, and complete the Business Profile.
  • Days 31 to 60: rewrite titles and descriptions of pages with many impressions but few clicks, and ask first clients for reviews.
  • Days 61 to 90: sort enquiries by source, see which language and which district bring requests, and choose the next content step from that.

Keep the site moving during those weeks with small, regular changes: a new project photo, updated hours, an answer added to a common question. Visitors then see an active business rather than a brochure.

Before deciding on a partner, write down the site's first job, the languages you truly need and whose name the accounts will be in. Those three notes shorten any first call and sharpen the scope.

You can review what each package includes in the web design pricing section, and request a written quote for your own web design Mülheim project through the contact form, in English or German. On the first call we look at your current site together and agree which pages to start with.
