Galway is a small city that sells to the whole world. A firm in Mervue may quote for a multinational plant at Parkmore in the morning and answer a guesthouse booking from Germany in the afternoon, while a craft shop in An Spidéal serves customers who would rather read Irish. Good web design Galway projects begin by deciding which of these conversations the site has to carry.
We, Talha Aslan and team, wrote this guide for owners and managers in the city and county who are planning a new website or a rebuild. The sections follow the order in which decisions usually fall due, and each one leaves you with a check, a question or a choice to record in writing.
01What a Galway Website Has to Achieve
A Galway website has to look credible to an international reader and still be useful to a neighbour, because the local economy mixes global employers with small owner led firms. The CSO counted 85,910 residents in Galway city and suburbs in Census 2022, fewer than Limerick's 102,287 and more than Waterford's 60,079, yet the city hosts a medtech cluster that RTÉ put at around 15,000 jobs in 2023.
That combination creates readers with sharply different needs. Before any design work, rank these by how much revenue each brings you:
- Supplier qualification: a quality engineer at a device maker who needs scope, certifications and a responsible contact before adding you to an approved vendor list.
- Local service: a household in Knocknacarra or Ballybane comparing two or three firms on a phone after work.
- Visitor planning: someone on the Wild Atlantic Way choosing tonight's dinner or tomorrow's ferry to the Aran Islands.
- Student and graduate traffic: 20,000 students at University of Galway, 21% of them from abroad, looking for services, part time work or a first job.
The top two groups on your list decide the homepage, the menu and the first conversion you will measure. Everything else becomes a secondary path rather than a competing message.
02Search Intent Across the City, County and Gaeltacht
People in Galway search with place names that carry meaning, and the place they type tells you what kind of page they expect. A search for a plumber in Doughiska wants a phone number; a search for a cleanroom contractor in the west of Ireland wants proof of competence.
- Neighbourhood plus trade: "electrician Newcastle Galway", "physio Salthill", "dentist Westside". Map results dominate, so opening hours and a tappable phone number matter more than prose.
- Commuter towns: buyers in Oranmore, Athenry, Moycullen and Bearna often add the town, not the city, to the search.
- Business park searches: "precision machining Galway" or "facility maintenance Ballybrit", typed on a desktop by people who compare several suppliers before shortlisting.
- Visitor searches: "lunch near Eyre Square", "Connemara day tour", "parking Latin Quarter", usually on a phone and often in the hour before acting.
- Irish language searches: in the Gaeltacht some customers search in Irish, so the page title and headings must exist in Irish for them to match.
A simple exercise sharpens the brief. Write your ten most valuable searches on one sheet, group them by these five types, and note which type your current site serves worst. That gap usually defines the first new page.
03Choosing a Partner Outside Ireland
Hiring a studio abroad is sound when the arrangement is transparent: written agreements, a preview you can open at any hour and people who reply within a working day. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, two hours ahead of Galway during Irish Summer Time and three hours ahead in winter, so your morning overlaps with our midday and early afternoon.
Interview any agency, in Galway or elsewhere, with the same questions:
- Who writes the meeting notes after each video call, and how quickly do they arrive?
- Which pages, forms, languages and revision rounds does the scope name, and what does it explicitly exclude?
- Can we watch the build on a password protected preview while it happens?
- Who drafts the English copy, and who checks that it sounds natural to an Irish customer?
- If a supplier audit asks how our site handles personal data, who prepares the answer?
Judge the answers against finished work. We have not completed a project in Ireland yet; our live sites are in Türkiye and collected on our references page. Open a few on your own phone, send a test enquiry and see how fast it is answered.
04Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts in Your Name
Every service the site relies on should be registered to your company, so that a change of agency, owner or staff member never blocks the business. Recovering a lapsed domain or an analytics property owned by a former employee can take weeks.
- Domain: the .ie registry asks registrants to show a connection to the island of Ireland, for example a CRO number or an Irish VAT number; a firm from abroad with an Irish trademark can also qualify. Register it through an accredited registrar in the company's name.
- Hosting: a contract with an EU data centre, signed by you, with your own login to the hosting panel and to DNS, the records that point the domain at the server and mail.
- Code and content: a clause stating that the finished site, texts and images belong to you, and a complete backup you can download at handover.
- Accounts: Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics, booking and payment tools owned by a company address, with the agency invited only as a user.
For firms with an Irish subsidiary of a foreign parent, decide early which entity owns the domain and pays for hosting. That choice affects invoices, data processing agreements and who signs off changes later.
05How the Project Runs, Step by Step and Online
Your project moves through fixed stages on video calls and a shared preview, and nothing proceeds without your written approval. Travel is never necessary; if your work takes you to Istanbul, you can meet us at our office in Ataşehir, but that is entirely optional.
- Brief: a call about your customers, service area and the enquiries you value, followed by written notes the same day.
- Page plan: a sitemap with every page, language and form, plus dates and the items that are out of scope.
- Content responsibilities: which texts you supply, which photos come from real jobs or premises, and which policies your solicitor reviews.
- Design on a phone screen: homepage and one key inner page first, approved before the rest is built.
- Build and review: you comment on the preview, test forms and check opening hours and addresses.
- Launch: redirects, Search Console verification, a training call and an access list for every service.
Name a single person who approves each stage. In family firms and partnerships around Galway, feedback from several directors arriving on different days is the most common cause of slipping dates, so collect it internally before it reaches us.
06Local Visibility in Galway Without Doorway Pages
Local rankings in Galway rest on an accurate Google Business Profile, matching details across the web and service pages that prove real work. A set of near identical pages for every townland, written only to rank, is what Google calls doorway pages, and it tends to weaken a site.
- Profile name: use the name on your shopfront or van, with no keywords added; a service area business that visits customers can hide its address and list the areas it covers.
- Categories and photos: choose the primary category that matches your main service, and add photos of real premises, vehicles or finished work.
- Consistent listings: keep name, address and phone identical on the site, the profile and Golden Pages.
- Reviews: send a short review link after each completed job, reply to every review in a calm tone and never reward reviewers.
In web design Galway briefs, town pages earn their place only with substance. A roofer who has finished jobs in Tuam and Loughrea can publish photos, timings and notes from those towns; without that material, a single coverage page naming the areas served is the honest choice. After launch our search engine optimisation service builds on that structure rather than inflating it.
07English, Irish and When Another Language Pays
English leads every Galway site, but this is one of the few Irish cities where a second language can be Irish rather than a foreign one. The CSO counted 36,687 people in the Galway County Gaeltacht in 2022, and 39% of Irish speakers there use the language daily, so a Connemara business may find an Irish version is worth more than any translation into German or Turkish.
- Irish: worth it for shops, guesthouses, language courses and services in Connemara or the Aran Islands; the text must come from a fluent writer, and place names should appear in their official Irish form.
- German: useful for tour operators and hosts whose guests come mainly from Germany, Austria or Switzerland, and for suppliers reporting to a parent company there.
- Turkish: relevant for Turkish speaking owners in construction, beauty, import or accounting whose community prefers to ask questions in Turkish.
- Technical setup: separate URLs per language and hreflang annotations, where each version references the others and itself.
Our multilingual website page covers the structure, and the free hreflang generator produces the tags. Add one language, measure the enquiries it brings for a season, then decide on the next.
08Speed, Hosting and Security on the West Coast
A Galway site must load fast on a phone over mobile data, because many visitors search from a car park in Salthill, a bus on the N59 or a ferry terminal with a weak signal. Google measures this through Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile of visits:
- LCP, largest contentful paint, when the main content appears: 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP, interaction to next paint, how fast the page responds to a tap: 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS, cumulative layout shift, how much the page jumps while loading: 0.1 or less.
Photography is usually the heaviest element on a Galway site, from coastal views to product shots. Serve images in modern formats, sized for the screen, and let only the first image load immediately.
Host in an EU data centre near Ireland so that form data stays inside the EU and response times stay short. On the security side, require two factor login for every administrator, apply updates monthly, renew the certificate automatically and publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, so your quotations reach a procurement inbox rather than its spam folder. Medtech customers increasingly ask suppliers about these basics in vendor questionnaires.
09Sector Pages That Match Galway's Economy
The most effective Galway sites mirror how their buyers decide, and that varies sharply from a device supplier to a café on Shop Street. For web design Galway planning, choose the page types closest to your revenue:
- Medtech suppliers and contractors: a capabilities page per service, the certifications you hold with their scope, cleanroom or validation experience stated precisely, and a short request for quote form; see the manufacturer website page for structure.
- Guesthouses and B and Bs: room pages with real photos, distance to Eyre Square or the Prom, a link to your existing booking engine and a clear cancellation policy; our hotel website page goes further.
- Tours and activities: departure points, durations, weather policy and what to bring, in plain text that a visitor can read in poor light.
- Language schools and student services: course dates, accommodation options, visa related contact points and term time opening hours.
- Trades in the suburbs: project pages from named areas, insurance details and a survey request that asks for property type and timing.
Build the two most profitable page types first and in depth. A thin version of every type rarely produces enquiries.
10Irish Rules for a Business Website
Irish websites follow EU law and a few national instruments, and compliance is easiest when it is designed in rather than added at the end. This is general information, not legal advice; have the final texts reviewed by a solicitor.
- Data protection: the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply to every form, booking and newsletter signup, supervised by the Data Protection Commission; the privacy notice must explain what you collect, why and for how long.
- Cookies: S.I. No. 336 of 2011 means non essential cookies, including most analytics and advertising tags, may load only after the visitor consents, with refusal as easy as acceptance.
- Accessibility: S.I. No. 636 of 2023 applies the European Accessibility Act since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing services, including e-commerce; microenterprises providing services are exempt, so check your position.
- Consumer sales: the Consumer Rights Act 2022 governs consumer contracts, and online buyers generally have a 14 day period to cancel, which your shop must explain.
For tour operators and hosts, put cancellation, deposit and weather terms on one page linked from every booking button. That single page prevents more disputes than any checkbox in the checkout.
11Relaunching Without Losing Search Traffic
A new site keeps the visibility of the old one when every address with traffic or links points permanently to its nearest new equivalent. Rankings usually fall after a relaunch because of missing redirects and deleted text, not because of the new design.
- Collect all current URLs from Search Console, the XML sitemap and a crawl, and flag those with visits, links or enquiries.
- Pair each with its new address in a spreadsheet; our redirect mapping tool speeds up the matching.
- Carry over text that ranks and improve it, rather than cutting it to fit a new layout.
- Configure 301 redirects on the preview and test a sample before switching the domain.
- Submit the new sitemap and review Search Console weekly for eight weeks, fixing every 404 that matters.
Seasonal businesses should time the switch carefully. Relaunching a Galway guesthouse or tour site in late June leaves no margin before the July festival; spring or autumn gives search engines time to process the change.
12Common Mistakes on Galway Business Sites
Most underperforming Galway sites share a handful of avoidable faults, and each has a fix that is modest next to the enquiries it loses.
- Machine translated Irish: an automatic widget produces Irish that native speakers notice at once; commission a fluent writer or leave Irish out until you can.
- Summer content all year: festival dates and seasonal menus still showing in November; set a calendar reminder to review seasonal pages every quarter.
- Vague supplier claims: "serving the medical industry" with no scope or certificates; list exactly what you do, for which processes and under which standards.
- Booking only by phone call: visitors from other time zones cannot ring at 9 in the morning; add a booking link or a short enquiry form that answers within a day.
- Analytics before consent: tags firing on page load; load them only after agreement and count form submissions on the server.
- One page for the whole county: Connemara, the city and the commuter towns merged into a single vague claim; describe each area you actually serve.
13What Drives the Budget, Without the Figures
The effort behind a web design Galway project depends on decisions you control, never on the city; clients abroad choose from the same packages as clients in Türkiye. These factors shape the scope:
- Page types: a capability page, a room page and a tour page each need separate layouts and content.
- Languages: an Irish, German or Turkish version adds writing, review and ongoing updates, not just translation.
- Integrations: booking engines, CRM connections, product catalogues or a supplier portal take longer than static pages.
- Content readiness: real photos and approved texts shorten the project; starting from nothing lengthens it.
- Online sales: a shop needs payment, delivery, cancellation and accessibility checks tested end to end.
What a standard build includes is set out on our web design service page. When you compare offers for web design Galway work, line them up by pages, languages, privacy texts and support after launch; offers that leave these out only appear cheaper.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The months after launch decide whether the site produces enquiries, so agree a plan before the build closes. A practical rhythm for Galway firms:
- Weeks 1 and 2: test every form, call button and booking link on a phone, verify Search Console and ask recent customers for reviews.
- Weeks 3 to 6: study which searches bring impressions, add one case, room or project page per week and fix any slow template.
- Weeks 7 to 10: compare enquiries by source, area and language, and strengthen the page nearest to producing work.
- Weeks 11 to 13: revisit the language and area choices from the brief and adjust them with real data before the next season.
To judge whether we suit your web design Galway project, check three things: whether our written scope answers the questions in this guide, whether our live work convinces you on a phone, and whether the time difference fits your team. Packages and their contents are in our web design pricing section.
When you are ready, arrange a short video call and tell us in a few lines what your business does and who buys from it. We will reply with a written scope and quote shaped around your customers, your languages and your season.
