This guide is for companies in Paderborn that are planning a new website or replacing one that no longer fits: software firms, engineering suppliers, university spinoffs, international teams and the service businesses that work around them. Most decisions in a web design Paderborn project are made before anyone opens a design file, and they concern audience, language, legal duties and who owns what.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered the questions the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends in something you can check, decide or ask any agency, whether you work with us or not.
01What a Website Must Do in Paderborn's Economy
In Paderborn a company website is judged by an unusually technical audience, so clarity and precision matter more than decoration. Destatis counted 156,378 residents at the end of 2024, and the economic development agency WFG Paderborn reports more than 85,000 employees subject to social insurance in the city. Many of them work at software and engineering employers such as dSPACE, Diebold Nixdorf, Benteler or Lödige, and they evaluate other companies the way they evaluate a specification.
That has a practical consequence. Before any design work, write down the one or two jobs the site must do first. For Paderborn companies these are the usual candidates:
- Win a technical buyer: product data, certifications and a quote path that a purchasing engineer can use without a phone call.
- Recruit: career pages that convince a graduate or an experienced developer to apply, possibly before they speak German.
- Explain a product: for software firms and spinoffs, a clear account of the problem solved, who it is for and how to try it.
- Serve local customers: opening hours, directions and a phone number that works with one tap, for practices, shops and trades.
The job you rank first decides what appears on the first mobile screen and what the main navigation leads to. The second job gets a clear section further down. A homepage that tries to serve all four equally tends to serve none of them well, and in a city where many visitors are engineers, vagueness is noticed quickly.
02Who Searches Paderborn, and in Which Language
Search behaviour in Paderborn splits into three groups, and each needs its own type of page. Local residents search briefly and urgently, business buyers search in technical terms, and the university community often searches in English on a phone.
- Local searches: queries like "Zahnarzt Schloß Neuhaus", "Physiotherapie Elsen" or "Fahrradreparatur Paderborn" mostly trigger map results. Your page needs an address, opening hours and a tappable number.
- B2B searches: a buyer types a component name, a process or a standard, often in English, sometimes with no city at all. Here detailed product or service pages with downloadable documents decide.
- University searches: Paderborn University had 16,844 students in the winter semester that began in October 2024, according to provisional IT.NRW figures. Students and researchers search for housing, services and employers, frequently in English.
- Libori week: during the nine day festival each summer, around 150 fairground businesses set up on the Liboriberg and the city centre fills with visitors searching for what is open nearby.
Run a quick test. Type your five most important search terms into a phone, once in German and once in English, and note what appears at the top: maps, directories, job portals or competitor sites. That list tells you which pages you are missing.
The same applies when you search for an agency. A query for web design Paderborn mostly shows local firms; whether a local address matters for your project is the subject of the next section.
03Hiring a Web Team Based Outside Germany
A partner without an office in Paderborn works well when the process is written down, visible and easy to reach. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and projects in Germany run fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours in winter, so most of the working day overlaps.
Ask every agency on your shortlist the same questions and get the answers in writing:
- Calls: who leads them, in which language, and is there a written summary of decisions after each one?
- Scope: does the proposal list pages, languages, features, the number of revision rounds and what is explicitly excluded?
- Live preview: can you open the work in progress on a protected staging address at any time, on your own devices?
- German copy: who writes or reviews the German pages, and who checks the formal tone and your industry's terminology?
- Cover: how quickly are questions answered, and who takes over when the project lead is away?
Judge references live rather than as screenshots: open them on your phone, submit a form, tap the number. Our work so far is in Türkiye and listed with addresses on our references page; apply the same tests to it. One habit also matters on the client side: keep every decision in one written channel, so approvals do not scatter across chat, phone and e-mail.
04Domain, EU Hosting, Code and Logins You Own
Every part of the website should be registered to your company from day one. This protects you if you change agency, sell the business or part ways with a cofounder, and it is easy to arrange at the start and hard to fix later.
- Domain: register the .de domain, and the .com if you sell abroad, through a registrar in your company's name, with the login held by you.
- Hosting: choose servers inside the EU and sign a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO in German) with the host.
- Code and content: make the proposal state that source files, images and texts are handed over to you.
- Accounts: own Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics yourself, and add the agency as a user only.
- E-mail: make sure company mailboxes run on your domain and that you hold the admin access.
Before signing, ask one question: "If I want to move to another provider tomorrow, what do I receive and how quickly?" A clear answer is a good sign. For a spinoff, add one more point: if the site was set up during a university project, check that the domain was not registered to a student or a chair, and transfer it to the new company before launch.
Store all credentials in a password manager that at least two people in the company can open.
05The Remote Project, Step by Step
For a Paderborn company the whole project runs through video calls, written documents and a live preview. We schedule calls around your working hours and hold them in English or German, whichever your team prefers.
- Kickoff call: you describe products, customers, competitors and hiring plans; we agree which pages exist in which language.
- Written scope: page list, languages, forms, integrations and milestones go into the proposal, including who supplies the Impressum details.
- Design round: the homepage and one product or service page are presented on screen share; feedback goes into a written list.
- Build and preview: the site grows on a staging address, and you follow progress in our CRM.
- Testing and launch: forms, consent banner, speed and language links are tested, then the site moves to your domain.
- Handover: a recorded training session shows your team how to add products, jobs and news.
If you prefer to meet in person and travel through Istanbul, you are welcome at our office in Ataşehir; it is entirely optional. The full scope of our web design service is described on its own page.
You can speed things up by preparing for the kickoff: your logo files, the current site address, two or three sites you admire, product data in whatever form it exists, and the five questions customers or candidates ask most often.
06Local Search from Schloß Neuhaus to the Kreis
Local visibility in Paderborn starts with a complete Google Business Profile that matches your website exactly. The business name in the profile must be your real world name without added keywords; service area businesses such as trades or cleaning firms may hide their address and define the area they serve instead.
Name only the districts you genuinely serve. Besides the city centre, people search for Schloß Neuhaus, Elsen, Sande, Wewer, Marienloh, Sennelager or Neuenbeken by name, and many customers come from towns in the Kreis such as Delbrück, Salzkotten, Bad Lippspringe, Hövelhof or Borchen. Describe that area in a paragraph on the relevant service page; cloned pages for every town are treated as thin content.
- Consistent data: name, address, phone and hours should be identical on the site, the profile, Gelbe Seiten and Das Örtliche.
- Categories: pick the primary category for your core business and add secondary ones only for services you actually offer.
- Reviews: ask after a completed job with a short link, and reply calmly to every review, including critical ones.
- Photos: upload real pictures of the premises, the team and finished work, not stock images.
B2B firms benefit as well: a profile with correct opening hours and a photo of the entrance helps the visiting engineer who is trying to find your gate in an industrial area. If you want ongoing local work, we handle it as part of our SEO service.
07German First, English Next, Turkish When It Pays
For most Paderborn companies German is the main language, because customers, authorities, banks and many partners read German first. The legal pages, Impressum and privacy policy, are prepared in German in any case. English becomes essential as soon as you sell abroad or recruit people who do not speak German yet.
- English leads: when buyers and candidates are mostly international, as with many software products; German then covers the key pages.
- German leads: when you sell to German Mittelstand customers; English adds product, company and career pages.
- Turkish: when a noticeable part of your local customers speak Turkish, for example at an insurance agency or a care service.
- Wait: when nobody can keep a second language current; an outdated version does more harm than none.
Each language needs its own URLs, and pages are connected with hreflang annotations, where every version references the others and itself. You can check the markup with our hreflang generator. An automatic translation widget is no substitute; translated product data with wrong technical terms costs credibility with exactly the engineers you want to reach. The thinking behind a multilingual website is explained on its own page.
08Speed, Hosting and Security Under German Rules
Speed is a design decision, and in Paderborn the first visit is often on a phone between meetings or on campus. Google's Core Web Vitals count as good at the 75th percentile when LCP, the time until the largest content element loads, is 2.5 seconds or less, INP, the response time to interactions, is 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS, the amount of unexpected layout shift, is 0.1 or less.
- Images and data sheets: serve images in modern formats at the displayed size, and keep PDF downloads compressed and clearly labelled with file size.
- Fonts: host fonts on your own server; in January 2022 the Munich Regional Court (LG München I) awarded damages over Google Fonts loaded from Google servers without consent.
- Hosting: EU servers, a current PHP version, automatic backups and a documented restore process.
- Security: TLS certificates, updated components, strong passwords and two factor login for the admin area.
- Forms: invisible spam protection rather than puzzles that frustrate real applicants.
Before adding a new element, such as a background video, a chat widget or a social media feed, ask what it gives the visitor. Most slow sites were fast at launch and grew slow through such additions. Test your site on a phone over mobile data as well, not only on the office connection.
09Sector Examples Shaped by Paderborn
In web design Paderborn work, the city's mix of software, engineering and research produces a few recurring website types, each with its own priorities. The examples below are general advice; every site still needs to be built around its own customers.
- Software and SaaS products: feature pages written around use cases, a demo request, documentation links, pricing logic you control and a careers area; the SaaS website page goes deeper.
- Machinery and component suppliers: product families, filterable technical attributes, data sheets and a request for quote form in German and English; see the catalogue website page.
- Research spinoffs: a precise problem and solution story, team and advisory pages, publications or patents where relevant, and contact paths for investors and pilot customers.
- Engineering services and consultancies: project types, industries served, certifications and named contacts, often with an English version for international clients.
- Health and care services: service descriptions, booking, directions and a clear privacy policy, especially where forms touch health data.
For every page, ask whether a visitor knows afterwards what to do next, by when and how. If not, the gap is usually a missing process explanation, a missing document or a vague call to action, rarely the colour scheme.
10German Legal Basics Every Site Needs
A business website in Germany follows German rules, even when the company is run by an international team in English. The points below are general information; have your texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: under § 5 DDG, the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, business sites must provide company name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register entry and VAT number, easy to reach from every page. Regulated professions add their chamber and professional rules.
- Privacy policy: required under the GDPR as soon as forms, booking tools, applicant systems or analytics process personal data; service providers need an Art. 28 agreement.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only run after consent, and rejecting must be as easy as accepting.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) covers many consumer facing online shops and services. Micro enterprises offering services, with fewer than 10 staff and at most 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet, are exempt; check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: the order button must state the payment obligation clearly under § 312j BGB, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers receive withdrawal information.
We build the technical side and test before launch, with browser developer tools, that no tracking starts before consent is given.
11Relaunching Without Losing Search Rankings
When a site that has been live for years is rebuilt, the main risk is that addresses Google already knows disappear. However good the new design, unredirected pages send visitors and search engines to error pages, and visibility built over years can drop.
- Inventory: list every current URL, the pages with most impressions in Search Console and the pages that receive external links, including old product and job pages.
- Mapping: assign each old URL its counterpart on the new site; pages without one go to the closest topic. Our redirect mapping tool speeds up this step.
- Permanent redirects: activate 301 redirects on launch day and avoid redirect chains.
- Indexing settings: keep staging on noindex and remove it at launch; a page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex read by Google.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap and watch the indexing report closely during the first weeks.
Update the website link in your Business Profile and in directories as well. Avoid launching right before Libori or a major trade fair your buyers attend; a quiet week leaves time to fix what testing missed. A relaunch is also the moment to merge or retire outdated news, discontinued products and expired job ads instead of carrying them over.
12Mistakes Common on Paderborn Company Sites
Before writing a web design Paderborn brief, check your current site for the problems below; they appear on many company sites, and most are straightforward to fix. Each item below names the mistake and the better alternative.
- German only careers page: international developers cannot follow it; add English job pages with relocation basics and a short application path.
- Product data locked in PDFs: search engines and buyers on phones struggle with it; put key attributes on HTML pages and keep the PDF as a download.
- Tracking before consent: analytics and ad tags fire before the banner is answered; connect every tool to the consent system.
- Machine translated English: wrong technical terms undermine credibility with engineers; have English product pages written or reviewed by someone who knows the field.
- Stale opening hours: Libori and holiday hours stay outdated on site and profile; set a calendar reminder a few weeks ahead.
- A cloned page for every town: Delbrück, Salzkotten and Hövelhof get identical text; describe the service area honestly on one page.
Mark each point against your current site. If more than two apply, plan a structured revision or a relaunch; a single issue can usually be fixed on the existing site in a short session.
13What Drives the Budget
The cost of a web design Paderborn project depends on your decisions, not on the location; our prices are the same in every city. Knowing the drivers in advance makes proposals comparable and keeps the scope honest.
- Languages: every extra language means new copy, review and hreflang setup; starting English with the key pages keeps it manageable.
- Volume of content: whether you supply texts and product data or we prepare them makes a substantial difference.
- Catalogue depth: the number of product families, attributes, filters and downloadable documents shapes the build.
- Integrations: applicant tracking, CRM, booking or ERP connections add planning and testing.
- Online shop: payment methods, shipping rules and German order requirements need separate planning.
- Ongoing care: the scope of updates, backups and content support affects the total.
Ask every agency to quote the same page list, otherwise the numbers cannot be compared. Phasing helps too: launch German and English core pages with the legal setup first, then add the catalogue or further languages once real data comes in. Our fixed packages are listed in the pricing section.
14Your First 90 Days and Next Step
Launch is the start of the useful phase; the first three months show whether the site brings enquiries and applications. Plan them in small, measurable steps.
- Weeks one and two: test every form and phone link, and check Search Console for crawl or indexing errors.
- First month: complete the Business Profile, ask first customers for reviews, align directory entries.
- Second month: review which pages get visits and which search terms bring them; add answers to questions people still ask by e-mail.
- Third month: based on the data, add product pages, English content or a seasonal page.
Keep measurement simple. Once a month, look at three figures: enquiries from forms and calls, applications, and the three most visited pages. If enquiries stay flat, the cause is usually missing information or a page aimed at the wrong audience, not the design.
To start your web design Paderborn project, a short video call is enough. Tell us in English or German what you sell and to whom; we agree on languages, pages and legal requirements and send back a written scope and quote. You can reach us through our contact page.
