This web design Erlangen guide is for companies and founders in the city who are planning a new website or replacing one that no longer fits: medtech suppliers, research spin offs, practices with international patients, relocation and housing services, language schools and consultancies. Readers in this city are often engineers, clinicians and scientists, so a site is judged the way a technical document is judged: on accuracy, structure and what it leaves out.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered the decisions the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something concrete to check, decide or ask any agency, whether or not you end up working with us.
01What Erlangen's Economy Asks of a Website
In Erlangen a website has to prove competence within seconds, because the people reading it can tell vague claims from verifiable facts. Destatis counted 115,928 residents at the end of 2024, a modest city by population. Yet the Bavarian State Office for Statistics puts GDP per resident in 2023 at 116,283 euros, against 72,657 in Nuremberg and 46,745 in Fürth.
That output comes from health, medical technology, research and the university. The city describes itself as the home of the Medical Valley EMN cluster and says roughly one in five workers is employed in healthcare; the university hospital has more than 9,500 staff, and Fraunhofer IIS, known for developing the mp3 format, has its headquarters here. Large employers such as the Siemens Campus, which according to the company has around 16,000 people working there, add a steady flow of newcomers.
Before any design work, write down which of these jobs your site must do first:
- Win technical buyers: product families, specifications, certificates and a named contact a procurement team can verify without a call.
- Book local appointments: services, insurance accepted, opening hours and a tap to call button for patients and customers nearby.
- Serve newcomers: plain English explanations of German processes for people who arrived last month.
- Recruit: a careers page that shows how your team works, since talent in this city has many options.
The order you choose decides the menu, the first screen on a phone and what you later measure.
02Search Intent in Erlangen: Districts, Newcomers and the Calendar
Searches in Erlangen fall into four distinct intents, and each one needs a different type of page. A homepage that tries to answer all four usually answers none of them well, which is why intent mapping comes first in any web design Erlangen brief.
- District and proximity: German queries such as "Zahnarzt Büchenbach", "Physiotherapie Röthelheimpark" or "Elektriker Eltersdorf". Map results dominate, so address, hours and a phone number matter more than long copy.
- Newcomer questions in English: "English speaking pediatrician Erlangen", "register address Erlangen" or "flat near Südgelände". These people compare several providers on a phone, often in their first weeks.
- Expert research: buyers and partners searching for a technology or component, often without any city name. Detailed product and method pages win here.
- Calendar peaks: the start of the winter semester at FAU brings housing, insurance and course searches; during the Bergkirchweih, which starts on the Thursday before Whitsun on the Burgberg and runs twelve days, nearby businesses get questions about access and changed hours.
FAU reported 39,697 students for the winter semester starting in October 2024, about 23 percent of them international, and around three quarters study in Erlangen.
Try one test: search your five main services on a phone, once with a district and once with only the city, and note what appears first. Whether you see maps, directories or competitor sites shows which page deserves priority in your web design Erlangen plan.
03Choosing a Partner Outside Germany
A partner without an office in Germany works well when the process is written down, visible and easy to reach; distance itself is rarely the problem. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul, and projects in Germany run fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Central European time in summer and two in winter, so most of the working day overlaps.
Ask every agency the same questions and get the answers in writing:
- Who is your single point of contact, and how quickly do they reply on which channel?
- Does the written scope list every page, language, form and who supplies the legal texts?
- Will you see a working preview link throughout design and development, not only static images?
- Can calls run in English or German, and are decisions confirmed in writing afterwards?
- How are small changes after launch requested, and how long do they take?
If an agency cannot answer these clearly, its location makes no difference. You can review live work, all of it in Türkiye, on our references page.
04Ownership: Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
In any web design Erlangen project, every part of the site should be registered to your company, with the agency holding only delegated access. This is where most disputes start when firms change providers, so settle it in the first week.
- The .de domain: registered through a registrar with your company as the domain holder and a company e-mail address you control.
- Hosting: a server inside the EU, with a data processing agreement under Art. 28 of the GDPR signed with the host.
- Code and content: theme files, custom code and a database backup handed over at launch, with usage rights for custom work stated in the contract.
- Accounts: Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics created under your own Google account; the agency gets user access.
If you are not sure who holds your current domain, our WHOIS lookup shows the registration details and the domain's age. Spin offs in particular often find their first domain registered to a founder's private account or a university contact; move it to the company before the new site goes live.
Keep credentials in a shared password manager rather than in e-mail threads. At launch, the handover list should name the owner of every login, so nothing depends on one person's inbox.
05The Project Step by Step, Fully Online
With an Erlangen client, the project runs on screen from the first call to launch, and each step ends with a written sign off. A typical sequence:
- Discovery call: we review your offer, your readers and your current site, and look at competitor results together by screen sharing.
- Written scope: pages, languages, forms, legal text sources and dates in one document.
- Content collection: photos, datasheets and texts in a shared folder; missing items appear as tasks in our CRM.
- Design and preview: the phone layout is approved first, then desktop; the preview stays closed to search engines.
- Testing and launch: speed, forms, consent banner and Impressum are checked before the domain is switched.
- Handover: a recorded video session shows your team how to update content.
Calls are scheduled in Central European time around your clinic or lab hours. If your travels bring you to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our Ataşehir office; it is entirely optional, and no step of the project depends on it.
The most valuable thing you contribute is speed at sign off and one named content owner. Conflicting comments from several people, typical in research teams where everyone is an expert, slow projects more than anything else.
06Local Search in Erlangen Without Doorway Pages
Local visibility starts with your site and your Google Business Profile giving the same facts in the same form. The business name in the profile must match your real world name; adding keywords such as "English speaking doctor Erlangen" breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
Name only the places you really serve. If your practice is in Anger, that is where the address and directions belong; if your technicians visit Bruck, Alterlangen, Dechsendorf or Tennenlohe, list those once on your service page. Do not build near identical pages for Herzogenaurach, Baiersdorf or Fürth; Google may treat such doorway pages as spam.
Beyond the profile, these steps help in Germany:
- Directories: keep name, address and phone identical on Gelbe Seiten and Das Örtliche.
- Reviews: ask after a completed service with a short link; never buy reviews or trade them for discounts.
- Replies: answer in the reviewer's language, and in healthcare never confirm that the reviewer is a patient.
- Photos: the entrance and the building front help first time visitors find you, especially in the older streets of the Altstadt.
Erlangen is a cycling city, so mention the nearest bus stop and bike parking in your directions. If you want ongoing work on rankings and content, our SEO service handles that as a separate engagement.
07Languages: When English Leads and When German Does
Whether English or German leads depends on who pays you, not on where you sit. A medtech supplier selling worldwide or a spin off courting investors can lead in English with German for key pages; a practice, landlord or trade business serving the region leads in German.
Whatever leads, the Impressum and privacy policy must be available in German, because German law and German authorities expect them. Turkish pages make sense when part of your clientele is more comfortable in Turkish, for instance older patients or families signing their first rental contract.
- Give each language its own URL, such as a language folder after your domain.
- Set up hreflang so that every version references the others and itself; our hreflang generator builds and checks the tags.
- Do not publish machine translation without a native speaker's review, least of all technical or medical copy.
- Label the language switcher with language names rather than flags.
A second language does not have to mirror the whole site. For most local businesses, the five most requested services plus contact and directions are enough to start.
Before adding a language, check that someone can answer enquiries in it. A newcomer who writes in English and receives a German reply loses confidence at the very first contact.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
A fast site matters in a city where many searches happen on a phone between lectures, shifts or tram stops. Google's Core Web Vitals define "good" at the 75th percentile of visits as: LCP (largest contentful paint, how fast the main content loads) of 2.5 seconds or less; INP (interaction to next paint, how quickly the page responds to a tap) of 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS (cumulative layout shift, how much the layout jumps) of 0.1 or less.
To meet them:
- Images: lab, product and team photos in WebP, sized for each screen width.
- Fonts: hosted on your own server instead of loaded from Google, for speed and data protection.
- Scripts: remove unused sliders, chat widgets and social feeds; each adds load time and often a consent question.
- Documents: put key facts from datasheets on the page itself and offer the PDF as a download, not as the only source.
For security, use two factor login for the admin area, weekly updates and backups stored away from the web server. If a form collects health information, ask only for what is necessary; an open "describe your symptoms" field multiplies sensitive data you then have to protect.
09Sector Examples Shaped by Erlangen
Erlangen's mix of medicine, research and an international university produces a few recurring website types, each with its own structure.
Practices for an international clientele. Doctors, dentists and therapists treating expats and students need English service pages, German legal pages, a list of accepted insurance types (statutory or private) and a clear appointment path. Our doctor website page covers the structure in depth.
Medtech suppliers. Product families, technical data, certificates and an enquiry form instead of a cart, in English for global buyers and German for clinics in the region. Hospital procurement teams look for documentation and delivery terms before anything else.
Research spin offs. A clear problem and solution story, a demo request, team and careers pages and a place for publications and funding partners; see our startup website page.
Services for newcomers. Relocation, housing, translation, tax advice and childcare providers do well with:
- A "first steps" page that lists the documents a newcomer needs, in the order they need them.
- A short glossary of German terms such as Anmeldung or Haftpflicht, explained in plain English.
- A first contact form that asks only for name and contact details, not passports or contracts.
Companies with clients across the whole metropolitan region may also want to compare our web design guide for Nuremberg, since many Erlangen customers live or work there.
10Legal Basics for Websites in Germany
A website aimed at German users follows German rules, even if your team works mostly in English. Knowing the outline saves time with your agency and your lawyer.
- Impressum: required for business sites under § 5 DDG (Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz, in force since 14 May 2024). Regulated professions such as doctors, dentists or tax advisers also state their chamber, legal job title, the state that granted it and the applicable professional rules.
- Privacy policy: required under the GDPR (DSGVO in German) when personal data is processed; every form, map embed or booking tool must be covered.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking run only after consent, and rejecting must be as easy as accepting.
- Accessibility: the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing shops and services; micro enterprises providing services are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: the order button must say something like "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need withdrawal information.
Health adds its own limits: HWG § 11 restricts comparative before and after images for operative procedures of plastic surgery, and the professional rules for doctors and dentists allow factual information while forbidding advertising contrary to the profession. A Munich regional court (LG München I, 20 January 2022) awarded damages over Google Fonts loaded from Google's servers without consent, which is why we host fonts locally. We build the structure; please have the texts checked by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
11Relaunching Without Losing Rankings
The biggest risk in a relaunch is old URLs with no counterpart on the new site. Every page Google knows should point to its closest new equivalent with a permanent (301) redirect.
- Crawl the current site and export every URL; mark the pages with the most clicks in Search Console.
- Assign a new URL to each old one; send pages without a match to the nearest parent topic, never all to the homepage.
- Check the mapping with our redirect mapping tool and add the rules on the server.
- Keep the preview out of the index with noindex; Google cannot read a noindex on a page blocked in robots.txt, so check both settings on launch day.
- Submit the new XML sitemap in Search Console and watch the 404 report for four weeks.
If you add language versions, set up hreflang on the same day. Spin offs that started on a project page at a university or institute domain should ask whether a redirect or a link to the new company site can be placed there, since those pages often carry the strongest links the company has.
Do not drop content that earns traffic: a well visited datasheet page or a guide to registering in Erlangen should keep its topic and URL even if its design changes completely.
12Common Mistakes on Erlangen Business Sites
These are the mistakes that cost trust fastest with an expert audience, each paired with a better approach.
- Marketing language for technical buyers: instead of "innovative solutions", state what the product measures, under which standard and for whom it is not suitable.
- Datasheets only as PDFs: instead of hiding specifications in downloads, put the key data on an indexable page and offer the PDF as a supplement.
- Three languages on one page: instead of stacking German, English and Turkish text, give each language its own URL with hreflang.
- A consent banner with only "accept": instead, offer "reject" with equal weight, as German law expects.
- Copied district pages: instead of cloning a page for every suburb, keep one service area list and a real address.
- A team page without qualifications: instead of first names and smiles, list degrees, where they were obtained and professional registrations.
If your current site shows two or more of these, fixing content and structure often pays off before any visual redesign.
13What Drives the Budget
Scope drives the budget for web design Erlangen clients, not the city: a company here works with the same packages as one anywhere else. Knowing which decisions raise or lower effort makes quotes comparable.
- Number of languages: each adds copy, review and hreflang setup.
- Page types: static service pages, a product catalogue with filters or a booking flow differ greatly in effort.
- Integrations: appointment tools, CRM connections, applicant tracking or payment.
- Content preparation: whether you or we write the copy, and whether photography is needed.
- Migration: moving content from the old site and mapping redirects.
When comparing quotes, make sure the items match. One may include placing the legal texts, the consent tool and first year hosting, another may not; ask in writing what is included.
The most effective way to control cost is a lean first release: launch with the most requested services, contact and legal pages, then add a second language, a catalogue or a careers section once you see what visitors actually use.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
Launch day is a starting point; the first three months show how the site performs with real visitors. Plan them like this:
- Weeks one and two: test forms, click to call and the consent banner on several devices, and confirm that enquiries arrive in the right inbox.
- Month one: check indexed pages and errors in Search Console; compare your Business Profile with the site.
- Month two: find the question you hear most often and give it its own section or page.
- Month three: update notices and hours ahead of the new FAU semester or the Bergkirchweih, whichever comes next.
If you are planning a site for your Erlangen business, our fixed price packages are listed in the pricing section of our web design page. Projects with several languages, product catalogues or booking flows get a written quote after a short video call. Send your request through our contact form; we can talk in English, German or Turkish.
To prepare, note three things: who you most want to read the site, the five questions you are asked most often, and two sites you like or dislike. That is enough to define a web design Erlangen scope in a single call.
