Web design for companies in Germany

Web Design in Heidelberg

Heidelberg packs a world class research campus, a historic old town and a new congress centre into a city of about 156,000 people. If you run a biotech spin-off in Neuenheimer Feld, a guesthouse near the Old Bridge or a consultancy serving visiting scientists, your website has to work for international readers first and German authorities too. Talha Aslan and team build it with you entirely online.

In short

Web design in Heidelberg usually starts bilingual: English for researchers, investors and the many visitors from abroad, German for local customers and legal duties such as the Impressum and cookie consent. Heidelberg's GDP grew 6.0% in nominal terms in 2024 to 11.7 billion euros, according to the Working Group on Regional Accounts of the German states. Talha Aslan and team run every Heidelberg project online, with a written scope and progress in our CRM.

Heidelberg's business profile

What should a website do for a company in Heidelberg?

Heidelberg had 155,756 residents at the end of 2024 (Destatis). Its GDP reached 11.7 billion euros in 2024, a nominal rise of 6.0% on the year, according to the Working Group on Regional Accounts of the German states. Four strengths shape what a website here has to deliver.

Germany's oldest university

Founded in 1386, Heidelberg University is the oldest in Germany and, according to the city, has about 30,000 students. Students, visiting faculty and their families look for services on their phones and often in English, so clear service lists and a quick way to get in touch decide who they contact.

A life science hub

Heidelberg Technology Park, founded in 1984, hosts around 100 companies and startups, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) are based in the city. A spin-off website must convince investors, partners and scarce talent at the same time, usually in English first.

Castle, Old Bridge and visitors

The Baden-Württemberg statistics office recorded 940,909 guest arrivals and 1,828,540 overnight stays in Heidelberg in 2024, up 14.5% on 2023 for overnight stays. Hotels, cafés and guided tours turn that demand into bookings when their sites read well on a phone and offer an English version.

Congress city and head offices

The Heidelberg Congress Center opened in Bahnstadt in April 2024, with a main hall for up to 1,800 people, and Heidelberg Materials has its head office in the city. Delegates and corporate buyers vet suppliers online before they call, so references, contact routes and languages need to be easy to find.

How we work

Our team is in Istanbul, your Heidelberg project runs on screen

We have no office, branch or staff in Germany; Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul. Every step of a Heidelberg project, from the first call to launch day, happens on video. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Heidelberg in summer and two in winter, so a morning call in Istanbul still fits a lab or clinic schedule in Germany.

We begin with who your readers are: a grant reviewer, a pharma partner, a postdoc moving to Handschuhsheim or a tourist on the Philosophenweg. Which language leads, who drafts the Impressum and when each page goes live are written into the scope. If you happen to travel to Istanbul, we can also sit down together there.

Process

From brief to launch in four steps

  1. Discovery and scope

We define your business, your audience and the site’s one-sentence job: who it sells what to, through which action. Scope and timeline are written from that answer.

  2. Design approval

The home page and key templates come to you as designs first; no code is written before your approval. We do not like surprises, and we do not cause them.

  3. Development

The approved design becomes fast, secure, maintainable code. You follow progress in the CRM and see every page in a staging environment before launch.

  4. Launch and measurement

The site goes live with analytics, Search Console and conversion tracking connected; panel training is given, first-year hosting and maintenance included.

In-depth guide

Web Design Heidelberg: Sites for Labs, Guesthouses and Delegates

Talha Aslan and teamLast updated: 16 min read

This guide is for companies in Heidelberg that work partly or mostly in English: research spinoffs and biotech startups, international consultancies, hotels and guesthouses, relocation and translation services, and practices with patients from abroad. In web design Heidelberg projects, the costly decisions come before the first mockup: who the site is for, which language leads, which German duties apply and who owns the accounts.

We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered those questions the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something concrete to check, decide or ask any agency you are talking to.

The Job a Website Does in Heidelberg's Economy

A Heidelberg website has to serve readers who rarely overlap: a grant reviewer in Brussels, a tourist on the castle terrace and a family that has lived in Kirchheim for decades. Destatis counted 155,756 residents at the end of 2024, so the city is mid sized, yet its audience is unusually international for that size.

The economic numbers point the same way. The Working Group on Regional Accounts of the German states puts Heidelberg's 2024 GDP at 11.7 billion euros, a nominal increase of 6.0 percent, compared with 1.8 percent in Karlsruhe and 0.6 percent in Mannheim. Growth attracts new competitors, so a vague site loses ground quickly.

Before any design work, write down which job the site must do first. In Heidelberg it is usually one or two of these:

  • Win trust without a call: investors, pharma partners or congress organizers who judge you from your technology, team and reference pages.
  • Collect enquiries: room, table, tour, transfer or quote requests through a short form available in more than one language.
  • Book appointments: practices, salons and advisers who need a phone number people can tap and clear opening hours.
  • Hire: labs, clinics and hotels competing for scarce staff with a careers section that shows the work and a simple way to apply.

Whatever ranks first gets the first screen on a phone. Navigation, homepage and the measurement plan all follow from that order.

Who Searches for What in Heidelberg

Searches in Heidelberg come from four distinct intentions, and each one needs its own kind of page. A site that blends them answers everyone a little and nobody fully.

  • District and proximity: "Zahnarzt Neuenheim", "physiotherapy Weststadt" or "Steuerberater in der Nähe". Map results dominate here, so address, hours and a tappable number decide the click.
  • Specialist questions: searches without a city name but from Heidelberg devices, such as "health insurance for postdocs in Germany" or "moving lab equipment". Detailed service pages answer these.
  • Visits: a tourist walking the Philosophenweg or shopping on the Hauptstraße searches in English, on a phone, for something nearby right now.
  • Events: when a large congress fills the venue in Bahnstadt, searches for hotels, catering, interpreters and shuttles rise within days.

The calendar shifts the mix. Summer brings visitor searches around the castle and the old town; the start of each university semester brings searches for apartments, insurance, registration help and movers; the quieter winter months favor local service searches.

Run a simple test on your phone. Type your five most important search phrases once with a district and once with the city name, in German and in English, and note what appears at the top: map pack, ads, directories or company sites. That list tells you which pages to build first and which language deserves the most care.

Choosing a Partner Outside Germany Safely

Working with a team that has no office in Heidelberg is fine when the process is written down and visible; distance is rarely the real risk, vagueness is. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul and run projects in Germany entirely online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two in winter, so working hours overlap for most of the day.

Whoever you talk to, ask these questions and ask for the answers in writing:

  • Meetings: Are kickoff, design review and launch held on video, who leads them and who circulates the notes?
  • Scope: Are the page list, languages, forms and the person responsible for legal texts fixed in writing before you sign?
  • Preview: Can you follow progress on a password protected preview link that is updated as work happens?
  • Response time: How quickly is a question by e-mail or message answered during your business hours?
  • German copy: Does a native German speaker review the German text, or does the agency rely on machine translation?

Also check honesty about track record. Our live work is in Türkiye and listed on our references page; we have not yet built a project in Germany and say so openly.

Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts in Your Name

Every part of your website should be registered to your company, with the agency added only as an authorized user. This protects you if you change provider, if a cofounder leaves, or if a spinoff is restructured after a funding round.

Register the .de domain yourself through a registrar and confirm that your company appears as the holder. Host the site inside the European Union; a data center in Germany or another EU country is the simplest route under data protection law. Your hosting provider must sign a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR, and so must any booking or newsletter tool that handles personal data.

At handover, tick off this list:

  • Domain: registrar login with two factor authentication on your own phone.
  • Hosting: control panel access and invoices addressed to your company.
  • Code and content: a full backup of the site and an administrator account for the content management system.
  • Google accounts: owner role in Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics.
  • E-mail and DNS: control of the mailboxes on your domain and an exported copy of the DNS records.

Put it in the contract that usage rights to code and design files pass to you on delivery. Agree in advance how quickly, and in which format, you receive your data if you ever leave.

The Project Step by Step, Fully Online

A web design Heidelberg project with us runs on screen from first call to launch, and every step produces something in writing. This is the sequence:

  1. Intro call: a 15 minute video call about your company, your readers and the languages you need.
  2. Written scope: page list, languages, forms, integrations, the owner of each legal text and delivery steps in one document.
  3. Content collection: photos, service descriptions and Impressum details gathered in a shared folder, with gaps visible on a checklist.
  4. Design review: homepage and one inner page presented in phone view by screen share; approval recorded in writing.
  5. Build and preview: every page grows on a protected preview link, and you leave corrections directly on the page.
  6. Launch and training: we walk through the launch checklist together, then show you on video how to update content.

None of these steps needs an in person meeting. Our team is in Istanbul; if you happen to travel there, we can sit down together at our office in Ataşehir, but the project does not depend on it.

Most delays come from content rather than code. Aim to finish photography and German service texts by the time design is approved. For research companies, the technology page usually takes longest, because scientists, management and sometimes patent counsel all want to review the wording.

Local Search Across Heidelberg's Districts

For web design Heidelberg projects aimed at local customers, ranking in the map results depends on your website, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings telling the same story. Heidelberg has 15 districts, and many searches include one of them.

Your Business Profile name must match the name on your door, without added keywords; names such as "Physiotherapie Heidelberg Bergheim Termine sofort" break Google's guidelines. If you serve clients at their homes, as a mobile physiotherapist, cleaner or IT technician might, you can hide your address and set Handschuhsheim, Ziegelhausen and Schlierbach as service areas instead.

Be honest about district pages. Create them only where you genuinely work, and give each one something specific: parking notes for clients from Pfaffengrund, home visit days for Emmertsgrund and Boxberg, information for newcomers settling into Bahnstadt. Pages that only swap the district name are thin content that search engines tend to ignore.

A short local checklist:

  • Are category, hours, photos and booking link in your Business Profile current?
  • Do Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and the German directories of your industry show exactly the same name, address and phone number as your site?
  • Do you have a short, polite review request ready in German and English to send after a job?
  • Does your site explain how to reach you from Leimen, Eppelheim or Dossenheim, including parking or tram stops?

Languages: English, German and When to Add Turkish

Language is one of the first web design Heidelberg decisions: for many companies English leads and German is mandatory; for local service businesses it is the other way round. German remains essential for customers, suppliers and authorities, and the Impressum and privacy policy are prepared in German.

English earns its place quickly here. Foreign guests accounted for 512,538 overnight stays in 2024, and the working language in many campus institutes is English. Spinoffs usually address investors, partners and candidates in English first, while a guesthouse or café needs English menus, room details and directions.

Turkish is a targeted addition. According to the Baden-Württemberg statistics office, 2,405 Turkish citizens lived in Heidelberg at the end of 2024, a figure that excludes Germans of Turkish origin. For an insurance broker, estate agent, law office or medical practice, a Turkish version of the key service pages can build trust with clients who prefer to read complex topics in their first language. It rarely needs to cover every page.

The technical rule is simple: each language lives at its own address, for example in separate folders named de, en and tr, and the versions are connected with hreflang annotations, each pointing to the others and to itself. You can test existing tags with our hreflang generator. Write every language natively rather than relying on a translation plugin; our multilingual website page covers the structure in depth.

Speed, EU Hosting and Security

Most people open a Heidelberg website on a phone, often outdoors or between appointments, and a slow page sends visitors and delegates straight to a competitor. Google's Core Web Vitals provide clear targets:

  • LCP (largest contentful paint): how long the main content takes to load; 2.5 seconds or less is good.
  • INP (interaction to next paint): how quickly the page responds to a tap; 200 milliseconds or less is good.
  • CLS (cumulative layout shift): how much the layout jumps while loading; 0.1 or less is good.

These thresholds should hold for at least 75 percent of visits. Large panoramic photos of the Neckar and the castle are the usual culprit; serving them as WebP, sized for the screen, with only the first image loaded immediately, often fixes LCP on its own. Before launch, open each key page on a real phone over mobile data.

Host inside the EU and serve fonts from your own server. Loading Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent led to a damages ruling by the Munich Regional Court on 20 January 2022; local hosting removes that issue entirely.

On security, the basics are an SSL certificate, two factor login for the admin area, regular updates and a daily backup stored off the server. Write maintenance responsibilities and frequency into the scope.

Heidelberg Sector Examples

The right structure depends on who buys from you, and Heidelberg's economy produces a few clear patterns:

  • Research spinoff: Heidelberg Technology Park, founded in 1984, hosts around 100 companies and startups, and EMBL and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) are in the city. A spinoff site needs technology pages written for nonspecialists, team and publications, careers and a press area; see our startup website page.
  • Old town guesthouse or small hotel: room pages, photo directions from the main station, a link to your booking engine and an English version from day one; our hotel website page goes deeper.
  • Practice with international patients: German service pages, a concise English summary of what you treat and how appointments work, and insurance information that newcomers understand.
  • Relocation and housing services: furnished apartments, moving, registration help or insurance for visiting scientists, with semester dates in mind and a quick enquiry form.
  • Congress suppliers: interpreters, caterers, event technicians and shuttle services with bilingual service pages and a quote form.

The Heidelberg Congress Center opened in Bahnstadt in April 2024 with a main hall for up to 1,800 people, and Heidelberg Materials keeps its head office in the city. For suppliers to events and corporate buyers, a dated events section you can update yourself keeps the site relevant between congresses.

If your clients spread across the region toward Karlsruhe, our Karlsruhe page covers that neighboring market.

Legal Basics for a German Website

A commercial website in Germany has a handful of legal components, and they apply equally to international founders. We handle the technical setup; please have the texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).

  • Impressum: under § 5 DDG (Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, which replaced the TMG on 14 May 2024): name, address, contact and register details; regulated professions add their chamber, legal job title, the state that granted it and the professional rules.
  • Privacy policy: a GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung that names the tools your site actually uses.
  • Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only run after consent, and rejecting must be as easy as accepting.
  • Processor agreements: a contract under Art. 28 GDPR with each provider that processes data for you, such as hosting, booking or newsletter tools.
  • Online sales: the order button must state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need withdrawal information.

Since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, Germany's accessibility law, has covered many consumer facing online shops and services. Micro enterprises offering services, with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros in turnover or balance sheet total, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you before the scope is final, because accessibility is far cheaper to build in than to retrofit.

Relaunching Without Losing Rankings

If your current site already brings visitors from Google, a relaunch must map every old address to a new one. Skip that step and visibility built up over years can drop within weeks.

  1. Export from Search Console the pages that received clicks in the last twelve months.
  2. Match each old URL to its counterpart on the new site in a spreadsheet; where there is none, choose the closest topic.
  3. Set up permanent 301 redirects and test them on the preview before launch.
  4. Keep the search phrases that already work when you rewrite titles, descriptions and main headings.
  5. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console after launch and watch 404 errors for the first four weeks.

A common Heidelberg pattern is a German site with a separate English site on another domain, often set up years ago for a conference or an early funding round. A relaunch is the moment to bring both under one domain in language folders, which makes hreflang straightforward and consolidates authority; the old domain keeps working through redirects.

Our website redesign page describes the full process. For hotels and cafés, scheduling launch outside the busy summer weeks lowers the risk further.

Common Mistakes on Heidelberg Business Sites

The same problems show up again and again on smaller Heidelberg sites, and most can be fixed with a few hours of checking before launch:

  • English only, with a thin German page: local customers, suppliers and authorities cannot find or trust you; keep complete German pages for everything that matters locally.
  • Translation plugin instead of language versions: Google does not treat these as separate versions and awkward sentences hurt credibility; publish each language on its own pages, written by a native speaker.
  • Copied Impressum: a text taken from another site lacks your register and professional details; prepare it with your own data and have it reviewed.
  • Tracking before consent: analytics or ad tags that fire before the cookie banner is answered; connect them to consent management.
  • Menus and price lists as PDFs: a visitor in the old town will not open a PDF on a phone; turn it into a readable HTML page.
  • Publication lists without context: a spinoff page that lists papers but never explains the product in plain language; add a short summary for investors and partners above the references.

What Drives the Budget

Our prices do not depend on the city; scope, not location, drives a web design Heidelberg budget. When we prepare a quote, these are the main factors:

  • Number of languages: German only, or English and Turkish as well; each language means separate writing and review.
  • Pages and content: how many service or technology pages, who writes them and whether photography is needed.
  • Integrations: booking engines, appointment systems, CRM, applicant tracking or accounting software.
  • Online sales: number of products, payment methods and a checkout that follows German order rules.
  • Ongoing work: maintenance, content updates and local visibility work after launch.

Phasing usually beats doing everything at once. A first phase with German core pages, legal texts and the Business Profile, followed by a second phase for English or Turkish and extra features, lets real enquiries decide what the second phase contains.

When comparing offers, look beyond the total. A language version missing from the scope, no redirect plan or a domain not registered in your name all return later as separate costs. Our full web design service is described on its own page.

The First 90 Days and Your Next Step

A website is not finished on launch day; the first three months show what works and what needs adjusting. For web design Heidelberg projects we suggest this schedule:

  1. Weeks one and two: test forms, phone links and cookie consent in every language; fix any indexing errors in Search Console.
  2. Month one: complete the Business Profile, ask the first customers for reviews and align directory listings with the site.
  3. Month two: check which pages and which languages bring enquiries; strengthen a weak service page with real questions and answers.
  4. Month three: add one or two pages on topics people search for, such as a congress services page or a guide for newcomers starting a semester.

Measurement makes this possible. When calls, forms and booking requests are tracked as conversions in line with consent, you can see which language version actually performs and invest accordingly.

To decide, look at our packages in the pricing section first. If your scope does not fit a package, for example three languages, a careers area or online sales, book a short video call and we will listen to your company and readers, then send a written scope and quote.
