This guide is for Freiburg businesses that work partly or mainly in English: research spinoffs, international founders, practices with patients from abroad, language schools and guesthouses. A web design Freiburg project raises questions most German cities never meet, from French pages for Alsace to German legal duties that apply even when your audience is global.
Talha Aslan and team arranged the topics below along the path a real project takes, from the first scoping call to the third month after launch. Every section gives you something to act on: a test, a decision for the written brief or a question for whoever builds your site.
01What a Website Has to Carry in Freiburg's Economy
In Freiburg, a company website is often the first and only introduction to people who arrived in the city recently and know nobody to ask. Destatis counted 237,460 residents on 31 December 2024, yet the University of Freiburg alone had 24,422 students enrolled on 1 December 2024. Every semester brings a new wave of residents who choose their doctor, gym and landlord from a phone screen.
Two employers shape the rest of the picture. The University Medical Center employs more than 15,000 people and is the largest employer in South Baden, and Fraunhofer ISE, in the city since 1981, has about 1,400 staff. That mix gives most local websites one or two of these jobs:
- Orienting newcomers: what you do, which district you are in and which languages you speak, readable without scrolling.
- Explaining technical work: a solar spinoff or an engineering office must make its product clear to investors, grant reviewers and homeowners at once.
- Serving shift workers: hospital staff need evening and Saturday availability and an inquiry route that works outside office hours.
- Recruiting internationally: a careers page in English that states the working language, visa support if offered and how the application works.
In any web design Freiburg brief, rank these jobs in writing before design starts; the top one gets the first phone screen and becomes the conversion you measure.
02Search Intent in Freiburg: Districts, Languages, Semesters
Searches in Freiburg split by neighborhood, language and time of year, and each needs its own answer, so build the page list from real queries.
- Neighborhood: "Hausarzt Zähringen", "Physiotherapie Haslach" or "Kita Rieselfeld". Map results dominate here, so address, nearest tram stop and a tappable phone number matter more than design.
- English language: "English speaking dentist Freiburg" or "German course for researchers" come from people who want proof that the conversation, not just the website, works in English.
- Cross border: customers from Basel usually search in German, customers from Alsace often in French; parking, opening hours and payment methods are their first questions.
- Calendar: the winter semester starts in October and the summer semester in April, when searches for housing, bikes, furniture and language courses rise. The Christmas market and SC Freiburg home matches shift restaurant and café searches.
Try this before talking to anyone. On your phone, search your five core services as a newcomer would, first in German, then in English, and write down whether the top of the page shows a map, ads, Jameda style portals or rival websites. Whatever type keeps winning is the page type you lack, and it tells a web design Freiburg agency whether to start with local or international content.
03Working With a Partner Outside Germany
Distance matters far less than clarity: an agency abroad works when every decision lands in writing and you can see progress yourself. Our team sits in Istanbul and handles German clients entirely online. The clock difference is small, one hour in summer and two in winter, so a Freiburg workday and ours overlap for most of the morning and afternoon.
Whether the studio sits in the Altstadt or abroad, get written answers before signing:
- Meetings: Which person leads each video call, does it run in English or German, and who sends the decision log afterwards?
- Scope: Does one document list pages, languages, revision rounds and what is explicitly excluded?
- Preview: Is there a staging link you can open on your own phone between meetings to see the current state?
- German copy: Who writes or proofreads the German pages, and who checks consistent formal address and correct legal terms?
- Cover: Who answers when your project manager is on leave?
Treat references as live products, not portfolio images. Pick three, load them on mobile data, send a test inquiry and tap the number to call. Our published projects are all in Türkiye for now, so hold them to that same standard, together with every other shortlisted studio.
04Ownership of Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Before the first line of code, your company should hold every login the site relies on; otherwise changing providers later becomes a negotiation.
- Domain: your .de name sits with a registrar of your choice, registered to the company, renewing automatically, with a shared office mailbox as contact.
- Swiss and French domains: customers from Basel or Colmar do not by themselves justify a .ch or .fr domain. Unless you run a separate version for that market, such domains should simply redirect permanently to your main site.
- Hosting: a data center inside the EU, and logins of your own for the hosting dashboard and the DNS zone, which points your domain at the web server and the mail server.
- Code and licenses: a written transfer of usage rights, handover of the source code, and fonts, images and plugins licensed to you.
- Google accounts: analytics, Search Console and the map listing belong to a Google account your company controls; two colleagues hold admin rights and the agency is merely invited.
Where a provider touches visitor data, for example the host, a newsletter tool or an appointment widget, Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO in German) asks for a written processing contract. Keep them with the login list in a shared password vault.
05The Project Step by Step, Fully Online
Our projects for Freiburg clients move through six stages; nothing proceeds until you sign off the previous one, and the CRM shows what is open. We schedule calls inside German office hours, usually mornings.
- Kickoff call: goals, audiences (city, surrounding towns, Switzerland, Alsace, international staff), competitors and existing material, ending in a written page list with owners.
- Structure and copy: content and page order are settled before visuals. Your input is facts, photos and the questions customers ask you every week.
- Design: we show two layouts first, the homepage and a representative service page, live on a call and as a clickable link; the rest are styled once those are agreed.
- Build: the site takes shape on a closed staging address with Impressum, consent tool, inquiry forms and tracking already wired in.
- Testing: before DNS moves, we send every form, time the pages, open them on typical Android and iPhone screens and read through German, English and any French copy once more.
- Launch and training: go live on a midweek morning, test every contact route and train whoever will edit content.
You never have to travel for any of this. Should a trip bring you to Istanbul, the kickoff or a design session can take place in person at our Ataşehir office.
06Local Search in Freiburg: Profile, Districts and Directories
For "near me" searches, Google Business Profile is what people see first; the website supplies the depth a profile cannot hold. Both must carry identical details, down to the house number and the area code.
- Name: use the trading name from your shopfront and letterhead. Stuffing extras like "English Dentist Wiehre" into it is against Google's rules and can get the listing suspended.
- Storefront or service area: a business that receives customers shows its address; a contractor who travels to clients can hide it and list real service areas such as Gundelfingen, Denzlingen, Umkirch or Merzhausen.
- Directories: Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche, 11880 and, for medical practices, Jameda, all with the same contact data.
- Reviews: after a finished job, ask for an honest review with a direct link, offer nothing in return, and reply to every review calmly.
Create a page for a district only if it has real substance of its own, say a second practice in St. Georgen or regular contracts in Weingarten. Near identical copies that change nothing but the place name are treated by Google as doorway pages, a spam pattern that can weaken the entire domain.
Ongoing profile care, review requests and local content are part of our search engine optimization work, which can follow a web design Freiburg launch in German and English.
07Languages: German First, Then English, French or Turkish
Even for founders who work in English all day, the German version is the backbone: the tax office, landlords, many suppliers and most local customers read it, and the legal pages depend on it. Add a language when you can name the group that reads it and someone can reply to them in that language.
- English: students, visiting researchers and international hospital staff; for spinoffs and language schools, English may be the lead version, with German pages for local partners and funding bodies.
- French: according to FWTM, 613,244 overnight stays in 2024 came from guests abroad, with Switzerland and France the two largest markets. Restaurants, hotels and shops with Alsatian customers benefit from short, carefully written French pages.
- Turkish: for practices, insurance agents, travel agencies and lawyers whose customers prefer to explain their situation in Turkish.
Each language gets its own pages and URLs, never a translation widget that Google does not treat as a separate version. The hreflang annotation assigns each page a language; versions must reference each other reciprocally and each page must list itself. Our hreflang generator produces the tags. Swiss German writes ss instead of ß, but unless content really differs, a separate Swiss version adds little.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Core Web Vitals are Google's three speed signals; a page passes when three quarters of real visits come in under each limit. Write the limits into the agreement and ask to see field or lab results before handover.
- LCP: how long the largest visible element, usually the hero image, takes to appear; 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP: how quickly the page reacts to a tap or click; 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS: how much the layout jumps while loading; 0.1 or less.
Freiburg adds a practical reason: many visitors check your site on the way into Black Forest valleys, where reception can be patchy. Right sized WebP images and no autoplay video backgrounds are the quickest gains.
Hosting inside the EU keeps the privacy policy shorter and data transfer questions simple. Load fonts from your own server as well: the Munich Regional Court I ruled on 20 January 2022 that a site owner owed damages after embedding Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent, which disclosed visitors' IP addresses. Security rests on four habits, each with a named owner: auto renewing HTTPS, updates tried on staging first, daily offsite backups with a tested restore, and two factor login for every admin.
09Freiburg Sector Examples, From Spinoff to Guesthouse
The sector, more than company size, decides which pages a site needs. These general patterns, not client stories, follow from Freiburg's mix of research, medicine, tourism and students.
- Research spinoffs and software teams: a problem and solution page, team with credentials, selected publications or pilot results, a press kit and a careers page, usually English first. The startup website page shows the structure; if your product needs a customer portal or dashboard, see our custom software development.
- Solar installers and energy consultants: photos of completed roofs and heat pumps, the service area around Freiburg, which documents you prepare for funding applications, and an inquiry form that accepts photos; details on the solar company website page.
- Practices and therapists: treatments in plain language, whether a referral is needed, languages spoken by name, and an Impressum with the correct professional title, plus the chamber for doctors.
- Guesthouses and restaurants: menu as text rather than a PDF, short French and English summaries, group bookings and match day hours.
Use the nearest pattern as a starting list and add the questions customers keep asking; in web design Freiburg projects for international audiences, those answers often become the most read pages.
10Legal Basics for Websites in Germany
A Freiburg website falls under German and EU rules even if most readers are international, and these duties shape page structure, so plan them early. Have the texts themselves reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt); this is an overview, not legal advice.
- Impressum under § 5 DDG: who is behind the site (person or company with postal address), for a GmbH or UG the managing directors, a fast contact channel including e-mail, the commercial register entry and the VAT ID where one exists. Doctors, lawyers and other regulated professions also name their chamber, their legal title and the country that granted it, plus the professional regulations.
- Privacy: a GDPR compliant privacy notice that explains each data flow, linked in the footer and next to every form.
- Cookies under § 25 TDDDG: statistics, marketing pixels and similar extras may write to or read from a visitor's device only once that visitor agrees. If you use Google measurement or personalized ads, Google additionally requires consent mode for EEA visitors.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the BFSG covers many shops and digital services sold to consumers; micro businesses offering services are excluded. Have your own case checked.
- Online shops: § 312j BGB requires an unambiguous final button such as "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers must be told about their right of withdrawal.
Your English and French pages link to the same German Impressum and privacy notice in their footers. Treat any off the shelf legal bundle sold as covering everything, without questions about your business, with caution.
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
A relaunch keeps its rankings when each address that earned traffic or links points, via redirect, to the matching new page. The old page that has ranked for "Steuerberater Herdern" or "yoga Wiehre" for years is precisely the one that vanishes when nobody maps it.
- Inventory: collect all old addresses from the XML sitemap, the Search Console performance report and a crawler, and note twelve months of clicks plus any external links per row.
- Mapping: mark each row as keep, merge or drop and write the target address next to it; the redirect mapping tool fills much of that sheet for you.
- Protect staging: with a password, not robots.txt. Google cannot read the noindex on a page blocked in robots.txt.
- Redirect: permanent 301 redirects straight to the target, no chains, and never everything to the homepage.
- Monitor: hand the fresh sitemap to Search Console, check not found errors and indexing coverage weekly for a month or two, and change the URL in your map listing and directory entries.
Moving to a new domain at the same time? Hold on to the old one for years and announce the move with the change of address feature in Search Console. Do not go live in the week before lectures start or the Christmas market opens if those weeks carry your revenue.
12Common Mistakes on Freiburg Websites and Better Options
On small Freiburg sites, inquiries are rarely lost to colors or fonts; they slip away through overlooked details. These six turn up again and again, each with a fix:
- English only, no German: founders build for investors and forget the local market and the authorities. Better: a German core with legal pages, plus English where the audience is international.
- Machine translated French: it is not indexed as its own version and Alsatian readers spot the awkward phrasing immediately. Better: a few short, proofread French pages with their own URLs.
- Street address only: newcomers do not know the streets yet. Better: name the nearest tram stop, bike racks and parking garage.
- Stock photos of the Minster: they say nothing about your business. Better: real photos of your team, premises and work.
- Tracking before consent: the banner is visible, yet the analytics request has already left the browser. Better: tie every tag to the consent signal and confirm in the network panel that nothing is sent beforehand.
- Outdated Impressum: it still points to the TMG, which the DDG replaced in May 2024, or the register number is missing. Better: compare it with § 5 DDG each time company details change.
13What Drives the Budget and What Should Not
Our prices do not depend on the city: web design Freiburg clients choose from the same packages as clients anywhere else, and effort follows scope, languages and features. These factors move it most:
- Page templates: the number of different page types, such as service, team, publication and contact, matters more than the total page count.
- Languages: each version needs its own review cycle and a clear answer to who writes or adapts the copy; three languages mean three rounds of review.
- Features: booking, a shop, a customer area or an integration with an existing CRM or lab system.
- Content: ready texts and photos, or new production.
- Maintenance: whether you edit content yourself or a maintenance contract covers updates, backups and checks.
Good preparation saves the most. Short descriptions of each service, genuine photos even if shot on a phone, and the questions customers repeat cut revision rounds, as does deciding early who has the final word.
Effects nobody notices and plugins for unused features should stay out of the quote; ask which first section job each line item serves.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The quarter after launch shows whether the site earns its keep, as long as each month carries a single measurable task. For a Freiburg business, this order works:
- Month one: verify that phone taps, form sends and booking requests appear as key events in GA4 for consenting visitors, and clear any indexing errors Search Console reports.
- Month two: see which queries and districts your pages appear for, sharpen titles and copy, and request the first reviews.
- Month three: turn recurring inquiry questions into page content, compare how many leads each language brings and decide where effort or ad spend goes next.
A single language site of modest scope often fits a fixed price package from our price list. Multilingual sites, shops and relaunches get their own written quote. Use our contact form; a video call follows, then the scope and quote in writing.
For the first call, three things are enough: the main job of the site, the five searches you tried on your phone and who currently holds the domain login. With those ready, a web design Freiburg inquiry becomes a plan of languages, pages and dates in a single conversation.
