This guide is for forwarders with routes to Scandinavia, suppliers and young research companies around the Lübeck campus, international staff starting a business in the city and hosts who depend on the Travemünde summer. A web design Lübeck brief tends to open with colors and a logo, yet the decisions that shape results sit elsewhere: which language leads, which German duties apply, who owns the accounts and how the site copes with a strongly seasonal coast.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have arranged those decisions in the order they come up in a project. Every section gives you something concrete to act on: a check to run on your current site, a question to put to any agency or a choice to record in writing.
01What Lübeck's Economy Asks of a Website
A Lübeck website usually has to persuade readers who have never set foot in the city, because its strongest sectors sell to visitors and to buyers across the Baltic. Destatis counted 216,889 residents at the end of 2024, which makes Lübeck the second largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, but the people reading your pages reach far beyond that number.
The port operator LHG handled 21.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, with liner services to Sweden, Finland and the three Baltic states. Statistikamt Nord recorded 2,270,187 overnight stays in Lübeck that year, against 1,081,255 in Kiel and 381,150 in Flensburg. Dräger, founded in Lübeck in 1889, still has its headquarters here, next to a campus shared by the university, the technical university and Fraunhofer institutes.
Before anyone opens a design file, rank the readers your site must win:
- Buyers abroad: logistics managers in Gothenburg, Helsinki or Riga who compare providers in English and expect capacity, routes and certificates before they make contact.
- Procurement and partners: hospital and industry purchasing teams who need clear capability pages and a named contact, not a slogan.
- Candidates: engineers and researchers weighing a move to the Baltic coast who look for roles, working language and team photos.
- Guests and locals: visitors to the old town island and Travemünde, plus residents of St. Jürgen or Kücknitz searching on a phone.
Write the top two down. They decide the homepage, the menu and what you measure after launch.
02Who Searches for What Around Lübeck
Search behavior around Lübeck splits by language, season and purpose, so one service may need an English page, a German page and a separate Travemünde page. A freight query from Finland and a breakfast query on the Priwall peninsula have almost nothing in common.
- Trade searches in English: "ro ro freight Lübeck Sweden", "customs broker Lübeck" or "warehouse near Travemünde port". The reader wants a service page, a route overview and a quote form.
- District searches in German: "Physiotherapie St. Jürgen", "Friseur Buntekuh", "Kfz Werkstatt Schlutup". Map results dominate, so address, hours and a tappable phone number matter most.
- Coastal searches: "holiday apartment Travemünde beach" or "Ferienwohnung Priwall", mostly on phones and mostly in spring and summer.
- Campus searches: international students and visiting researchers searching in English for housing, translation services, coworking or an English speaking doctor.
Try a quick test on your phone. Type your five most valuable searches in English and in German, note which page types fill the top three results, and you will see which pages your site is missing.
Many companies also serve clients along the Hamburg corridor, an hour away by car. Our Hamburg page shows how search patterns differ in the larger port city, which helps if you plan pages for both markets.
03Working With a Team Based Outside Germany
A remote partner is a sound choice when decisions are visible and recorded, and that weighs more than where the studio sits. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul; projects in Germany run fully online, and Istanbul is one hour ahead of Lübeck in summer and two hours ahead in winter, so working days overlap almost completely.
Whether a candidate studio is in Lübeck, Kiel or Istanbul, put the same questions to it and ask for written answers:
- Who leads our video calls, in English or German, and do we receive a written summary of decisions after each one?
- Does the scope name every page, language, form, integration and revision round, and list what is excluded?
- Can we open the work in progress on a password protected preview address whenever we like?
- Who writes or edits the German copy, and who makes sure the English and German pages say the same thing?
- If our launch must land before the beach season or a trade fair, is the date in the written quote?
Whoever you shortlist for web design Lübeck work, judge live sites rather than mockups. Our projects so far are in Türkiye and are listed with their addresses on our references page; open three on your phone, submit a test form and assess them exactly as you would a studio down the road.
04Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts in Your Name
Everything your website depends on should belong to the company from the first day, never to an agency or to one employee's personal login. Research startups change founders, family firms hand over to the next generation and forwarders get acquired; an orphaned domain in a former colleague's inbox can stall all of that.
- Domain: a .de address registered to your GmbH, UG or foreign parent through a registrar where you hold the login, with a shared company mailbox as contact and auto renewal switched on. Our WHOIS lookup shows what is publicly recorded for any domain you already use.
- Hosting: servers inside the EU, a contract in the company's name and your own access to the hosting panel and to DNS, the system that points your domain at the web server and mail.
- Code and content: a full backup and the source files handed over at launch, plus an administrator account in the content system.
- Accounts: Google Business Profile, Search Console and the GA4 property created under the company account, with the agency added as a user.
Put these four points into the contract at quote stage. At handover you should receive one message with the access list, the backup location and screenshots of the user permissions, so changing provider later never depends on anyone's goodwill.
05The Project Step by Step, Entirely Online
A Lübeck project needs no travel at any stage; each phase runs through video calls, a written scope and a task list you can follow in our CRM. If your travels ever take you to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our Ataşehir office, but it is never a requirement.
- Discovery call: we learn your markets, your buyers abroad and your season, at a time that suits a morning in Lübeck.
- Written scope: pages, languages, forms, who supplies the legal texts and a launch date go into one document you approve.
- Content collection: photos, route lists, certificates, team bios and frequent questions go into a shared folder, with owners and deadlines.
- Design and preview: we walk through the first draft by screen share, then you review it on the protected preview address on your own phone.
- Launch checks: forms, consent banner, maps, redirects and language switching are tested, and the sitemap is submitted in Search Console.
- Handover: a short recorded training shows your team how to update routes, job openings or season hours without help.
Plan the launch backwards from the date that matters most. For a host in Travemünde that is the start of the summer booking period; for a supplier it may be a trade fair or a tender deadline. Write that date into the scope, not just into an e-mail.
06Local Search in Lübeck's Districts
For local visibility, a complete Google Business Profile that matches your site exactly, together with genuine reviews, outweighs most on page tweaks. Map results shift with the searcher's position, so someone in Moisling and someone in St. Gertrud may see different businesses for the same query.
- Profile name: exactly what is on your sign. Adding keywords such as "Cheap Freight Lübeck" breaks Google's guidelines and puts the profile at risk.
- Service area: trades that visit clients can hide the address and list Bad Schwartau, Stockelsdorf and the districts they truly cover.
- German directories: Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and 11880 should carry the same name, address and phone number as your site, letter for letter.
- Reviews: send a short link on the day a job is finished, and reply to criticism calmly, factually and in the reviewer's language.
On the site itself, name the areas you serve on your service pages instead of cloning one page per district. Pages that differ only by a place name can be treated as doorway pages. Travemünde is the exception worth a dedicated page, because a visitor there has different questions from someone in the city center. Local search does not end when a web design Lübeck project goes live. If you want this work carried on month by month, see our SEO service.
07German First, Then English or Turkish Where It Pays
In Lübeck, German remains the base language for customers, authorities and legal pages, while English is often the deciding language for international business. A second or third language earns its place only when it serves a defined reader.
- English pays off when: you ship to Scandinavia or the Baltics, recruit international staff, supply research groups on campus or host foreign guests in Travemünde.
- Turkish pays off when: a large share of your customers speak Turkish, families ask questions in Turkish on the phone or you offer services that rely on trust, such as translation or event catering.
- One language is enough when: your customers are local German speakers only; a half finished second language looks worse than none.
Build each language as its own set of pages with its own addresses, not as a machine translation widget. hreflang annotations tell Google which page serves which language, and every version must reference the others and itself. You can prepare or check that markup with our hreflang generator.
Write the English version for its reader instead of translating sentence by sentence. A Swedish buyer wants transit times, cargo types and contact names; a German homeowner wants hours and a phone number. Each version's first screen should answer its own reader's first question.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security Basics
Most visitors reach your site on a phone, often on a ferry terminal or a beach with weak reception, and a page that stalls sends them straight to the next result. Google's Core Web Vitals measure that experience with three numbers, judged at the 75th percentile of real visits.
- LCP: how long the largest visible element takes to load; 2.5 seconds or less counts as good. Oversized photos of rooms, ships or warehouses are the usual cause of trouble.
- INP: how quickly the page responds to a tap; aim for 200 milliseconds or less. Heavy chat widgets and booking scripts often push it up.
- CLS: how much the layout jumps while loading; keep it at 0.1 or less. Late consent banners and images without fixed dimensions cause most shifts.
On the server side, insist on EU hosting, automatic backups, current server software and HTTPS on every page. Serve fonts from your own server rather than from Google's: it is faster and avoids sending visitor IP addresses to a third party without consent.
After launch, adopt three habits: two factor sign in for every admin account, a monthly check of plugin and system updates, and spam protection on forms. Cleaning up after an attack always costs more effort than preventing one.
09Sector Structures That Fit Lübeck
The sector you work in decides which pages carry the site; a forwarder's quote form and a guesthouse's room page answer entirely different questions. The examples below are general advice drawn from the city's port, campus and coastal profile.
- Forwarding and customs: routes from the Skandinavienkai to Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states, cargo types, fleet and warehouse details and a quote form that asks for weight, dimensions and dates. The logistics company website page covers this structure in depth.
- Medtech suppliers and research startups: capability and product pages, certifications you actually hold, publications, a careers area in English and a direct path for procurement. Product claims come from your regulatory team, never from the copywriter.
- Hotels and holiday flats: one page per room type, walking time to the beach or the Holsten Gate, parking, breakfast and season dates on the first screen. See our hotel website page for the full setup.
- Local specialities: confectioners selling Lübecker Marzipan, a protected geographical indication, can let visitors reorder from home through a German compliant online shop.
Whatever your sector, give the homepage one primary action: request a quote, call or check availability. Four competing buttons make visitors leave without deciding.
10German Legal Basics for Business Websites
A business website in Germany needs a few legal elements that international founders often do not expect, and their technical setup belongs in the design plan from the start. The points below are general information; have the texts reviewed by a lawyer admitted in Germany (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: required under § 5 DDG, the German Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG) that replaced the TMG on 14 May 2024; it lists the legal entity, a full postal address, contact details and, where applicable, register and VAT numbers.
- Privacy policy: required under the GDPR (DSGVO) once you process personal data through forms, maps or analytics; providers such as your host need a processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only start after the visitor agrees.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) covers many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises offering services, with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
Online shops have further duties: the order button must state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" under § 312j BGB, and consumers receive withdrawal information. Our e-commerce service builds these steps into the checkout.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
A relaunch can erase years of search visibility within weeks if addresses and redirects are not planned before the switch. The most common error is retiring old URLs without pointing them anywhere, which turns every saved link and ranking into an error page.
- Inventory: export every existing URL, the pages with traffic in Search Console and the pages with external links into one sheet.
- Mapping: assign each old URL the closest new page by content; never redirect everything to the homepage.
- Permanent redirects: activate 301 redirects on launch day and confirm there are no chains or loops.
- Monitoring: review the not found report in Search Console daily for the first two weeks and fix gaps immediately.
Timing matters on the coast. A Travemünde host should not relaunch in midsummer, when a temporary dip in rankings hits the busiest weeks; the quiet months between November and February are a safer window. For a forwarder, avoid the weeks around a major tender.
12Common Mistakes on Lübeck Business Sites
The recurring problems on small and midsize Lübeck sites are mostly decisions rather than code, and each has a simple alternative. The list reflects general observation and does not point at individual businesses.
- German only for international buyers: a Finnish purchaser cannot judge your services; add English service pages and a quote form for the markets you serve.
- Winter hours in June: Travemünde guests assume you are closed; update hours on the site and the Business Profile on the same day.
- Phone number inside an image: it cannot be tapped or found; write it as text with a click to call link.
- Fonts loaded from Google and tracking before consent: common in ready made themes; host fonts locally and tie analytics to the consent banner.
- A contact page instead of an Impressum: it does not meet the legal duty; create a separate Impressum reachable from every page.
- Portal dependence for rooms: every booking arrives through commission platforms; offer a direct enquiry form and a clear contact route.
Another frequent issue is inconsistent details: one phone number on an old social profile, another in a directory and a third on the site. Track down old listings and either update or close them, so customers and Google see one set of facts.
13What Drives the Budget
Scope, not location, sets the budget; a company in Lübeck is priced by the same criteria as one in Hamburg or Istanbul. When you compare offers for web design Lübeck projects, make sure every quote defines the following items the same way.
- Number of languages: each extra language means its own page structure, hreflang setup and ongoing content care, not just a translation.
- Page count and type: a five page company profile and a site with a page per route, per room or per product line require very different effort.
- Integrations: booking engines, transport management systems, CRM or applicant tracking connections add work.
- Online shop: product count, payment methods, shipping rules and a checkout that follows German consumer law shape the effort.
- Content production: whether you or we write the copy and organize the photos changes a large share of the quote.
The biggest cost driver is scope that changes halfway. If a site planned in German suddenly needs English and Turkish versions, the navigation and templates have to be rethought, so mention any language you might add later in the first call.
Also ask about care after launch: who handles updates, backups and small text changes, and whether that is included or billed separately.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
Launch is the start of the work, not the end; the first three months show where the site lands in search and which pages bring enquiries. Managing that period with a simple calendar lets you judge results by data rather than by impression.
- Days 1 to 30: confirm indexing in Search Console, check that every form reaches the right inbox and that the Business Profile matches the site.
- Days 31 to 60: refine titles and descriptions of the most viewed pages, collect first reviews and count enquiries separately for the English and German pages.
- Days 61 to 90: strengthen pages that bring no enquiries, move recurring questions into the FAQ and, if the season is near, refresh Travemünde photos and hours.
Before you decide, answer three questions in writing: who is the site's first reader, which languages it needs and which date it must be ready for. With those answers, a web design Lübeck project can be sized correctly from the start.
To talk through the scope of your web design Lübeck project, get in touch with us; after a short video call in English or German we send a written scope and quote. Fixed packages and what they include are listed in our pricing section. Whatever your sector, the first step stays the same: write down whom the site has to win, and in which language.
