This guide is for international companies with an Essen entity, expat founders, engineering suppliers and practices that serve both German and English speaking clients. It covers the decisions behind web design Essen projects in the order you will face them: what the site must achieve, who searches for you, which rules apply in Germany and how to run the work remotely without losing control.
Every section gives you something concrete to do: a list to check, a question to put to whoever builds your site, or a setting to ask for. Nothing here replaces legal advice, so let a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) read your legal texts before they go live.
01What a Website Has to Do in Essen's Economy
In Essen, a company website mostly has to win trust from people who compare several providers in a few minutes. IT.NRW reports 2023 output of 31,672 million euros for the city, ahead of Dortmund and Duisburg, with services generating roughly 78% of gross value added. A service economy of that size means many firms chasing the same buyers, patients and guests.
Three audiences shape most Essen sites, and each needs a different first screen:
- Corporate procurement: Teams working for headquarters such as RWE and thyssenkrupp want capabilities, certificates, regions covered and a named contact before they ever call.
- Patients and clients: People choosing a practice, therapist or advisor want specialty, opening hours, insurance details and directions, readable on a phone.
- Visitors and new arrivals: Trade fair guests, visiting engineers and newly relocated staff want quick answers in English, from rooms and tables to registration help.
Write one sentence describing the single action each audience should take on your site, for example "request a supplier qualification call" or "book a first appointment". Those sentences decide the menu, the order of sections on the home page and which form fields you actually need.
02Who Searches in Essen, and for What
Search behavior in Essen splits along language, district and calendar, and a site that reflects those patterns reaches the right people. Locals type German queries with a district: "Zahnarzt Rüttenscheid", "Steuerberater Bredeney", "Sanitär Kupferdreh". Expats and visitors type English queries such as "English speaking dentist Essen" or "coworking near Essen Hauptbahnhof".
The calendar matters as much as the map:
- SPIEL in October: The board game fair brought 204,000 visitors from more than 80 nations to Messe Essen in 2024; searches for food, rooms and transport around Rüttenscheid and the Grugapark rise in the weeks before.
- The energy industry fair: Its trade audience, over 30,000 professionals in 2024, looks for meeting rooms, catering and short term services during working hours.
- Semester start: International students and researchers arriving at the Universität Duisburg-Essen search for housing support, language courses, insurance and doctors.
- Summer on the Baldeneysee: Cafés, boat rentals and event venues in the south see more local searches.
Build your own list by recording the words clients use in their first email or call over two weeks. If one writes "Steuerberatung" and another "tax advisor for expats", both phrases belong in the headings of their own language version.
03Hiring a Team Outside Germany: Keeping Remote Work Clear
For web design Essen projects, a team based outside Germany works as reliably as a local agency when every decision is written down and every stage can be checked on your own phone. Distance stops mattering once you have a written summary after each call and a preview link for each design and build step.
Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two in winter, so calls fit comfortably into an Essen working day. Ask any agency these questions before you sign:
- German copy: Who writes or edits the German text, and does a native speaker review it before launch?
- Legal pages: Who supplies the Impressum and privacy policy, and how will they be linked from every page and language?
- Live work: Can you open the team's current sites on your phone and test speed, forms and the language switch yourself?
- Response routine: Which channel do questions go through, how quickly are they answered and where is project status visible?
Our own approach and scope are described on the web design service page. Whoever you hire, the quote should list every page, every language and every account you receive at handover; "all inclusive" on its own is not a scope.
04Who Owns the Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Your company, not the agency, should be the registered owner of the domain, the hosting contract and every account; the agency only receives invited access. DENIC runs the central registry for .de names, yet you register through a commercial registrar, so look up the registrant entry and confirm it shows the same legal entity as your Impressum, not a former contractor or colleague.
At handover you should hold:
- Domain access: The registrar login and the AuthInfo code needed to transfer the domain.
- Hosting: A contract with a provider running servers inside the EU, plus a signed data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR (in German, AVV).
- Code and data: A complete backup of files and database, and source code for any custom module.
- Google properties: Business Profile, Search Console and analytics created in your own Google account, with the agency added as a user.
- Mailboxes: Admin access to email accounts on your domain.
For subsidiaries of international groups, decide early whether the Essen site lives on the group domain or its own .de domain. Group IT often controls DNS and tracking policies, so involve them before the design phase rather than a week before launch. Put the ownership list in the contract, with a named person responsible for each item.
05The Project, Step by Step and Fully Online
With Essen clients the whole project runs online, and each stage closes with a written approval. Our team works from Istanbul; we have no office or representative in Germany. If you travel to Istanbul anyway, we are happy to meet at our Ataşehir office, though no step depends on it.
- Kickoff call: We discuss your services, the areas you cover, your audiences and which language leads.
- Written scope: Pages, languages, forms, booking or quote flows and the content you will provide are listed in the quote.
- Content folder: Photos, Impressum details, certificates and opening hours are collected in one shared folder.
- Design approval: You approve the home page and one service page before any development starts.
- Preview and testing: You test the English and German versions on your own devices, as a client would.
- Launch and training: After launch, a short video session shows you how to update text, photos and hours.
Progress is visible in our CRM at any time, and you leave feedback there with screenshots instead of scattered emails. That keeps a clear record of what was requested, what changed and what is still open.
If your company needs internal sign off from a parent group, tell us at kickoff. We then plan an extra approval round after the design stage, so legal or brand teams see the pages before development rather than after it.
06Local SEO in Essen: Business Profile and Real District Names
When someone in Essen types a service plus "in der Nähe", Google tends to show its map pack before any website, which makes the Business Profile as important as the pages themselves. Use your actual trading name in the profile; stuffing it with phrases like "Dentist Essen Rüttenscheid English" violates Google's rules. Mobile businesses such as plumbers or cleaners may hide the street address and list the districts they serve instead.
Once the profile exists, work through these steps:
- Consistent details: Name, address and phone match exactly across the Impressum, the profile, Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and 11880.
- Real districts: Service pages name the places you genuinely work, such as Huttrop, Holsterhausen or Heisingen, together with real completed jobs.
- Reviews in both languages: Ask every satisfied client, and reply in the language the review was written in.
- Current photos: Show the entrance, the interior and the team, so first time visitors recognize the place.
Creating one near identical page per district is what Google calls a doorway page, and it can drag down the whole site. A separate page makes sense only when you have a branch, a team or documented work in that area. For ongoing local work, see our SEO service.
07English, German or Both: Planning Languages
In most web design Essen projects German remains the main language, with English added where a real audience reads it. Authorities, insurers and many corporate buyers expect German, and your legal pages must work under German law. English leads only when your clients are mostly international, such as relocation services, research suppliers or practices serving expat staff at the Universitätsklinikum Essen.
A Turkish version can also pay off: Essen has a long established Turkish speaking community, and services that rely on trust, such as insurance, property or home care, often get inquiries in Turkish.
- Separate URLs: Each language sits in its own folder; visitors are never forced into a language by location.
- Reciprocal hreflang: Every version references the others and itself; one way annotations may be ignored.
- Adapted copy: English pages answer the questions an expat actually asks, such as which insurance is accepted, rather than translating German sentences word for word.
- Legal links: Impressum and privacy policy are one click away from every language version.
The structural choices are explained on our multilingual website page. A quick way to decide the order: count the languages in your last fifty inquiries and complete the most frequent one first.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Your Essen visitors often load the site on a tram, in a clinic waiting room or between fair halls, which turns speed into a design question. Google judges Core Web Vitals on the 75th percentile of real visits: the main content should appear within 2.5 seconds (LCP), a tap should get a response within 200 milliseconds (INP), and elements should barely move while loading, with a CLS score no higher than 0.1.
Ask for these settings:
- Self hosted fonts: A Munich court (LG München I, 20 January 2022) awarded damages against a site that loaded Google Fonts without consent; serving fonts from your own server avoids that issue.
- Light images: Team, practice and project photos delivered as WebP and sized for each screen.
- EU hosting: A data center in Europe simplifies GDPR questions and keeps the path to Ruhr visitors short.
- Routine protection: SSL, regular updates, daily backups and spam protection on forms as standard.
Email deserves the same care, because quote requests that land in spam are lost business. Check that SPF, DKIM and DMARC are set for your domain with our email authentication checker. Embedded maps and videos also send visitor data to third parties, so load them only after consent or replace them with a static image and a directions link.
09Page Structures for Essen's Healthcare, Supplier and Fair Businesses
Essen's three strongest service fields need clearly different page structures, and copying one template across all of them leaves gaps. Essen.Gesund.Vernetzt counts around 48,000 healthcare employees and 16 hospital sites in the city, so practices compete on clarity rather than on claims.
- Practices and therapists: One page per specialty, accepted insurance (statutory and private), accessibility details and a plain note on languages spoken; the medical center website page shows a full structure.
- Engineering and maintenance suppliers: Scope of services, ISO or DIN certificates, regions covered, safety qualifications, a named contact and a downloadable company profile; see the industrial company website page.
- Relocation and expat services: Step by step pages on registration, housing and insurance, with an English contact form and clear statements of what you do not handle.
- Hotels and serviced apartments: Directions to Messe Essen and the Grugapark, room pages that load quickly and availability notes for fair weeks.
- Restaurants and cafés: An HTML menu that reads well on a phone, click to call and a short English section for fair guests.
Healthcare advertising in Germany is restricted by professional rules, so check wording with your chamber (Ärztekammer or Zahnärztekammer). For suppliers, keep the quote form short: company, contact, site location, a brief description and a file upload are usually enough.
10German Legal Basics Every Essen Site Needs
Whatever language the owners speak, a commercial site published in Essen is judged by German and EU rules, so put the legal pages into the plan before anyone opens a design tool. Treat the list below as orientation, and ask a lawyer about your specific case.
- Impressum: § 5 DDG requires business sites to publish provider details: name, address, contact and, where applicable, register and VAT numbers. Regulated professions add their chamber and legal job title.
- Privacy policy: A GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung that describes forms, booking tools and analytics one by one.
- Cookie consent: Under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies need prior consent; "Reject" must be as easy to find as "Accept".
- Accessibility: Since late June 2025 (28 June), the BFSG covers a wide range of online shops and digital services sold to consumers. Service businesses that count as micro enterprises, meaning under 10 employees and annual turnover or balance sheet total of 2 million euros or less, fall outside it; assess where you stand.
- Online checkout: Under § 312j BGB the order button must state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers need withdrawal information (Widerrufsbelehrung).
If you plan to sell online, building these rules into the shop from the start is far simpler than patching them in later. International groups should also check that consent settings on the Essen site match the group's privacy policy, since mismatches between the two are easy to spot for any visitor.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
In a web design Essen relaunch, what protects rankings is careful redirection of old addresses, not the new design itself. An Essen company site that has been live for years has pages Google knows and links from directories, partners and associations; if those URLs disappear, the trust they built disappears with them.
Run the relaunch in this order:
- Inventory: Export the pages with the most impressions over the last twelve months from Search Console, plus every URL with external links.
- 301 mapping: Point each old URL permanently to the closest matching new page; never send everything to the home page.
- Keep what works: Carry over titles, descriptions, structured data and internal links of pages that perform well.
- Post launch checks: Submit the new sitemap and review 404 errors and indexed page counts weekly for the first month.
When a German only site gains English pages, plan the URL structure and the redirects together, so the existing German addresses stay unchanged. If nobody can find the old logins, recover domain and hosting access first, because without it there is nowhere to set the redirects. The full process is on our website redesign page.
12Common Mistakes on Essen Company Websites
The problems below show up again and again on Essen company sites, and most can be fixed in an afternoon. Before commissioning a web design Essen project, hold your current site against these six points:
- No proof on supplier sites: Procurement looks for certificates and references; publish them on a dedicated page you can update yourself.
- Opening hours inside an image: Search engines cannot read them and nobody updates them; write hours as text and keep them aligned with the profile.
- English only legal pages: The Impressum and privacy policy should exist in German; an English version can sit alongside.
- Tracking before consent: Analytics and ad tags that fire before the banner is answered should wait until the visitor agrees.
- Fair content published too late: A SPIEL page that goes live two days before the fair will not be found; publish seasonal pages weeks ahead.
- A copy page for every district: Replace clones for Werden, Kray and Borbeck with one strong service page and real project examples.
Fixing two or three of these is often worthwhile even before a full redesign. Work in this order: legal gaps first, then search and map details, then visual polish.
13What Drives the Budget
The budget for web design Essen projects depends on scope, not on the city; our prices are the same wherever you are based. Knowing which items move a quote helps you decide what to build now and what to add later:
- Languages and copywriting: Will you supply English and German text, or should it be written from scratch, and is Turkish needed?
- Number of service pages: Each service with its own page strengthens search, but adds content and design work.
- Functions: Online booking, a quote wizard, a download area for certificates or a shop require more development than a brochure site.
- Integrations: Connections to booking systems, CRM or accounting software are separate line items.
- Visual material: Are current team and project photos available, or is a shoot needed?
Put two offers side by side and read the line items before the totals. A team that writes your German copy from scratch and a team that pastes in text you supply are quoting for different work. If the budget is tight, go live with the essential pages and add the second language or online booking in a second phase.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The first 90 days of a new Essen site are measured by the first real inquiries rather than the launch date. In days 1 to 30, the main pages, Impressum, privacy policy and consent banner go live, the Business Profile is aligned with the site and Search Console is connected.
In days 31 to 60, the second language is completed, hreflang is validated and the first search queries are reviewed. In days 61 to 90, the service page bringing the most inquiries is strengthened, and if SPIEL or another fair is approaching, its seasonal page is prepared. If you also serve clients along the Rhine, the approach on our web design Düsseldorf page may be useful.
Keep measurement simple during this period. Once a week, check how many forms and calls arrived, which pages they came from and how many direction requests the map profile received; those three figures show where to invest better than guesswork.
To prepare for a first call, you only need:
- A short list of your services and the districts or cities you cover.
- Your current site address, or two sites you like.
- A first idea of who will provide the English and German text.
Our packages and what each one includes are listed in the pricing section. To talk through your project, arrange a free 15 minute video call via the contact page; we follow up with the scope, schedule and quote in writing.
