Founders, managers and owners preparing a web design Göttingen project are the readers we had in mind: research spin offs, suppliers to measuring technology firms, practices and service businesses that work with international staff. Many of them are new to German rules or write their first company site in a second language.
Talha Aslan and team arranged the topics in the order a company usually has to settle them. You will find a check, a decision or a question for agencies in every part, useful whichever provider you finally pick.
01The job of a website in Göttingen's economy
A Göttingen website first has to decide whom it serves, because the city's buyers range from lab purchasing teams to students looking for a room. According to Destatis, Göttingen had 127,259 residents on 31 December 2024, and GWG, the city's economic development company, counts around 71,000 people working in about 10,000 businesses. A large share of that work is tied to the university, research institutes, measuring technology and life science.
Pick one primary job and at most one secondary job for the site. Typical choices here look like this:
- Technical evaluation: buyers at instrument makers or labs can check methods, equipment and certificates without a phone call.
- Investor and partner credibility: a spin off explains its problem, method and team well enough for a first meeting.
- Hiring: open roles, working conditions and a short application path that international candidates can follow in English.
- Local customers: calls, bookings and directions for people in Weende, Grone, Geismar or the surrounding towns.
Write the primary job as a single sentence before you request quotes. That sentence later decides what sits at the top of the home page, which action you measure as a conversion and which pages get built first.
02Search intent in Göttingen: who looks for what
People find Göttingen businesses through four kinds of searches, and every kind calls for its own page type. Mapping your own searches before the design starts prevents a home page that tries to answer everything at once.
- Specialist terms without a city: "torque calibration service" or "cleanroom cleaning for labs." These often come from purchasing departments across Germany and abroad and reward detailed service pages.
- District and nearby searches: "Zahnarzt Geismar" or "Fahrradwerkstatt Weststadt," usually typed in German on a phone. Map listings dominate these results.
- English searches by newcomers: "English speaking doctor Göttingen" or "furnished room near campus." Researchers and international students arrive throughout the year, with peaks before the winter semester in October and the summer semester in April.
- Event searches: during the International Handel Festival, usually in May, visitors look for restaurants, rooms and parking near the old town.
Run a quick test on your phone. Enter your five key terms three ways, with "Göttingen", with your district name and with no place at all, in both German and English. Note what appears first: maps, directories, ads, or company sites. That list shows which page types you need, and it is a useful starting point for any web design Göttingen briefing.
03Hiring a web team based outside Germany
A team abroad works well when every agreement is written down and every draft is visible to you at any time. Our studio sits in Istanbul and handles German clients entirely online. The clock difference is small: Türkiye runs an hour ahead of German time in summer and two hours ahead in winter, which leaves a long shared working day.
Put these questions to every provider on your shortlist and keep their written replies side by side:
- Who is your single contact person, and in which language are calls held, English, German or both?
- Do you receive written notes after each call with decisions and open items?
- Does the quote list pages, languages, features, rounds of revisions and explicit exclusions?
- Can you open drafts yourself on a protected preview address, including on your phone?
- Which person drafts or proofreads the German texts, and who verifies the technical vocabulary of your field?
Judge portfolios on a real device, not from images in a pitch deck. Everything we have built so far is in Türkiye, with live addresses on our references page; open a few of those sites on your phone, submit a form and watch how quickly pages respond.
04Keeping domain, server, source code and logins in your name
Before a single template is coded, every asset the site relies on should sit with your company, not with a vendor or an employee. This matters in a research city, where project teams and founding teams can change within a few years.
- Domain: register the .de or .com address through a registrar you choose, in the company's name, using a team mailbox such as info@ for notices, so a renewal reminder cannot get lost when someone leaves.
- Hosting: a contract with a provider whose servers are in the EU, with your own access to its customer area and to DNS, the records that point your domain at the web server and mail service.
- Code and licenses: written usage rights, delivery of the full source at the end, and fonts, images and plugins licensed to your company.
- Google accounts: create Search Console, GA4 and the Business Profile under a company login and give agencies user roles you can revoke at any time.
For spin offs there is one extra question: does the domain, logo and content belong to the new company, or still to an individual founder or the institute? Settle this before launch. Hosting companies and other services that handle visitor data also need a signed contract for processing on your behalf (Art. 28 GDPR, called DSGVO in German); keep it together with the list of logins.
05Our project process, step by step and fully online
We split a Göttingen project into six stages; none starts before you approve the previous one, and every approval is logged in our CRM. Meetings fit around lab shifts, consultation hours or shop hours.
- Discovery call: audiences, competitors in the region and existing material; you then receive a written page list and responsibilities.
- Words first: the outline and texts are settled before any visual work. Your part is facts, certificates, photos and the questions customers ask again and again.
- Look and feel: we show the start page plus one representative inner page on a call and as a clickable preview.
- Development: the full site takes shape on a password protected staging server, with legal pages, the consent tool, forms and analytics.
- Quality checks: we test forms, speed, popular phone models and each language before the domain is pointed at the new site.
- Go live: the switch happens on a weekday morning, every contact route gets tested once more, and your editors get a short training.
No step requires meeting in person. If you happen to travel to Istanbul, the discovery meeting or the design presentation can also take place at our office in Ataşehir.
06Map results, districts and the Landkreis
When people search by district or with "near me", your Google Business Profile decides most of the outcome, and the website adds the detail a profile cannot hold. Name, address, phone and hours have to match character for character in both places.
- Profile name: the real trading name, as printed on the door and the letterhead. Adding keywords such as "Physiotherapie Weende" breaks Google's Business Profile guidelines.
- Address or service area: a café in the old town shows its address; a technician who drives to clients in Rosdorf or Hann. Münden can hide it and list a service area.
- Listings: keep entries on Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and your trade's usual portals in line with the site.
- Reviews: ask after a finished job with a direct link, never in exchange for anything, and reply factually.
Separate pages for districts or towns are worth it only with genuinely different content, such as a second practice in Duderstadt or a workshop in Dransfeld. Google's spam policies treat near identical pages that only swap the town name as doorway pages. One service page that names Nikolausberg, Holtensen and Bovenden as areas you cover, with how visits work there, does the job better. If you would rather not handle profile updates and content yourself, our SEO work covers that.
07Languages: German, English and when to add Turkish
In Göttingen, English is often the language your partners read first, but German stays the legal and commercial base. A business site addressing the German market needs its Impressum and privacy policy in German, and most local customers and authorities expect German pages.
- English: the university reported about 27,600 students in the winter semester that began in autumn 2024, 17 percent from abroad, and the city hosts five Max Planck institutes, the German Primate Center and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Spin offs, suppliers with international buyers, landlords and practices gain the most.
- Turkish: useful for insurance brokers, translators, driving schools or practices whose clients prefer it, provided someone answers in Turkish.
- Any other language: only once a named person owns replies in that language.
Technically, each language gets its own URLs instead of a translation widget. The hreflang attribute tells Google which page belongs to which language; the references must be reciprocal and each page must also list itself. Our multilingual website page explains the setup in more detail. Keep one rule in mind: the English version may be shorter, but it must never promise anything the German legal pages do not cover.
08Page speed, where the server sits, and security
Core Web Vitals are Google's yardstick for how a page feels; a page passes when at least three out of four visits, the 75th percentile, meet each threshold. Make the three numbers a written target in the contract and request a test report before go live.
- LCP (largest contentful paint) measures when the largest visible element appears; it should come in at 2.5 seconds at most.
- INP (interaction to next paint) tracks the delay between a tap and the visible response; aim for 200 milliseconds at most.
- CLS (cumulative layout shift) captures unexpected jumps in the layout; keep it at 0.1 at most.
Students and commuters often open sites on regional trains or buses with patchy reception, so compressed images and few scripts matter more than effects. You can see how your current site behaves on a phone with our mobile friendly test. Choose hosting inside the EU and deliver typefaces from the same server as the site: a Munich court (LG München I) awarded damages on 20 January 2022 because a site loaded Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent.
On the security side, assign a person to four routines: certificates that renew by themselves, updates tried on staging before production, a daily backup kept off the main server, and individual logins protected by a second factor. Also set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC so quotes sent from your domain reach the inbox.
09Sector examples from Göttingen's science economy
Your sector decides the page set more than your company size does. The patterns below fit Göttingen's economy; they are general examples, not client stories.
- Suppliers to Measurement Valley firms: measuring technology companies in Göttingen have cooperated in this association since 1998. Firms supplying precision parts, calibration or software need one page per service with tolerances, equipment and certificates; the industrial company website page shows a fitting structure.
- Life science service providers: Sartorius, founded in Göttingen in 1870, still has its headquarters here. Cleaning, logistics or technical service for labs should document procedures, hygiene rules and contacts per shift.
- Research spin offs: a problem page, a method page in plain language, team and publications, and a contact route for investors. Software products add a demo request and pricing logic; see our SaaS website page.
- Housing and relocation for newcomers: rooms with distance to campus, video viewings and clear English answers on deposits and registration steps.
- Practices and tax advisers: service pages with process and required documents, online booking and an English summary for institute staff.
Use the closest pattern as a starting list, then add a page for every question that takes customers more than two sentences to get answered.
10German legal basics for international founders
German and EU rules shape the page structure and the tracking setup, which is why they are part of the brief from day one. What follows is orientation only; ask a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) to review your actual texts.
- Impressum under § 5 DDG: since May 2024 the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz sets the disclosure duty that the TMG used to cover. Expect to list the company name, postal address, contact data, legal form and commercial register details; doctors, tax advisers and other regulated professions add their chamber, protected job title, the country that awarded it and the applicable professional code.
- Privacy policy under the GDPR: required as soon as you process personal data, which includes contact and application forms.
- § 25 TDDDG: statistics tools, embedded maps from third parties and advertising pixels wait until the visitor agrees. Google additionally requires consent mode for its measurement and ad features when visitors come from the EEA.
- Accessibility (BFSG): the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz has applied since 28 June 2025 to a wide range of shops and digital services aimed at consumers. Very small service companies are excluded; confirm with your adviser whether your firm falls under it.
- Online shops: § 312j BGB asks for an unambiguous checkout button such as "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers must be told about their right of withdrawal.
If you plan to sell consumables or spare parts directly, our e-commerce service builds these requirements into the shop from the first draft.
11A relaunch that keeps your search positions
Search visibility carries over to a new site when each address Google already knows forwards permanently to the page that replaces it. Older Göttingen company sites often have pages on single test methods or products that have brought inquiries for years, and those are the first to vanish in an unplanned relaunch.
- List what exists: collect old addresses from the XML sitemap, Search Console reports and a crawler, and note which ones earn clicks or backlinks.
- Pair old with new: give each legacy page a destination, or decide to fold it into another or retire it; our redirect mapping tool speeds this up.
- Lock the test site: a password works, a robots.txt block does not, because Google cannot fetch a disallowed page and therefore never reads its noindex.
- Set the 301s: one hop per address to the exact counterpart, and no blanket forwarding to the start page.
- Watch afterwards: upload the fresh sitemap and keep an eye on not found errors and the page indexing report for a few weeks.
Moving to a new domain as well? Renew the old one indefinitely and file the move with Search Console's address change feature. Avoid launching in the weeks before the semester starts if students are a large part of your business.
12Common mistakes on Göttingen websites
Most weaknesses sit in content and technical details, not in the visual design. These six patterns are typical for sites in a university city, each with a better alternative:
- Jargon without a plain summary: a page only peers understand loses buyers and investors. Better: one sentence in everyday language at the top, technical detail below.
- Datasheets only as PDFs: awkward to zoom on a phone and poorly understood by search engines. Better: key specifications as page text, with the PDF as an extra download.
- English through machine translation: awkward wording and no separate URLs. Better: reviewed English pages with hreflang.
- Consent banner that tracks anyway: analytics loads on page view regardless of the choice. Better: block tags until a visitor accepts, then confirm in the network tab of your browser.
- Outdated Impressum: still citing the TMG or missing the register number. Better: review it against § 5 DDG whenever the company details change.
- Only Gänseliesel stock photos: the landmark says nothing about your company. Better: real photos of your lab, workshop, team and rooms.
13What drives the budget
A postcode never changes our pricing; a web design Göttingen quote depends on scope, languages and functions. The biggest levers are these:
- Page templates: the number of distinct layouts, such as service, instrument, job ad and contact, matters more than the number of pages.
- Language versions: each one needs coordination, copy and someone who answers inquiries in it.
- Integrations: booking, quote forms with file upload, a shop, or a connection to your ERP or CRM.
- Content: whether copy and pictures exist already, or whether labs and machines still need to be photographed and described.
- Legacy URLs: how many old addresses must be mapped during a relaunch.
You lower the effort most by arriving prepared: service descriptions already drafted, the questions customers ask most, and a single decision maker for approvals. When you compare quotes for web design Göttingen, ask what each item does for the primary job from the first section; effects that serve no goal cost load time and maintenance.
Also decide who edits the site after launch: a team updating semester offers twice a year needs a simpler editor than a supplier adding instruments weekly, and a maintenance contract can cover updates and backups.
14The first 90 days and your next step
The quarter after launch tells you whether the site works, as long as each month has one defined purpose. A plan for the period after a web design Göttingen launch can look like this:
- Month one: make sure phone taps, form submissions and bookings show up in GA4 as key events for visitors who consented, and clear any errors Search Console reports.
- Month two: look at the queries and districts that bring impressions, rewrite weak titles and invite your first customers to leave a review.
- Month three: add answers that real inquiries showed were missing, compare the English and German versions, and prepare content for the next semester start or festival season.
Many single language sites of moderate size match a fixed package in our pricing overview; multilingual sites, quote systems and shops get an individual quote. Reach us through the contact form, after which we arrange a short video call and send the scope in writing.
Bring three things to that call: your primary job as one sentence, the list from your search test, and who currently holds the domain and account logins. That is enough to turn a first web design Göttingen conversation into a workable plan.
