This guide is for foreign owned companies, startups, exporters and international teams commissioning web design in Istanbul. Their sites serve two audiences at once: Turkish customers who compare them with local firms, and buyers, partners and investors abroad who judge them by the standards of their own markets.
We, Talha Aslan and team, build sites for companies in this position and run projects in English. Each section opens with the short answer, followed by the checks, steps and questions behind it.
01What Istanbul's Market Demands From a Website
In Istanbul your website is judged side by side with competitors, so its first job is to win a comparison made in seconds. Provincial GDP data for 2024 from TÜİK, the Turkish Statistical Institute, shows how dense the field is: Istanbul produced 29.2% of Turkey's GDP, and its share reached 64% in information and communication, 59.3% in finance and insurance, 39.8% in trade, transport, accommodation and food, and 39% in professional and administrative services.
Those shares also describe your readers. Finance and technology buyers look for signs of care such as a secure connection and working forms; traders, logistics firms and hotels need inquiries from abroad in the buyer's language; consultancies need pages about their people and methods.
For an international company the site is also due diligence material: distributors, banks and job candidates open it before replying. Before any design discussion, write a three line brief:
- One action: the single step a visitor should take, such as requesting a quote, booking a demo or asking for a sample.
- Two or three audiences: customers in Turkey, buyers in the EU and investors, for example.
- One language per audience: the version each group will read, and the person who will write it.
02Local, B2B and International Searches Need Different Pages
Plan your pages around three kinds of search, because each expects a different answer. Local searches want a nearby provider who can help soon, business to business (B2B) searches want specifications and proof, and international searches want reassurance that you serve clients outside the city.
The wording reveals the intent. A district query such as "physiotherapist in Şişli" or "locksmith Kadıköy" is settled largely in the map results, where your Business Profile and proximity outweigh any page. A citywide query such as "English speaking accountant Istanbul" needs a strong service page, while a buyer typing "private label textile manufacturer Turkey" wants capacity, certificates and export experience.
List your ten most valuable services and write the exact phrase a customer would type, in which language and from which country. Group phrases with the same intent onto one page, and open a new page only when the searcher needs a different answer, not just different wording.
Paid campaigns follow the same logic: send each ad click to a landing page built for that search. Google Ads Quality Score, a diagnostic based on expected click through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, helps you spot pages that miss what the ad promised.
03How to Compare Web Design Agencies in Istanbul
Choose the web design agency in Istanbul whose claims you can verify: live sites, code written by people you can name, and a scope in writing. Mockups show taste, but not whether a site loads quickly on a phone, survives an update or can be handed to another team. Run the same five checks on every shortlisted agency.
- Live work: open sites they launched in the last two years on your own phone, over mobile data, and watch how fast the first screen appears.
- Who builds it: the agency's own developers, a subcontractor, or a purchased theme with a page builder; each option changes who can repair the site later.
- English in practice: meet the person who will manage your project, not only the salesperson, and check that feedback flows easily in English.
- Scope on paper: a written list of pages, languages, features, content responsibilities, revision rounds and how extra requests are handled.
- Approvals across borders: how approval works when one decision maker sits in Istanbul and another at headquarters abroad.
A quote produced before anyone asks about your audiences, languages and content is a guess. To run the first check on us, open the live projects on our references page.
04Keep Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts in Your Name
Everything your site depends on should be registered to your company, with the agency added as a user, never the reverse. The risk becomes real when a country manager leaves and nobody can log in to the account that renews the domain.
- Domain: your company is the registrant, the legal holder, and keeps the registrar login, for .com and .com.tr addresses alike.
- Hosting: the contract, or at least a full administrator login, sits with you, so the site can move without anyone's permission.
- Code and licenses: you receive the source code, the database and any paid theme or plugin licenses in your company's name.
- Google accounts: Analytics, Search Console (Google's report on your search visibility), Business Profile and Ads sit under a company Google account; the agency gets an administrator, full user or manager role.
- Everything around the site: DNS, the records that point your domain to servers, and your email, form and booking tools follow the same rule.
Make a shared company mailbox, not one employee's inbox, the owner of these accounts, and ask at handover for an access sheet listing each account, owner and user role. Then check the registrar and renewal date in our whois and domain age lookup; a missed renewal can take the website and company email offline together.
05How the Project Runs, in Person or Online
A project that stays on track passes six gates in order, and each gate closes with your written approval. Skipping one, usually the content gate, is what makes schedules slip.
- Discovery: we review your current site, competitors and existing inquiries, then write the scope and quote.
- Content plan: every page gets a purpose, an author and a language, so writing starts before design does.
- Design approval: the home page and one key inner page are designed for phones first; the approved files become the reference.
- Development: templates, content management, forms and tracking are built only after that approval.
- Testing: real phones, both languages, delivery of every form to the right inbox, and measured speed.
- Launch and handover: the site goes live, the XML sitemap (the file that lists your pages for search engines) is submitted, and your team gets training and the access sheet.
We can hold discovery and design approval at our office in Nida Kule, Ataşehir, or run every meeting by video in English when decision makers sit in different countries. The project board in our CRM, the shared system where we log each task, shows what is waiting on whom.
06Local SEO in Istanbul: Profile, Categories and District Pages
Visibility in Istanbul's map results starts with an accurate Google Business Profile, and the website's job is to confirm every detail on it. Five decisions shape the result:
- Name: use your business name exactly as it appears on your sign and registration; adding keywords such as "Implant Istanbul" breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Categories: choose the primary category that describes your core business, then add only secondary categories that match services you actually sell.
- Address or service area: show the address if customers come to you; if you travel to them, set a service area and hide the address. A virtual office qualifies only if it is staffed during your opening hours.
- Consistency: keep the name, address and phone number identical on your contact page, footer, profile and listings such as Apple Maps and Bing Places.
- District pages: publish one only where you truly serve and have something specific to say, such as response times, local projects or directions from the nearest metro station.
Copies of one page with only the district name swapped are doorway pages, which Google treats as spam. Ongoing work on the profile, reviews and local content is part of our SEO service.
07Bilingual Sites: Localization, hreflang and Contact Channels
Write each language version for its own reader, give it its own address, and connect the versions with hreflang, a tag that tells Google which page serves which language or region. Translation alone keeps the words and loses the buyer: a logistics firm may call itself a freight forwarder in English, while its Turkish customers type "uluslararası nakliye" into the search box.
Keep versions in separate folders or domains, and do not redirect visitors automatically by location or browser language; that can hide pages from Google and would send a German buyer browsing from an Istanbul hotel to the Turkish site. Each version must list all the others and itself in its hreflang annotations, or Google may ignore them. Our hreflang generator writes the full reciprocal set for a page.
Contact habits differ as much as vocabulary. Turkish pages need a visible phone number, a WhatsApp button and a short form, since many local customers prefer to start with a message; English pages need company and country fields, a direct email address and your time zone stated plainly. On both, write phone numbers with the +90 country code and track inquiries per language.
08Speed and Hosting for Visitors in Turkey and Abroad
Write speed targets into the scope as numbers, using Google's Core Web Vitals. A page counts as good when, at the 75th percentile of visits, LCP (largest contentful paint, how fast the main content appears) is 2.5 seconds or less, INP (interaction to next paint, how fast the page reacts to a tap) is 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS (cumulative layout shift, how much the layout jumps) is 0.1 or less.
Host in or near Turkey if most visitors are there; if you also sell to Western Europe, add a CDN, a network that serves copies of files from locations near each visitor. Most other speed problems are settled during the build, so check four points in any proposal:
- Images: WebP or AVIF, modern compressed formats, sized to their slot with width and height declared.
- Fonts: a subset that includes Turkish characters such as ğ, ş and ı, so the browser never mixes typefaces within a word.
- Caching: pages cached on the server and static files cached in the browser.
- Scripts: each chat widget and tracking tag justified, since every one adds work to each tap.
After launch, the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console shows data from real visitors. Our mobile test shows how pages behave on a phone; recheck both after any new widget or plugin.
09Security Basics and Email That Reaches the Inbox
A business site stays secure through routine habits, and your domain's email records belong on the same checklist. Serve every address over HTTPS with an SSL certificate that renews automatically, and update the content management system, theme and plugins on a schedule, testing first on a staging copy, a private duplicate of the site.
Keep daily backups away from the server and test a restore before you need one. Give each person their own login with a second verification step, and remove it the day they leave.
Inbox delivery for company email depends on three DNS records. SPF lists the services allowed to send mail for your domain, DKIM signs each message so the receiver can confirm it was not altered, and DMARC tells receivers how to treat mail that fails those checks and where to send reports. Start DMARC in monitoring mode, read the reports, and move to quarantine or reject only when every legitimate sender passes.
International companies usually have more senders than they expect: group mail abroad, a local invoicing provider, the CRM, a newsletter tool and the website's own forms. Send form notifications through an authenticated mail service so inquiries do not land in spam, then test your domain with our SPF, DKIM and DMARC checker.
10KVKK, GDPR and Cookie Consent for International Companies
Plan the legal layer per audience: a company operating in Turkey falls under KVKK, Turkey's data protection law (Law No. 6698), and if the site targets visitors in the EU or the UK, GDPR or UK GDPR can apply too. Let your legal counsel approve the wording; the agency implements it.
- Information notice: KVKK Article 10 requires an information notice, the aydınlatma metni, stating who processes the data, why, on what legal basis, who receives it and which rights people have; link it beside every form.
- Cookie consent: in the EU, tracking that is not strictly necessary needs consent first, and Google requires consent mode for measurement and personalized advertising features for visitors from the European Economic Area.
- One notice per language: English pages carry an English privacy notice and Turkish pages a Turkish one, with the same facts.
- Separate marketing consent: newsletter or campaign permission gets its own checkbox, never checked by default.
- Processor list: every service that touches personal data, such as hosting, email, CRM and analytics, so your counsel can review contracts and transfers abroad.
Consent mode, which tells Google tags what each visitor chose, works only when banner and tags are wired together. Test it before launch: decline cookies and confirm that no analytics or advertising cookies are set.
11How Requirements Change by Sector in Istanbul
What a site must prove changes by sector, so businesses in the same city need very different builds. These are the patterns we plan for:
- Clinics: Turkey's regulation on promotion and information in health services (Official Gazette, November 12, 2025, No. 33075) bans open or covert advertising of health services and allows before and after images only with patient consent, matching conditions, dates and a set warning; our dental clinic website page goes deeper.
- Service businesses: a click to call button in the first screen, a quote form that accepts a photo of the job, and working hours next to the phone number.
- B2B and exporters: capability pages with specifications, certificates and a downloadable catalog, plus a quote form that asks for quantity, destination country and delivery terms.
- Hotels and tourism: room pages that load fast, directions from both Istanbul airports and a booking engine on your own domain, in the languages your guests book in.
- Education: program pages with schedules, entry requirements and start dates, and an application form short enough to finish on a phone.
Clinics carry one more duty: health data is special category personal data under KVKK Article 6. Do not invite patients to upload records or photos through an ordinary contact form until your legal counsel has approved how such files are received and stored.
12Redesigning a Live Site Without Losing Search Traffic
To protect search traffic in a redesign, give every old address that earns visits or links a matching new home, because search engines rank individual URLs. Decide this in a spreadsheet before design starts.
- Export the pages that get clicks in Search Console and the ones other sites link to.
- Give each old URL a row with its new address and a decision: keep, merge or retire.
- Carry over the titles, passages and answers that already earn clicks, and rewrite around them rather than from a blank page.
- Point every changed address to its closest match with a 301, the permanent redirect, never in chains and never all to the home page.
- On launch day, test the redirects, update internal links, submit the new sitemap and check that the staging noindex tag, which keeps pages out of search results, did not reach the live site.
To drop an old page from the index, leave it crawlable with a noindex tag, because a page blocked in robots.txt, the file that tells crawlers where they may go, keeps its noindex unread. If you also change domains, use the Change of Address tool in Search Console and compare clicks per page with the old site weekly for two months or more.
13Six Common Mistakes and What to Do Instead
The mistakes below are common on international projects and simple to avoid during planning. At that stage a fix takes a conversation rather than a rebuild.
- Skyline stock photos: the Bosphorus at sunset appears on many Istanbul sites and says nothing about you; show your team, premises, products and finished work instead.
- Writing for headquarters: pages that open with group history and a mission statement lose local buyers; lead with what you do in Turkey, for whom, and the next step.
- Approving placeholder text: dummy copy in one language hides layouts that break when real headlines arrive in two; approve designs with real copy in both languages, on a phone.
- A hidden legal identity: a site without the legal company name, registered address and MERSİS number, Turkey's central company registration number, looks provisional to partners and banks; put them in the footer.
- Nobody owning the inbox: English inquiries that wait days for a reply lose the leads the site was built to win; name an owner and a target reply time per language before launch.
- Pages only a developer can edit: team, jobs and news pages go stale when every change needs a ticket; ask for editable sections and test that your staff can update them.
14Budget Drivers, the First 90 Days and Next Steps
The cost of website development in Istanbul is set by scope, not by the city; our prices are the same wherever your office is. Five factors drive it: distinct page templates, languages and who writes them, copy and photography to be created, integrations such as a CRM or booking system, and custom features.
After launch, real visitors show you what works. Agree on a 90 day plan before going live:
- Days 1 to 30: confirm that Google Analytics 4 records calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks as key events, its term for conversions; read every inquiry and fix what visitors stumble over.
- Days 31 to 60: in Search Console, find queries with many impressions but few clicks and rewrite those titles and descriptions; answer the questions that keep appearing in inquiries.
- Days 61 to 90: ask satisfied customers for Google reviews and choose the next investment: new content, another language or paid campaigns.
If a standard structure in one or two languages fits your plans, a fixed scope package is the quicker route; see the pricing section of our web design page. For several markets, integrations or custom features, send your current site, audiences and languages through our contact page, and we will reply with a written scope and quote.
