In short

Web design in Izmir has to serve two audiences: local customers searching in Turkish and buyers abroad searching in English or German. According to TÜİK, Izmir produced 5.7% of Turkey's GDP in 2024, and Ministry of Trade data shows 9.3% of Turkey's exports by production location came from Izmir in 2023. Talha Aslan and team run Izmir projects online, with a written scope and progress tracked in our CRM.

Izmir's business profile

What should a website do for a business in Izmir?

According to TÜİK's 2024 provincial GDP data, Izmir is Turkey's third largest economy after Istanbul and Ankara. Its weight in manufacturing and exports puts four jobs on a website.

Izmir's share of Turkey's economyTÜİK, GDP by province 2024; Ministry of Trade, exports by province of activity 2023
  • Share of GDP (2024)5.7%
  • Share of exports, by production location (2023)9.3%

Buyers are often abroad

In the Ministry of Trade's export data by production location, Izmir ranked third in 2023 with 9.3% of Turkey's exports; its largest markets were Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. A purchasing manager in Rotterdam or Chicago meets a supplier on its website first, and leaves without asking for a quote if product and capacity details are missing in English.

Technical buyers from industry

The same data shows mineral fuels, machinery, and iron and steel as Izmir's top export chapters in 2023. Industrial buyers look for specifications, certificates and capacity; the site has to replace the printed catalogue with clear, well structured product pages.

Port, logistics and trade

Izmir is a port city, and forwarders, warehouses and customs brokers serve clients who need to understand routes and services quickly. A separate page for each service and a short quote form make the difference for a foreign shipper comparing providers.

Tourism and local search

Hotels on the Aegean coast compete for guests who book from abroad, while clinics and service businesses in the city are found through district searches such as Bornova dentist. Both need a site and a Google Business Profile built around how people actually search.

How we work

With Izmir clients, the whole process runs online

We have no office, branch or team in Izmir, and we say so up front. With businesses in Izmir, and with their partners abroad, the whole project runs over video calls in English or Turkish, a written scope and our CRM, where content, images and approvals are shared. If you are in Istanbul and prefer to meet in person, we can host the meeting at our office at Nida Kule in Ataşehir.

Talha Aslan sets the strategy; design, development and content are handled by an experienced team. Before work starts, we put in writing which markets, which languages and which buyers the site is built for; for an Izmir exporter, that decision comes before any design.

  • Discovery and design approval over video call
  • Scope, schedule and deliverables in writing
  • Every step visible live in our CRM
  • No code before the design is approved
  • Meetings at our Ataşehir office in Istanbul if you wish

Process

From brief to launch in four steps

  1. Discovery and scope

We define your business, your audience and the site’s one-sentence job: who it sells what to, through which action. Scope and timeline are written from that answer.

  2. Design approval

The home page and key templates come to you as designs first; no code is written before your approval. We do not like surprises, and we do not cause them.

  3. Development

The approved design becomes fast, secure, maintainable code. You follow progress in the CRM and see every page in a staging environment before launch.

  4. Launch and measurement

The site goes live with analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking connected; panel training is given, first-year hosting and maintenance included.

In-depth guide

Web Design Izmir: Sites for Exporters, Ports and Aegean Business

Talha Aslan and teamLast updated: 15 min read

This guide is for companies in Izmir that sell abroad and for foreign companies that need a website for an Izmir subsidiary, supplier or partner. In both cases the site must work for a purchasing manager reading English in another time zone and for a local customer searching in Turkish on a phone.

Below we cover the decisions that shape web design in Izmir: search intent, export content, running the project remotely and the legal rules for visitors in Turkey, the EU and Germany.

What a Website Has to Do in Izmir's Economy

A website for an Izmir company usually has to sell to two markets at once, because the city's economy leans on production and exports. According to TÜİK's provincial GDP data, Izmir produced 5.7 percent of Turkey's GDP in 2024. Ministry of Trade figures by production location show that 9.3 percent of Turkey's exports came from Izmir in 2023.

Those numbers explain why a brochure site rarely works here. A manufacturer may earn most of its revenue abroad while hiring and local service happen in Turkish. Before anyone sketches a homepage, rank the jobs the site carries.

  • Win foreign buyers: product range, capacity, certificates and a quote request in the buyer's language.
  • Serve local customers: location, opening hours, phone and a clear route to the right department.
  • Support sales staff: pages your team can send after a trade fair instead of attaching heavy PDF catalogs.
  • Recruit: a careers page in Turkish that shows the plant, shifts and how to apply.
  • Reassure partners: company history, ownership, addresses and legal details that a compliance team can verify.

Keep the ranked list; navigation, languages and budget should all trace back to it.

Three Kinds of Search Intent Around Izmir

People reach Izmir businesses through three different searches, and each needs its own landing page; one generic homepage answers none of them well.

  • Local intent: someone in Bayraklı types a service plus a district name and wants a phone number, a map pin and opening hours within seconds.
  • Export B2B intent: a buyer in Hamburg searches for a product category, a material or a standard, often with words like manufacturer, supplier or OEM, and wants specifications before contact.
  • Tourism intent: a traveler compares stays in Çeşme or Urla, reads about rooms and the area, and decides whether to send an enquiry or book elsewhere.

The practical test is simple. Take the five searches that matter most to your revenue and, for each one, name the page that should rank and the action a visitor should take there. If two searches point to the same page with different actions, you need another page.

Export search wording differs by country; a German buyer may use a German product term your team only knows in English. Build titles and headings around the words that appear in real enquiries and purchase orders, not around a translation tool's guess.

Choosing a Partner Who Is Not in Your City

A web design partner outside Izmir works well when the online process is designed on purpose rather than improvised over scattered messages. Distance is rarely the problem; vague scope and missing feedback loops are.

When you compare agencies, from Izmir, Istanbul or abroad, judge how they run the work. Ask each candidate these questions and listen for concrete answers:

  • Will we receive a written scope that lists pages, languages, features and who supplies each piece of content?
  • Where can we see progress between meetings, and who on your side answers our questions?
  • Can meetings, documents and updates run in English for our partners abroad?
  • Which live sites can we open today that resemble what we need, such as export catalogs or service sites?
  • What happens if we want to move the site to another provider later?

Open the live work on our references page, and in any other agency's portfolio, on a phone. Check speed, how quote forms behave and whether language versions are real pages or a translation widget. Live work tells you more than a pitch deck.

For a foreign company managing an Izmir subsidiary, one more question matters: who approves content on each side. Name one decision maker in Izmir and one at headquarters, and write both names into the scope.

Ownership and Access From Day One

Your company should own every account the website depends on, settled before design starts. Ownership problems tend to surface years later, when a staff member leaves or a supplier relationship ends.

Make a short register and keep it with your company records. It should list each asset, the legal owner, the login holder and the renewal date:

  • Domain name: registered to the company, not to an employee or the agency, with renewal reminders going to a shared mailbox.
  • Hosting and backups: an account in your name, or a written handover plan if the agency hosts the first year.
  • Website admin: an administrator login for your company, plus separate user accounts for each editor.
  • Google accounts: Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile owned by a company account, with the agency added as a user.
  • Source and content: design files, texts, photos and translations delivered at launch.

Foreign parent companies often have a group policy for domains and analytics; share it at the start, because it decides which domain the Izmir site uses and who controls tracking. We hand over all admin access at launch so that nothing ties you to us.

The Project Process Step by Step, Fully Online

Work with businesses in Izmir runs fully online, through video calls, a written scope and our CRM, where every task and approval is visible. We have no office or team in Izmir; if you prefer to meet in person, we can do so at our office at Nida Kule in Ataşehir, Istanbul, but it is never required.

A typical project follows this order:

  1. Discovery call: we go through markets, languages, buyers and the ranked list of jobs the site must do.
  2. Written scope: pages, features, languages, content responsibilities and schedule are agreed in writing.
  3. Structure and wireframes: the page tree and the layout of key pages, such as a product page and the quote form, are approved first.
  4. Design approval: visual design is presented on a video call; no code is written before it is approved.
  5. Build and content: development runs in parallel with content collection, and each language is reviewed by someone who knows the product.
  6. Testing and launch: forms, tracking, speed and every language version are checked before the domain goes live.

The schedule depends heavily on content. Product data, certificates and photos come from teams busy with orders, so assign one person to collect them against deadlines that match the scope, especially before a trade fair or the tourist season.

Local SEO in Izmir Without Doorway Pages

Local visibility in Izmir comes mostly from an accurate Google Business Profile and honest service area information, not from dozens of near identical district pages. Search engines treat copy pages for every district as doorway pages, and they rarely convince a real customer.

Start with the profile. Google's guidelines require the business name to match the real world name, without added keywords, so a profile named after a district and a treatment instead of the clinic is a risk. A service area business that visits customers can hide its address and list the districts it covers instead.

On the site itself, these steps cover most local needs:

  • Show the same name, address and phone number on the site as on the profile, in the footer and on the contact page.
  • Name the districts you genuinely serve, such as Konak, Karşıyaka or Buca, in plain sentences on your service pages.
  • Create a separate district page only when you have something specific there: a branch, a team, a different schedule or real local projects.
  • Add a click to call button and a short form on mobile, because a customer searching nearby is often on a phone.

If you need ongoing local work, such as profile management, reviews and content, that runs better as a separate SEO service with monthly reporting than as a one time task inside the build.

Export Websites: Catalogs and Buyers Abroad

An export website succeeds when a foreign buyer can qualify you as a supplier without writing a single e-mail. The Ministry of Trade data lists Germany, the Netherlands and the United States as Izmir's largest export markets in 2023, and buyers there expect structured, verifiable information.

Replace the printed catalog with product pages that each answer the buyer's checklist. A useful product page for an industrial or food exporter usually includes:

  • Technical specifications in a consistent format, with units buyers in the target country use.
  • Certificates and standards, each with issuing body and validity, downloadable on the page.
  • Minimum order, packaging, capacity and typical lead time described in words your production team confirms.
  • A quote form that asks only what you need to reply: product, quantity, destination country and contact.

Language structure matters as much as content. Each language should live on its own URL, and the versions should be connected with hreflang, which tells Google about language and regional versions; each version must reference the others and itself. You can check an existing setup with our hreflang generator and read how we plan language versions on the multilingual website page.

Never publish raw machine translation for technical products. A wrong term on a specification line can cost a deal or create a liability. Have each language reviewed by someone who sells that product in that market.

Tourism and Hospitality on the Aegean Coast

Hotels, guesthouses and tour operators around Izmir need a site that turns lookers into direct enquiries, because guests from abroad compare many options before they decide. The site must offer what booking platforms cannot: detail, a direct contact and a clear picture of the place.

Focus the build on the questions a traveler asks before writing to you:

  • Rooms: one section per room type with size, beds, view and real photos taken in daylight.
  • Location: distance to the beach, the airport and the town center of Çeşme, Foça or Seferihisar, stated plainly.
  • Season: opening dates, what changes between high and low season and what is included.
  • Direct enquiry: a short form and a WhatsApp button that a guest can use in English from a phone.

Photos carry a hotel site and are also the main threat to its speed. Serve modern image formats sized to the screen, and test the gallery on a slow mobile connection.

For a seasonal business, timing is part of the plan. Launch well before guests start planning, so search engines have time to crawl the new pages.

Speed, Hosting and Security Basics

Speed and security are a baseline for buyers abroad, and Google measures speed with Core Web Vitals. Its "good" thresholds at the 75th percentile of visits are: LCP, which measures how quickly the main content loads, at 2.5 seconds or less; INP, which measures how quickly the page responds to a tap or click, at 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS, which measures how much the layout jumps, at 0.1 or less.

Heavy catalogs and galleries usually cause slow pages. Ask any provider how they handle images, fonts and third party scripts such as chat widgets, and check your current site with a mobile friendly test before the first call.

Security covers more than the padlock in the browser. Use this checklist:

  • A valid SSL certificate on every version of the domain, with all traffic redirected to HTTPS.
  • Regular updates for the content management system and plugins, with a named person responsible.
  • Daily backups stored away from the main server, plus a tested restore.
  • Separate accounts for each editor, removed when someone leaves.
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC records on your mail domain, so quotes sent to buyers abroad do not land in spam.

The mail point is often missed. You can test it in a minute with our SPF, DKIM and DMARC checker.

Legal Basics: KVKK, GDPR and the Impressum

An Izmir company that collects data from visitors in Turkey and the EU has to satisfy Turkish rules and, in many cases, European ones as well. This is a general overview, not legal advice; have your counsel review the final texts.

  • KVKK: Turkey's Law No. 6698 requires an information notice (aydınlatma metni, Article 10) wherever you collect personal data, including quote and contact forms.
  • Health data: under Article 6 of the same law, health data is special category data; clinics need stricter handling and explicit wording on forms.
  • GDPR reach: under Article 3(2), the GDPR applies to companies outside the EU when they offer goods or services to people in the EU or monitor their behavior there.
  • Cookies and ads: in the EU, consent is needed before non essential tracking, and Google requires consent mode for measurement and personalized advertising features for users in the European Economic Area.
  • Germany: a site aimed at German buyers needs an Impressum under § 5 DDG, and § 25 TDDDG requires consent for non essential cookies.

Two practical points follow. First, any tool that processes visitor data for you, such as a booking system or a form service, needs a data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR when EU data is involved. Second, regulated professions face extra rules; Turkish health providers, for example, are bound by the 2025 regulation on promotion in health services, which bans advertising of health services and allows before and after images only under strict consent, dating and warning conditions.

Sector Examples in General Terms

The right structure depends more on the sector than on the city, so picture the core pages before you brief anyone. These are typical patterns, not client stories.

  • Machinery manufacturer: product families, a page per model with specifications, a service and spare parts section and a quote form that asks for the machine serial number when relevant.
  • Food and agricultural exporter: product pages with origin, processing, packaging options and certificates, plus a page on traceability and harvest seasons.
  • Freight forwarder or customs broker: one page per service and per main route, with documents the client must prepare and a short quote form.
  • Textile supplier: fabric or product ranges, minimum order, sampling process and production capacity, written for buyers who source for brands.
  • Clinic serving international patients: treatment pages that explain who is not a suitable candidate, team qualifications and a contact flow in English and Turkish, as on a dental clinic website built within the health promotion rules.

If you sell directly online, for example olive oil or textiles to consumers abroad, the site becomes a shop with shipping, returns and payment rules per country. That is a different project, and our e-commerce service covers it separately.

Use these patterns as a starting checklist, and add what your salespeople explain on every first call.

Redesigning Without Losing Rankings

A redesign keeps its search traffic when every old URL that has value is mapped to a new one before launch. Most traffic losses after a relaunch come from broken links and missing redirects, not from the new design itself.

Follow this sequence when an existing Izmir site is being replaced:

  1. Export all URLs from the current site, Search Console and any old sitemap, including PDF catalogs that buyers link to.
  2. Mark the pages that bring traffic, links or enquiries; these must keep an equivalent page.
  3. Map each old URL to its closest new page and set permanent 301 redirects, never a blanket redirect to the homepage.
  4. Carry over titles, headings and content that already rank, then improve them rather than starting from a blank page.
  5. After launch, submit the new sitemap and watch Search Console for errors and crawl issues during the following weeks.

Watch one technical trap: a page blocked in robots.txt cannot have its noindex read by Google, so a page you want out of the index must stay crawlable and carry noindex. Remove any staging block at launch.

Redirect old English pages to their new English equivalents, never to the Turkish versions.

Common Mistakes and What to Do Instead

Most failed projects repeat a few avoidable mistakes; each comes here with its alternative.

  • One page for every audience: a homepage that tries to serve local customers, foreign buyers and job seekers at once. Instead, give each audience its own entry page and link to them clearly.
  • A translation widget instead of real languages: automatic translation layers are not indexed as separate versions and often mistranslate technical terms. Instead, build reviewed language versions on their own URLs with hreflang.
  • Stock photos of factories and teams: experienced buyers recognize them at once. Instead, photograph your own plant, people and products, even with a simple setup.
  • Catalogs only as PDF: a large PDF download hides products from search and frustrates phone users. Instead, publish each product as a page and offer the PDF as an extra.
  • Accounts in a former employee's name: the domain or analytics tied to a personal address. Instead, keep every account under the company and record it in the ownership register.
  • Launching right before a trade fair: no time to fix errors when buyers arrive. Instead, plan launch several weeks before the event and test every form with a real enquiry.

Budget Drivers, the First 90 Days and Next Steps

Cost is driven by scope, not by the city, so a company in Izmir works with the same packages as one anywhere else in Turkey. The factors that move the effort most are clear once the ranked list of jobs exists.

  • Number of languages and who writes and reviews each one.
  • Product range size and how much data needs structuring.
  • Integrations with booking systems, CRMs or ERP software.
  • Content creation such as product photography and new texts.
  • Ongoing work like SEO, ads or maintenance after launch.

The first 90 days after launch decide whether the site starts producing enquiries. In the first month, confirm that forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks are tracked as conversions and that Search Console shows no indexing errors. In the second month, review which searches and countries bring visitors and fill gaps in product or service pages. In the third month, compare enquiries by language and decide where to invest next.

Fixed packages are listed in the pricing section of our web design page; extra languages and custom work are quoted in writing once the scope is clear. To start, book a video call in English or Turkish through our contact page, and bring your ranked list of jobs and the five searches that matter most.
