Web design for companies in Germany

Web Design in Berlin

Berlin runs on two working languages. Your investors, hires and first customers may read English, while local clients, landlords and authorities expect German. Talha Aslan and team build fast websites for both audiences, with the German legal pages in place, and run the whole project online with a written scope and live progress in our CRM.

In short

Web design in Berlin usually means two languages from day one: English for international customers and talent, German for local clients and German legal duties such as the Impressum and cookie consent. Berlin saw 498 startups founded in 2024, more than any other German city, according to the German Startups Association. Talha Aslan and team work with Berlin companies fully online, with a written scope and progress tracked in our CRM.

Berlin's business profile

What should a website do for a company in Berlin?

With 3,685,265 residents at the end of 2024 (Destatis), Berlin is Germany's largest city, and its economy produced 207.1 billion euros of output in 2024 according to the Berlin Brandenburg statistics office. Four strengths of the capital shape what a website here has to deliver.

Growth led by the digital economy

Berlin's real GDP grew by 0.8% in 2024 while Germany's shrank by 0.2%, and information and communication accounted for half of the city's growth. In a market like this, buyers judge even a small company by how fast and clear its website is.

Germany's startup capital

The German Startups Association counted 498 startups founded in Berlin in 2024, the highest number of any German city. An early stage website has to convince investors, candidates and pilot customers at once, go live quickly and grow with the product.

Visitors from around the world

Berlin welcomed 12.7 million guests and 30.6 million overnight stays in 2024, including 4.7 million guests from abroad; the United Kingdom and the United States led overnight stays among foreign markets. Hotels, restaurants, tours and venues need English pages, mobile friendly menus and booking paths.

A calendar of international trade fairs

Messe Berlin hosts leading trade fairs such as ITB, InnoTrans, Fruit Logistica and Grüne Woche. Exhibitors and trade visitors search for services, food and transport during those weeks, so sites with clear English and German information stand a better chance of being chosen.

How we work

Our team is in Istanbul; your Berlin project runs online

We have no office, representative or staff in Germany; Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul. With Berlin companies, discovery, design approval and launch all happen over video calls in English or German. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Berlin in summer and two hours in winter, so our working days overlap almost completely.

Before any design work, we put in writing who the site has to win over: customers in Germany, buyers abroad, investors or future hires, and in which language each of them reads. Language versions, who supplies the legal texts and the timeline all go into the written scope; if you are travelling through Istanbul, we are happy to meet there too.

Process

From brief to launch in four steps

  1. Discovery and scope

We define your business, your audience and the site’s one-sentence job: who it sells what to, through which action. Scope and timeline are written from that answer.

  2. Design approval

The home page and key templates come to you as designs first; no code is written before your approval. We do not like surprises, and we do not cause them.

  3. Development

The approved design becomes fast, secure, maintainable code. You follow progress in the CRM and see every page in a staging environment before launch.

  4. Launch and measurement

The site goes live with analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking connected; panel training is given, first-year hosting and maintenance included.

Web Design Berlin: Sites for Startups, Expats and International Teams

Talha Aslan and teamLast updated: 15 min read

This guide is written for founders, international companies with a Berlin entity and expat professionals who need a website that works in English and still satisfies German expectations. Many web design Berlin briefs start with a logo and a color palette; the decisions that matter more are which language leads, which German legal duties apply and who will own the accounts once the site is live.

We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered those decisions the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends with something concrete: a question for an agency, a check you can run yourself or a choice to put in writing.

The Job a Website Does in Berlin's Economy

In Berlin, a website is often the first serious test a company faces, because investors, candidates and customers all look it up before they reply. The city had 3,685,265 residents at the end of 2024 according to the Destatis municipal directory, more than any other German city, and its economy leans heavily on digital work.

The Berlin Brandenburg statistics office reported that Berlin's real GDP grew by 0.8 percent in 2024 while Germany's shrank by 0.2 percent, and that information and communication delivered half of that growth. Buyers in a market shaped by software companies notice slow pages, vague copy and broken forms quickly.

Before any design work, decide which audience the site must win first. In Berlin it is usually one or two of these:

  • Customers: people or companies who should book a demo, request a quote or call, in English, German or both.
  • Investors: readers who want the problem, the product, the team and traction they can verify, without marketing fog.
  • Candidates: engineers and specialists comparing employers, who look for open roles, working language, location and how hiring works.
  • Partners and authorities: banks, landlords and public offices that expect German legal details and a clear company identity.

Rank them in writing. The ranking then decides the navigation, the homepage and what you measure.

How People Search in Berlin, in Two Languages

Berlin search behavior splits by language as much as by intent, so the same service may need an English page and a German page with different wording. Expats often add a language qualifier, while locals search with a neighborhood or a German trade term.

  • Neighborhood searches: "physiotherapist Prenzlauer Berg", "Steuerberater Charlottenburg" or "coworking Friedrichshain". Map results lead here, so the page needs an address, opening hours and a phone number people can tap.
  • Language qualifiers: "English speaking dentist Mitte" or "English tax advisor for freelancers". These visitors want proof that the whole process, not just the website, works in English.
  • Brand checks: investors and candidates search your company name plus words like jobs, funding or reviews; the first results should be your own pages.
  • Event searches: visitors to ITB, InnoTrans, Fruit Logistica or Grüne Woche look for catering, interpreters, transport and dinner venues around fair dates.

Run a quick test on your phone. Type your five most valuable searches in both languages, note who appears at the top and what kind of page it is, and you will see which page types your site is missing.

The same logic applies when you look for an agency. Typing web design Berlin into Google mostly shows local studios, which is a fair start, but location is only one criterion, as the next section explains.

Choosing a Partner Based Outside Germany

A remote partner works when the process is visible and written down, and that matters more than the postcode of the studio. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and projects in Germany run fully online; Istanbul is one hour ahead of Berlin in summer and two hours ahead in winter, so the working days overlap almost entirely.

Whether a candidate sits in Kreuzberg, Lisbon or Istanbul, ask the same questions. Insist on written answers:

  • Who runs our video calls, in which language, and do we get a written summary of decisions after each one?
  • Does the scope list every page, language, integration and revision round, plus what is explicitly excluded?
  • Can we open the work in progress on a protected preview address at any time, without waiting for a presentation?
  • Who writes or reviews the German copy, and who checks that English and German say the same thing?
  • Who covers our project when our contact person is on holiday?

Then look at live work rather than mockups. Our projects so far are in Türkiye and listed with their addresses on our references page; open three of them on your phone, send a test form and judge them exactly as you would judge a studio around the corner.

Owning the Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts

Everything the site depends on should belong to your company from day one, not to a founder's personal account or to the agency. Startups change people and providers often, and a domain or analytics property stuck in a former cofounder's inbox becomes an expensive problem.

  • Domain: registered to the company, whether a GmbH, a UG or a foreign parent, through a registrar you control, with a shared mailbox as contact and auto renewal on. Our WHOIS lookup shows what is publicly recorded for any domain you already use.
  • Hosting: a contract in the company's name with servers in the EU, plus your own login to the provider's panel and to DNS, the system that points your domain at the web server and mail.
  • Code and licenses: usage rights in writing, the source code handed over, and fonts, themes or stock images licensed to you.
  • Google accounts: Search Console, GA4 and the Google Business Profile owned by a company account, with agencies added as users you can remove.
  • Two admins: at least two people inside the company hold full rights everywhere.

Any provider that processes visitor data for you, from the host to a newsletter tool, needs a data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR. Store these agreements next to an access register that lists every account, its owner and its renewal date.

Our Project Process, Step by Step and Online

Every web design Berlin project with us moves through six stages, and each one closes with your written approval, tracked in our CRM. Calls sit inside your working hours, and English or German both work for meetings and documents.

  1. Discovery call: audiences, languages, competitors and existing material; the outcome is a written scope with a page list and owners for every piece of content.
  2. Structure and copy: the page tree and the core texts come before visuals, because a pricing table or a careers page shapes the layout.
  3. Design: the homepage and one inner page first, shown on a call and on a live preview; the rest follows after sign off.
  4. Build: development on a protected staging site, including German legal pages, consent banner, forms and analytics.
  5. Testing: forms, speed, common phones and every language version are checked before the domain switches.
  6. Launch and handover: a weekday morning switch, a live test of every contact path and a training session for your editors.

Nobody needs to travel for any of this. If you happen to be in Istanbul, though, we are glad to hold the discovery or design meeting at our office in Ataşehir.

Local Search in Berlin Without Doorway Pages

For neighborhood and "near me" searches, your Google Business Profile does most of the work, and the website supplies the depth behind it. The two must show the same name, address, phone number and hours, down to the spelling of the street.

  • Business name: the real name on your door and invoices. Google's guidelines do not allow added keywords such as "English Dentist Mitte" in the profile name.
  • Address or service area: a clinic or café shows its address; a mobile service that visits clients can hide it and list districts such as Pankow or Tempelhof instead.
  • German directories: Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and sector portals like Jameda for doctors should carry identical details.
  • Reviews: ask every satisfied client with a direct link, never offer anything in return, and reply calmly in the language the review was written in.

Create a separate area page only where you have something real to say, such as a second practice in Charlottenburg or a team based in Adlershof. Pages that only swap the district name are doorway pages under Google's spam policies and add nothing for real customers.

Berlin is a city and a federal state at once, and many service areas continue into Brandenburg, toward Potsdam or Teltow. Mention those towns on your service pages instead of cloning pages; if you want ongoing work on the profile, reviews and content, our SEO service covers it with monthly reporting.

English First or German First: Language Strategy

Which language leads depends on who pays you, not on the language your team speaks in the office. A SaaS company selling across Europe can lead in English; a practice, agency or shop serving Berlin residents usually needs German as the main version, with English for the international crowd.

  • English lead: product companies, international recruiting and investor relations. Berlin's statistics office counted 4.7 million foreign guests among 12.7 million in 2024, with the United Kingdom and the United States leading foreign overnight stays, so hospitality also needs strong English.
  • German lead: anything sold to German consumers, the Mittelstand or public bodies, and every legal page.
  • Turkish as a third language: Berlin's resident register counted 197,274 people of Turkish origin at the end of 2024, which can justify a Turkish version for practices, insurance brokers or travel services.

Each language needs its own URLs, ideally in a folder per language, rather than a translation widget that search engines cannot index as a separate version. Annotate the versions with hreflang: every page lists all its alternates and itself, and a fallback entry can send visitors with no matching language to a language chooser.

Generate the tags with our hreflang generator, then check one page per language in the source code. Keep the German version complete for the pages that carry sales and legal weight, even if blog posts stay in English.

Speed, EU Hosting and Security

Google measures page experience with Core Web Vitals, and a page counts as good when 75 percent of visits meet three thresholds. Put them in the scope as targets and ask for a measurement before launch.

  • LCP, loading: the largest visible element, usually a hero image or headline, appears within 2.5 seconds.
  • INP, responsiveness: the page reacts to a tap or click within 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS, visual stability: layout shift stays at 0.1 or below, so buttons do not jump while the page loads.

Startup sites often lose speed to third party scripts: chat widgets, scheduling embeds, heatmaps and several analytics tags at once. Load only what the ranked goals need, and only after consent where consent is required; check the result on a phone with our mobile friendly test.

Host in an EU data center and serve fonts from your own server. A Munich regional court awarded damages on 20 January 2022 because a site loaded Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent, passing visitors' IP addresses. Add HTTPS everywhere, scheduled updates, off site daily backups with a tested restore, two factor login, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your mail domain.

Berlin Sector Patterns From SaaS to Clinics

The right page set depends on your sector more than on your size. These are general patterns that fit Berlin's mix of companies, not client stories.

  • Startups: the German Startups Association counted 498 new startups in Berlin in 2024, against 203 in Munich and 161 in Hamburg. A launch site needs a sharp problem statement, product pages, a demo or waitlist form, careers and a press kit; see our startup website page.
  • SaaS companies: pricing logic, documentation links, security and data residency answers, integrations and customer proof, as described on our SaaS website page.
  • International firms with a Berlin entity: a German contact page with the local GmbH details, a careers section for the Berlin team and clear routing of enquiries to the right office.
  • Practices serving expats: doctors, therapists, lawyers and tax advisors need factual service pages, the professional details German rules require and an appointment path that works in English.
  • Hospitality and venues: menus as text rather than PDF, room or event pages readable on a phone and a link to the booking tool you already use.

German Legal Basics for an English Website

Writing in English does not exempt a Berlin business from German rules, so plan the legal pages into the structure from the start. Have the final texts checked by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt); what follows is an overview, not legal advice.

  • Impressum under § 5 DDG: name and address, legal form and managing directors for companies, contact details including e-mail, the commercial register and number, and the VAT identification number where one exists. Regulated professions add their chamber, legal job title, the state that granted it and the professional rules.
  • Privacy policy: required under the GDPR whenever you process personal data, linked from every page and form.
  • Cookies under § 25 TDDDG: storing or reading non essential information on a device needs prior consent. For visitors in the European Economic Area, Google also requires consent mode for measurement and personalized advertising features.
  • Accessibility: the BFSG has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing online shops and services, with an exemption for micro enterprises providing services. Check whether it applies to you.
  • Online shops: under § 312j BGB the order button must state the payment obligation clearly, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers must receive withdrawal information.

When you sell online, our e-commerce development builds these pages and checkout rules into the first draft rather than adding them at the end. Before you sign with any provider, ask to see the order button and the withdrawal page on a shop they have already launched.

Relaunching Without Losing Search Traffic

A relaunch keeps its rankings when every old URL with visits or links redirects to its closest new equivalent. Berlin companies often relaunch when they raise money, rebrand or add a German version, and each of those moments changes URLs.

  1. Inventory: export every URL from the sitemap, Search Console and a crawl, with clicks, impressions and backlinks.
  2. Mapping: decide for each old page whether it stays, merges or goes, and give it a new address in a spreadsheet everyone can see.
  3. Staging: protect it with a password. A page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex read by Google, so blocking alone can leave staging URLs in search.
  4. Redirects: permanent 301 redirects straight to the target, without chains and never in bulk to the homepage.
  5. After launch: submit the new sitemap, watch coverage and 404 reports for several weeks and update links in your profile and directories.

If the domain changes too, keep the old one and use the change of address tool in Search Console. Avoid launching in the week of a funding announcement or a trade fair, when traffic peaks and nobody has time to fix errors.

Common Mistakes on Berlin Company Websites

Many weak sites fail on content and compliance details rather than design. Here are six frequent mistakes, each with a better alternative:

  • English only, Impressum missing: the site looks international but ignores German duties. Instead, publish a complete Impressum and privacy policy and link them from every page in every language.
  • A cookie notice that only informs: "by using this site you agree" is not consent under German rules. Instead, use a banner with equal accept and reject options and load tracking only after acceptance.
  • Machine translated German: it reads as careless to German buyers. Instead, have a native speaker write or edit the key pages.
  • Careers page frozen in time: closed roles and departed team members signal stagnation to candidates. Instead, connect the page to your applicant tool or review it monthly.
  • Brandenburg Gate stock photos: they tell visitors nothing about you. Instead, show your team, product and workplace, even with simple photography.
  • Demo forms that ask for everything: long forms cost leads. Instead, ask for name, work e-mail and one qualifying question, then follow up.

What Drives the Budget

The city does not change the price; effort comes from scope, languages and features. Comparing web design Berlin quotes is easier when each one is broken down by these drivers:

  • Page types: how many distinct templates are designed and built, such as product, pricing, careers and blog, matters more than total page count.
  • Languages: each version needs writing or editing, review and its own approvals.
  • Integrations: CRM, applicant tracking, booking, payment or product data from your app.
  • Content production: whether copy, photos and product screenshots exist or must be created.
  • Migration: how many URLs must be mapped and redirected.
  • Ongoing care: updates, backups and monitoring handled by you or under a maintenance plan.

The fastest way to reduce effort is preparation. Arrive with approved messaging, real screenshots and one person who can sign off for the company, and revision rounds shrink accordingly.

Ask every studio for a quote broken down by these drivers. A web design Berlin offer that shows only one total makes it impossible to see what you are paying for, or what was left out.

The First 90 Days and Your Next Step

The first three months after launch show whether the site does its job, provided each month has a clear task. A simple plan looks like this:

  1. Month one: confirm that demo requests, calls and forms register as key events in GA4 with consent respected, and that Search Console shows no indexing errors.
  2. Month two: review which queries, languages and neighborhoods bring visitors, then sharpen titles and the copy of weak pages.
  3. Month three: add answers to questions that came up in sales calls, compare enquiries by language and decide where time or ad budget goes next.

A single language site with a clear scope often fits one of our fixed packages, listed in the pricing section of our web design page. Multilingual builds, SaaS sites and shops are quoted in writing after a call. Send us the basics through our contact form, and bring your ranked audience list and five key searches; that turns a web design Berlin enquiry into a plan quickly.

Whichever studio you choose, treat these three months as part of the project. A website is finished when the right people find it and get in touch, not on launch day.
