A website for an Erzurum business is usually judged by someone far away. A tour operator in Istanbul or abroad checks a hotel before booking a ski group for Palandöken, a food buyer compares dairy suppliers before ordering civil cheese, and a family living in Europe looks for a reliable contact for its affairs back home. None of them can drop by, so the site has to answer their questions on its own.
Talha Aslan and team wrote this guide for hotels, producers, craftspeople and service businesses in Erzurum, and for the partners who work with them from other cities and countries. It follows a project's decisions in order, with checks you can run yourself.
01What a Website Has to Do in Erzurum's Economy
The first job of an Erzurum website is to make clear, within one screen, which part of the local economy the business belongs to. In the 2025 table published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry with TÜİK data, the province had 780,675 head of cattle, third in Turkey after Konya and Izmir; neighboring Kars had about 604 thousand and Ağrı about 317 thousand. Meat, milk and feed drive a large share of local trade.
Three other engines sit beside livestock: winter sports at Palandöken and Konaklı, Atatürk University, founded on 7 June 1957, and a long list of registered regional products. Each engine brings a different reader. Before any design work, answer these questions in writing:
- Revenue source: Does most of your income come from the ski season, from wholesale and livestock sales, or from local customers all year?
- Decision maker: Is the person choosing you a tour operator, a retail buyer, a student, or a relative managing things from abroad?
- Evidence: Which photos, certificates or references would convince that person, and do you have them today?
These answers decide the menu, the headline on the first screen and the order in which pages get written. Without them, the result tends to be a brochure that mentions everything and persuades nobody.
02Who Searches for Erzurum, and When
Search demand around Erzurum shifts with the seasons, and a site should publish its content a few weeks ahead of each shift. Many searchers have never visited the city, so pages must explain local details that residents take for granted.
- Late autumn and winter: Searches for Palandöken hotels, ski lessons, equipment rental and airport transfers, often from other cities and from abroad.
- September and October: New students and their parents look for housing, tutoring centers, cafés and stationery shops near the campus.
- Before Eid al Adha: Demand for sacrificial animals, shares and slaughter services rises; breeders need clear delivery and animal information.
- Summer: Travelers heading to Tortum Waterfall, the Pasinler hot springs and the historic madrasas look for rooms, restaurants and cağ kebab.
- All year: Online searches for civil cheese, butter, honey and Oltu stone jewelry, where buyers want origin and shipping terms.
Visitors from outside also phrase their searches differently from locals. A resident types a neighborhood name; an international group leader types "Erzurum ski holiday" or "how to get to Palandöken". Short information pages that answer those broad questions often become the path into your booking page.
Pick the two periods that matter most to you and plan one page for each.
03Choosing a Partner Outside the Province
We work with Erzurum businesses and their partners entirely online, so the right agency is the one that records decisions clearly, not the one closest to your door. Video calls and a shared folder keep the project moving even when winter weather disrupts roads or flights.
Ask every agency you talk to the following, and get the answers in writing:
- Seasonal timing: Will the site launch before the first snow searches or before the enrollment period starts?
- Photo plan: Is there a shot list for your rooms, herd, cheese cellar or workshop, and a schedule for sending it?
- Approval record: Can you see who approved which page and when?
- Live work: Which hotel, producer or product sites can you open on your phone right now?
Skip the screenshots: open a live hotel site, fill in its enquiry form and see how long a reply takes. Our own hotel, livestock and online store projects are on our references page; none of them is from Erzurum, but their structure matches the province's profile closely.
The real risk in remote work is undocumented decisions, not distance. A short written summary after each call prevents most later disputes.
04Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
The domain, the hosting account, the site files and every analytics account should belong to your business, and the quote should say so. A common pattern in family businesses is a site registered years ago under a relative's or a former employee's personal account.
On handover day, check this list together:
- Domain: The registrant is your company, and renewal reminders go to a company e-mail address, not a personal one.
- Hosting panel: You hold an administrator login, and the backup schedule and location are written down.
- Code and content: Files and database can be handed over in full on request; paid components list whose name the license is in.
- Analytics and ads: Search Console and GA4 sit under your own account, with the agency added as a user.
- Business Profile: You are the primary owner of the Google Business Profile; the agency is added as a manager.
When ownership is split across borders, for example a hotel run in Erzurum with a business partner in Germany, decide who holds which credentials and store them in a shared password manager. If the booking form breaks during a January weekend, a missing password can cost a full day of enquiries.
05The Project Process, Step by Step
Speed in a remote project comes from a fixed order of steps and a clear approval at the end of each. With an Erzurum business, we work in this sequence:
- Discovery call: Over video we review your season, your buyers and your current site; for a winter business we ask in which months bookings arrive and from which markets.
- Written scope: Page list, languages, forms and delivery date arrive in the quote; work starts once you approve it.
- Material checklist: We send a list for photos of rooms, barns, cheese cellars or workshops, plus certificates and product details.
- Design approval: You review the draft live in the browser and leave comments on the exact spot; no code is written before sign off.
- Build and testing: The site is tested on several phones and on a throttled mobile connection, and every form is sent as a real enquiry.
- Launch and training: After launch, a video session shows you how to update season pages and products yourself.
Photography shapes the Erzurum timeline more than any other step. Snowy views can only be shot in winter and green pastures only in summer, so we agree on timing at the start and use placeholder images that get replaced later.
You follow every step live in our CRM. If you are ever in Istanbul and prefer to meet in person, we can see you at our Ataşehir office by appointment; tracking continues in the same system.
06Local Search and the Google Business Profile
Local visibility starts with a correct Google Business Profile whose details match the website exactly. The business name must match the real name on the sign; adding keywords such as "ski hotel Erzurum" to the name breaks Google's guidelines.
Erzurum's district layout makes this interesting. The city center is split between Yakutiye, Palandöken and Aziziye, yet most people search with the city name only. Businesses in Oltu, Horasan, Aşkale or İspir are usually searched for by their own town name. Run these checks:
- Consistent details: Footer, contact page and profile show the same address, phone number and opening hours.
- Real service area: List only towns you actually serve; businesses that visit customers can hide their address and define a service area instead.
- No doorway pages: Write a few pages with genuine local information instead of twenty copies where only the district name changes.
- Seasonal hours: Update special opening hours in the profile when a ski season opens or closes.
A hotel on the Palandöken slopes can use the word naturally, since it names both the district and the ski area. It should not create a page for Kandilli if it has no property there. For planned work across profile, content and technical settings, see our SEO service.
07English, Russian or German: When a Second Language Pays Off
A second language pays off when a real group of customers asks questions in it; otherwise it becomes a set of outdated pages that erodes trust. For Erzurum, the answer depends on who buys from you.
- Ski hotels: If you work with operators bringing international ski groups, English is the base; if guests write to you in Russian, a Russian version deserves a look.
- Regional goods: An Oltu stone workshop shipping abroad needs English product pages with sizes, materials and shipping terms.
- Families abroad: Businesses serving families from Erzurum who live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland may benefit from a German contact page.
- Local services: A café or tutoring center serving students rarely needs a second language at launch.
If you add a language, avoid automatic translation widgets. Publish each version on its own URL with reviewed text, and use hreflang annotations in which every version references itself and all the others; without that reciprocity, Google may not pair the versions correctly.
Name the person who keeps each language current before launch. When ski packages change in Turkish but stay old in English, foreign guests arrive with the wrong expectations. We cover the setup in detail on our multilingual website page.
08Speed, Hosting and Security in Practice
Many visitors open an Erzurum site on a phone, often on the road, on the slopes or in a village with a weak signal, so speed is a basic requirement. Google's Core Web Vitals give clear targets at the 75th percentile: LCP, the time until the largest element appears, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, the delay before the page reacts to a tap, at 200 milliseconds or less; CLS, how much the layout jumps while loading, at 0.1 or less.
Heavy photos are the usual culprit on hotel and food sites. An uncompressed gallery of snowy panoramas or cheese wheels can leave the first screen blank for seconds. Ask for these measures:
- Images: Modern formats such as WebP, sizes matched to the screen and lazy loading for images further down the page.
- Hosting: A server close to Turkish visitors, a current PHP version and daily backups kept off the server.
- Security: An SSL certificate, updated plugins, limited login attempts and two step verification for the admin panel.
- Forms: Spam protection, with every enquiry delivered to both e-mail and the admin panel.
Traffic can rise sharply when the season opens, so ask how the hosting plan behaves under that load. You can measure how your current site performs on a phone with our mobile friendly test; bring the result to our first call.
09Erzurum Sectors and the Pages They Need
Four types of business come up again and again in Erzurum, and each needs its own page structure; moving a template from one to another rarely works.
- Ski hotels and guesthouses: Room types, walking or shuttle distance to the lifts, ski storage, ski school details and a group form for training camps outside the season. Our hotel website guide explains room pages in depth.
- Breeders, dairies and meat producers: Barn and pasture photos, breeds and feeding routine, veterinary checks, delivery options for the sacrifice season and a separate wholesale form. The framework is on our farm business website page.
- Oltu stone workshops: Where the stone is mined, the stages of the craft, the true size of each piece, any silver used, plus the shop address in the Taşhan and its hours.
- Services for the student city: Enrollment dates, directions to campus, a short form that works with one hand and a WhatsApp button.
One principle runs through all four: whatever a buyer would ask on the phone should already be on the site. A tour operator wants lift distances, a retail chain wants supply capacity, a student wants enrollment dates. If finding that takes more than three taps, the visitor moves on.
10Legal Basics: KVKK, Cookies and Online Sales
Any Erzurum site that collects personal data through forms or bookings must publish the information notice required by Article 10 of KVKK, Turkey's data protection law No. 6698. The notice explains what data you process, why, who receives it and what rights the person has, and it should be linked next to each form.
For businesses that sell or take bookings online, this checklist covers the essentials:
- Information notice: Written for your own processes and placed under each form; a notice copied from another site describes someone else's business.
- Cookie consent: Non essential analytics and advertising cookies should not run before the visitor agrees; for guests from the European Economic Area, Google also requires consent mode for measurement and personalized ads.
- Distance sales texts: Preliminary information, the sales contract, and return and withdrawal terms must appear before the payment step.
- Food products: If you ship cheese, butter or meat, clarify cold chain, labeling and how withdrawal rights apply with your adviser and the provincial agriculture directorate.
- Geographical indications: Show the indication wording or emblem only when your right to use it is documented.
With 27 registered geographical indications for Erzurum as of June 2022, that last point comes up often. If your right is not settled, describe the product by its regional character without claiming the registration. Cart, payment and shipping setup is handled as a separate scope under our e-commerce service.
11Redesigning Without Losing Rankings
If your current site already ranks, a redesign keeps that position by redirecting every valuable old URL to a matching new one. Traffic drops after a relaunch usually come from broken links and forgotten redirects, not from the design.
- Inventory: List every URL from the old site, from Search Console and from pages that receive outside links.
- Value marking: Flag pages that bring visits, links or enquiries; last winter's ski package page is a typical example.
- Mapping: Point each old URL to its closest new page with a permanent 301 redirect, never everything to the homepage.
- Content transfer: Carry over titles and text that already rank and improve them, rather than starting from scratch.
- Monitoring: Submit the new sitemap and watch Search Console for errors in the following weeks.
Timing matters for seasonal businesses. Relaunching a ski hotel site in mid December puts the busiest booking weeks at risk; plan the switch for spring or summer. Keeping last year's package page at the same address and updating it preserves its search history.
One technical trap: Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page blocked in robots.txt, so a page you want out of the index must stay crawlable. The full roadmap is on our website redesign page.
12Common Mistakes on Erzurum Business Sites
The same handful of mistakes appears on many Erzurum business sites, and most are easy to fix once spotted.
- Deleting winter packages after the season: The page and its search history disappear. Instead, keep the page, add a note that next season's packages are coming and update it in autumn.
- Relying on social media alone: A wholesale buyer cannot find certificates or capacity on Instagram. Instead, send social followers to a site that holds documents and the enquiry form.
- Stock photos from other mountains: Alpine images mislead guests. Instead, use photos of your own property, the real Palandöken views and your actual products.
- Phone number only inside an image: It cannot be tapped or found by search. Instead, add a click to call text number and a WhatsApp button.
- No travel information: First time visitors do not know how to get from the airport. Instead, collect transfers, shuttles and winter tire advice on one page.
- Using an indication emblem without permission: This can conflict with the registration holder's rules. Instead, confirm your right first, then place the emblem.
13What Drives the Budget
Scope, not location, sets the budget, so a business in Erzurum works with the same packages as one anywhere else in Turkey. These decisions move the effort most:
- Number and variety of pages: A hotel with six room types and four season packages is a different workload from a single page café site.
- Languages: Each extra language means translation, review and ongoing updates.
- Online sales: Cart, payment, shipping options and stock management form a separate scope from a presentation site.
- Integrations: Connecting a booking engine, channel manager or accounting software adds time.
- Content production: Professional photography and newly written copy can be part of the project or come from you.
Prioritizing is the way to use the budget well. A hotel racing the ski season can launch with room and enquiry pages first and add the English version and articles in a second phase. A cheese producer can start with presentation and a wholesale form and plan online sales for the following season.
Ask for each item to be listed separately in the quote, so you can trim the scope to your priorities.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The first three months after launch decide whether the site turns into a source of enquiries. Plan them around your season:
- Month one: Confirm that calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks are tracked as conversions, that Search Console shows no indexing errors, and that the Business Profile matches the site.
- Month two: Review which searches and countries bring visitors; if ski queries come mainly from Istanbul, Ankara or abroad, strengthen the travel page for those starting points.
- Month three: Compare enquiries by source and language, write the missing pages and draft the content plan for next season.
When deciding, ask one question: does my site give my most valuable customer what they need within three taps? If the answer is no, it is time for a new site or a thorough redesign.
Fixed price packages and online purchase are listed in the pricing section of our web design page; second languages, online sales and custom development are quoted in writing. To begin, book a video call in English or Turkish through our contact page and bring your season calendar, your most important customer group and your current site address. We will listen to your Erzurum business and reply with a written scope.
