This guide is for companies that sell from, buy in or set up shop in Solingen: suppliers serving the metal industry, knife and kitchenware brands, international firms with a sales office in the Bergisches Land, and founders who moved here from abroad. A web design Solingen project is rarely about a pretty homepage. It is about proving quality and origin to a buyer who has never visited, while meeting German legal rules from the first day.
We, Talha Aslan and team, ordered the decisions the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something to check, decide or ask an agency. Legal notes are general information; please have your texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) before launch.
01What a website has to do in Solingen's economy
In Solingen, a website has to back up a reputation that the city name already promises abroad. According to Destatis, 165,626 people lived in Solingen on 31 December 2024. Figures compiled by the Bergische IHK show 6,450 people working in metal product manufacturing, with 50.1 percent of industrial turnover earned abroad; on 30 June 2025, cutlery and cutting tool production alone employed 2,740 people with social insurance.
That export share changes who reads your site. A purchasing manager in Milan or Chicago may judge your company entirely from its pages, without a call. Decide in writing which jobs the site must do first:
- Qualify buyers abroad: capabilities, materials, tolerances, certificates and minimum order quantities that a buyer can check before making contact.
- Prove origin: production steps, workshop photos and a clear statement of where each product is made and finished.
- Serve local customers: hours, directions and a click to call button for people in Ohligs, Wald or Höhscheid.
- Recruit: a careers page for skilled trades and engineering roles, readable on a phone in a few minutes.
The first item on your list decides the first screen on mobile, the menu order and what you measure later. Writing it down also gives you a yardstick for every feature request that comes up during design.
02Search intent in Solingen: districts, products and visitors
People search Solingen in three very different ways, and each one needs its own type of page. Locals often use the names of the towns that merged in 1929, international buyers search for products, and day visitors search for sights and places to eat.
- Former town names: "Zahnarzt Ohligs", "Steuerberater Gräfrath" or "Physiotherapie Burg". Map results dominate; your site needs a consistent address, hours and phone number.
- Product searches: "Solingen knife", "kitchen knife Solingen" in English and "Solinger Messer kaufen" in German. Each language needs its own product pages, not a translated widget.
- B2B searches: "precision grinding supplier Germany" or "stamping parts NRW", typed by buyers who never mention Solingen at all. Detailed capability pages answer them.
- Visitor searches: Schloss Burg, the Müngstener Brücke and the Deutsches Klingenmuseum in Gräfrath draw people who look for cafés, guided tours and parking, mostly on weekends.
For web design Solingen work, this split matters more than design style. Try a quick test before you plan any pages. Type your five most important search terms on a phone, once with a district name and once in English without a place name, and note what ranks first: maps, ads, directories or company sites. That list tells you which pages to build first.
03Choosing a partner outside Germany: an online process done right
Working with a team abroad succeeds when every agreement is written down and every draft is visible; distance itself is rarely the issue. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul and run projects in Germany fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of German time in summer and two hours in winter, so working hours overlap for most of the day.
Ask every agency the same questions and request written answers:
- Video calls: who leads them, how often, and are decisions summarized in writing afterwards.
- Written scope: which pages, languages, forms and integrations are included, and who supplies text and photos.
- Live preview: can you test drafts on your own phone through a link at each stage.
- German content: who writes or edits the German pages, and how legal texts are handled.
- After launch: who updates the system, and how fast does someone answer when a form stops working.
For web design Solingen projects, a local desk does not replace clear answers to these points. Look at finished work as well: our live projects show the kinds of structures we build, from catalog sites to multi page company sites.
04Ownership and access: domain, hosting, code and accounts
Every key to your website should be registered to your company, with the agency added only as an authorized user. International firms opening a German entity often find that the .de domain sits in a former consultant's account, which turns a simple change into weeks of emails.
- Domain: register the .de domain in your company's name through a registrar account you control.
- Hosting: choose a data center inside the EU, sign the contract yourself and conclude a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO).
- Code and content: ask for a full backup at handover, admin access to the CMS and license details for any paid plugin.
- Google accounts: Search Console, Analytics and the Business Profile belong to your company account; the agency gets user access.
- E-mail: use addresses on your own domain so quotes and invoices do not leave from personal inboxes.
On handover day, request a one page access sheet listing each service, account owner and renewal date. It saves time when your headquarters changes agencies or audits vendors. If a web design Solingen proposal does not mention these items, ask for them to be added before you sign.
05Project process step by step, fully online
A Solingen website can be planned, built and launched without a single trip, as long as each step ends with a written result. This sequence keeps decisions from being reopened later.
- Discovery call: on video we discuss your buyers, markets, competitors and the first job of the site.
- Written scope: page list, languages, forms, content responsibilities and timeline go into one document.
- Content and photos: German and English texts are prepared; for a workshop we provide a shot list covering machines, materials and finishing steps.
- Design and preview: drafts open on a live link, you test them on your phone, and changes are tracked in our CRM.
- Legal pages and measurement: Impressum, privacy policy, cookie consent and consent based analytics are set up.
- Launch and training: the site goes live and we walk your team through the editor on a screen share.
Everything happens on screen; if you travel to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our office in Ataşehir, but no stage depends on it. To keep the project moving, name one decision maker on your side and agree on a reply time for approvals. The full scope of the service is described on our web design service page.
06Local SEO in Solingen: Business Profile, districts and directories
Map visibility starts with a complete Google Business Profile that matches your website exactly. The business name must match your real world name; Google's guidelines do not allow added keywords. Businesses that serve customers at their location can hide the address and define a service area instead.
A practical checklist for Solingen:
- Category: pick the primary category that matches your main service; "Metal working shop" and "Tool grinding service" reach different searches.
- Districts: mention the areas you really serve in natural sentences, for example customers from Aufderhöhe, Merscheid and Ohligs, and skip near identical district pages.
- German directories: check that Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and the directories of your industry list the same name, address and phone.
- Reviews: send a short review link after each completed job and reply calmly to every review, including critical ones.
If customers come from Haan, Wuppertal or Remscheid, one honest paragraph about your service area is enough. The Wuppertal page covers the neighboring market in the same region. For continuous profile and content work, see our SEO service.
07Languages: German first, English and Turkish where they pay off
German should be the main language for almost every Solingen business, with English or Turkish added for audiences you can name. Authorities, banks, most local customers and many suppliers read German, and the Impressum and privacy policy are prepared in German.
English pays off for exporters, companies with international headquarters and visitor businesses near Schloss Burg. A buyer abroad expects product data, technical tables, delivery terms and a contact person in English. Turkish makes sense for service businesses whose customers ask detailed questions before deciding, such as insurance, property or vehicle services. Follow these rules whichever languages you add:
- Separate URLs: every language version gets its own pages; avoid automatic translation plugins.
- hreflang: each version references the others and itself, which tells Google which page serves which language. Our hreflang generator builds the tags.
- Language switch: show a visible switch instead of forcing redirects based on browser language.
- Equal depth: if the English catalog has fifty products, the German one should not have twenty.
A good starting point is to translate only the pages that buyers abroad actually request: products, capabilities, quality and contact. The structure behind it is explained on our multilingual website page.
08Speed, hosting and security
A fast site keeps the attention of buyers on the move and of Solingen's many commuters. According to IT.NRW, 37,936 people commuted out of Solingen for work in 2024 and 23,314 commuted in; many of them look up services on a phone during a train ride or a break.
Google's Core Web Vitals give concrete targets. Measured at the 75th percentile of visits, these values count as good:
- LCP: how long the largest visible element takes to load; 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP: how quickly the page responds to a tap or click; 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS: how much the layout shifts while loading; 0.1 or less.
Knife and tool sites rely on close up product photography, which is often the heaviest part of a page. Convert images to modern formats such as WebP, serve sizes that fit the screen and load images below the first screen later. Host fonts on your own server instead of loading them from Google; it is faster and avoids a known data protection issue in Germany.
On security, an SSL certificate, regular updates, daily backups, two step login for the CMS and spam protection on forms should be standard. Remove old user accounts when staff or agencies change.
09Sector examples specific to Solingen
Solingen's economy produces very different website needs, so one template rarely fits two businesses here. The examples below follow the city's industries and visitor attractions.
- Contract grinding and finishing: machine list, materials handled, batch sizes, quality certificates and a quote form that accepts drawings. The industrial company website page outlines this structure.
- Knife and kitchenware brands: product pages with steel, handle material, hardness and care advice, plus a page that explains the making of each line.
- Sharpening and repair services: accepted items, mail in process, turnaround information and a shop address with hours.
- International sales offices: a German entity site that matches the global brand but carries its own Impressum, local contacts and German job ads.
- Cafés and guesthouses near Burg and Müngsten: menu or room information, directions, parking and a short English summary for visitors.
Whatever the business, good web design Solingen practice gives each page a single action: call, request a quote, book or get directions. Before writing a page, note in one verb what the visitor should do next, and build the layout around that verb.
10Legal basics for a website in Germany
A business website in Germany follows German rules even when the parent company sits elsewhere; a privacy page written for another market is not enough. The points below are general information, not legal advice.
- Impressum: required for business websites under § 5 DDG, with company name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register and VAT information.
- Privacy policy: required under the GDPR whenever personal data is processed; forms, maps and analytics tools must be named.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies may only run after consent, and rejecting should be as easy as accepting.
- Online shops: the order button must state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers need cancellation information. The Accessibility Act (BFSG) has applied to many consumer facing shops since 28 June 2025; check whether it applies to you.
- The Solingen name: a regulation dated 16 December 1994 reserves it for cutting products essentially processed and finished in Solingen or Haan. Check this before using origin claims in product copy.
Update your privacy policy and cookie list whenever you add a new form, map or tracking tool. If you plan to sell online, shop setup, payment and shipping flows are covered by our e-commerce service.
11Relaunch without losing rankings
The biggest risk in a relaunch is that addresses Google already knows disappear without a redirect. On an older web design Solingen site, a few product or service pages may quietly bring most of the enquiries; if the new structure ignores them, traffic can drop for months.
- Inventory: list every URL of the current site and the pages that earn clicks in Search Console.
- Mapping: assign each old URL a matching new page, or the closest topic if no match exists.
- 301 redirects: on launch day, connect every old URL to its new address with a permanent redirect.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap in Search Console and review coverage and error reports in the first weeks.
One technical trap deserves attention. Blocking a staging site in robots.txt does not keep it out of the index, because Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page it is not allowed to crawl. Protect staging with a password, or leave it crawlable with noindex.
A relaunch is also a good moment to remove outdated services and duplicate posts, but always decide the redirect target before deleting a page that still gets visits.
12Common mistakes on Solingen business websites
The same handful of mistakes appears on many Solingen sites, and most can be fixed within days. Check your own site against this list.
- English only: an international group site with no German pages misses local customers and applicants. Instead, add German versions of the key product, career and contact pages.
- Vague origin claims: using the Solingen name without explaining where products are made and finished. Instead, describe the production steps and check the regulation.
- Analytics before consent: a cookie banner that appears while tracking already runs in the background. Instead, set up consent mode and test it properly.
- PDF catalogs only: product data locked in large files that search engines and phones handle poorly. Instead, publish key products as pages and keep the PDF as a download.
- District doorway pages: copies for Ohligs, Wald and Gräfrath with only the name changed. Instead, write one service area section.
- Hidden contact: a phone number inside an image or only in the footer. Instead, place a click to call button at the top of every page.
If two or more of these apply, fixing the current site may be the right first step before planning a full redesign.
13Budget drivers without numbers
Scope sets the cost of a website, not the city; a web design Solingen quote follows the same logic as a quote anywhere else. When comparing offers, look at these drivers:
- Languages: each extra language means new copy, review and maintenance; full versions cost more than selected pages.
- Catalog size: ten service pages and a catalog of two hundred products are different projects.
- Online sales: payment, shipping, stock and the legal order process form a separate layer.
- Integrations: connections to an ERP, a booking tool or a distributor portal add work.
- Content support: whether you provide texts and photos or need writing and a shoot plan.
Compare what maintenance after launch includes, not just the total. A quote that looks lean but bills every small change separately can cost more over two years. Phasing helps: launch the German core and key products first, then add English pages and the full catalog in a second step. Ask each agency whether adding a language later would force a rebuild.
14The first 90 days and your next step
The three months after launch show what works, so plan them as carefully as the build. A simple calendar is enough:
- Days 1 to 30: check indexing in Search Console, compare Business Profile details with the site again and send a test enquiry through every form.
- Days 31 to 60: review which queries bring visitors; strengthen weak English or German pages with the questions buyers actually ask.
- Days 61 to 90: count calls, forms and e-mails by source, improve the page that brings the most enquiries and merge pages that get no visits.
If you are unsure where to start, fixed scope packages make the first decision easier: our web design packages and pricing page shows what each one includes. Multiple languages, an online shop or an industrial catalog are priced through a written quote.
Tell us briefly about your products, your buyers and the languages you need. Write to us through the contact form; we will set up a video call and send you a written scope and quote.
