These pages are meant for international companies, suppliers selling into the OstWestfalenLippe machine building cluster, university spinoffs, clinics and expat run businesses preparing a website for Bielefeld. A web design Bielefeld project asks for more than a layout: you settle which languages serve which readers, which German legal pages are mandatory, how you show up when someone searches by district, and which accounts stay in your hands once the site is live.
Talha Aslan and team have arranged those choices in the order you will meet them. Every section ends in something you can act on: a criterion, a step or a question for any agency on your shortlist. Notes on law are general information rather than advice, so let a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) review your final texts.
01The job a website does in Bielefeld's economy
In Bielefeld, a company website has to win over two audiences at once: German speaking customers and purchasers who vet you in their own language, and international partners, staff and students who expect English. The city is the economic center of eastern Westphalia. IT.NRW, the statistics office of North Rhine Westphalia, puts Bielefeld's 2023 GDP at 17.9 billion euros, against 21.5 billion for Münster and 6.6 billion for Hamm.
WEGE, the municipal business development agency, counted 168,581 jobs subject to social insurance on 30 June 2025, and 77,471 people travel into the city for work every working day. For your site, that means:
- Readers from the whole region: many visitors live in Kreis Gütersloh, Herford or Lippe, so spell out the area you cover instead of leaving it implied.
- Vetting by business partners: purchasing teams, banks and landlords read the Impressum, references and named contacts before answering an inquiry.
- Competition for staff: in a labor market of this size, a careers page with real working conditions has to hold its own against large local employers.
Before any design draft, write one sentence per audience that names the single action you want from them, such as "send a drawing for a quote" or "book a first appointment". Those sentences then decide navigation, page order and form fields.
02Search intent in Bielefeld: districts, buyers and the academic year
Most local searches in Bielefeld are typed in German on a phone, and many include one of the city's ten Stadtbezirke: Mitte, Schildesche, Gadderbaum, Brackwede, Dornberg, Jöllenbeck, Heepen, Stieghorst, Sennestadt or Senne. English queries come from a smaller but very focused group of international staff, researchers and students.
- District queries: "Zahnarzt Dornberg", "Physiotherapie Stieghorst" or "Steuerberater Gadderbaum" bring up map results first, so your Business Profile and service pages must tell the same story.
- English queries: "English speaking doctor Bielefeld" or "international kindergarten Bielefeld" are rare but close to a decision, and one focused English page answers them.
- Industrial buyers: procurement staff search by process and material, for example "Blechbearbeitung Ostwestfalen" or "Lohnfertigung Zerspanung", often leaving out the city.
- Semester rhythm: housing, language courses, bikes, furniture and part time jobs pick up at the start of every semester at Bielefeld University and Hochschule Bielefeld.
With an existing site, open the Search Console performance report, filter for Germany and export the twenty queries with the most impressions. Queries that carry a district or a technical term point to the pages that deserve more depth.
03Hiring a team based outside Germany without losing control
A team based abroad works well for a Bielefeld company when every agreement is recorded in writing and you can inspect progress whenever you like. Ask for a short written recap after every video call and for a staging link that opens on your own phone, not screenshots in an e-mail.
Türkiye runs one hour ahead of German time in summer and two hours in winter, so most of your working day overlaps with ours. When you weigh offers for web design Bielefeld projects, put the same questions to every agency:
- German copy: who drafts the German pages, and does a native German speaker edit each one before launch?
- English copy: is the English version written for its own reader, or machine translated from the German draft?
- Compliance pages: who sets up the Impressum, privacy policy and consent banner, and with which consent tool?
- Live references: can you open three current sites by the agency and try the forms, loading speed and click to call on your own?
- Ownership: which accounts, files and licenses are yours on handover?
Look through what our web design service covers before the first call and bring your own requirement list. A written page list with languages and deliverables settles in advance most arguments about what the scope did or did not include.
04Who owns what: domain, server, source files and logins
Each core asset of the website belongs in your company's name, and the agency should hold nothing more than delegated access. DENIC runs the central registry for .de names, but registration goes through a provider; log into that provider's dashboard and confirm your company, not the agency or a former employee, is the registered holder.
International firms opening a German subsidiary should also settle which legal entity holds the domain: the parent company or the GmbH named in the Impressum. Request each item below in writing when the project closes:
- Domain: the registrar login and the AuthInfo code required to move the name to another provider.
- Server: hosting inside the European Union, plus a contract with the host for processing personal data on your behalf (Art. 28 GDPR, called DSGVO in German).
- Source files: the full site files, a database export and, for custom software, the source code with written usage rights.
- Google tools: Business Profile, Search Console and analytics created under your own Google login, with the agency added as a user.
- E-mail and DNS: admin rights to the mailboxes and DNS records attached to your domain.
For university spinoffs, agree early whether the domain and any code belong to the founders, the new company or a research project, and note the answer in the kickoff minutes.
05The project in six stages, all done remotely
Every stage of a Bielefeld project happens online and closes with your written sign off. Talha Aslan and team are based in Istanbul, with no office, representative or employees anywhere in Germany. Should your travels bring you to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our Ataşehir office; the project itself never depends on that visit. The usual order of work:
- Kickoff: over video, in English or German, we go through audiences, services or products, service area, languages and hiring plans.
- Scope document: pages, language versions, forms, integrations and the material you supply are listed item by item in the proposal.
- Material handover: photos, certificates, team bios, Impressum details and product data are collected in one shared folder.
- Design sign off: you review the home page plus one inner page, and development starts only after you approve both.
- Staging: the site is built on a staging address where you check every language on your own laptop and phone.
- Go live and handover: once the site is public, a short screen sharing session teaches your team to edit pages, vacancies and news.
Our CRM shows the status of each stage in real time, and you leave comments there with an attached screenshot rather than spreading them over several inboxes.
06Local search in Bielefeld: Business Profile, districts and directories
Being found locally in Bielefeld begins with a fully completed Google Business Profile whose name, address and phone match your site and Impressum to the letter. The profile name has to be your real world business name; adding "Dentist Bielefeld English speaking" to it goes against Google's rules. Businesses that serve customers on site, such as mobile care services or installers, may hide the street address and show their coverage area instead.
With the profile live, these steps move a web design Bielefeld project forward most:
- One version of your details: Das Örtliche, Gelbe Seiten, the profile and the Impressum all list identical contact data, including how the street name is shortened.
- Districts you really serve: mention Schildesche, Heepen or Sennestadt only where you work, ideally beside a photo of an actual job there.
- Neighboring towns: list Gütersloh, Herford or Bad Salzuflen on a service page only when you have customers there on a regular basis.
- Reviews in two languages: answer each review in the language it was written in, quickly and specifically, critical ones included.
A set of near identical pages that differ only by district name is what Google calls doorway pages, and such pages can weaken trust in the entire domain. A district page earns its place once there is a branch, a team or a real portfolio of work in that area. Our search engine optimization service explains how that structure grows step by step.
07Languages: German first, then English or Turkish for a reason
In web design Bielefeld projects, German is almost always the main language and the legal pages are drafted in German; a second language earns its cost when a clearly defined group needs it. Bielefeld University reports 23,342 students, 2,105 of them international, from 113 countries. That makes English worthwhile for practices, language schools, housing services and employers hiring abroad.
Turkish helps in health, legal, insurance and real estate services where a noticeable share of clients prefers to read in Turkish. Whatever the combination, the technical setup follows the same rules:
- A folder per language: German, English and any other version sit at separate URLs, and nobody gets bounced to another version because of their IP address.
- Two way hreflang: each version lists every sibling version plus itself; annotations that point in only one direction can be disregarded.
- Answers for expats: the English page covers what newcomers actually ask, such as whether statutory health insurance is accepted, instead of translating German slogans.
- Legal links in every version: Impressum and privacy policy stay one click away whatever language a visitor reads.
Check your annotations with our hreflang generator, and read the multilingual website page to settle URL structure and translation workflow before launch, so addresses never need to move.
08Speed, hosting and security
Speed and security for a Bielefeld site become measurable through EU hosting, self hosted fonts and Google's Core Web Vitals. Google rates a page "good" when, for three quarters of visits, LCP (largest contentful paint, how fast the main content appears) stays at 2.5 seconds or less, INP (interaction to next paint, how quickly a tap gets a response) at 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS (cumulative layout shift, how much the layout jumps) at 0.1 or less.
Fonts are a German specialty. On 20 January 2022 the Munich Regional Court (LG München I) awarded damages to a visitor because a site pulled Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent. Self hosted fonts avoid that. A short technical checklist:
- Server: EU data center, a current PHP release, daily automatic backups kept in a separate location.
- Images: WebP or AVIF files scaled to the slot they fill.
- Plugins and scripts: only what you actually use; each chat widget or outside tracker adds weight and another consent duty.
- Forms and uploads: HTTPS throughout, spam filtering and careful storage of uploaded drawings or CVs.
09Sector examples specific to Bielefeld
Bielefeld's blend of machine building, health care, consumer brands and a large university produces a handful of recurring website types, each with its own pages and flows. According to WEGE, the wider OstWestfalenLippe region counts around 300 machine building companies with 40,000 employees, and 37,715 people work in health and social services within the city.
- Suppliers to the machine building cluster: a foreign machining or components firm selling to OWL manufacturers needs capability pages listing machines, materials and tolerances, certificates, a German contact person and an RFQ form with drawing upload; see the industrial company website page.
- Clinics and care providers: plain German service pages, an English overview for international patients, accessible design and an application form for nurses and therapists, given the size of employers such as the Bethel foundations and Evangelisches Johanneswerk.
- University spinoffs and IT firms: WEGE counts about 220 IT companies with 6,196 employees; spinoffs need a plain language product story, team page, pilot customer contact and job listings, structured like our startup website page.
- Importers and partners of consumer brands: with Dr. Oetker headquartered in the city, food, packaging and textile partners are measured against polished brand sites, so trade inquiry forms and product data must be equally clean.
List the three pages without which your buyer, patient or applicant would leave; they get the most care in release one.
10German legal basics for a company website
Any commercial site addressing customers in Bielefeld falls under German and EU rules even when the company sits elsewhere, so the legal pages belong in the plan from week one. What follows is general information; ask a German lawyer to check your specific setup.
- Impressum: § 5 DDG (the German Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, in force since 14 May 2024 in place of the old TMG) requires provider details on business sites; doctors and other regulated professions add their chamber, legal job title, the state that awarded it and the professional rules that apply.
- Privacy policy: a Datenschutzerklärung under the GDPR explains every tool that handles personal data, from contact forms and analytics to maps and booking widgets.
- Consent: § 25 TDDDG allows non essential cookies and tracking only once a visitor agrees, and saying no has to be as easy as saying yes.
- Processors: your host, booking tool and newsletter provider each need a processing contract under Art. 28 GDPR.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) covers many online shops and services aimed at consumers; service micro enterprises with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet total are exempt, so have your case assessed.
Shops additionally need an order button that states the payment duty plainly, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", as § 312j BGB requires (the "Button Lösung"), plus withdrawal information for consumers. We build the technical side; the legal wording and its review stay with your lawyer.
11Relaunching without losing rankings
The real danger in a relaunch lies in URLs that Google already ranks disappearing, not in the new look, so every relaunch begins with a list of existing addresses. Pages that rank for district or technical searches must survive the move.
- Collect: export every old URL, plus the pages with clicks in Search Console and the pages other sites link to.
- Match: pair each old URL with the closest new page, keeping German with German and English with English.
- Redirect: on launch day, point every old URL straight to its new address with a 301, avoiding chains.
- Open for indexing: keep staging hidden from search engines, lift that block at launch and submit the fresh XML sitemap.
- Watch: follow the page indexing report and 404 errors for several weeks and fill any gaps in the redirect list.
Put the website link in your Business Profile, directory entries, LinkedIn page and e-mail signatures on the launch list too. Our website redesign page lays out the complete sequence.
12Common mistakes on Bielefeld business websites
Company sites in Bielefeld tend to repeat a handful of mistakes, and most of them disappear with a few decisions at kickoff. Each item comes with the better alternative:
- English only for a German market: local customers and authorities expect German; make German the main version and add English where a defined group needs it.
- Machine translated German: clumsy phrasing costs credibility with buyers in seconds; let a native German speaker write or edit every page.
- A borrowed Impressum: text lifted from another firm carries the wrong details; build it from your own company data and have it checked.
- Tracking before consent: analytics, maps or videos that load with the page break German rules; add a consent tool and load embeds only after a click.
- Capability claims without proof: "high precision" tells a purchasing manager nothing; show machines, tolerances, certificates and sample parts.
- Vacancies only on job boards: applicants check the employer's own site next; keep a current careers page with a short application form.
Mark each point on your current site as present, missing or wrong, and you have the priority list for your briefing.
13What drives the budget
The budget for a web design Bielefeld project follows the scope, never the location; our prices are the same in every city and country. When we prepare a proposal, these factors carry the most weight:
- Languages and copywriting: whether you deliver German and English texts or we write them shifts the effort considerably.
- Depth of pages: one detailed page per process or service is a different job from a single overview page.
- Forms and integrations: RFQ forms with file upload, booking tools, CRM or ERP connections and application flows add development work.
- Online shop: product count, payment methods, shipping rules and German checkout requirements widen the scope.
- Visual material: existing photos, a new shoot at your premises or technical illustrations.
Sort your requirements into two groups before the first call: "needed at launch" and "can follow within three months". The site then goes live sooner, and real data rather than guesswork shapes the second phase.
14The first 90 days and your next step
During the first three months after launch, the site settles into Bielefeld search results and gets adjusted to how real visitors behave, so split that period into three phases:
- Days 1 to 30: make sure Search Console and consent based analytics are recording, forms land in the right inbox and your Business Profile links to the new site.
- Days 31 to 60: see which district and technical queries gain impressions, add a missing service page or language version and start asking clients for reviews.
- Days 61 to 90: refresh the most visited pages, add new project photos or case descriptions and rewrite the priority list for phase two.
Our completed work so far is in Türkiye, from clinics to a logistics company; every site on our references page is live, so you can test it yourself. For the cost of a web design Bielefeld build, fixed packages are listed under web design pricing, while multilingual builds, careers sections and shops get a written quote. When the time is right, book a short video call and describe your company in English or German; we will agree on languages, pages and legal setup with you and follow up with a written scope.
