In short

Web design in Düsseldorf usually means English and German from the start, a clear B2B story and German legal pages such as the Impressum and cookie consent. According to Destatis, 618,685 people lived in Düsseldorf at the end of 2024, and the city is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and a global trade fair venue. Talha Aslan and team work with Düsseldorf companies fully online, with a written scope and progress tracked in our CRM.

Düsseldorf's business profile

What should a website do for a company in Düsseldorf?

Düsseldorf had 618,685 residents at the end of 2024 (Destatis) and produced about 63.3 billion euros of GDP in 2023 according to IT.NRW, the state statistics office. Four strengths of North Rhine-Westphalia's capital shape what a website here needs to do.

GDP per person in work, 2023 (euros)IT.NRW, GDP of independent cities 2023
  • Düsseldorf109,735
  • Cologne97,808
  • Duisburg87,140

A productive service economy

Around 87% of Düsseldorf's gross value added in 2023 came from services, and GDP per person in work reached 109,735 euros, ahead of Cologne. Buyers of consulting, finance or legal services judge expertise from the website first, so clear service pages and a visible team matter.

World leading trade fairs

Messe Düsseldorf held 22 trade fairs in the city in 2024, with 24,637 exhibitors and 1,044,650 visitors; 76.5% of exhibitors came from abroad. drupa, MEDICA and wire are among them. Exhibitors need English landing pages, and hotels, restaurants and service firms see demand rise in fair weeks.

Japan's base in continental Europe

The city's economic development office counts around 410 Japanese companies in Düsseldorf and describes the region as the largest Japanese business location in continental Europe. Suppliers and service providers working for international head offices need a professional English version to make the shortlist.

Connected through its airport

Düsseldorf Airport closed 2025 with 21 million passengers. Business travellers look up hotels, meeting venues, car hire and local services on their phones, so pages that load fast, offer an English summary and allow one tap calls make the difference.

How we work

Our team is in Istanbul; your Düsseldorf project runs online

We have no office, representative or staff in Germany; Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul. With Düsseldorf companies, discovery, design sign off and launch take place over video calls in English or German. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Düsseldorf in summer and two hours in winter, so our working days overlap almost entirely.

We start by writing down who the site has to convince: German clients in the Rhine region, a head office abroad, trade fair visitors or future hires, and which language each of them reads. Language versions, who supplies the legal texts and the timeline are part of the written scope; if you pass through Istanbul, we are glad to meet there as well.

Process

From brief to launch in four steps

  1. Discovery and scope

We define your business, your audience and the site’s one-sentence job: who it sells what to, through which action. Scope and timeline are written from that answer.

  2. Design approval

The home page and key templates come to you as designs first; no code is written before your approval. We do not like surprises, and we do not cause them.

  3. Development

The approved design becomes fast, secure, maintainable code. You follow progress in the CRM and see every page in a staging environment before launch.

  4. Launch and measurement

The site goes live with analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking connected; panel training is given, first-year hosting and maintenance included.

In-depth guide

Web design Düsseldorf: a planning guide for international firms

Talha Aslan and teamLast updated: 15 min read

This guide is for international subsidiaries, expat founders, trade fair exhibitors and service firms that need a website for the Düsseldorf market, whether they are launching a German entity or replacing a site that no longer fits. A web design Düsseldorf project involves decisions most global templates skip: German legal pages, a language strategy that serves German clients and a head office abroad, and a plan for the weeks when the trade fair halls fill up.

We, Talha Aslan and team, ordered those decisions the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends in something you can do this week: a checklist, a question for any agency, or a concrete step. Legal notes are general information, not legal advice; have your texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).

What Düsseldorf's economy asks of a business website

In Düsseldorf, a business website has to prove expertise quickly to buyers who are used to high standards and short meetings. According to the state statistics office IT.NRW, the city generated about 63.3 billion euros of GDP in 2023, and roughly 87 percent of gross value added came from service sectors. GDP per person employed reached 109,735 euros, ahead of Cologne at 97,808 and Duisburg at 87,140.

The capital of North Rhine Westphalia had 618,685 residents at the end of 2024 (Destatis), yet its business reach is far wider. For an international firm, the site usually carries four jobs:

  • Win German clients: a German version that explains your offer, your service area and how to start, without reading like a translated brochure.
  • Reassure the head office: an English version that partners, investors and colleagues abroad can review without asking for a summary.
  • Pass procurement checks: named contacts, a complete Impressum, certifications and a clear company history that a purchasing department can verify.
  • Recruit locally: a careers page that German speaking candidates and international hires both understand on a phone.

Rank these four jobs before you brief anyone. The order decides which language is the default, what sits on the homepage and which form fields you actually need.

Who searches for what in Düsseldorf

Search in Düsseldorf splits into German local searches, English expat searches and international business searches, and each group phrases things differently. A German client types "Steuerberater Golzheim" or "IT Dienstleister Düsseldorf"; an expat types "English speaking dentist Düsseldorf" or "relocation service Oberkassel"; a buyer abroad searches for a product category plus "Germany" and lands on whichever supplier explains itself clearly in English.

Several moments in the city's calendar shift demand noticeably:

  • Fair weeks at Messe Düsseldorf: In 2024 the fair company held 22 events in the city with 24,637 exhibitors and 1,044,650 visitors; 76.5 percent of exhibitors came from abroad. During MEDICA, wire or boot, searches for hotels, interpreters, stand services and meeting rooms rise.
  • Relocations: Assignees often arrive around the start of the school year, and their searches cover international schools, apartments, doctors and tax advice.
  • Year end: Corporate events, client gifts and catering near the Königsallee and the Media Harbour.
  • Airport traffic: Düsseldorf Airport closed 2025 with 21 million passengers, many of them business travelers searching on a phone.

Try this: search your five core services in German and in English on a phone, signed out, and note what appears first. Map results suggest your Business Profile matters most; directories suggest you need stronger service pages; ads at the top tell you how crowded the term is.

Working with a team outside Germany, done properly

A remote web partner works when every decision is written down and you can see progress yourself at any time. Many international firms in Düsseldorf already run projects across borders, so the question is not distance but discipline. Ask for a written summary after each video call and a preview link you can open on your own phone at every stage.

Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours ahead in winter, so calls fit normal office hours on both sides. When you compare proposals for web design Düsseldorf, put the same questions to every provider:

  • German copy: Who writes it, and does a native German speaker proofread every page before launch?
  • Legal pages: Who supplies the Impressum and privacy policy text, and how is cookie consent set up technically?
  • Approvals: How many design rounds are included, and where are change requests recorded?
  • After launch: Who handles updates, backups and small edits, through which channel and with what response time?

Also clarify who signs off on your side. In subsidiaries, the local managing director, the marketing team abroad and sometimes the legal department all have a say; naming one decision maker with a deputy prevents a design from circling between time zones for weeks. If a proposal leaves these points vague, expect the vagueness to come back as extra cost later.

Ownership of domain, hosting, code and accounts

Every part of the website should be registered to your company, with the agency added only as an authorized user. For a German subsidiary, the .de domain is registered in the name of the GmbH through a registrar account the company controls; billing and login details stay with you. If the group already owns the brand domain, decide early whether Germany gets a .de domain or a folder on the global .com, because that choice shapes hreflang and analytics.

At handover, request the following in writing:

  1. Registrar access and instructions for retrieving the transfer code.
  2. A hosting account in an EU data center, with admin access to the control panel.
  3. A current copy of all site files and the database.
  4. Owner rights on Google Business Profile, Search Console and your analytics property.
  5. A list of DNS records, including those for company e-mail and any verification entries.

Booking tools, newsletter software and payment providers should also be opened under the company. When an employee or agency leaves, you remove access instead of rebuilding anything. Store credentials in a shared password manager and switch on two factor authentication for every account that supports it. Groups with central IT should check whether a single sign on policy applies before accounts are created.

The project step by step, fully online

A Düsseldorf project with our team runs in eight steps, driven by video calls and written approvals. We work from Istanbul and run projects in Germany fully online; if you happen to travel to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our Ataşehir office, though it is never required.

  1. Discovery call: Your services, target clients, service area, competitors and the role of the head office.
  2. Written scope: Page list, languages, responsibility for legal texts and a timeline in one document.
  3. Content plan: Which page answers which search, and which texts you supply.
  4. Design draft: Homepage and one service page, presented in the phone view first.
  5. Development: The approved design is built on a password protected preview server.
  6. Language review: German and English pages are read separately and terminology is aligned.
  7. Launch: Domain connected, consent banner and forms tested on the live site.
  8. Training and handover: A short call on editing content, then all access is transferred.

You follow progress in our CRM, where every approval is logged with its date. Plan your own contributions as well: team photos, company data for the Impressum, certificates and references. When delays happen, they usually sit in waiting for content, not in design.

Local search in Düsseldorf: Business Profile and districts

For web design Düsseldorf work that should bring local enquiries, visibility depends above all on a Google Business Profile whose details match your website exactly. The business name must be your real world name with no added keywords, so "Smith Relocation Düsseldorf Cheap Moving" breaks Google's guidelines. If you serve clients at their premises and receive no visitors, you can hide the address and define a service area instead.

A checklist for profile and site:

  • Category: one precise primary category that matches what you actually sell.
  • Districts: name the areas you really serve on service pages, for example Stadtmitte, Derendorf, Kaiserswerth or Unterbilk.
  • German directories: Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and 11880 should show the same name, address and phone format.
  • Reviews: ask after each completed job via a short link or QR code, and answer every review in the language it was written in.
  • Photos: real images of your office, team and work instead of stock pictures.

Creating near identical pages for every district or surrounding town is what Google calls doorway pages, and they rarely help. One strong service area section that mentions clients from Neuss, Meerbusch or Ratingen does more. For a sustained program on top of this, our SEO service builds content and technical work around these foundations.

German, English and more: choosing languages

German comes first for any firm selling to German clients; English is essential when your buyers, colleagues or candidates are international, and Düsseldorf has many of those. The city's economic development office counts about 410 Japanese companies, and the region is considered the largest Japanese business center in continental Europe. Most of those teams work in English and German with local partners, so a Japanese version is worth considering only if your buyers explicitly ask for it.

When a second or third language pays off:

  • Selling to subsidiaries: procurement teams often share your site with colleagues abroad who read English.
  • Expat services: doctors, tax advisers and relocation firms serving the international community.
  • Turkish: firms whose clients include Düsseldorf's Turkish speaking community, for example in insurance, legal or travel services.

Each language needs its own URL, typically a folder per language, and hreflang annotations linking them. Every version must reference the others and itself; without reciprocal annotations Google may ignore them. You can generate the tags with our hreflang generator and see the full setup on the multilingual website page. Avoid automatic translation plugins for client facing text; a German reader notices within one sentence.

Speed, hosting and security

In web design Düsseldorf projects, speed is a design decision, because many visitors open your site on a phone between meetings, on the tram or at the airport. Google's Core Web Vitals define "good" at the 75th percentile as follows: LCP, the time until the largest content element loads, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, how quickly the page responds to interaction, at 200 milliseconds or less; CLS, how much the layout shifts while loading, at 0.1 or less.

A technical checklist:

  • EU hosting: a data center in the EU, ideally in Germany, which also simplifies data protection documentation.
  • Local fonts: serve web fonts from your own server instead of loading them from Google's servers.
  • Images: WebP files resized for each screen width, especially for fair photos and team portraits.
  • Updates: keep the CMS and plugins current and remove anything you no longer use.
  • Backups: automatic daily backups and a restore test once a month.

Subsidiaries often face an extra check from group IT: security headers, TLS configuration and a list of external scripts. Prepare that list early, because every external script also needs to appear in your consent setup and privacy policy. Limit admin accounts to named people, and close accounts the day someone leaves.

Sector examples for Düsseldorf businesses

What a Düsseldorf website needs depends on how the sector meets its clients, so start from the client journey rather than a template. These examples show typical structures:

  • Trade fair exhibitors: a fair landing page in English and German with hall and stand number, a meeting request form and a named contact for follow up after the event.
  • Subsidiaries of foreign groups: a German site that explains the local entity, its services and its people, linked to the global brand site without copying it.
  • Advisory and legal firms: separate pages per practice area, profiles with qualifications and an intake process for international clients.
  • Medical practices serving expats: English patient information, online booking and an Impressum listing the chamber and professional title.
  • Fashion and showroom businesses: collection pages, appointment requests for buyers and clear trade terms in both languages.
  • Logistics and import firms: service pages per mode of transport, certificates and a quote form that asks the right questions.

For each page, write one sentence describing the single action a visitor should take there. In regulated professions such as medicine and law, use factual language and check your professional body's rules on advertising before design starts.

Legal basics for German websites

In Germany, legal pages are a precondition for launch rather than an afterthought. Business websites need an Impressum under § 5 DDG, the German Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG) that replaced the TMG in May 2024; it lists the company name, address, contact details, register entry and VAT number, and for regulated professions the chamber, the legal job title and the applicable professional rules.

Before launch, check these points:

  1. Privacy policy: a Datenschutzerklärung under the GDPR (DSGVO) that explains forms, maps, analytics and every external service.
  2. Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only run after the visitor consents.
  3. Processing agreements: service providers such as hosting or booking tools need a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
  4. Accessibility: the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing online shops and services; check whether it applies to you.
  5. Online sales: the order button must state clearly that the order is payable, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need withdrawal information.

Fonts loaded from Google's servers without consent led to a damages ruling by the Munich Regional Court in January 2022, which is one more reason to host fonts locally. We handle the technical setup; the wording of legal texts should be reviewed by a lawyer. Group legal teams abroad are often unfamiliar with the Impressum, so share this list with them early.

Relaunching without losing rankings

If your current site already ranks for some searches, a relaunch starts by recording which pages bring traffic before anything changes. When URLs change, each old page needs a permanent 301 redirect to its closest new equivalent; redirecting everything to the homepage throws away most of what the old site earned.

  1. Export the top pages and queries of the last twelve months from Search Console.
  2. Crawl the old site and list every URL, including PDFs and images that attract traffic.
  3. Map each old URL to its new counterpart in a spreadsheet.
  4. Test all redirects right after launch and submit the new XML sitemap.
  5. Check coverage and 404 reports in Search Console weekly for the first month.

Our redirect mapping tool speeds up the matching step. Subsidiaries moving from a standalone domain into a folder on the group domain should treat that as a relaunch too, with the same mapping discipline. Keep the staging site password protected; a preview that gets indexed creates duplicate content that takes weeks to clean up. Small fluctuations in the first weeks are normal; if a drop persists, check redirects and indexing before touching content.

Common mistakes on Düsseldorf business sites

Most problems on international business sites in Düsseldorf come from missing local details and a muddled language setup, not from visual design. Six mistakes to check today, each with a better alternative:

  • English only: a site that ignores German clients and authorities; instead, a German default with an English version linked through hreflang.
  • Group legal pages reused: a global privacy policy with no German Impressum; instead, a German entity Impressum and a privacy policy that covers local tools.
  • Tracking before consent: analytics and ad tags firing on page load; instead, a consent tool that blocks them until the visitor agrees.
  • Fair pages published late: stand details going live the week the fair opens; instead, a landing page online several weeks ahead with a meeting form.
  • Anonymous contact: a generic info address and no names; instead, named contacts with roles and a direct phone number.
  • Machine translated German: copy that reads awkwardly to native speakers; instead, text written or edited by a native German writer.

Mark each point against your current site. If three or more apply, a structured relaunch is usually cleaner than fixing pieces one by one.

What drives the budget

The budget for a web design Düsseldorf project depends on scope, not on the city; our prices are the same wherever the client is based. When you compare proposals, check that each of these drivers is written down explicitly:

  • Number of languages: German only, or English and other versions, each with its own copy and review.
  • Pages and content: how many service pages, and who writes them.
  • Functionality: booking, quote calculators, client portals or job application flows.
  • Online sales: number of products, payment methods and a checkout that follows German rules.
  • Integrations: CRM, ERP or group systems the site must connect to; our custom software team handles deeper integrations.
  • Maintenance: how long updates and support are included after launch.

Launching the essentials first and adding a second language or a booking system later keeps costs predictable, as long as URL structure and navigation are prepared for the second phase from day one. Our live work is currently all in Turkey, and you can review the structures on our references page.

To make proposals comparable, send every provider the same one page brief: services, target clients, languages, current domain, and two or three sites you like.

The first 90 days and your next step

The first three months after launch show whether the site actually brings enquiries in Düsseldorf and where to adjust. A simple plan keeps the site from being left alone after go live:

  • Month one: verify Search Console and Business Profile connections, and record which page each enquiry comes from.
  • Month two: rewrite titles and descriptions of pages with many impressions but few clicks, and ask recent clients for reviews.
  • Month three: prepare content for the next fair or season and align the German and English versions.

Keep measurement modest: enquiries per month, the language and district they come from, and whether they turn into clients. Remember that analytics only counts visitors who consented.

Three questions help you decide: does the site tell a German client on the first screen what you do, are the legal pages complete, and can an international contact find everything in English? If any answer is no, it is a good moment to start a web design Düsseldorf project. You can review package scope on our pricing page and describe your project through the contact form; after a short video call we send languages, pages and timeline in writing.
