This guide is for companies planning a new website in Kassel or replacing an old one: international firms with a team in North Hesse, research spinoffs from the university, suppliers to the automotive and energy sector, and hotels or restaurants that host guests from abroad. In web design Kassel projects, the important choices come before the first mockup: which buyers to convince, in which language, under which German rules.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered those choices the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something to check, decide or ask any agency you are talking to.
01The Role a Website Plays in Kassel's Economy
A Kassel website usually has to persuade two very different readers at once: a purchasing team comparing suppliers and a local customer or applicant comparing options on a phone. Destatis counted 197,230 residents in the city at the end of 2024, which makes Kassel the largest center in North Hesse and the commercial anchor for the surrounding district.
The Hessian State Statistical Office puts the city's 2024 economic output at 13.8 billion euros, 3.4% more than the year before. Output per resident was 69,822 euros, below Darmstadt at 97,917 and above Offenbach at 54,184. In practice that means a productive local economy with discerning buyers, many of whom will check your site before they reply to an email.
Before anyone designs anything, write down the first job your site must do; good web design Kassel projects start from that sentence. Here it is usually one of these:
- Win supplier approval: give a buyer at a large manufacturer your certifications, capacity and a named contact without a phone call.
- Recruit: show graduates and international applicants what working for you looks like and how to apply in minutes.
- Sell a product: explain a technical product from a spinoff clearly enough that a partner books a demo.
- Host visitors: give documenta and Bergpark guests opening hours, directions and booking links on a phone.
Whatever ranks first gets the first screen on mobile, the main menu slot and the primary conversion you measure.
02Who Searches for What Around Kassel
Search behavior in Kassel splits into local, professional and seasonal intent, and each needs a different kind of page. The city is divided into 23 districts under its main statute, and many residents search with the district name rather than the city.
- District searches: queries like "Zahnarzt Vorderer Westen" or "Fahrradwerkstatt Wesertor". Map results dominate, so address, hours and a tap to call number matter most.
- Professional searches: buyers looking for "Lohnfertigung Aluminium Hessen" or "EMS provider Germany" rarely type a city at all. Detailed capability pages with certificates do the work here.
- English searches: expats and international students search "English speaking doctor Kassel" or "apartment near university Kassel". A few good English pages can capture that demand.
- Seasonal searches: October brings new students looking for rooms, furniture and services; documenta summers bring visitors searching for food, tours and places to stay.
The university reported 21,352 enrolled students and 2,344 international students for the winter semester that began in October 2024. That is a large, phone first audience that refreshes every autumn and partly reads in English.
Run a short test: type your five most important search terms on a phone, once with a district and once with only "Kassel". Note whether maps, directories, ads or company sites appear on top. That list tells you which page types your web design Kassel brief actually needs.
03Working With a Partner Based Outside Germany
A partner outside Germany can serve a Kassel company well when the process is written, visible and easy to reach; distance is rarely what breaks a project. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and projects in Germany run fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Kassel in summer and two in winter, so working days overlap almost completely.
Ask every agency on your shortlist the same questions and request the answers in writing:
- Calls: how often are video calls scheduled, who leads them and who writes the decision notes afterwards?
- Scope: are pages, languages, forms and the source of legal texts listed in one written document before work starts?
- Previews: will you review designs as screenshots or on a live staging address you can open on your own phone?
- Response: whom do you contact when something breaks, through which channel, and how quickly?
- German rules: does the agency raise the Impressum, cookie consent and font hosting without being asked?
That last answer is a useful filter for any web design Kassel shortlist. A team that builds for German businesses should bring German legal basics into the first conversation. For an international firm with a Kassel team, also ask how the agency handles approvals when your decision makers sit in another country and another time zone.
04Owning Your Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Every core asset of your website should be registered to your company, with the agency added only as a user. This protects you when you change agencies, restructure or sell the business.
- Domain: register the .de domain with a registrar directly in your company name; the agency should never appear as the owner.
- Hosting: choose a server inside the EU, keep the contract and invoices in your name, and give the agency its own login.
- Code and content: request a full copy of files and database at handover, and make sure paid plugin licenses belong to you.
- Accounts: Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics should list your company as owner and the agency as manager.
- Email: mailboxes run on your own domain, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC records set up correctly so offers do not land in spam.
For international firms this matters twice. A Kassel subsidiary often ends up with a domain registered by a former employee or by headquarters in another country, and nobody in Hesse can change a single DNS record without a long email chain. Settle ownership in the contract, not after launch.
At handover, ask for an access register rather than a password list: service, account, owner, renewal date. It is the document the next team will need first.
05Our Project Process, Step by Step
An online project stays on track when every stage ends with a written approval. In our process nobody moves to the next stage until the previous one is signed off, and you can follow progress in our CRM at any time.
- Kickoff call: on video we cover your buyers, products, service area, languages and any approval chain at headquarters.
- Written scope: page list, languages, forms, who supplies the legal texts and delivery dates arrive in one document.
- Content collection: a shared folder for photos, certificates, product data and team bios, with a list of what is missing.
- Design and preview: the phone layout comes first, then desktop, both on a live staging address.
- Build and checks: German and English content goes in, forms are tested, consent behavior and speed are measured.
- Launch and training: the site goes live, is added to Search Console, and your team gets a short session on editing content.
Our team is based in Istanbul and Kassel projects run entirely on video calls. If you happen to travel to Istanbul, you are welcome at our office in Ataşehir, but a visit is optional and never part of the plan.
The slowest step is almost always content collection, especially product data and certificates that sit with different departments. Naming one person on your side who gathers them shortens a project more than any technical decision.
06Local Search in Kassel Without Doorway Pages
In web design Kassel projects, local visibility rests on a Google Business Profile whose details match your website exactly. For "near me" searches the map results come first, and they lean heavily on that profile.
- Business name: Google's guidelines require your real world name; adding keywords such as "Physio Kassel Mitte Sports" risks the listing.
- Service area: a mobile business, such as an IT support firm visiting clients, can hide its address and define areas like Kassel, Baunatal and Vellmar.
- Directories: keep name, address and phone identical in Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and industry directories.
- Reviews: after each job, send a short message with your review link; reviews in German and English both build trust.
Avoid doorway pages, the near identical pages that only swap a place name. Creating one page for each of Kassel's 23 districts and each town in the district is exactly what Google's spam policies describe. A stronger approach is one honest service area page that names the places you really serve and shows work done there.
Remember that the city of Kassel and the Landkreis Kassel are separate authorities, but customers cross that line constantly. Someone in Hofgeismar or Wolfhagen wants to know travel time and conditions, not see their town name repeated. If you want ongoing local work after launch, our SEO service covers profile care, content and reporting.
07Choosing Languages: German, English and Turkish
For web design Kassel customers will actually use, German stays the primary language for most companies, and English or Turkish is added where a real audience exists. Local customers, authorities and most regional buyers read German, and the Impressum and privacy notice must work under German law.
English earns its place when you sell abroad, recruit internationally or host visitors. University spinoffs often need English first product pages because their partners and investors read English, while their local suppliers and the tax office still expect German. A Turkish version helps service businesses whose customers partly speak Turkish, such as insurance, real estate or legal advice.
Before adding a second language, check these points:
- Audience: how many calls, emails or applications in that language did you receive in the last three months?
- Maintenance: who updates the English pages when a product, contact person or opening time changes in German?
- Depth: does the whole site need translating, or only products, careers and contact?
- Setup: does each language have its own URL, with hreflang annotations that reference each other?
Skip automatic translation widgets and build separate pages per language. hreflang tells Google which page is which language version; each version must reference the others and itself. You can draft and check the tags with our hreflang generator before launch.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Most visitors reach a Kassel site on a phone, often between tram stops or on a factory floor, so speed decides whether they stay. Google's Core Web Vitals give clear targets, measured at the 75th percentile of visits:
- LCP (largest contentful paint): how fast the main content loads; 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP (interaction to next paint): how fast the page reacts to a tap; 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS (cumulative layout shift): how much the layout jumps while loading; 0.1 or less.
Supplier sites often lose speed through huge product photos, embedded PDF catalogs and video backgrounds. Compressed WebP images, a text version of key specifications and video only where it explains a process keep pages light. Check how your current site behaves with our mobile friendly test before we talk.
Host on a server inside the EU and serve fonts from your own server. In January 2022 the Munich Regional Court awarded damages against a site owner who loaded Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent; local hosting avoids that issue entirely. On the security side, expect SSL, updated software, backups stored off the server and spam protection on every form as standard, plus two factor login for every admin account.
09Kassel Sector Patterns, From Supply Chain to Hospitality
Kassel's websites are shaped by its industrial supply chain, its university and its culture calendar, and each calls for a different structure. The regional development agency names automotive, mechanical engineering, energy and environmental technology as core fields and counts more than 30,000 companies in the city and district.
- Automotive and energy suppliers: capacity, machinery, tolerances, quality certificates and a request for quote, in German and English; see our manufacturer website page for the structure.
- University spinoffs: a product page that explains the technology in plain language, a demo request, a careers section and an investor friendly about page; the startup website page goes deeper.
- Hotels and guesthouses: room pages that read well on phones, links to your booking tool and English content for documenta and Bergpark guests; details on the hotel website page.
- International teams: a German entity page with the correct Impressum, English pages for the global brand and a clear route to the local contact.
For each pattern, ask what a visitor must see before they act. For a buyer that is a certificate and a name; for an applicant, the team and the process; for a guest, today's hours. If that item is not on the first screen, design quality will not save the page.
10German Legal Basics for a Kassel Website
A Kassel business site is subject to German rules even when it is written in English or run by a foreign parent company. The points below are a general orientation, not legal advice; have the final texts checked by a Rechtsanwalt, a German lawyer.
- Impressum: business sites need a legal notice under § 5 DDG, the German Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG) that replaced the TMG in May 2024.
- Privacy notice: forms, maps or analytics that process personal data require a privacy notice under the GDPR (DSGVO).
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and similar access to devices need the visitor's consent first.
- Processor contracts: booking tools, CRMs and hosts that process data for you need an agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
- Online shops: the order button must state the payment duty, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers must receive withdrawal information.
The accessibility law BFSG has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing online shops and services. Micro enterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros in turnover or balance sheet, are exempt; check whether it applies to you. For EU visitors, Google also requires consent mode for its measurement and personalized advertising features.
11Relaunching Without Losing Search Traffic
The real risk in a relaunch is not the new design but losing the addresses Google already knows. A Kassel company that has ranked for years with the same URLs can lose that position quickly if the new site launches without redirects.
- Inventory: export every old URL and the pages with the most impressions in Search Console.
- Mapping: assign each old URL a new one; pages without a match point to the closest relevant page.
- Redirects: set up permanent 301 redirects and check that no chains form.
- Staging: protect the test site with a password and remove any noindex tag at launch.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap and check 404 errors daily for the first weeks.
One technical detail trips up many teams: a page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex read by Google. To keep a page out of the index, leave it crawlable and mark it noindex.
Language folders deserve the same care. If your English pages lived under one path, keep that path or redirect each page individually, and update the hreflang set at the same time. Our website redesign page explains how we plan this.
12Common Mistakes on Kassel Company Websites
The same handful of problems appears on many Kassel company sites, and most are simple to fix. Compare your own site against this list:
- Headquarters template only: a global site with no German entity page. Add a Kassel page with the correct Impressum and a local contact.
- Tracking before consent: analytics and ad pixels fire on page load. Hold every non essential script until the visitor agrees.
- Certificates hidden in PDFs: buyers cannot find your quality standards. List them as text on a capability page with the PDFs as backup.
- Machine translated English: awkward phrasing undermines a technical offer. Write or edit English pages with someone who knows your field.
- Outdated hours and events: holiday times or documenta opening hours not updated. Manage hours in one place and update site and profile together.
- Careers page with no process: a list of jobs but no steps or contact. Explain what happens after an application and who replies.
Most of these mistakes come from treating the site as finished. A short review twice a year, for example before the winter semester and before summer, catches nearly all of them.
13What Drives the Budget
The cost of web design in Kassel depends on your decisions, not on the city; our prices are the same for every location. Clarifying the points below before you request quotes makes offers comparable.
- Languages: German only, German and English, or three languages; each adds writing and upkeep.
- Page count: how many product or service pages, capability pages and a careers section.
- Functions: quote forms, booking links, a shop, a customer login or connections to your CRM.
- Content effort: whether you deliver texts and photos or need them written and produced.
- Aftercare: whether maintenance, updates and SEO support are included after launch.
When comparing offers, read the scope lines rather than the total. A cheaper quote without the English version, legal page setup or a redirect plan tends to grow through change requests later. Our fixed packages and when we write a custom quote are listed on the pricing page.
A phased launch also keeps spending focused. A spinoff can start with German and English product pages and a careers section, then add a partner portal or shop once the first enquiries show what buyers ask for.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
Launch day is when measurement starts, and the first 90 days show whether the site brings real enquiries. Splitting that period into three blocks keeps it manageable.
- Days 1 to 30: watch indexing and errors in Search Console; test forms and the click to call link weekly.
- Days 31 to 60: start a steady review request routine and note which districts, towns and countries enquiries come from.
- Days 61 to 90: rewrite titles and descriptions of pages with many impressions but few clicks, and add missing product or service pages.
There is also a fixed date ahead: documenta 16 runs in Kassel from 12 June to 19 September 2027, and documenta fifteen drew more than 738,000 visitors in 2022. Hospitality and visitor businesses should publish English pages several months in advance so Google has time to discover them.
