This guide is for international companies, research spinouts, production teams, expat services and hosts in Potsdam who need a website that works in English and still meets German expectations. Web design Potsdam projects rarely serve one audience: a funding partner in Boston, a guest arriving from Copenhagen, a postdoc at the Golm campus and a German procurement officer may all open the same homepage in the same week.
Talha Aslan and team have ordered the decisions the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends with something you can act on: a test to run, a question to put to any agency, or a decision to write into the scope.
01What a Website Has to Do in Potsdam's Economy
A Potsdam website has to earn trust quickly with several very different readers, because the city's economy rests on government, research, film and tourism at once. Destatis counted 184,754 residents on 31 December 2024, which makes Potsdam the largest city in Brandenburg, well ahead of Cottbus at 95,123. It is also the state capital, so ministries, agencies and their suppliers are part of everyday business.
The research side is concentrated in the Potsdam Science Park in Golm, home to three Max Planck institutes, two Fraunhofer institutes and three faculties of the University of Potsdam, with roughly 13,000 people working, researching or studying there. Film has its center in Babelsberg: Studio Babelsberg is described as the oldest large scale film studio in the world, and Potsdam became Germany's first UNESCO City of Film in 2019.
Before you brief anyone, rank your readers by how much revenue or funding they bring:
- Investors and grant bodies: they want the problem, the technology and the team in under a minute.
- Industry partners in Germany: they expect German pages, a complete Impressum and a named contact.
- International talent: they look for open roles, working language and what relocating to Potsdam involves.
- Visitors and guests: they need photos, directions and opening hours on a phone.
The first screen of your homepage belongs to the reader at the top of that list.
02Search Intent in Potsdam: Who Looks for What
Searches around Potsdam split along three lines: neighborhood, season and language. Knowing which line your customers follow tells you which pages to build first.
- Neighborhood searches: queries such as "Kinderarzt Bornstedt", "coworking Babelsberg" or "Steuerberater Potsdam Zentrum Ost" trigger the local map pack, so address, hours and a tap to call number matter more than design flourishes.
- Visitor searches: "bike rental Sanssouci", "breakfast Dutch Quarter Potsdam" or "Glienicke Bridge tour" peak in spring and summer and drop in winter.
- Expat searches: "English speaking dentist Potsdam" or "relocation service Potsdam" come from people who already live nearby but do not yet read German comfortably.
- Brand checks: after a conference talk or a grant call, people type your company name; they should find a current site and a consistent profile, not an old placeholder.
Run a quick test on your own phone: type your five most important queries once in German and once in English and note what ranks on top, whether a map, a directory, a university page or a competitor. The gap between those results and your current site usually shows which page type is missing.
Many people living in Berlin's southwest also include "Potsdam" in searches for services in Babelsberg or Griebnitzsee, so a clear service area line on your contact page helps both groups. The same pattern applies when you look for an agency: a search for "web design Potsdam" mostly returns local studios, and the next section explains how much location really matters.
03Working With a Team Outside Germany
Working with a remote team succeeds when every decision is written down and every stage is visible to you, not when the studio sits around the corner. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and every web design Potsdam project we take on runs fully online. Istanbul is 1 hour ahead of Potsdam in summer and 2 hours ahead in winter, so working days overlap almost completely.
Ask every agency you speak to, wherever it is based, the same questions and request written answers:
- Who runs the video calls, and do you receive a written summary of decisions after each one?
- Does the scope list pages, languages, revision rounds and what is explicitly excluded?
- Can you open the current state of the build at any time on a password protected preview link?
- Who writes or edits the German copy, and is the formal "Sie" used consistently?
- Who covers your project when your main contact is on leave?
Judge live work rather than screenshots. Our completed projects are in Turkey for now and are listed with their addresses on our references page; open three on your phone, send a test enquiry and judge us the way you would judge a studio in Babelsberg. Mark German public holidays and Turkish religious holidays in the shared calendar at the start, so approvals never stall for a week without anyone noticing.
04Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts in Your Name
Every account your website depends on should belong to your company from day one, never to the agency, a former cofounder or a student assistant who has since moved on. Spinouts are especially exposed here, because early sites are often set up on a researcher's personal login.
- Domain: register the .de domain, and the .com if you work internationally, through a registrar you control, in the company's name, with a shared role address as contact.
- Hosting: a data center inside the EU, a contract in your name and your own login to the hosting panel and DNS settings.
- Code and licenses: source code handed over, usage rights transferred in writing, font and stock photo licenses held by you.
- Google accounts: Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile owned by the company; the agency is added as a user and can be removed at any time.
- Two admins: at least two people with full access on every account, one of them a founder or managing director.
Every provider that processes visitor data, from the host to a booking or newsletter tool, needs a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO in German). Keep these agreements, the account list and renewal dates in one folder, and review it whenever someone leaves the team.
05The Project Process, Step by Step and Fully Online
A project with a Potsdam company runs in six stages, and each stage closes with your written approval. Calls are held in English or German, and meetings are scheduled around your lab, shoot or service hours rather than ours.
- Discovery call: goals, priority readers, languages, competitors and the material you already have; the result is a written scope with a page list and responsibilities.
- Structure and copy: sitemap and core texts come before design; you supply facts, photos, publications and the questions partners ask most.
- Design: the homepage and one inner page are presented on a video call and on the live preview; remaining pages follow after approval.
- Build: Impressum, privacy policy, consent banner, forms and measurement are set up on a password protected staging site.
- Testing: forms, speed, common phone models and every language version are checked before the domain is switched.
- Launch and handover: go live on a weekday morning, test every contact path on the live site and train whoever will update content.
None of these steps requires travel. If your team visits Istanbul, we are glad to hold the discovery or design meeting in person at our office in Ataşehir. On your side, name one person who decides on content and one who checks the German wording; approvals that wait on a busy principal investigator are the most common reason a schedule slips.
06Local SEO in Potsdam: Profile, Neighborhoods, Directories
Local visibility depends on your website and your Google Business Profile telling exactly the same story. The business name on the profile must match the name on your door or letterhead; adding keywords such as "Potsdam English Dentist" breaks Google's guidelines and can cost you the listing.
- Category: choose the narrowest primary category that describes your business, and add secondary categories only for services you really offer.
- Address or service area: if clients do not visit you, hide the address and list the areas you actually serve, such as Babelsberg, Potsdam West or Werder (Havel).
- Directories: keep name, address and phone identical on Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and the platforms of your field.
- Reviews: ask satisfied clients with a short link and reply calmly to every review, including critical ones.
- Photos: entrance, interior and team; for visitor businesses, images that change with the seasons.
Create neighborhood pages only where you have something specific to say. A set of near identical pages for Golm, Fahrland and Groß Glienicke counts as doorway pages in Google's terms and weakens the whole domain. Any web design Potsdam proposal that promises dozens of district pages should prompt a follow up question about what each one will actually contain.
A page earns its place with real local content: a project in that area, directions from the nearest tram stop, or hours specific to that location. For structured data, internal links and content planning, see our SEO service.
07Languages: German First, English and Turkish With a Purpose
For most Potsdam businesses German remains the main language, and English or Turkish versions pay off only when a defined audience needs them. German is the language of most local customers, authorities and partners, and your Impressum, privacy policy and terms must be available in German.
According to the city's statistics office, about 10.5 percent of overnight stays in 2024 came from guests from abroad, so even hotels see a mostly German speaking clientele. The calculus is different for research and tech companies:
- English as the main version: spinouts whose investors, hires and customers are international, with a complete German version for local partners and authorities.
- English as a secondary version: hosts, tour providers and practices that serve visitors or expats.
- Turkish as an addition: insurance, tax, translation or healthcare services where part of the clientele prefers to discuss details in Turkish.
Each language belongs on its own URLs, and the versions must point to each other and to themselves with hreflang, the annotation that tells Google which page serves which language. You can prepare the tags with our hreflang generator. Write each version for its reader rather than translating line by line; a funding partner and a local supplier ask different questions.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Potsdam sites tend to be heavy on images and video, so speed problems usually come from media files rather than the server. A showreel or a gallery of the Neuer Garten that takes five seconds to appear on a phone loses the visitor before the first frame.
Google's Core Web Vitals give clear targets, measured at the 75th percentile of visits: LCP, which measures how fast the largest element loads, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, which measures how quickly the page responds to a tap, at 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS, which measures layout shift, at 0.1 or less.
- Images: serve WebP files in several sizes so each screen loads only what it needs.
- Video: show a poster image and load the player only on click, instead of embedding a heavy file on page load.
- Fonts: host all fonts, including Google Fonts, on your own server so no visitor IP address goes to a third party without consent.
- Hosting: an EU data center, automatic SSL renewal and daily backups stored off the server.
- Maintenance: a fixed monthly update day for the CMS and plugins, and two factor login for every admin.
Ask for mobile results in writing before launch. You can check any page yourself with our mobile friendly test; a verbal "it is fast" is not a measurement.
09Sector Examples From Potsdam
Potsdam's mix of science, film, hospitality and services means each type of business needs its own structure; a single template stretched across all of them fails every reader a little.
- Research spinouts: a one paragraph explanation of the technology, a product page per application, team and publication lists and a contact path for partners; the startup website page covers this structure in detail.
- Software companies: product tours, documentation entry points, security and data residency notes for German buyers and a trial or demo request flow.
- Film and post production: credits by project, equipment and stage pages, a showreel that loads on demand and a quick availability request for producers on tight schedules.
- Photographers and camera crews: galleries that stay fast on a phone, clear usage rights and a booking enquiry; see the photographer website page.
- Expat services: relocation consultants, English speaking therapists and tax advisers who need plain English service pages alongside German legal pages.
If part of your clientele sits across the Havel in the capital, the web design Berlin page explains how search habits differ there. For any sector, start by listing the three facts a buyer needs before contacting you, and put all three on the first screen.
10Legal Basics for Websites in Germany
A commercial website in Germany has to meet several legal duties before it is judged on content, and these apply regardless of where the owner or agency is based. We handle the technical setup; we recommend having the texts themselves reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: under § 5 DDG, the name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register entry and VAT ID; regulated professions add their chamber, legal job title and professional rules.
- Privacy policy: a GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung that lists the tools the site actually uses.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and analytics may run only after consent, and declining must be as easy as accepting.
- Accessibility: the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises offering services are exempt, so check whether it covers you.
- Online sales: an order button with wording such as "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB) and withdrawal information for consumers.
Loading Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent led to a damages ruling by the Munich Regional Court on 20 January 2022. Hosting fonts locally removes that issue entirely. Research groups should also check whether third party embeds, such as publication databases or video platforms, set cookies before consent.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
The real risk in a relaunch is not the new design but old URLs disappearing without redirects. A page that has ranked for years for a specific service or technology loses that position if its address changes and the old one returns an error.
- Inventory: export every URL from the old site and mark the pages with the most clicks in Search Console.
- Mapping: match each old URL to the closest new page by content, not by convenience.
- Permanent redirects: activate 301 redirects at the moment of launch and avoid redirect chains.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap and check 404 errors daily during the first weeks.
- Profiles and links: update the website link on your Business Profile, directories, university partner pages and press releases.
Keep the staging site private with a password, not with a robots.txt block; Google cannot read a noindex on a page it is not allowed to crawl. Spinouts that change their name after a funding round face the same task across domains, and the redirect plan should be part of the rebrand budget from the start. Content that already performs, such as a well read FAQ, can move to the new design unchanged.
12Common Mistakes on Potsdam Websites
Most recurring problems on Potsdam sites come from trying to serve a mixed international and local audience with one generic page. Each item below pairs the mistake with a better approach.
- English only legal pages: the Impressum and privacy policy exist only in English; instead, provide them in German and link an English courtesy version.
- Research jargon on the homepage: the first paragraph reads like an abstract; instead, state the problem you solve in one plain sentence and move the detail to a technology page.
- Autoplay showreels: a full video loads before anything else; instead, use a poster image and load the video on click.
- Seasonal hours left unchanged: winter times still show in May; instead, manage hours in one place and update the Business Profile at the same time.
- Tracking before consent: analytics fire as the page loads; instead, set up consent mode and trigger tags only after approval.
- A team page frozen in time: people who left two years ago are still listed; instead, assign one person to review it every quarter.
Go through the list on your own site in five minutes. If two or more items apply, write them into the scope before you request quotes.
13What Drives the Budget
Scope, not location, sets the cost of a website, and web design Potsdam quotes are no exception; a Potsdam company chooses from the same fixed packages as a business in Istanbul. When you compare offers, check that each of these items is written into the quote:
- Languages: every extra language means new copy, review and hreflang setup.
- Number of pages and products: separate pages for each application or service take far more work than one overview.
- Media: whether photos and video exist or need a shoot or edit.
- Functions: booking requests, job listings, gated downloads or a customer portal; larger platforms belong to custom software development.
- Migration: moving content from the old site and building the redirect map.
- After launch: the extent of maintenance, updates and content support.
The sound way to reduce cost is to narrow scope, not quality. Launching a complete English or German core with three key pages, then adding the second language or a publications section, works better than shipping everything half finished. Clarify early whether copy, photos and translations come from you or from the agency; that is where most quotes differ.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The first three months after launch are for measuring whether the site brings enquiries and for making small, informed corrections. For a Potsdam company, a practical plan looks like this:
- Days 1 to 30: fix indexing errors in Search Console, align the Business Profile with the site and start counting calls and form enquiries with consent based tracking.
- Days 31 to 60: see which pages lead to enquiries, add the questions partners ask most to the relevant pages and ask recent clients for reviews.
- Days 61 to 90: add the second language or a new section if the data supports it, and refresh photos and hours ahead of the next season.
By the end of that period you should know which page produced which enquiry, in which language and from which area. Because tracking depends on consent, numbers will be incomplete; asking "how did you find us" on every first call fills the gap.
Before deciding on a web design Potsdam partner, answer three questions: who is the site for, in which language, and with which proof. Clear answers make the rest of the project fast. You can see what each package includes in our pricing section, and you can tell us about your project; after a short video call we send a written scope and quote. Every web design Potsdam enquiry is handled the same way, with the decisions in writing from the first call.
