This guide is for companies in Erfurt that work across borders: logistics providers serving shippers abroad, studios pitching to broadcasters, hotels hosting foreign guests, and employers recruiting graduates who do not yet speak German. Most decisions in a web design Erfurt project are made before anyone opens a design file: who the site has to convince, which languages it needs, who owns the accounts and who writes the legal pages.
Talha Aslan and team have ordered those questions the way they come up in a real project. Each section ends with something you can check yourself or put to any agency as a direct question.
01The job a website does in Erfurt's economy
In Erfurt a company website has to work for two audiences at once: German customers and authorities, and partners or hires who read English first. Thuringia's state statistical office puts Erfurt's 2023 GDP at 10.9 billion euros, against 6.4 billion for Jena and 3.5 billion for Gera, which makes the capital the economic center of the state and the place where most cross border business lands.
Four parts of the local economy shape what a site must achieve:
- Freight and fulfilment: the trimodal freight village (GVZ) and the A4 and A71 motorways bring distribution work; the site has to win quote requests and fill driver and warehouse roles.
- Children's media: KiKA broadcasts from the city and the Goldener Spatz festival is held here; studios need a portfolio that a commissioning editor can scan in two minutes.
- Visitors: the Old Town, the Krämerbrücke and the cathedral square draw guests from abroad; hotels and restaurants need English content that works on a phone.
- Government and higher education: ministries, three universities and the Willy Brandt School bring an international population of staff, students and visiting experts.
Before any design work, write down the one action your site should trigger most often: a quote request, a booking, an application or a call. That action gets the first screen on mobile, and every other page exists to support it.
02Search intent in Erfurt: who looks for what
Search behavior in Erfurt splits along language as much as topic, so plan pages for each group instead of one generic homepage. The same service is often searched in German by a local buyer and in English by a newcomer.
- Local customers in German: "Steuerberater Altstadt", "Physiotherapie Brühlervorstadt" or "Zahnarzt in der Nähe". Map results dominate these searches, so address, hours and a tap to call button matter most.
- Business buyers: "Kontraktlogistik Thüringen", "warehouse space Erfurt" or "animation studio Germany". These need detailed service pages, references and a short inquiry form.
- Expats and new hires: "English speaking doctor Erfurt", "apartment near Erfurt Hauptbahnhof" or "jobs Erfurt English". Clear English pages with practical details win here.
- Visitors: people coming for the Christmas market on Domplatz or the egapark search for food, rooms and tours, mostly on a phone while walking.
Run a quick check: type your five most important searches on a phone, once in German and once in English, and note what appears on the first screen. Is it the map, directories, ads or company websites?
The gaps tell you where to start. If English searches for your service show only directories and nothing from Erfurt, a well written English page can fill that space faster than a German page competing with dozens of local firms.
03Working with a team outside Germany
A team abroad works well when everything that matters is written down and visible; distance is rarely the real risk, vague scope is. Talha Aslan and team work from Istanbul and run German projects entirely online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Erfurt in summer and two hours in winter, so the working days overlap for most of the afternoon.
Whichever agency you consider, ask these questions and get the answers in writing:
- Language of the project: Will calls run in English, and who writes and proofreads the German pages?
- Scope: Which pages, in which languages, with how many revision rounds, listed item by item in the proposal?
- Previews: Can you open every draft on a live preview link from your own phone, without installing anything?
- Legal pages: Who supplies the Impressum and privacy policy texts, and who handles the technical consent setup?
- After launch: How do you report a problem, through which channel, and is that support part of the written offer?
Also check that an agency's references are real and live. All of our published work is in Türkiye, and we say plainly that we have not completed a project in Germany yet. You can open each site on our references page and test it on your own phone.
04Ownership of domain, hosting, code and accounts
Every key to your website should be registered in your company's name, with the agency added only as an authorized user. That protects you if you change providers, if a freelancer you once hired disappears, or if a dispute ever arises.
- Domain: register the .de domain through a registrar account in your company's name, so that the company appears as the domain holder.
- Hosting: choose a server in the EU, ideally in Germany, sign the contract yourself and conclude the data processing agreement that Art. 28 GDPR requires.
- Code and content: receive a full copy of theme files, images and texts at handover, plus a list of paid plugins and who holds each license.
- Accounts: own the Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics properties; add the agency as a manager and remove it when the work ends.
At handover, ask for an access sheet: which service, which login, where the password is stored and which phone receives the two factor codes. When the person who set things up moves on, this sheet saves days.
Use a shared company e-mail address for registrations rather than a personal one. You can confirm who your domain is currently registered to with our WHOIS lookup.
05The project process, step by step and fully online
An Erfurt project moves through six stages, and each stage ends with something written you can approve or reject. You always know where things stand, even during a busy quarter.
- Kickoff: a 15 minute video call in English or German about your business, your audiences and the languages you need.
- Written scope and quote: page list, languages, responsibility for legal texts and the timeline in one document.
- Sitemap and content plan: which question each page answers, with separate drafts for English and German copy.
- Design: the homepage and one inner page arrive as a preview link; after your sign off the remaining pages follow.
- Build and testing: real phones, slow connections and several browsers; every form sends a test message to your inbox.
- Launch and training: the domain is connected and your team gets a short recorded walkthrough of the content editor.
We schedule calls around your operations: before the first trucks leave, after an edit session, or between hotel check outs. Every stage is visible in our CRM, and approvals are recorded by e-mail.
If you travel to Istanbul anyway, you are welcome to meet us at our office in Ataşehir; nothing in your web design Erfurt project depends on it, and the whole process works from a screen.
06Local SEO in Erfurt: profile, districts and directories
Local visibility starts with a complete Google Business Profile; your website supports that profile but does not replace it. Google's guidelines require the business name to match the real world name, with no added keywords such as the city or the service.
- Category: choose the primary category closest to what you sell, and keep secondary categories to services you really offer.
- Districts: name only the districts you serve; a clinic in the Löbervorstadt might reasonably mention patients from Hochheim and the Brühlervorstadt, but not the whole city.
- German directories: make sure Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and 11880 show the same address, phone number and hours as your site.
- Reviews: ask at checkout or delivery with a small QR card, and reply in the language the reviewer used.
- Service area: if you also cover Weimar, Gotha or Arnstadt, describe that on one clear service area page.
Avoid near identical pages for every suburb with only the place name swapped. Google treats them as doorway pages, and they can drag down the whole site rather than add visitors.
If you want ongoing work on profile, reviews and local pages after launch, we run that through our SEO service; the basic setup is part of every web design Erfurt project.
07Languages: German first, then English or Turkish
For most Erfurt companies German should remain the backbone, even when English is the working language inside the team. Landlords, banks, local suppliers and authorities read German, and the Impressum and privacy policy must work under German law.
English can take the lead, or at least earn its place, in these cases:
- Foreign buyers: shippers and partners outside Germany compare providers in English before they ever call.
- International coproductions: studios pitching to foreign broadcasters or festivals need English project pages with credits and formats.
- Recruiting: graduates and skilled workers from abroad look for English job ads, relocation tips and a clear application route.
- Guests: Thüringer Tourismus GmbH names Switzerland, the USA and the Netherlands as leading source markets for foreign visitors.
A Turkish version pays off for businesses whose customers include Erfurt's Turkish speaking community, such as insurance, real estate or catering services.
Technically, each language lives on its own URLs, and hreflang annotations link the versions to each other and to themselves. We explain the setup on our multilingual website page. Write each language from the reader's questions instead of translating sentence by sentence.
08Speed, EU hosting and security
A fast site keeps the visitor who checks you on a phone between meetings or on the tram; Google measures this with Core Web Vitals. A page counts as "good" when 75 percent of visits stay within these thresholds:
- LCP: how long the largest visible element takes to load; 2.5 seconds or less.
- INP: how quickly the page responds to a tap or click; 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS: how much the layout jumps while loading; 0.1 or less.
To get there, images are served as WebP in sizes that match the screen, video loads only when someone presses play, and unused plugins and scripts are removed. For a studio with a heavy showreel, a compressed poster image in front of the player makes the biggest difference.
Host fonts on your own server rather than loading them from Google. It is faster, and in January 2022 the Munich Regional Court (LG München I) awarded damages because a site sent visitors' IP addresses to Google Fonts without consent.
For security, insist on SSL, current software, backups stored away from the server, and two factor login for the admin area. Ask at handover whether a restore from backup has actually been tested.
09Sector examples for Erfurt companies
Each type of business common in Erfurt needs its own page structure; use these examples as a starting list when you brief an agency.
- Logistics and fulfilment providers: warehouse and transport services, coverage maps, certifications, a short quote form and recruiting in German and English; see our logistics company website page.
- Media and animation studios: project pages with broadcaster, format and credits in a fixed layout, a showreel that loads on demand, and a contact route for coproduction inquiries.
- Hotels and guesthouses: room pages, walking distance to the Hauptbahnhof and Domplatz, a visible booking button and English content for guests from abroad; more on our hotel website page.
- International employers: an English careers area with roles, team photos, relocation information about Erfurt and a mobile application form.
- Consultancies and research spin offs: service pages that explain methods in plain English, short case descriptions and named contacts.
Whatever the sector, the first screen should answer three questions: what you do, for whom, and how to reach you with one tap. If a draft of your web design Erfurt project fails that test, fix it before adding any further pages.
10Legal basics for a website in Germany
A company site run from Erfurt falls under German law regardless of the language it is written in or where the parent company sits. The list below is a general overview, not legal advice:
- Impressum: § 5 DDG requires business sites to show name, address, contact details and, where applicable, register and VAT identification numbers on an easily reachable page.
- Privacy policy: any site that processes personal data needs a GDPR compliant privacy policy that names forms, maps and analytics tools individually.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, cookies and tracking that are not strictly necessary may only run after the visitor consents.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) covers many consumer facing online shops and services; micro enterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and no more than 2 million euros turnover or balance sheet, are exempt. Check whether it applies to you.
- Online sales: § 312j BGB requires the order button to state the payment obligation, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", and consumers must be informed about their right of withdrawal.
If you plan to sell online, our e-commerce page covers the technical side. Have the final texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt); we handle the technical implementation.
11Relaunching without losing rankings
When you replace an existing site, the main risk is not the new design but the old URLs that Google already knows. Every old page needs a permanent 301 redirect to its closest equivalent on the new site.
- List every URL of the old site, using the page report in Search Console and the old XML sitemap.
- Mark pages that receive visits or external links; their content must survive the relaunch.
- Map each old URL to a new one, and send pages without a match to the nearest topic page rather than bulk redirecting to the homepage.
- Review the new site on a password protected staging address before launch.
- On launch day, test the redirects live and submit the new sitemap in Search Console.
Watch the 404 report in Search Console for several weeks afterwards. Our free redirect mapping tool helps match old and new URL lists.
If you also change domains, for example moving from an international .com to a .de, use the change of address tool in Search Console and keep renewing the old domain for years. Update the link in your Business Profile, in directories and on LinkedIn on the same day.
12Common mistakes on Erfurt company websites
Some mistakes appear again and again on small and midsize company sites, and most are quick to fix once you see them. Each one below comes with a better alternative:
- English only: local customers, landlords and authorities cannot follow; keep German key pages and the legal texts in German, even if English leads.
- Machine translated German: awkward copy signals carelessness to German buyers; have a native speaker edit every German page before launch.
- Tracking before consent: analytics and embedded maps that load immediately break § 25 TDDDG; set up a consent banner and load maps only on click.
- Autoplay showreels: a full video on page load slows mobile visitors; use a poster image and load the video on demand.
- Job ads as PDFs: applicants on phones give up and search engines cannot read them properly; publish each role as its own web page with a short form.
- Outdated hours: hours that change around the Christmas market or public holidays should be updated on the profile and site the same day.
Use this list as a five minute audit of your current site. If two or more items apply, a structured relaunch may cost less effort than patching each issue separately.
13What drives the budget
Price depends on scope, not on the city; a company in Erfurt chooses from the same packages as one in Istanbul. These are the factors that move a quote up or down:
- Number of languages: each additional language means pages written, reviewed and kept up to date separately.
- Page count and types: a five page consultancy site and a studio site with twenty project pages carry very different workloads.
- Functions: booking, online ordering, application forms or a shop need extra development and testing.
- Content production: whether texts, photos and video come from your team or have to be produced.
- Ongoing care: updates, backups and content support after launch.
Compliance and performance cost least when planned from day one; adding consent management, local fonts and accessibility fixes later usually takes more time.
Ask every agency to price the same page list so the quotes are comparable. Our fixed packages and what they include are listed in the pricing section of our web design page. A sensible start for a web design Erfurt project is often German and English core pages plus the legal pages, with portfolios or shop features added once the first inquiries arrive.
14The first 90 days and your next step
Launch day is the start of the work; the adjustments made in the first three months decide whether the site brings in business. A simple plan looks like this:
- Weeks one and two: verify Search Console and analytics, test every form and the call button on a real phone, submit the sitemap.
- Month one: add fresh photos to the Business Profile, ask first customers for reviews and align directory entries.
- Month two: review which searches bring visitors in each language and answer questions the pages still leave open.
- Month three: count inquiries by source, strengthen the page that converts most and rework pages nobody visits.
We can review results with you on a short monthly call, so changes are based on data rather than guesses. Plan seasonal updates such as Christmas market hours or summer closures into the same calendar.
Before you contact any agency, answer three questions: what single result should the site deliver within a year, who checks the German copy, and who has time to supply content? If those answers are clear, the first call will be short and useful.
To start your web design Erfurt project, a few sentences about your business are enough. Write to us through our contact form; we will discuss languages, pages and legal texts on a video call and then send a written scope and quote.
