This guide is for founders, managers and expats who run or open a business in Magdeburg: research spinoffs, engineering consultancies, logistics firms, language schools, practices and shops that serve an international crowd. A web design Magdeburg project rarely fails on visuals; it fails when a site cannot speak to German customers and English speaking partners at the same time, or ignores German legal duties.
We, Talha Aslan and team, ordered the decisions the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends with something you can act on: a check to run, a question to put to any agency, or a decision to write down.
01What a Website Has to Do in Magdeburg's Economy
In Magdeburg a business website has to earn trust from very different readers: public bodies, research partners, freight buyers and neighborhood customers. Destatis counted 244,329 residents on 31 December 2024, a city close in size to Braunschweig and Halle, so reputation travels quickly and a weak first impression is noticed.
Four groups shape what visitors expect from your pages:
- Government and its suppliers: as capital of Sachsen-Anhalt, the city hosts ministries and agencies; firms pitching to them need a complete Impressum, references and downloadable documents.
- Researchers and engineers: Otto von Guericke University, Fraunhofer IFF and a Max Planck institute draw people who read technical English and judge clarity fast.
- Freight and warehousing buyers: the port runs 365 days a year independent of Elbe water levels, so shippers look for capacity, certifications and a named contact.
- Local customers: someone in Stadtfeld or Sudenburg wants opening hours, an address and click to call within seconds.
Write one sentence that names the group your homepage speaks to first. If you serve two, give the first screen two clear doors, for example "For companies" and "For private clients", each leading to its own page. That sentence becomes the brief for every page that follows.
02Who Searches for What in Magdeburg
Searches in Magdeburg split by district, by language and by the academic calendar, and each split can call for a different page. Before planning a site map, collect the phrases your customers actually type.
- District and proximity: German queries like "Physiotherapie Stadtfeld", "Fahrradwerkstatt Buckau" or "Steuerberater in der Nähe" show a map pack first.
- English queries around campus: new students arriving for the winter semester in October look for "English speaking dentist Magdeburg", room listings, phone plans and translation services.
- Partner and supplier checks: a research partner or procurement officer searches your company name and expects a current site, an English summary and a clear team page.
- Riverside visitors: cyclists on the Elbe cycle route and visitors to the cathedral search for places to eat, stay and rent bikes, often on a phone.
Run a quick test. Type your five most valuable searches on your phone, first in German, then in English, and note what fills the first screen: maps, directories, competitors or ads. The gaps tell you which page types are missing.
When looking for an agency, the same logic applies: typing "web design Magdeburg" mostly surfaces studios based in the city. How much that address matters is the subject of the next section.
03Working With a Team Outside Germany
A project with a team in another country works when decisions are written and progress is visible; distance rarely causes the trouble, vagueness does. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, we have no office, representative or staff in Germany, and projects for Magdeburg run fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two in winter, so most of the working day overlaps.
Put the same questions to every agency you shortlist for web design Magdeburg, local or remote, and ask for written answers:
- Do you send a short written recap of the decisions after every video call?
- Does the quote list pages, languages, revision rounds and what is out of scope?
- Can I open the current build on a password protected preview link at any time, without waiting for a meeting?
- Who writes or edits the German copy, and is the formal "Sie" used consistently?
- Who looks after my project when my main contact is on leave?
Judge live work, not screenshots. Our delivered projects are in Türkiye so far, and they are listed with their addresses on our references page; open a few on your phone, send a test inquiry and judge us exactly as you would judge a studio around the corner. Mark German public holidays and Turkish holidays in the shared calendar from day one, so approvals do not stall for a week.
04Owning Your Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Every account your site depends on should be registered to your company from the first day, not to the agency, a former employee or a friend who helped out. Otherwise switching providers turns into a negotiation, and an outage turns into a crisis.
- Domain: register the .de address through a registrar account in your company's name, with auto renewal switched on and a shared mailbox as the contact.
- Hosting: a data center inside the EU, a contract in your name and your own login to the control panel and DNS settings.
- Code and licenses: source code handed over, usage rights transferred in writing, font and image licenses documented.
- Google accounts: Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile owned by you; the agency is added as a user you can remove.
- Two admins: at least two people at your company with full access to each account.
For spinoffs this matters twice. Investors and later acquirers often ask who owns the domain and the code; a site registered to a doctoral student who left the team is an avoidable problem during due diligence.
On handover day, ask for a one page access sheet: each service, its login address, the account owner and the renewal date. Add an exit clause to the contract that states in which format and within how many days files, database and backups are delivered if you part ways.
05The Project Step by Step, Fully Online
An online project stays predictable when every stage ends with a deliverable and an approval. With a Magdeburg business we work in this order:
- Kickoff call: a 15 minute video call on audience, languages and the services that matter most.
- Written scope: page list, language plan, who supplies the legal texts and the delivery stages in one document.
- Content collection: photos, service descriptions, publications and FAQs go into a shared folder; missing items show up in our CRM.
- Design approval: the homepage and one service page are shown on a preview link, phone first, then desktop.
- Build and testing: forms, consent banner, speed and hreflang links are tested on real devices.
- Launch and training: a recorded session shows your team how to update content.
No stage requires an in person meeting. If your travels take you to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet the team at our office in Ataşehir and review the project together.
The biggest accelerator sits on your side: one person who can approve. Research groups and young companies often route designs through several people; agree in advance who gives the final yes, or the approval loop will take longer than the build itself.
06Local Search: Business Profile and Real District Names
For "near me" searches in Magdeburg, the Google Business Profile usually appears before any website, so the site supports the profile rather than replacing it. Google's guidelines require the profile name to match your real world name, without added keywords.
- Primary category: choose the category that earns most of your revenue; "Language school" and "Translator" rank in different packs.
- Honest districts: a practice in Leipziger Straße should mention only the nearby districts it truly serves, such as Reform or Hopfengarten, and say so in plain sentences.
- Review routine: after each job send a short link in German and English, and answer every review calmly, critical ones included.
- Directory listings: keep name, address and phone identical in Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and industry directories.
Creating a near identical page for every district is tempting and risky. Google treats thin pages built only to catch place names as doorway pages. Instead, describe your service area on one strong page with real examples, from Olvenstedt in the west to Cracau east of the river, and the towns around the city you serve.
Treat the profile as a weekly habit: one new photo, current holiday hours, answers to questions. Our SEO service covers this routine if you prefer to hand it off.
07German First, English and Turkish Where They Pay Off
German remains the default language for almost every Magdeburg business; English and Turkish earn their place only when real readers use them. Banks, landlords, authorities and most customers will judge you in German.
English pays off around the university: more than 30% of the roughly 12,500 students at Otto von Guericke University come from abroad, according to the university. Landlords, language schools, phone shops, practices and cafés near campus often win customers with English pages. For spinoffs and engineering firms, English is the working language of partners and funders, so it may deserve equal weight. Turkish helps where clients prefer to explain a problem in their first language, for example in insurance, travel or translation services.
Before adding a language, answer these questions:
- How many inquiries in the last three months arrived in English or Turkish?
- Is there someone on your team who can reply in that language within a day?
- Who updates that version when prices, hours or staff change?
- Which pages truly need translating, and which can stay German only?
Each language belongs at its own URL, and versions must reference each other with hreflang, an annotation that tells Google which version serves which reader. You can draft the tags with our hreflang generator and check that every version also points to itself. Avoid translation widgets; write each language for its readers.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Most visitors open your site on a phone, between lectures or on the tram, and a slow page sends them to a competitor. Google's Core Web Vitals describe that experience with three numbers, measured at the 75th percentile of visits:
- LCP: how long the largest element takes to load; 2.5 seconds or less is good.
- INP: how quickly the page responds to a tap or click; aim for 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS: how much the layout shifts while loading; 0.1 or less is good.
Hosting inside the EU simplifies your privacy policy and keeps latency low for German visitors. Serve fonts from your own server rather than Google's; a Munich court awarded damages in 2022 because a site passed a visitor's IP address to Google Fonts without consent.
The security baseline is short: a valid SSL certificate, software kept up to date, two step login for the admin area and backups stored away from the web server. Set up SPF and DKIM records so inquiries and offers sent from your domain land in the inbox. Compress images before upload; one oversized lab or warehouse photo can slow a whole page. Run your current site through our mobile friendly test to see where you stand before a redesign.
09Sector Examples From Magdeburg
Each sector asks a different first question, and copying one template across all of them is the most common waste. Four web design Magdeburg examples drawn from the city's profile:
Research spinoffs: a team coming out of the university or the Wissenschaftshafen needs to explain its technology in two sentences a buyer understands, then show the team, partners, publications and a contact path for industry. Our startup website page explains the structure in detail.
Logistics and warehousing: around the port in Rothensee and the junction of the A2 and A14, buyers check service area, fleet, storage space and certifications first. Keep the quote form to freight type, origin, destination and date; see the logistics company website page.
Campus services: housing agencies, language schools and practices need English service pages, opening hours readable on a phone, and booking that works without creating an account.
Hospitality along the Elbe: restaurants and guesthouses near the cathedral, the Green Citadel or the Elbauenpark need menus as HTML rather than PDF, allergen information, and hours that match the map listing.
For your own sector, finish this sentence: "Before contacting us, a client wants to see these three things." Those three things belong on the first screen.
10German Legal Basics Every Site Needs
In Germany the legal pages are part of the build, not an afterthought, and they apply to English language sites run by German businesses as well. We set up the technical side; have the texts checked by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: required for business sites under § 5 DDG, with name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register and VAT numbers; regulated professions add their chamber and professional rules.
- Privacy policy: a GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung whenever personal data is processed, which forms, maps and booking tools all do.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only run after the visitor consents.
- Processing agreements: a contract under Art. 28 GDPR with your host, email provider and booking tool.
- Online shops: an order button with clear wording such as "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" and withdrawal information for consumers.
Since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz covers many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
A quick self check: is the Impressum reachable in one click from every page, including English pages, and does the contact form explain in one line what the data is used for?
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
When you replace an existing site, the real risk is not the design but losing the URLs Google already knows. Without redirects, visibility built over years can drop within weeks.
- Inventory: export every old URL, together with the pages that earn traffic in Search Console.
- Mapping: assign each old URL to its closest new page; send orphans to the relevant category, not the homepage. Our redirect mapping tool speeds this up.
- Permanent redirects: 301 redirects go live on launch day, with no chains.
- Verification: test a sample of redirects after launch and fix any that return errors.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap and watch Search Console reports for four weeks.
Adding languages needs the same care. When English is added to a German only site, the German URLs should stay as they are and the new language should live in its own folder.
Timing matters too. A business serving students should avoid relaunching in the first weeks of the winter semester, and a firm exhibiting at a trade fair should not switch sites the week before. Archive a full copy of the old site before you take it down, and update links in your Business Profile, directory listings and email signatures.
12Common Mistakes on Magdeburg Business Sites
The same mistakes appear again and again on small and midsize business sites in the city, and most are cheap to fix.
- English only: a spinoff site in English alone misses German customers, authorities and local hires. Better: German core pages with an English version of equal quality.
- Copied Impressum: a template with missing or wrong details. Better: your own data, reviewed by a lawyer.
- Tracking before consent: the banner appears, but analytics already loads. Better: consent mode tied to the banner, verified in the browser's network tab.
- Machine translated German: wrong forms of address and odd phrasing undermine trust. Better: German copy written or edited by a native speaker.
- Research jargon on the homepage: buyers leave when the first screen reads like a paper abstract. Better: one plain sentence on the problem you solve, details further down.
- Phone number as an image: visitors on phones cannot tap to call. Better: a clickable number and, where it suits your clients, a messaging link.
Check your own site in five minutes: open it on your phone, decline cookies, tap the phone number and try to find the Impressum. Every place you get stuck is a task for the list.
13What Drives the Budget
Web design Magdeburg pricing works like our pricing everywhere else: it does not change by city, and a local business chooses from the same packages as any other client. Scope, not location, drives the budget.
The main cost drivers are these:
- Number of languages: each language means its own copy, review and upkeep.
- Depth of content: a separate page for each of twelve services is a different job from a five page company profile.
- Integrations: booking, quote calculators, CRM, accounting or warehouse software.
- Online shop: product count, variants, shipping rules and a checkout that follows German order rules.
- Copy and photography: whether you supply content or we write it.
Some things matter less than people expect: animation, the agency's postcode, or a site that merely "looks big". When comparing quotes, ask every agency to price the same page list and language plan; only then are offers comparable. Our fixed packages and what they include are on the web design pricing page.
Ask about maintenance from the start as well: who handles updates, backups and small content changes, and how often. A firm that arrives with organized content, a clean service list and good photos usually finishes the same scope faster and with fewer revision rounds.
14Your First 90 Days and Next Step
Launch day is when measurement starts, not when the work ends; the value of the web design Magdeburg businesses invest in shows in the decisions you make over the first three months.
- Weeks one and two: check Search Console for pages that are not indexed and send yourself a test message through every form.
- Month one: add fresh photos to your Business Profile and ask your first ten clients for a review.
- Month two: turn your two most frequent questions into their own pages or sections, for example "registering your address as a new student" for a relocation service.
- Month three: look at which language, district and page brought inquiries, and choose the next investment from that data.
If you also serve clients across the state border in Lower Saxony, our page for businesses in Braunschweig shows how search terms differ in a neighboring city of similar size. A site that serves both cities should give each one a section with real information, not a renamed copy.
Three questions settle most of the scope: whom you want to find you, in which language, and what the first contact should look like. When those answers are clear, your web design Magdeburg brief is mostly written. Tell us about your business in English or German through the contact form; after a short video call we send a written scope and quote.
