This guide is for international founders, research teams, engineering suppliers and expat run businesses in Braunschweig who are planning a new website or replacing an old one. It follows the order in which decisions come up in a real project: purpose, audience, partner, ownership, process, search, languages, speed, law, relaunch and budget.
Every section ends with something you can check yourself or ask an agency directly. Figures come only from official sources; everything else is practical advice for the kind of web design Braunschweig companies actually need, written by Talha Aslan and team.
01What a website has to do in Braunschweig's economy
In Braunschweig a website first has to prove competence to people who are trained to spot vague claims: engineers, scientists and purchasing teams. Destatis counted 252,962 residents on 31 December 2024, and the city, citing Eurostat for 2017, reports that 8.52 percent of regional GDP goes into research and development. That share shapes who reads your pages and how critically.
For an English speaking company here, the site usually serves two circles at once. International partners, funders and candidates read English; German customers, public bodies and banks expect German and a complete Impressum. Decide early which circle the site must win first, because that choice sets the navigation, the homepage and the measurement plan.
- Partner and investor contact: a spin off from TU Braunschweig needs a clear problem statement, the team and one obvious way to start a conversation.
- Supplier qualification: a testing or machining firm near the Research Airport needs capability pages a buyer can forward internally without a phone call.
- Recruiting: a lab or engineering office hiring abroad needs job pages that work on a phone and answer relocation questions.
- Walk in customers: a café or clinic serving international staff needs hours, location and booking in English and German.
Write the single most important task on one line before any design starts. If two people in your company write different lines, settle that first.
02Who searches for what in Braunschweig
Search behaviour in Braunschweig splits into neighbourhood searches, specialist searches and seasonal ones, and each needs a different kind of page. Typing web design Braunschweig into Google mostly shows agencies based in the city; your own customers, by contrast, often never type the city name at all.
- District and proximity: residents add the Stadtteil, as in "Kinderarzt Östliches Ringgebiet" or "Fahrradwerkstatt Westliches Ringgebiet", or simply "in der Nähe". Map results dominate, so address, opening hours and a tappable phone number matter more than long text.
- Specialist queries: buyers and engineers search by method, material or standard, for example "Kalibrierlabor DAkkS" or "Prüfstand Batteriemodule", frequently in German even when they work in English.
- Academic calendar: the winter semester at TU Braunschweig starts in October; searches for flats, furniture, removals, bike repair and English speaking doctors rise in the weeks before.
- Visitors: conference guests and business travellers search on their phones for restaurants around Burgplatz, the Altstadtmarkt and the Christmas market near the cathedral.
Run a quick test. Type your five main services on a phone three ways: with a district name, with "Braunschweig", and in English. Note what ranks on top for each: map pack, ads, directories, portals or company sites. That list tells you which pages to build and which battles to skip.
03Working with a partner outside Germany
When you shortlist providers for web design Braunschweig work, a team outside Germany can deliver your site well if the process is written down and visible at every step; distance is rarely the real risk, ambiguity is. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and projects in Germany run fully online. Türkiye is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two in winter, so most of the working day overlaps.
Ask every agency the same questions and request the answers in writing:
- Who runs the calls, in which language, and do you receive a written summary of decisions after each one?
- Does the scope list every page, language, feature and revision round, and name what is excluded?
- Can you open the work in progress on a password protected preview address whenever you like?
- Who writes or edits the German copy, and who checks technical terms in your field?
- After launch, who answers when something breaks, through which channel, and how fast?
Judge portfolios live, not as screenshots: open three sites on your own phone, submit a form, tap the phone number, switch the language. Our completed work is in Türkiye so far, listed with addresses on our references page; hold it to the same test.
04Ownership of domain, hosting, code and accounts
Everything your website depends on should be registered to your company before development starts. Otherwise switching providers later depends on the goodwill of the previous one, and during an outage nobody knows who holds the keys.
- Domain: register the .de address with a registrar you choose, in the exact company name that appears in your Impressum, with a role based e-mail address and auto renewal switched on.
- Hosting: pick a provider with data centres in the EU and make sure you have your own login to the customer area and to DNS, the system that connects your domain to the web server and mailboxes.
- Code and licences: the contract should transfer usage rights to the code and list licences for fonts, photos and plugins.
- Google accounts: your company owns Search Console, Analytics and the Business Profile; the agency gets user access only.
- Research assets: if the site shows publications, datasets or patent drawings, confirm who holds the rights, especially when a university or institute is involved.
For spin offs this point deserves extra care. A domain registered privately by a former doctoral student, or a site hosted on an institute server, becomes a problem the day that person leaves or the institute changes its rules. Move such assets into the company before the relaunch, not after.
05The project step by step, fully online
A Braunschweig project runs from first call to launch through screen sharing and written approvals; no stage depends on meeting in person. Each step ends with a document you approve or a page that works.
- Discovery: a 45 minute video call about audiences, languages, competitors and constraints from your institute or investors, summarised on one page.
- Scope and quote: the page list, languages, who provides the legal texts and delivery dates go into a written quote.
- Content plan: a sheet assigns each page a search query, a reader and the question it must answer.
- Design: the homepage and one key inner page, shown on a phone first, with feedback collected in writing.
- Build and review: the preview runs on a protected address; together we test forms, consent, both languages and the German copy.
- Launch and handover: we verify measurement on launch day and walk your team through the editor in a recorded session.
Every step is visible in our CRM, so a co founder travelling to a conference can see what is waiting for approval. We schedule calls around lab hours, lectures or shop opening times. If you happen to be in Istanbul, you are welcome at our Ataşehir office, but the project never requires it.
06Local search in Braunschweig: profile, districts, reviews
Local visibility starts with your Google Business Profile and your website stating exactly the same facts. The business name must be the real world name; adding keywords such as "English Speaking Dentist Braunschweig" to it breaks Google's guidelines and puts the profile at risk.
District names help only where they describe real service. A physiotherapy practice in Heidberg can explain that patients come from Melverode and Stöckheim; a set of near identical pages for every Stadtteil is what Google calls doorway pages and treats as spam. Customers from Wolfenbüttel, Peine, Gifhorn and Salzgitter fit into one honest service area section.
- Categories: choose the primary category by your core activity and keep secondary ones to services you really offer.
- German directories: Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and your industry's own registers should show the same name, address and phone number.
- Reviews: ask after every completed job with a short link; reply in the language the review was written in.
- Photos: real images of the entrance, the workshop or the lab, so first time visitors recognise the building.
Local search is one part of our SEO service, planned together with content. A useful first step costs nothing: check this week whether the opening hours on your profile and on your site are identical, including public holidays.
07Languages: German first, English and Turkish by audience
Even an English speaking team in Braunschweig usually needs German as the backbone of its website. Customers, authorities, banks and many industrial buyers read German, and legal pages such as the Impressum and the privacy policy are expected in German.
English earns its place when you work with international partners, apply for European funding, or hire researchers and engineers from abroad. The TU, the PTB, the DLR site and the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung all draw international staff, and so do the businesses serving them. A Turkish section pays off when part of your clientele, for example in insurance, real estate or car services, prefers to read Turkish.
- Publish each language on its own URL, for example a separate folder per language.
- Add reciprocal hreflang annotations: every version lists the others and itself.
- Label the language switcher with language names, not flags: Deutsch, English, Türkçe.
- Do not redirect automatically by browser language; let visitors choose and let Google crawl every version.
- Write each language for its reader; a translated German product page rarely answers what an international partner asks.
You can generate and check language annotations with our hreflang generator before you hand the site to a developer.
08Speed, EU hosting and security
Most people open your site on a phone, on the tram, between lab sessions or in a parking lot near the Hauptbahnhof, so speed is a design decision rather than an afterthought. Google measures three values at the 75th percentile of visits: LCP, how long the largest content takes to load, is good at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, how fast the page reacts to taps, at 200 milliseconds or less; CLS, how much the layout shifts, at 0.1 or less.
- Images: serve lab, product and team photos as WebP in sizes that match the screen, and lazy load everything below the first view.
- Fonts: host them on your own server. A Munich court awarded damages in January 2022 because Google Fonts were loaded from Google's servers without consent.
- Hosting location: an EU data centre keeps latency low for German visitors and simplifies data protection paperwork.
- Scripts: remove chat widgets, sliders and social embeds nobody uses; each one adds weight and an attack surface.
For security, confirm that the TLS certificate renews automatically, that editor logins use two factor authentication, and that daily backups are stored away from the web server. Restore a backup once a year as a drill. Protect forms against spam with a method that needs no tracking cookies, so the consent banner stays short.
09Sector examples from Braunschweig
Braunschweig's economy rests on research, vehicles and batteries, rail signalling, finance and retail, and each of these pulls the website's weight toward a different page. Here is where that weight usually lands.
- Research spin offs: a team leaving a TU institute needs a plain language explanation of the technology, the founders' research background, funding logos only where allowed, and one clear partner contact. The startup website page shows a fitting structure.
- Suppliers for automotive and rail: with Volkswagen developing battery systems in Braunschweig and Siemens Mobility focusing on rail signalling, suppliers need capability pages, test equipment lists, certificates and a quote form that accepts drawings. See the industrial company website page.
- Software for engineering teams: a small firm selling simulation or test automation tools needs product pages, documentation and a demo request rather than a classic brochure site.
- Services for international staff: doctors, tax advisers, relocation services and language schools need English pages with appointment paths that work on a phone.
Whatever your sector, identify the one page that will carry most visits and design from there. For a supplier that is usually the capability overview; for a spin off, the technology page that a potential partner opens after a conference.
10Legal basics for a website in Germany
A business website in Germany has fixed legal duties regardless of where its owners come from. The points below are a general overview, not legal advice; have your texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: § 5 DDG requires name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register and VAT numbers; regulated professions add their chamber, job title and professional rules.
- Privacy policy: as soon as personal data is processed, a GDPR (DSGVO) compliant privacy policy describing forms, maps, analytics and hosting.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only run after the visitor consents; in the EU, Google also requires consent mode for its measurement and ad features.
- Processors: hosts, booking tools and newsletter services need a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz covers many consumer facing shops and services; micro enterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and at most 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
Selling online adds the order button wording "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" under § 312j BGB and cancellation information for consumers. We set shops up along these lines through our e-commerce service; alcohol sales and promotion are outside what we build.
11Relaunching without losing rankings
If your current site already ranks for useful searches, the main risk of a relaunch is throwing that visibility away. Every URL that changes needs a permanent 301 redirect to its closest new equivalent, or Google loses the page's history and the value of links pointing to it.
- Export every old URL and mark the pages with the most clicks in Search Console over the last twelve months.
- Assign a new URL to each old one; send pages without an equivalent to the closest topic, never everything to the homepage.
- Carry over titles, descriptions and proven copy; think twice before cutting a service text that already brings enquiries.
- Keep the preview blocked from search engines and open the live site on launch day; remember that a page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex read.
- Check coverage and error reports in Search Console weekly for the first month.
Our redirect mapping tool helps pair old and new addresses. Also update the website link in your Business Profile, on directory listings, in e-mail signatures and on any institute or partner page that links to you. For spin offs, the university's own pages are often the strongest incoming link, so ask the institute to update it.
12Common mistakes on Braunschweig company sites
Anyone reviewing the web design Braunschweig companies have published will see the same handful of mistakes on small and mid sized sites, and most can be fixed in an afternoon. Each item below includes the better alternative.
- English only: German customers and authorities cannot find or trust you. Keep German as the backbone and run English as a full parallel version.
- Jargon without a summary: a page written for fellow researchers loses buyers and investors. Open each technical page with three plain sentences on what the product does and for whom.
- Tracking before consent: analytics firing on first load is a common and avoidable problem. Configure the consent tool so tags start only after agreement.
- Machine translated German: awkward German costs credibility with engineering and finance clients. Have a native speaker edit every German page.
- Outdated job ads: positions filled months ago make the company look inactive. Give each listing an end date and remove it when filled.
- Copied district pages: identical pages for Weststadt, Lehndorf and Querum add nothing. Write one strong service area section instead.
13What drives the budget
The scope decides the budget of a web design Braunschweig project, not the city; our prices are the same for every city and country. Clarifying these drivers before you request quotes makes offers comparable.
- Languages: German only, or English and Turkish too; each language multiplies writing, review and maintenance.
- Content: whether you supply texts or need them written; technical product and method pages take more effort than service pages.
- Features: quote forms with uploads, booking calendars, job portals, member areas or a shop widen the scope.
- Integrations: connections to a CRM, an applicant tracking system or an ERP need separate development.
- Visual material: lab or workshop photography by a local photographer is arranged and paid separately.
Our fixed packages and what they include are listed in the pricing section of our web design page. Multilingual builds and shops are quoted in writing. When you compare quotes, place the exclusions side by side, not only the totals, and ask how small changes after launch are billed.
Also plan the recurring costs from day one: domain, hosting, font licences and any maintenance agreement come back every year, and a spin off's budget plan should name who pays them once the founding grant ends.
14The first 90 days and your next step
The three months after launch show whether the site actually brings partners, candidates or customers; plan them as deliberately as the build. This schedule is simple enough for a small team to follow alone.
- Weeks one and two: submit the sitemap in Search Console and confirm that form submissions and phone taps are measured after consent.
- Month one: align your Business Profile with the site and ask your first ten customers or partners for a review.
- Month two: check which queries bring impressions and add a page or FAQ where you see a gap, for example a method your buyers ask about.
- Month three: group incoming enquiries by source and by page, and decide what to expand in the second quarter.
If you also serve clients in the state capital, our Hannover web design page covers what differs there.
To start, describe your company and your most important audience in a few sentences through our contact form. We will agree on languages and pages in a short video call and send a written scope and quote. Good web design Braunschweig partners and buyers respond to is clear, honest and fast, and that is what we plan with you.
