This guide is for companies in Halle (Saale) that sell to more than one kind of reader: life science spinoffs on the Weinberg Campus, suppliers to the chemical sites south of the city, logistics firms near the rail yard, and guesthouses or restaurants that welcome visiting academics and Handel Festival audiences. Good web design Halle projects settle the hard questions before a single page is drawn.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered those questions the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something to check, decide or ask a provider, so you can use it whether you work with us or not.
01The Jobs a Website Has in Halle's Economy
A website in Halle usually has to serve a research partner, a procurement team and a local customer at the same time, often in two languages. According to the Destatis municipal directory, Halle had 226,767 residents on 31 December 2024, which puts it close to Magdeburg as one of the two largest cities in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt.
What sets the city apart is its knowledge base. The Weinberg Campus is the largest science and technology park in Central Germany, home to more than 100 companies and around 6,000 scientists and staff. Martin Luther University teaches around 19,000 students, about nine percent of them international, and the Leopoldina, Germany's National Academy of Sciences, has been based in Halle since 1878.
Before any design work, write down which of these jobs comes first for your company:
- Explain a technology: a method, a platform or a lab service, told so that a buyer without your PhD can follow it.
- Win business clients: certificates, capacities and named contacts that a purchasing department can verify without a call.
- Recruit: a careers area that shows international hires what working and living in Halle looks like.
- Serve visitors: opening hours, menus, rooms and directions for people who are in town for a few days.
The job you rank first decides the menu, the first screen on a phone and what you measure later. Most failed sites tried to give all four equal weight.
02Who Searches in Halle, and What They Type
Search behavior in Halle splits clearly by audience, and your page structure should mirror that split. Residents search in German and often add a district; international researchers and partners search in English and add a method or a product.
Typical patterns look like this:
- Residents: "Physiotherapie Paulusviertel", "Zahnarzt Kröllwitz", "Kfz Werkstatt Trotha", usually on a phone and often with "in der Nähe".
- Researchers and new hires: English queries about flats, childcare, doctors who speak English and services near the campus.
- Business buyers: German or English queries for a contract service, a lab method or a supplier with a specific certification.
- Festival and conference visitors: short English searches for restaurants, cafés and rooms around the old town, concentrated in June.
Halle and Leipzig sit close enough that many people commute between them, and some buyers search both city names. If you serve both, say so once in a service area sentence rather than building separate pages for each city.
A practical step: list the ten questions your sales team or front desk hears most, note which language each comes in, and turn every recurring question into either a page or a section of one. That list becomes the backbone of your sitemap.
03Choosing a Partner Outside Germany, Done Properly
A remote partner works well when everything that matters is written down and visible. Distance is not the risk; unclear scope, slow feedback and missing ownership are.
Ask any provider, including us, these questions before you sign:
- Scope: Which pages, which languages and how many review rounds are included?
- Copy: Who writes the German text, who writes the English text, and is one simply translated from the other?
- Preview: Will you review a live staging site on your own phone before launch?
- Time zones: Istanbul is one hour ahead of Halle in summer and two in winter; are calls planned within your working day?
- Legal texts: Who supplies the Impressum and privacy policy, and who checks them?
For a science company, add one more question: who will read the technical pages for accuracy? A designer can make a method page clear, but a scientist on your side should sign off every claim about what the technology does.
We track each project in a CRM where you can see which tasks are waiting on us and which on you. Calls run in English or German, and every decision from a call ends up in writing the same day.
04Ownership: Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Every account connected to your website should be registered in your company's name from day one. That is the only way to change providers later without asking anyone for permission.
A .de domain is registered through a registrar that works with DENIC, the German registry, and the holder field must show your company. You can check who holds a domain today and when it renews with our WHOIS lookup tool.
At handover you should receive:
- Login details for the domain registrar, with two factor authentication tied to a company phone.
- Administrative access to the EU hosting account and the billing contact.
- The source code or an administrator account in the content management system.
- Owner rights for Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics, with the agency added only as a manager.
- A list of fonts, images and plugins with their license terms.
Spinoffs should pay particular attention here. When a company leaves a university incubator, domains and mailboxes are sometimes still registered to a founder's personal account or to the institute; moving them into the company before the relaunch avoids a messy transfer during due diligence.
Keep this list in the written offer. An offer that says "we keep the hosting so you don't have to worry" sounds convenient, but it ties your site to one firm.
05The Project Step by Step, Run Remotely
A Halle project runs entirely on video calls; our team works from Istanbul, and if you ever travel there we are happy to meet at our Ataşehir office, though no step requires it.
- Discovery call: we hear about your offer, your buyers and your competitors and agree on the main job and the language order.
- Written scope: page list, languages, responsibility for legal texts and a timeline in one document.
- Content collection: photos, product or method descriptions, team bios and publications in a shared folder.
- Design draft: phone layout first, then desktop, approved on a call.
- Build and staging: the site goes live on a test address so you and your colleagues can review it on your own devices.
- Launch and training: domain switch, consent based measurement, and a short session on updating news, jobs and publications yourself.
Each stage closes with a written sign off. That keeps discussions focused on what the document says rather than what someone remembers.
The slowest part of a web design Halle project is rarely design or code; it is internal approval. If your board, a university tech transfer office or a funding body must see the text, build their review into the timeline from the start.
06Local Search in Halle: Profile, Districts and Directories
For local customers, your Google Business Profile and your website must tell the same story. The business name must match your real world name; Google's guidelines do not allow added keywords such as "Physio Halle Top".
A short checklist for Halle:
- Category: choose one precise primary category instead of a broad one.
- Service area: name the districts and Saalekreis towns you really serve, for example Giebichenstein, Südstadt, Merseburg or Kabelsketal.
- Directories: keep name, address and phone identical in Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and 11880.
- Reviews: reply to each review in the language it was written in, briefly and personally.
- Photos: show the entrance and signage so a first time visitor recognizes the door.
In web design Halle projects for local service firms, district names belong in real content: the service area sentence, a case description or directions. Avoid the old trick of one page per district with only the name swapped. Google calls these doorway pages and treats them as low value; a single service area section plus a few pages with genuinely different content works better.
B2B firms on the Weinberg Campus rarely need a map listing to win clients, but they still benefit from one: partners use it to find the building, and a complete profile with correct opening hours looks more credible. If you want local search, content and technical work handled as one plan, see our SEO services.
07Languages: German First, English Where It Earns Its Place
In Halle, German is the base language and English is added for specific readers; for many science firms English becomes equal or even primary. Authorities, banks and most local customers read German, and the Impressum belongs in German in any case.
English pays off when you can name the reader. A biotech spinoff selling to partners in the Netherlands or the United States, an institute recruiting postdocs, or a guesthouse hosting festival guests from Japan or England all have a clear English audience. Turkish can make sense for service firms whose customers include Turkish speaking families.
Each language version should live at its own address and point to the others with hreflang, an annotation that tells Google which page is in which language. Every version must reference the others and itself. The setup is explained on our multilingual website page.
- Do: separate folders per language and a visible language switch on every page.
- Do: write English technical pages natively, using the terms your international partners search for.
- Avoid: automatic redirects based on browser language, which block both users and Google from choosing a version.
- Avoid: machine translated pages that nobody on your team has read.
When web design Halle projects add English late, the menu and URLs often have to be rebuilt; deciding the language order at the start avoids that.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Your site should load fast on a phone, because most first visits happen there, including from researchers checking you between meetings. Google's Core Web Vitals give a clear target at the 75th percentile: LCP, the time until the largest content appears, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, the delay before the page responds to a tap, at 200 milliseconds or less; CLS, how much the layout shifts, at 0.1 or less.
- Images: lab photos and product shots in WebP, resized for each screen width.
- Fonts: host them on your own server; a Munich court in 2022 awarded damages over Google Fonts loaded from Google's servers without consent.
- Hosting: a data center inside the EU, ideally in Germany, which simplifies data protection answers in tenders.
- Security: SSL, prompt updates, daily or weekly backups and two factor login for every administrator.
Science and supplier sites often grow heavy with PDFs, datasheets and embedded videos. Link large files instead of embedding them on the first screen, and load video only after a click.
You can run a quick first check with our mobile friendly test, then confirm with the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console, which reflects real visitors rather than a single lab test.
09Sector Examples Shaped by Halle
Each type of business in Halle needs a site built around the first question its buyer asks. Some concrete patterns:
- Life science spinoffs: a technology page a non specialist can follow, a team section with credentials, publications, and a partner or investor enquiry form; see the startup website page for the structure.
- Suppliers to the chemical industry: certifications, safety documentation and a named contact for each product line, with German and English kept in step.
- Forwarders and warehouses: service areas, vehicle and storage capacity, rail connections and a quote form that asks the right questions; details on the logistics company website page.
- Relocation and expat services: housing, registration help and English speaking contacts, written for someone who arrived last week.
- Hospitality: rooms, menus and directions readable on a phone, with festival week notes published well before June.
Doctors, lawyers and tax advisers serving international clients follow their German professional rules, which favor factual information over promotion. Their sites name the chamber and professional title in the Impressum and describe services plainly.
Whatever the sector, two things stay constant: a clear statement of where you work or deliver, and a contact path that takes one tap on a phone.
10Legal Basics for a Website in Germany
German legal requirements belong in the design from the first draft; retrofitting them usually breaks layouts and tracking. The rules apply equally to international companies with a German entity.
- Impressum: under § 5 DDG, name, address, contact details and register entries; regulated professions add chamber, legal job title and professional rules. It must be easy to reach from every page.
- Privacy policy: a GDPR (DSGVO) compliant statement naming each tool that processes personal data, from forms to maps.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may run only after the visitor agrees.
- Processors: booking tools, newsletter services and hosting need a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the BFSG covers many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises offering services are exempt, so check whether it applies to you.
If you sell online to consumers, the order button must make the payment obligation explicit, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and customers need clear withdrawal information.
We set up the technical side. For the wording of your legal texts, we recommend a review by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt), especially for regulated professions or anything involving health data.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
A new site must inherit the addresses the old one earned in Google, and 301 redirects are how it does that. A product page or a publication list that has drawn visitors for years can lose that traffic overnight if its URL changes without a redirect.
- Export every URL of the old site and mark the pages with the most clicks in the Search Console performance report.
- Map each old URL to its new counterpart; where none exists, choose the closest topic rather than the home page.
- Build and test the map on staging with our redirect mapping tool.
- Switch on the redirects at launch and submit the new XML sitemap in Search Console.
- Check 404 errors and clicks weekly for the first four weeks.
Keep the staging site out of the index with noindex, not with robots.txt: a page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex read by Google. Put "remove noindex" on the launch day checklist.
For science companies, one more item matters: external links. Papers, press releases and partner sites often point to old URLs, and those links carry weight. Redirect them carefully and, where possible, ask key partners to update the link.
12Common Mistakes on Halle Company Websites
Most weak sites in Halle suffer from missing decisions, not missing design talent. Six mistakes come up repeatedly, each with a better alternative:
- Jargon on the first screen: a method name nobody outside the lab understands; open instead with the problem you solve and who it is for.
- English as an afterthought: a single translated home page while every other link leads to German; plan full English paths for the pages partners actually need.
- Tracking before consent: analytics and ad tags load before the banner is answered; use consent mode and conditional loading instead.
- Outdated news and job pages: a vacancy from two years ago undermines trust; assign an owner and a review date for every time sensitive section.
- PDF only information: datasheets and menus available only as downloads; put the essentials in HTML and link the PDF as a supplement.
- District name stuffing: long lists of districts in the footer; name your real service area in one sentence.
A useful self test: open your site on a phone, hand it to someone outside your field, and ask them to explain in one sentence what you do and how to contact you. If they cannot, the problem is structure, not color or typography.
13What Drives the Budget
Scope drives the budget, not the city; a company in Halle works with the same packages as our clients elsewhere. The decisions that move the effort most are these:
- Languages: each extra language means separate copy, review and hreflang setup, not just translation.
- Depth of technical content: a five page profile and a site with a page per method, product line and application are very different jobs.
- Functions: booking, ordering, partner portals or job applications add development and testing.
- Content production: whether you supply texts and photos, or we write copy and organize a shoot.
- Integrations: CRM, applicant tracking or ERP connections.
The simplest way to stay in control is to launch with what is essential and add the rest based on data. A spinoff might launch with German and English core pages and a contact form, then add a publications database once the first partner conversations show what they look for.
When comparing web design Halle offers, make sure the same scope is priced. One offer may include legal page setup, consent and measurement; another may bill them separately. Ask for one time costs and yearly costs for hosting, maintenance and licenses as separate lines.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The three months after launch show whether the site does its job, so spend them measuring and refining rather than adding features.
- Weeks one and two: check indexing and 404 errors in Search Console; compare profile, site and directory details one final time.
- First month: track calls, enquiries and form submissions by page and language, with consent based measurement.
- Second month: ask new clients for reviews; add answers to the three most frequent questions to the relevant pages.
- Third month: review which languages and audiences actually convert, and decide on the next addition, such as a publications area or a booking tool.
Start by looking at the fixed packages and what they include in our web design pricing section; multilingual structures and online shops are quoted in writing after a call.
To discuss your web design Halle project, send a short note through our contact form: what your company does, who your main readers are and which languages you need. We will propose a video call, then send a written scope and quote.
