This guide is for international companies, founders and expat run businesses in Hamburg that are planning a new website or replacing one that no longer brings enquiries: forwarders and traders, engineering suppliers, consultancies, clinics, hotels, restaurants and young software firms. Most web design Hamburg decisions that matter are made before anyone opens a design file: who the site must convince, in which languages, under which German rules, and who owns every account.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have arranged those decisions in the order they come up in a real project. Every section ends with something concrete you can check on your current site, decide internally or ask any agency you are talking to.
01What Hamburg's Economy Expects From Your Website
A Hamburg website has to make clear within seconds which part of the city's economy you serve and who your buyer is. Statistikamt Nord calculates that Hamburg's economy grew by 1.7% in real terms in 2024, while Germany as a whole shrank by 0.2%. Growth attracts competition, so a vague homepage costs you more here than in a quieter market.
Translate the city's main drivers into concrete jobs for your site:
- Port and trade: Hafen Hamburg Marketing names China as the port's largest partner and reports record container traffic with the USA in 2024. A trading or forwarding site must let a buyer abroad understand your services and request a quote without a phone call.
- Aviation: With Airbus in Finkenwerder and Lufthansa Technik at the airport, suppliers need pages where procurement teams find certifications, capabilities and contacts in one place.
- Fairs and the energy transition: SMM, WindEnergy Hamburg and Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe fill the city each autumn; service firms need fair specific information online weeks in advance.
- Visitors: A record 1.3 million cruise passengers came in 2024. Restaurants, tours and shops need opening hours, menus and directions that read well on a phone.
Pick one or two of these jobs as the primary purpose and write them down. That choice decides the navigation, the first screen on mobile and what you will measure after launch.
02Search Intent in Hamburg: Quarters, Buyers and Visitors
People searching in Hamburg reveal their intent through the language they use and the place name they add, and each intent needs a different page type. The city is split into seven boroughs: Hamburg-Mitte, Altona, Eimsbüttel, Hamburg-Nord, Wandsbek, Bergedorf and Harburg, and residents often search by the quarter rather than the city.
- Quarter and proximity: "Zahnarzt Winterhude", "Steuerberater Ottensen" or "English speaking doctor near me". Map results dominate; your page needs an address, hours and a phone number people can tap.
- Expat questions: "relocation service Hamburg", "English kindergarten Hamburg", "tax advisor for expats Hamburg". These people want a clear English page that explains the process and who handles it.
- International buyers: "ship repair Hamburg", "aerospace machining supplier Germany", "customs broker port of Hamburg". These searches need detailed English service pages with proof.
- Events and seasons: During SMM, WindEnergy Hamburg or the Hafengeburtstag in May, visitors search for catering, stand builders, interpreters and transfers.
Run a short test on your own phone: type your five most important services once with a quarter name, once in English with "Hamburg", and note what appears on the first screen. Maps, directories, ads or competitor sites each call for a different response. Agency searches work the same way: web design Hamburg results mostly show firms based in the city, which is a reason to judge process rather than postcode.
Remember the commuter belt as well. If clients come from Norderstedt, Pinneberg, Ahrensburg, Buxtehude or Stade, say so plainly on your service pages so both visitors and Google understand your real service area.
03Choosing a Web Design Partner Outside Germany
Working with a team outside Germany is safe when the process is written, visible and easy to reach; distance itself is rarely the problem. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and projects in Germany run entirely online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Hamburg in summer and two hours ahead in winter, so working days overlap for most of the day.
Ask every agency the same questions and get the answers in writing, wherever they are based:
- Calls: Who leads the video calls, in which language, and do you receive a written summary of decisions after each one?
- Scope: Is there a page list, a language list, a list of forms and integrations, a fixed number of revision rounds and an explicit list of exclusions?
- Live preview: Can you open the design and the build on a password protected staging address whenever you like?
- German copy: Who writes or edits the German pages, and who checks formal address and industry terms for consistency?
- Support after launch: When a form breaks, who answers, through which channel and within what time?
Judge references live, not as screenshots: open them on your phone, send a form, tap the number. For web design Hamburg projects our references so far come from Türkiye; every site is listed with its address on our references page, so you can put it through exactly that test.
04Ownership of Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Everything your website depends on should be registered to your company before the first line of code is written. Otherwise a later change of agency, or simple access during an outage, depends on the goodwill of a former supplier.
- .de domain: Registered through a registrar of your choice with your company as holder; use a shared company e-mail address, not one person's inbox, as the contact.
- Hosting: A contract with a data center inside the EU, with your own login to the customer area and to DNS, the settings that connect your domain to the web server and mailboxes.
- Code and licenses: Handover of the source code, usage rights granted in writing, and font, image and plugin licenses in your company's name.
- Google accounts: Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile belong to a company account; the agency receives user access you can remove at any time.
- Two administrators: Two people inside your company hold full rights on each account, so nobody's departure locks you out.
Any provider that processes visitor data on your behalf, such as the host, a form service or a booking tool, needs a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR, known in Germany as an Auftragsverarbeitungsvertrag. Keep these agreements together with a list of all logins and roles in your company records or password manager.
05The Project Process, Six Steps and Fully Online
A web design Hamburg project with us runs in six steps, and you sign off each one before the next begins; every approval is logged in our CRM so decisions stay traceable.
- Kickoff call: Goals, audiences, competitors in your segment and existing content; the result is a written document with the page list and responsibilities.
- Structure and copy: Navigation and text come before visuals. You supply facts, photos and the questions buyers or customers ask most often.
- Design: The homepage and one typical inner page are presented on a call and opened as a browser preview; the remaining pages follow after your approval.
- Development: Legal pages, cookie consent, forms and measurement are built on a protected staging server.
- Testing: Forms, loading speed, display on common phones and every language version are checked before the domain is switched.
- Launch and training: We go live together on a call and record a training session so your team can update content without us.
Calls are scheduled around Hamburg business hours, which the one or two hour time difference makes easy. If your travels take you to Istanbul, you are welcome at our Ataşehir office for a meeting in person; it is an option, and no step of the process depends on it. Package contents are described on our web design service page.
06Local SEO in Hamburg Without Doorway Pages
Showing up in Hamburg map results is mainly the job of your Google Business Profile; your website supports and confirms what the profile says. Set it up in this order:
- Business name: Exactly as on your sign and registration. Adding keywords such as "Hamburg English Dentist" breaks Google's guidelines and puts the profile at risk.
- Category and service area: One clear primary category. A business that visits clients, such as a relocation or IT support firm, can hide its address and list areas it truly serves, for example HafenCity, Eppendorf and Blankenese.
- Directories: Name, address, phone and hours should match your site character for character on Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and industry directories.
- Reviews: Ask with a short link after the job is done, and reply to each review briefly and politely in the language it was written in.
Creating near identical pages for Barmbek, Bahrenfeld, Eidelstedt and twenty other quarters, with only the name swapped, is classed as doorway pages in Google's spam policies. List your real service areas on the relevant service page instead, and give a second location its own page only if it really exists, with address, photos and team.
If you want the profile, reviews and local content looked after month by month, we run that as part of our SEO service.
07Language Strategy: English, German and When Turkish Helps
For an international company in Hamburg, the lead language depends on who buys from you, but German can never be missing. Buyers abroad compare suppliers in English, while local customers, landlords, banks and authorities expect German, and legal pages must be fully available.
- English first: When most revenue comes from abroad, for example a ship supply firm or an aviation subcontractor, English can lead and German covers key services and legal texts.
- German first: When you sell mainly within Germany, German leads and English serves international hires, partners and visitors.
- Turkish as a third language: Statistikamt Nord's population register shows Türkiye as the most common country of origin among Hamburg residents with a migration background. Clinics, insurance brokers, travel agencies and law firms with many Turkish speaking clients may benefit from Turkish pages written for that reader.
Each language needs its own URLs, for example a separate subfolder, connected with hreflang: every version references itself and all others. A browser translation widget gives Google no separate pages and will not make you visible in English or Turkish searches.
The multilingual website page explains the technical setup, and you can test existing tags with our hreflang generator and checker.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security Standards
Speed is a design decision, because many Hamburg visitors open your site on a phone, on the U Bahn, at a fair stand or on a cruise terminal walkway. Google's Core Web Vitals treat these values, measured at the 75th percentile of visits, as good:
- LCP: The largest visible element loads in 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP: The page responds to a tap or click within 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS: Layout shift while loading stays at 0.1 or less.
Loading Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent led to a damages award against a site owner in a ruling by LG München I on 20 January 2022. Hosting fonts on your own server removes that issue; maps, embedded videos and chat widgets should load only after the visitor consents.
On security, treat these as the minimum: a valid SSL certificate, regular software and plugin updates, daily backups stored away from the web server, two factor login for the admin area and spam protection on forms. Check speed yourself before handover by entering your homepage and your busiest service page into PageSpeed Insights and noting the mobile result. Serving images in WebP and keeping a single image on the first screen usually improves LCP on smaller sites.
09Sector Examples Shaped by Hamburg
The businesses that define Hamburg each need a different page structure, so one template applied to all of them leaves gaps everywhere.
- Forwarders and traders: Separate pages for sea freight, customs clearance, warehousing and specific trade lanes, plus a quote form that asks for cargo type, volume and destination. The structure is set out on our logistics company website page.
- Aviation and engineering suppliers: Capability pages, quality approvals, machine lists and downloadable data sheets, organized so procurement can shortlist you without a call; see the industrial company website page.
- Maritime services: Ship supply, repair, surveying and crew services need 24/7 contact paths, clear port coverage and short response time promises that you can actually keep.
- Expat services: Relocation agents, English speaking therapists and international schools need explanations of German procedures in plain English and an easy first appointment request.
- Hospitality for visitors: Hotels, harbor tours and restaurants need accurate hours, departure points and a link to the booking tool you already use, all live before the cruise season.
Whatever your sector, keep the main call to action, quote, booking or call, in the same place and with the same label on every page.
10German Legal Basics for Your Website
Being an international company does not change the rules: a commercial website run from Germany follows German and EU law. These are the core points:
- Impressum: Under § 5 DDG, which replaced the TMG on 14 May 2024, a commercial site shows the company name, a postal address in Germany, a fast contact route and, where they exist, the commercial register entry and VAT identification number. The page must be reachable from every language version.
- Privacy policy: A GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung that names each form, map, analytics and booking tool.
- Cookie consent: Under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and trackers may only run after consent; placing "reject" as visibly as "accept" is the sound approach.
- Online shops: The "Button Lösung" in § 312j BGB requires an order button with wording such as "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers receive withdrawal information (Widerrufsbelehrung).
- Accessibility: Since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) covers many consumer facing online shops and services, while micro enterprises offering services, with fewer than 10 staff, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
We handle the technical implementation. Have the wording of your legal texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) before launch.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
When you replace an established site, the real risk is not the new design but old URLs quietly disappearing. If an address Google knows has no counterpart on the new site, the visitors and link value it carried are lost. Follow this order:
- Inventory: Export every page with visits in the past twelve months from Search Console, plus all URLs in the current sitemap.
- Mapping: Assign each old URL to its closest new page and plan a permanent 301 redirect; never send everything to the homepage.
- Keep what works: Preserve the title, topic and main search terms of pages that bring traffic.
- Staging: Protect the test site with a password; Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page blocked in robots.txt.
- After launch: Submit the new sitemap and watch 404 errors and impressions daily for two weeks.
Comparing old and new URL lists with our redirect mapping tool catches forgotten pages before launch. If you also move domains, for example from .com to .de, use the change of address tool in Search Console, keep the old domain redirecting for at least a year and update the URL in your Business Profile and directories on the same day.
12Common Mistakes on Hamburg Company Sites
These mistakes show up again and again on sites of international firms and founders in Hamburg, and each has a simple better alternative:
- English only: Local customers, authorities and German speaking applicants leave. The better option is at least German service pages and full German legal texts next to the English site.
- Impressum copied from the parent company abroad: The Hamburg entity is invisible. Show the German company, its address, register entry and VAT number instead.
- Trackers that fire before consent: Google Fonts, maps and social feeds load on the first second. Host fonts locally and load the rest only after consent.
- Proof hidden in PDFs: Certifications and references sit in one large brochure. Give each capability its own page with the key facts in text and the PDF as a supplement.
- Doorway pages for every quarter: Pages for Altona and Wandsbek differ only by name. List real service areas once on the service page.
- Stale fair information: Last year's stand number or SMM dates are still online. Set calendar reminders before each fair and cruise season.
13What Drives a Web Design Hamburg Budget
The scope of the site, not the city, decides a web design Hamburg quote, so two companies of similar size can end up with very different budgets. When you compare offers, put these items side by side:
- Languages and copy: How many languages, and who writes and edits the English, German and possibly Turkish text, changes the workload more than anything else.
- Pages and services: A full page for every service or product group; five services and fifteen services are different projects.
- Special functions: Product catalogs, quote configurators, booking flows, online shops or customer portals go well beyond a presentation site.
- Photos and content: A shoot in Hamburg, technical data sheets or case studies need their own planning.
- Integrations: Connections to CRM, ERP, booking or applicant tracking systems.
- After launch: Maintenance, updates and ongoing SEO support.
If a quote does not state what is included and excluded, ask before comparing. The healthy way to reduce a budget is to phase the scope, for example launching German and English first and adding Turkish or a fair landing page later, rather than lowering quality.
14Your First 90 Days and the Next Step
The real value of a new site shows in the three months after launch, and a simple schedule keeps small issues from growing.
- Days 1 to 30: Check pages excluded from the index in Search Console, test every form in every language and align Business Profile hours with the site.
- Days 31 to 60: Turn the three questions buyers ask most into pages or FAQ entries in English and German, and send your first review requests.
- Days 61 to 90: See which pages generate enquiries, rewrite titles and opening paragraphs of weak pages and plan content for the autumn fairs or the cruise season.
To get a sense of budget, compare our fixed packages in the pricing section of our web design page; multilingual sites, catalogs and shops receive a written quote. When you are ready to discuss web design Hamburg plans for your company, describe your business and buyers through our contact form in English or German, and we will agree languages, legal pages and scope with you on a first call and follow up with a written proposal.
