This guide is for international companies, founders and expat run businesses that sell to, hire in or operate from Leipzig: forwarders near the airport, suppliers to the car plants, hotels and restaurants that fill up during fair weeks, and young firms around the universities. A web design Leipzig project is less about a pretty homepage than about reaching three groups at once: German customers, international buyers and the authorities and partners who check you before they sign.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have arranged the decisions in the order they come up in a real project. Each section ends with something you can check, decide or ask an agency. Legal points are general information; have your final texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
01What a Website Has to Do in Leipzig's Economy
A Leipzig company website has to serve an economy built on movement: trade fairs, air cargo, vehicle production and visitors. According to Destatis, Leipzig had 611,850 residents on 31 December 2024, ahead of Dresden with 564,904 and Chemnitz with 245,618, which makes it the largest city in Saxony. Each of its four drivers asks something specific of your site:
- Trade fairs: Leipziger Messe hosted 192 events in 2024, including the Book Fair, with more than 12,000 exhibitors and around 889,000 visitors. Visitors decide on their phones, so hours, location and a call button belong on the first screen.
- Air cargo: Leipzig Halle Airport handled around 1.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 and is DHL's largest hub worldwide. Logistics partners compare service areas, lead times and response speed before they ever call.
- Vehicle production: BMW and Porsche both run complete vehicle plants in the city, supplied just in time by medium sized firms. Purchasing teams want capabilities and certificates they can scan in a minute.
- Visitors: The city recorded 2.0 million arrivals and 3.8 million overnight stays in 2024, with 268,159 arrivals from abroad. Guests from the Netherlands, the USA and Poland led overnight stays among foreign markets.
Before any design work, write one sentence that names the driver your revenue depends on and the single action a visitor from that group should take. That sentence decides your navigation, your homepage and what you measure.
02Who Searches for What in Leipzig
Search behavior in Leipzig splits into three patterns, and each needs a different kind of page. Local customers combine a service with an Ortsteil (district) name, such as "Steuerberater Gohlis", "Zahnarzt Südvorstadt" or "Fahrradwerkstatt Plagwitz". On phones they add "in der Nähe", and the map results appear above everything else.
Business buyers search by capability rather than place: "Kontraktlogistik Sachsen", "CNC Fertigung Automobilzulieferer" or "air freight forwarder Germany". These searches reward detailed service pages, not a district list. The third group is time bound, and the city's calendar shapes it:
- Book Fair week in spring: publishers, authors and readers from outside the city look for restaurants, rooms and transport, many of them in English.
- Specialist fairs and congresses: exhibitors need stand builders, caterers, interpreters and drivers, usually booked weeks ahead.
- Semester start in October: more than 7,000 people began at Leipzig University in autumn 2024, which drives searches for flats, movers, phone repair and English speaking services.
- Bach Festival and Christmas market: cultural visitors search for tables, tickets and opening hours on short notice.
To see which pattern matters to you, open Search Console after launch and sort queries by impressions. If district searches dominate, invest in your Business Profile; if capability searches dominate, invest in service pages.
03Working With a Partner Outside Germany
A web design Leipzig project can run well with a team abroad as long as every decision is written down and every stage is visible on a live preview. What causes trouble in remote projects is rarely distance; it is decisions made on a call and never recorded.
Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours in winter, so a shared working day is long and calls fit into normal office hours. Before you commit to any agency, ask these questions:
- German copy: who writes the German text, and does a native speaker proofread it before launch?
- Preview: will you see each stage on a real preview address, on your own phone, before it goes live?
- Written record: where are scope, change requests and approvals stored, and can you read that record at any time?
- Live work: can you open sites the team has built and test their speed, forms and language switch yourself?
- Support after launch: who answers, through which channel, and within what time frame?
Read the scope of our web design services with the same questions in mind. A quote that does not list pages, languages, who supplies text and which accounts are handed over leaves the gaps to be argued about later.
04Ownership: Domain, EU Hosting, Code and Accounts
Everything your website depends on should be registered to your company, with the agency holding user access only. For a .de domain, the central registry is DENIC; you register through a registrar, and the domain holder (Domaininhaber) on record must be your company, not the agency or a former employee.
Hosting inside the European Union keeps data protection questions simple for German customers and partners. If your Leipzig entity belongs to a group abroad, decide early whether the German site runs on its own hosting or inside the group's infrastructure, because that affects who signs the processing agreements. A handover checklist helps:
- Domain: registrar login in a company account, renewal date in a shared calendar, DNS records documented.
- Hosting and backups: administrator access to the hosting panel and a written note of where backups are stored.
- Code and design files: the source code plus editable versions of logos, icons and layouts.
- Google properties: owner rights in Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics stay with you; the agency is added as a user.
- Email: mailbox administration and the SPF, DKIM and DMARC records that keep your mail out of spam folders.
With this in place, moving to another provider later is a short technical task instead of a negotiation. Review the list once a year, especially after staff changes.
05The Online Project Process, Step by Step
A web design Leipzig project with us runs fully online, and each step ends with a written result you approve. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul; we have no office, representative or employees in Germany. If your travels take you to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our office in Ataşehir, but no stage of the project requires it.
- Kickoff call: a video call in English or German about your buyers, markets, languages and the one action the site must drive.
- Written scope: page list, languages, who writes and who proofreads, who supplies the legal texts and the dates for draft and launch.
- Design review: homepage and one inner page presented by screen share; feedback is recorded during the call.
- Build on a preview: development runs on a password protected preview address, with progress visible in our CRM.
- Testing: consent banner, forms, language switch and Core Web Vitals are checked before launch, on real phones.
- Launch and training: the site goes live, Search Console is connected and your team learns to update notices such as fair dates.
The second step carries the most weight. Agreeing on scope in writing before any design starts prevents most misunderstandings between two countries and keeps the timeline realistic for both sides.
06Local SEO in Leipzig Without Doorway Pages
For any business that serves walk in or nearby customers, the Google Business Profile drives more local visibility than any single page on the site. The business name in the profile must match your real name, without added keywords such as "Leipzig" or a service term; Google's guidelines forbid it and profiles can be suspended for it.
Keep profile and website consistent with these steps:
- Category: choose the narrowest accurate primary category, since "Physiotherapeut" and "Massagepraxis" appear in different searches.
- Service area: mobile services such as movers or couriers can hide their address and list real areas like Leipzig, Markkleeberg, Taucha and Schkeuditz.
- Special hours: set them for the Book Fair, public holidays and the Christmas market season, and show the same hours on the site.
- Directories: make name, address and phone match exactly in Gelbe Seiten and Das Örtliche.
- Reviews: send customers a direct review link after the job and reply in the language the review was written in.
On the website, mention only the districts you actually serve, with real detail: response times in Connewitz, parking near your workshop in Paunsdorf, a tram stop in Lindenau. Twenty near identical district pages count as doorway pages and tend to hurt. If you want ongoing local work, our SEO services cover it monthly.
07German First, English Where Buyers Read It
For a Leipzig company, German remains the base language even when your buyers are international, because customers, authorities and German partners read the site in German and the legal pages must exist in German. English then becomes the lead language wherever decision makers abroad are involved.
Use these criteria to decide which languages to open and in what depth:
- English in full: when purchasing teams, forwarders or investors outside Germany make the decision; capability pages and contact persons must be complete.
- English summary: for restaurants, hotels and services that serve fair visitors and guests from the Netherlands, the USA or Poland.
- Turkish or other community languages: when a noticeable share of your customers writes to you in that language, for example in insurance, translation or moving services.
- Recruiting pages in English: when you hire international graduates from Leipzig's universities or skilled staff from abroad.
Each language needs its own URL and hreflang annotations that point to every other version and to itself. You can draft the tags with our hreflang generator and read how we structure separate language versions on the multilingual website page. Avoid browser style translation plugins; they create text nobody approved.
08Speed, Hosting and Security
A fair visitor on mobile data in a crowded hall gives your page a few seconds, so in web design Leipzig projects speed is a business requirement rather than a technical detail. Google measures page experience with Core Web Vitals and calls a page good when, for 75 percent of visits, LCP (how fast the main content appears) is 2.5 seconds or less, INP (how fast the page reacts to a tap) is 200 milliseconds or less and CLS (how much the layout shifts while loading) is 0.1 or less.
Typical fixes are modest: images in modern formats at the right size, fewer scripts, no autoplaying video on mobile and fonts served from your own server. That last point is also legal hygiene, since a Munich regional court awarded damages in 2022 against a site that loaded Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent.
For security, a short list covers most risks:
- Encryption: HTTPS on every page, with automatic certificate renewal.
- Updates: the content management system and plugins updated on a schedule, unused plugins removed.
- Backups: daily copies stored away from the main server, and one restore actually tested.
- Forms: spam protection on quote and contact forms, and submitted data kept only as long as needed.
Before launch, open the site on a phone using mobile data only and complete your own quote form. It reveals problems that lab tools miss.
09Leipzig Sector Examples: Freight, Suppliers, Hospitality
Leipzig's strongest sectors each need a different site structure, and copying a generic template wastes the advantage. These are the setups that fit the city's economy:
- Forwarders, warehouses and couriers: service area maps, fleet and equipment, insurance details, customs capabilities if you offer them and a short quote form; the full structure is on our logistics company website page.
- Automotive suppliers and engineering firms: capability pages per process, quality certificates as downloads, machine lists and a named contact for purchasing. Our manufacturing company website page shows how to arrange this content.
- Hotels, restaurants and cafés: menus and rooms readable on a phone, a link to your booking tool, current hours and a short English section for fair weeks.
- Startups and research spinoffs: a clear product page, a team page and an English careers section that speaks to graduates of Leipzig University, HTWK Leipzig or HHL.
- International subsidiaries: a German site for the local entity that links to the group site without duplicating its content.
Companies serving both Leipzig and the state capital can read how we approach that market on the web design Dresden page. In both cities the rule is the same: real service information for each place, never copied text with a new city name.
10German Legal Basics for Company Websites
Any business website aimed at Germany must meet a set of legal duties, regardless of where the company or its agency is based. Under § 5 DDG, the German Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG) that replaced the old Telemedia Act on 14 May 2024, the site needs an easily reachable Impressum with the legally required company details. Once personal data is processed, a privacy policy under the GDPR (DSGVO) is required as well.
On the technical side, plan for these points:
- Consent: § 25 TDDDG requires consent before non essential cookies or tracking run; Google also requires consent mode for measurement and ad personalization for users in the European Economic Area.
- Processors: hosting, form tools and booking systems that touch personal data need a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
- Accessibility: the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises offering services, with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros in turnover or balance sheet total, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: the order button must state clearly that the order is binding and paid, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need cancellation information (Widerrufsbelehrung).
We implement the technical side; the content of legal texts is your responsibility and that of your lawyer. If your group already has an English privacy policy, it still needs a German version written for German law.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
Most ranking losses after a relaunch come from old URLs that no longer exist, so the redirect plan matters more than the new design. If an existing page ranks for "Spedition Leipzig" or a district search, keep its address or redirect it properly. These steps keep the risk low:
- Inventory: export all indexed URLs from Search Console and a crawler, and mark the pages that bring clicks.
- Redirect map: assign each old URL to the closest new page with a permanent 301 redirect, never everything to the homepage.
- Content carryover: keep titles, headings and answers that already perform; change layout before you change wording.
- Preview testing: test redirects, forms and the consent banner on the preview, not on the live site.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap, then check coverage and search performance weekly for the first month.
If the domain changes too, use the change of address tool in Search Console and keep the old domain registered for at least a year. Our approach is described in detail on the website redesign page.
12Common Mistakes on Leipzig Company Sites
Weak results in web design Leipzig projects usually come from planning errors rather than design errors, and each one has a straightforward alternative:
- English only: a site without German leaves local customers and authorities guessing; publish German key pages and legal texts, and keep English for international buyers.
- Machine translated German: unedited automatic translation reads as careless to German buyers; have German copy written or at least proofread by a native speaker.
- Tracking before consent: analytics, pixels and external fonts loading on first visit break German rules; block them until consent and host fonts locally.
- Fair week chaos: different hours on the site, in the profile and on the door; maintain one notice section and update the profile the same day.
- Vague capability pages: "high quality solutions" tells a purchasing team nothing; list processes, tolerances, certificates and capacities in plain terms.
- Doorway pages: separate pages for every Ortsteil with identical text; describe the areas you serve on one strong service page instead.
If two or more of these apply to your current site, fixing them may deliver more than a full redesign, and faster.
13What Drives the Budget
Budgets for web design Leipzig projects depend on what the site has to do, not on the city; our prices are the same wherever you are based. When comparing offers, check whether each of these drivers is spelled out:
- Languages and copy: two or three language versions add writing, proofreading and maintenance, often more than the design itself.
- Page templates: the number of distinct layouts, such as service, capability, case and careers pages, sets the design and build effort.
- Integrations: booking tools, quote calculators, CRM connections or a supplier portal widen the scope.
- Online sales: product count, payment and shipping rules and German shop law put shops in their own category.
- Visual material: using existing photos is different from planning a shoot or custom illustrations.
A practical way to control cost is phasing: launch a complete German site with an English capability section first, then extend English or add Turkish once Search Console shows demand. The legal and technical base is right from day one, and spending follows evidence.
14Your First 90 Days and the Next Step
Launch starts the learning phase; the first three months show how Leipzig customers and international buyers actually find you. Splitting that time into three stages keeps the work focused:
- Days 1 to 30: confirm indexing in Search Console, verify that the consent banner really blocks tracking, test every form and point your Business Profile to the new site.
- Days 31 to 60: ask satisfied customers for reviews, publish your first fair or seasonal notice and add answers to the three questions you hear most.
- Days 61 to 90: study search queries and form submissions, plan pages for unmet topics and decide on further languages based on that data.
Before you choose a partner for web design Leipzig projects, be clear on three answers: which language your buyers read, which action the site must drive and who supplies the legal texts. With those settled, a project moves quickly.
Fixed price packages are listed in the pricing section of our web design page. To discuss languages, pages and scope for your Leipzig website, get in touch with us for a short video call, and we will follow up with a written scope and quote.
