This guide is for international companies, founders and expat professionals who run or are setting up a business in Bergisch Gladbach: suppliers to the life science and food producers, consultants, practices serving international families, and service firms that want to reach English and German speakers alike. A web design Bergisch Gladbach project mixes German legal duties, German search habits and an international audience, and most of the important decisions are made before anyone opens a design tool.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered the topics the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends with something you can check yourself, decide on, or ask any agency you are considering.
01The job a website has in this district town
Effective web design Bergisch Gladbach companies can rely on starts from one fact: the site must win trust quickly from people who are rarely in town during the day and from buyers who judge suppliers on paper before they ever call. Destatis lists 111,361 residents on 31 December 2024. IT.NRW counted 42,973 employees subject to social insurance living in the city on 30 June 2024, and 29,585 of them commuted to a job elsewhere, mostly toward Cologne.
The same statistics office reports that disposable household income per resident in 2022 was above the state average and above neighbouring Cologne and Leverkusen. A dated or sloppy website is noticed here.
Before any design work, write down the one or two jobs your site must do first. Typical ones in Bergisch Gladbach:
- Qualifying B2B enquiries: a lab services or maintenance firm proving to a procurement team that it meets their standards.
- Booking international clients: a therapist or relocation consultant helping staff who moved here for a biotech role.
- Winning evening calls: a trades firm catching homeowners who search on their phone after the commute.
- Recruiting: a careers page for specialists who compare Bergisch Gladbach with Cologne before applying.
Whatever ranks first on that list gets the first screen on a phone, and the menu, forms and measurement follow from it.
02Who searches for what, from Refrath to the Strunde
Search in Bergisch Gladbach splits into three groups, and each needs a different kind of page. Locals usually search in German and by district, because the city grew out of separate villages and people still identify with Bensberg, Refrath or Schildgen more than with the city as a whole.
- District and service, in German: "Kinderarzt Refrath", "Steuerberater Bensberg" or "Malerbetrieb Paffrath". Map results dominate, so address, hours and a tap to call number decide the click.
- Expats, in English: "English speaking dentist Bergisch Gladbach", "relocation service Cologne east" or "international kindergarten near Bensberg". Fewer searches, very clear intent.
- Procurement, without a place name: "GMP cleaning contractor", "cleanroom maintenance NRW" or "packaging supplier food industry". Here capability pages and certificates matter, not the map.
- Weekend visitors: people heading to Schloss Bensberg or the Alte Dombach paper museum looking for lunch, parking and opening times.
One local trap: online, Bergisch Gladbach is easily confused with Mönchengladbach, a separate city on the other side of the Rhine. Always write the full city name in titles and copy, never just "Gladbach", so that both users and Google place you correctly.
Try this test: search your five most important services on your phone, once with your district and once with the city name, and note what appears first: maps, ads, directories or company sites.
03Working with a team outside Germany, done properly
A search for "web design Bergisch Gladbach" mostly shows agencies from the region, yet location matters less than process. A partner without a German office works well when decisions are written down, progress is visible and people answer quickly; distance itself is rarely the problem. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul and run projects in Germany fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours ahead in winter, so working days overlap for most of the day.
Ask every agency the same questions, whether it sits in Cologne, Düsseldorf or Istanbul, and get the answers in writing:
- Language of the project: Will calls be in English or German, and who writes and proofreads the German copy?
- Written scope: Does one document list pages, languages, functions, rounds of revisions and what is explicitly excluded?
- Live preview: Can you open designs and the build on a protected test address from your own phone at any time?
- Decision log: Do you receive a written summary of what was agreed after every call?
- Cover: Who takes over when your contact person is on holiday or ill?
Judge references live, on your own phone. Our work so far is in Türkiye and listed with addresses on our references page; apply exactly this test to it.
04Domain, hosting, code and accounts in your name
Everything your website depends on should be registered to your company before the first line of code is written. Otherwise switching providers, or fixing an outage, depends on the goodwill of a former supplier, which is a poor position for a firm whose Impressum must always show current contact details.
- Domain: register the .de address through a registrar of your choice in the company's name, with a shared role mailbox as contact and auto renewal switched on.
- Hosting: a contract with a data center inside the EU, your own login to the customer area and to DNS, the system that connects your domain to the web server and mailboxes.
- Code and licenses: written usage rights, handover of the source code, and font, image or plugin licenses in your name.
- Google accounts: Search Console, GA4 and the Business Profile owned by a company account; agencies get user access that you can revoke.
- Two admins: at least two people from your company with full rights in every account, which matters for international teams with frequent staff changes.
With your host and any other provider that processes visitor data, including booking tools and newsletter services, you sign a data processing agreement under Art. 28 of the GDPR (in German, Auftragsverarbeitungsvertrag). Keep these contracts and a list of all logins and roles in a company password manager, not in one person's inbox.
05The project in six steps, entirely online
A web design Bergisch Gladbach project with us runs in six steps, and you approve the result of each one; progress is visible in our CRM at any time. We schedule calls inside your working hours, including early slots before lab shifts or site visits start.
- Kickoff call: goals, audiences, competitors and existing content; the outcome is a written document with the page list, languages and responsibilities.
- Structure and copy: page outlines and texts come before visuals; you supply facts, photos and the questions clients ask you most.
- Design: the home page and one typical inner page, presented on a call and as a browser preview; the rest follows once you approve.
- Build: development on a protected staging site with legal pages, consent banner, forms and measurement in place.
- Testing: forms, speed, rendering on common phones and every language version are checked before the domain moves.
- Launch and handover: the site goes live, and a short video session shows your team how to update content.
If your travels take you to Istanbul, you are welcome to visit us at our Ataşehir office, but no step depends on it. Start collecting copy and photos right after the kickoff, since they usually take longest.
06Local search: Business Profile, directories and districts
For local searches, a complete Google Business Profile with your real address and hours does more than any other single measure. The business name must match the name on your sign and in your commercial register entry; adding keywords such as "English Speaking Physio Bensberg Refrath" breaks Google's guidelines.
- Service area: businesses that visit clients, such as trades or mobile care, can hide their address and list the districts they really serve, for example Moitzfeld, Herkenrath or Hand.
- German directories: Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and sector platforms such as Jameda for doctors should carry exactly the same name, address and phone number as your site.
- Reviews: ask after each job with a short link or QR code, never offer gifts in return, and reply in the language the review was written in.
- Bilingual profile: write the profile description in German, and mention in one sentence that consultations are also available in English.
District pages only make sense when they carry real local content, such as projects in that district, typical housing there or local access and parking details. Copying one text and swapping place names creates what Google treats as doorway pages, which can weaken the whole site.
Many clients will also come from across the border in Cologne's eastern districts such as Dellbrück or Holweide; say so plainly on your service pages. If Cologne is a market in its own right for you, see our page on web design in Cologne. For ongoing local visibility work we offer our SEO service.
07German first, then English or Turkish where it pays
German should be the main language of almost every website in Bergisch Gladbach, with English and Turkish added only when a concrete group of readers needs them. Local clients, the city, chambers and many procurement teams read German, and the Impressum and privacy policy are written in German in any case.
English pays off when you work for the city's internationally active employers, serve staff who moved here for those jobs, or sell to buyers abroad. Turkish can help trades, insurance or real estate firms whose clients prefer to read detail in their first language. Use these criteria:
- Enquiry language: in the last month, how many calls or e-mails reached you in English?
- Sales documents: do you already write offers, certificates or onboarding packs in English?
- Maintenance capacity: can someone update every language on the same day when hours, staff or services change?
- Scope: does every page need a translation, or only services, contact and frequently asked questions?
Technically, each language lives at its own URL, the versions point to each other and to themselves with hreflang annotations, and the language switcher uses language names rather than flags. English pages should be written for their readers, not machine translated; we explain the setup on our multilingual website page.
08Speed, EU hosting and security settings
A commuter searching on the sofa in the evening closes a slow page within seconds, so speed is a design decision, not a technical afterthought. Google's Core Web Vitals set three "good" thresholds at the 75th percentile of visits: LCP, the time until the largest content element loads, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, the delay before the page responds to a tap, at 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS, which measures layout shifting, at 0.1 or less.
- Images: lab, product or project photos in WebP, sized to the screen and lazy loaded below the first screen.
- Fonts: served from your own server, not from Google; the Munich Regional Court (LG München I) awarded damages on 20 January 2022 over Google Fonts loaded without consent.
- Server: an EU data center, a current PHP version and server side caching.
- Security: SSL, automatic updates, daily backups and two factor login for the admin area.
- Third party embeds: booking widgets, maps and videos load only after consent or a click.
Before our first call, measure your current site with our mobile friendly test and bring the result along. For offers and invoices sent by e-mail, correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC records lower the chance of landing in a procurement team's spam folder.
09Sector examples from Bergisch Gladbach's economy
According to IT.NRW, on 31 December 2024, 61.9% of employees working in the city were in services other than trade, hospitality and transport, while production and construction accounted for 20%. That mix shapes which websites are needed most, and each has its own critical page.
- Contract cleaning and facility services: firms working in labs and production areas need pages on hygiene standards, staff training, insurance and certificates, in German and English; see the cleaning company website page for the structure.
- Physiotherapy and health practices: a short "what happens at your first appointment" page for patients with a prescription, English explanations of insurance questions and an online booking link; details on the physiotherapist website page.
- Life science startups: product and technology pages, a demo or sample request form and a careers page, English first and German where customers need it.
- Relocation and consulting: service packages, a clear first step and a booking route for staff arriving with a job offer from a local employer.
- Trades for homeowners: service pages for roofs, bathrooms and gardens in districts with many detached houses, project photos and a quote form with photo upload.
The common test for all of them: a visitor sees the service and the area they care about on the first screen and can reach you in two taps.
10German legal basics, in general terms
International firms in Germany follow the same website rules as any German company, and the legal pages should be planned as part of the design from the start. The points below are general information, not legal advice; please have the final texts checked by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: required for business websites under § 5 DDG (Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, which replaced the TMG on 14 May 2024), with name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register and VAT numbers. Regulated professions such as physiotherapists or doctors also state their chamber, legal job title, the state that granted it and the professional rules.
- Privacy policy: required under the GDPR as soon as personal data is processed; forms, booking tools and analytics are each described.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and similar access to devices need consent first, and "reject" must be as easy as "accept".
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) covers many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and at most 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet total, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: the order button must state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers receive cancellation information (Widerrufsbelehrung).
We implement the technical side; who supplies the legal texts, and by when, is written into the scope.
11Redesign without losing rankings
The biggest loss in a redesign comes from deleting addresses that Google already knows without redirecting them. A service page that has appeared for "Gebäudereinigung Bergisch Gladbach" for years loses that position if it moves to a new URL without a redirect.
- Inventory: export every old URL, the pages that receive clicks in Search Console and those with links from other sites.
- Mapping: match each old URL to the closest page on the new site, and mark consciously those that have no equivalent.
- 301 redirects: set the mapping up as permanent redirects and avoid chains.
- Launch day: submit the new sitemap in Search Console and confirm that the staging noindex tag is gone.
- First weeks: check 404 errors and the indexing report weekly and add any missing redirects.
Update the website link in your Business Profile and in directories such as Gelbe Seiten as well. If you add English pages for the first time, they need no redirects, but think twice before changing the structure of German URLs that already bring enquiries; Search Console shows which ones those are. Our website redesign page covers the process in more detail.
12Common mistakes on Bergisch Gladbach websites
The problems below are especially costly in a district driven market like Bergisch Gladbach, and most can be fixed in hours rather than weeks. Here are six, each with a better alternative:
- Writing only "Gladbach": it invites confusion with Mönchengladbach; use the full city name and your district in titles instead.
- Machine translated English: procurement readers notice it at once; translate fewer pages, but have them written properly for an international reader.
- An Impressum copied from an old template: texts citing the TMG are outdated; use one prepared under the DDG and checked by a lawyer.
- Certificates hidden in a PDF: buyers search the page, not your downloads; name each certificate in text with its scope and validity, and offer the PDF as well.
- Long contact forms: mandatory fields for budget, address and dates get abandoned on phones; ask for name, contact, a short description and optional files.
- Tracking before consent: a visible banner is not enough if scripts already fire in the background; test consent mode and document the result.
You can check your own site against these six points in about ten minutes and bring the findings to a first call.
13What drives the budget, without numbers
Scope, not location, sets the cost of a website; our prices are the same for a web design Bergisch Gladbach project as for any other city. Knowing what moves a quote up or down makes offers far easier to compare.
- Number of languages: each language adds writing, review and ongoing maintenance; German plus a focused English section is often wiser than a full mirror.
- Pages and content: the number of services, case studies and who writes the copy decide much of the effort.
- Integrations: booking tools, CRM, file uploads for quote requests or links to accounting and recruiting systems.
- Online sales: a shop that follows German consumer law is a separate scope because of payment, shipping and cancellation processes.
- Photography: your own photos, a professional shoot or licensed images.
Compare offers on the same page list and language scope, and ask each agency whether hosting and maintenance are included. Who handles updates after launch also matters: if your team learns the content system, ongoing costs stay smaller. Our packages and what each includes are in the pricing section; bilingual setups and special requests are quoted in writing.
14The first 90 days and your next step
The three months after launch show whether your web design Bergisch Gladbach investment brings enquiries, and planning them matters as much as the design. Track calls and form submissions rather than visitor numbers, with GA4 in consent mode and a simple sheet or CRM for leads.
- Week one: test forms, the call button and consent in every language yourself, and add the new link to your Business Profile.
- Month one: ask recent clients for reviews and note which district and service searches you appear for in Search Console.
- Month two: add the three questions you hear most often to your FAQ, and fill gaps in project or product photos.
- Month three: sort enquiries by source (map, search, referral) and check whether the English pages are actually used; widen or narrow them accordingly.
If you want to clarify which pages, languages and districts matter for your company, the simplest start is a short video call. Tell us about your business in English or German through our contact form, and we will send you a written scope and quote.
