This guide is for founders, managers and international professionals in Aachen who are planning a new website or replacing one that no longer works: research spinoffs, engineering firms, relocation and advisory services, hosts and shops with customers on both sides of the border. Good web design Aachen projects are decided long before the first mockup, in choices about audiences, languages, German legal pages and who owns which account.
We, Talha Aslan and team, have ordered those choices the way they come up in a real project. Each section gives you something to check, decide or ask any agency you are talking to.
01What a Website Has to Do in Aachen's Economy
In Aachen a website usually has to persuade a technical reader, reassure a local customer and welcome a visitor from across the border, often on the same domain. Destatis counted 262,670 residents at the end of 2024, a mid sized market, yet the catchment reaches into the Netherlands and Belgium through the Euregio Meuse Rhine, which the City of Aachen describes as about 3.7 million people on roughly 11,000 square kilometres.
The university shapes the market more than the population figure suggests. Provisional IT.NRW data show 44,490 students at RWTH Aachen in the winter semester that started in autumn 2024, close to the 45,627 at the University of Cologne, a city several times larger. Add 13,492 students at FH Aachen and you have a city where engineers, researchers and young hires are a large part of every company's audience.
Before any design work, write down which job the site must do first. In Aachen it is typically one of these:
- Win technical buyers: explain what the product solves, for whom, and how to request a pilot or a demo.
- Hire talent: show the team, the projects and a short application path that works in English.
- Serve local and border customers: calls, bookings and directions for people from the city, the StädteRegion and the neighbouring countries.
- Reach investors and partners: a clear company story, milestones you can verify and a contact person.
The job you rank first decides the first mobile screen of the homepage and the conversion you measure later.
02Who Searches for What in Aachen
Search behaviour in Aachen splits by language, by neighbourhood and by season, so one generic homepage rarely matches what people type. International students and staff search in English, locals search in German with a district name, and neighbours use their own name for the city: Aken in Dutch, Aix-la-Chapelle in French.
Even searches for web design Aachen itself show the pattern: some people type it in English, others in German. Collect real queries before you plan pages. Typical patterns look like this:
- English service searches: "English speaking dentist Aachen", "tax advisor for expats Aachen", "flat cleaning near RWTH Melaten".
- German searches with a district: "Steuerberater Burtscheid", "Elektriker Brand", "Fahrradwerkstatt Pontviertel".
- Cross border searches: "fietsenmaker Aken" from Vaals or Kerkrade, "traiteur Aix-la-Chapelle" from the Liège area.
- B2B searches: engineering services, test benches or software by technical term, often with no city name at all.
- Event driven searches: hotels near the Soers during CHIO, the equestrian show held from late June into early July.
The B2B group matters most for spinoffs. A buyer looking for a specific measurement method will not type a city, so those pages need precise technical wording, while the city name belongs on pages where location really affects the decision. Mixing both on one page usually serves neither reader.
03Working With a Partner Based Outside Germany
An agency outside Germany can deliver web design Aachen companies rely on, provided the process is written down and visible at every step. Distance is rarely the problem; vague scope is. Your first call should tell you exactly how work, approvals and handover will run.
Ask these questions before you sign anything:
- Is the scope written: page list, languages, who supplies the legal texts, number of revision rounds and the timeline in one document?
- Is there a live preview: can you open the design on your own phone on a test address, rather than reviewing flat images?
- Do meeting hours overlap: Istanbul is one hour ahead of Germany in summer and two hours in winter, so calls fit a normal German working day.
- Who writes the German: is the German copy written or reviewed by a native speaker?
- Are references real: are the projects shown live, and who built them?
Our own honest answer to the last question: we have not yet delivered a project in Germany, and every live reference of ours is in Türkiye. That is why we list each German requirement line by line in the written scope and ask you to have the legal texts reviewed by a Rechtsanwalt. What is included in our web design service is listed on the service page.
04Owning Your Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Every part of your website should be registered to your company, with the agency added as an authorised user only. This protects you if you change agency, sell the business or part ways with a cofounder who set things up.
Use this checklist for an Aachen company site:
- Domain: the .de domain is registered through a registrar in your company's name; if Dutch customers matter, secure the .nl version in your name too.
- Hosting: a data centre inside the EU, on a contract with you or one that can be transferred to you without friction.
- Code and content: theme, custom code, images and texts are yours at handover, with backups stored where you can reach them.
- Google accounts: Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics belong to your account; the agency gets manager access.
- Repositories: for spinoffs with custom features, the code repository sits in your organisation, not a developer's personal account.
A simple test: if your agency disappeared tomorrow, could another team take over within a week? If not, request the missing access now. Under Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO in German) you also need a data processing agreement with your host and with tools such as booking or newsletter software; you conclude it directly with each provider.
05Our Project Process, Step by Step and Fully Online
Projects with Aachen companies run entirely over video calls, a written scope and our CRM, and each step closes before the next one starts. Our team works from Istanbul and every project in Germany runs fully online; if you happen to travel to Istanbul, you are welcome to meet us at our office in Ataşehir, but no step ever requires it.
- Discovery call: we talk through your audiences, the countries they come from, the site's first job and what already exists.
- Written scope: page list, languages, legal pages, integrations and dates in one document for your sign off.
- Structure and content: we map the menu, the purpose of each page and the copy plan for German, English and any Dutch entry page.
- Live preview: the design opens on a test address, so your team can review it on real phones and laptops.
- Testing and launch: speed, forms, consent banner and redirects are checked before the site goes live.
- Training and handover: we show your team how to edit content in a recorded session and hand over all access in writing.
Every stage is visible in the CRM, so nobody has to send an email to ask where something stands. Approvals are recorded in writing as well, which keeps decisions traceable when several people at a spinoff or a lab are involved.
06Local Search in Aachen Without Doorway Pages
For customers nearby, your Google Business Profile does more than any page on the site, and the site's job is to confirm what the profile says. The business name must match the name on your door or letterhead, with no added keywords, and categories, opening hours and service area should be complete.
Aachen has seven administrative districts: Mitte, Brand, Eilendorf, Haaren, Kornelimünster and Walheim, Laurensberg and Richterich. People often search with smaller names such as Burtscheid, Frankenberger Viertel or Forst. Mention only the places you really serve, inside normal sentences.
- No copied town pages: rather than near identical pages for Würselen, Herzogenrath, Stolberg and Eschweiler, state clearly on the service page that you work there.
- Consistent listings: name, address and phone in Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and the site should match character for character.
- Review requests: send a short message with your review link after each job, never with a discount or gift attached.
- Replies in the reviewer's language: answer German reviews in German and English or Dutch reviews in that language where you can.
Service area businesses, such as a cleaner who works at clients' homes, may hide their address on the profile. If you want ongoing local optimisation, our SEO service covers it separately from the build.
07English, German and Dutch: Choosing the Languages
For most Aachen companies German remains the base language, because authorities, banks, local customers and the legal pages expect it; English and Dutch are added for specific readers. Spinoffs selling internationally may lead with English, but even they need German legal pages and usually a German version of the core offer.
Decide language by language with these criteria:
- English: needed if you hire internationally, sell to research buyers abroad or serve the student and researcher community.
- Dutch: worth a short entry page if Dutch speakers regularly call, visit or order from you.
- French: consider it when customers from the Liège area are a visible share of your business.
- Turkish: useful for practices, advisers and retailers whose clients read Turkish more comfortably.
Visitors from the German speaking part of eastern Belgium are already served by your German pages. Each language belongs on its own URLs, linked with hreflang, where every version references the others and itself; you can draft the tags with our hreflang generator. Our multilingual website page explains the structure in more depth. A translation widget on top of one page confuses both readers and Google, and it hides the effort you put into the content.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Most searches in Aachen happen on phones, so build for mobile first and meet Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds, measured at the 75th percentile of visits. LCP, the time until the main content appears, should be 2.5 seconds or less; INP, how fast the page responds to a tap, 200 milliseconds or less; and CLS, how much the layout jumps while loading, 0.1 or less.
On the technical side, ask for these points:
- EU hosting: servers in Germany or another EU country, with a processing agreement in place.
- Local fonts: fonts served from your own server; loading Google Fonts from Google without consent led to a damages ruling by the Munich Regional Court on 20 January 2022.
- Light media: images in modern formats such as WebP at the size actually displayed, and no autoplay video on mobile.
- Updates and backups: regular software updates and backups stored in a separate location.
- HTTPS and form protection: the whole site on HTTPS and spam protection that does not rely on tracking.
For a deep tech company, speed has a second meaning: product pages full of diagrams and test videos must still load quickly. Compress figures, load heavy media only when a visitor opens it, and keep datasheets as downloads rather than embedding everything on one page.
09Aachen Sector Patterns From Labs to Guesthouses
Aachen's mix of research, border trade and heritage tourism decides which pages deserve the most attention. The patterns below describe typical needs derived from the city's profile, not stories of real clients.
Research spinoffs and deep tech: lead with the problem you solve and the industries you serve, then offer a pilot request, a team page with backgrounds and a careers section. Publications and datasheets support the claim without crowding the main page. Our startup website page covers the structure.
Engineering and software firms: application pages per industry, downloadable references and a contact path to a named engineer work better than a generic form. If you need a customer portal or a configurator, it belongs in a custom software plan rather than a template.
Relocation, tax and legal advisers for internationals: English service pages written for someone who just arrived, with plain explanations of the German process and a clear first appointment option.
Hosts and restaurants around the cathedral: the cathedral and old town bring guests all year, CHIO adds a summer peak and the Christmas market a winter one. Rooms, menus and directions must read well on a phone in English and German.
Firms active across the Rhineland: if you also serve Bonn, the patterns on our web design for Bonn page show how research driven organisations present themselves there.
10German Legal Basics, Even for an English Website
A website run by a company in Aachen falls under German rules even if most of its pages are in English; the language of the content does not change the duties. The points below are a general overview, not legal advice.
- Impressum: under § 5 DDG business websites must show the company name, address, contact details and register data; regulated professions add their chamber, job title and professional rules.
- Privacy policy: processing personal data requires a GDPR compliant privacy policy that names forms, maps, booking tools and analytics.
- Cookie consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and tracking may only load after the visitor consents.
- Accessibility: the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) has applied since 28 June 2025 to many consumer facing online shops and services, with an exemption for micro enterprises providing services; check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: the order button must make the payment obligation explicit, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen" (§ 312j BGB), and consumers need cancellation information.
For B2B sites selling only to businesses, some consumer rules do not apply, but the Impressum, privacy and consent duties still do. We build the technical side; please have the texts checked by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
11Relaunching Without Losing Search Traffic
The biggest risk in a relaunch is that old URLs disappear and the trust Google has built up for them is lost. A safe relaunch starts with an inventory of addresses, not with the new design.
- Inventory: list every current URL, the pages that bring traffic in Search Console and the pages with external links, such as mentions from university or partner sites.
- Mapping: match each old URL to the closest new one by content; our redirect mapping tool speeds this up.
- Permanent redirects: activate 301 redirects on launch day and avoid chains.
- Hide the test site: protect the preview with a password; Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page blocked in robots.txt.
- Monitor: watch crawl errors and indexed pages in Search Console for the first weeks.
Aachen spinoffs often have links from institute pages, research project sites and press releases. These links are valuable and rarely updated by the people who posted them, so the redirect for each linked URL matters more than for an ordinary page. If you run Dutch or English versions, update their hreflang references to the new URLs too.
12Common Mistakes on Aachen Company Websites
The same handful of mistakes appears again and again on websites in Aachen, and each has a straightforward alternative.
- English only with no German legal pages: the Impressum and privacy policy still apply; publish them in German and link them from every page.
- Product pages written like a paper: buyers leave before the key point; open with the problem, the user and the next step, and move the method to a datasheet.
- Tracking before consent: analytics or ad pixels firing on first load; tie them to the consent banner.
- Ignoring border customers: Dutch visitors cannot find parking or payment details; answer those questions on a short Dutch page.
- Careers page as an afterthought: a single PDF job ad; build a page with the team, the tasks and a short form.
- Outdated hours during events: CHIO or holiday opening times missing from site and profile; add special hours to both in advance.
Check your current site against this list; several points can be fixed this week, without waiting for a new build.
13What Drives the Cost of Web Design in Aachen
Scope, not location, sets the budget for web design Aachen companies commission, and our prices are the same whatever the city or country. Knowing which decisions add work helps you read any quote.
- Number of languages: each language adds copy, review and hreflang upkeep; a Dutch entry page is far lighter than a full Dutch site.
- Content volume: the number of product, application and service pages, and who writes them.
- Integrations: booking, CRM, applicant tracking or demo scheduling tools each add work.
- Online shop: product count, shipping rules per country and payment methods widen the scope.
- Custom features: portals, calculators or configurators are planned as software, separately from the site.
Some things do not raise the cost: being in Aachen, setting up German legal page structure or a consent banner are standard parts of every German site we build. The factor that changes timelines most is readiness of your own content; photos, product descriptions and team details prepared in advance shorten the project noticeably. Launching with what is truly needed and adding languages later keeps the first phase focused.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The first three months after launch show whether the site actually brings enquiries, hires or bookings in Aachen, so treat them as a planned phase. Google needs time to assess a new site or changed URLs, so do not judge results by the first weeks alone.
- Month one: submit the sitemap in Search Console, align the Business Profile with the site and test that consent based measurement works.
- Month two: review which languages, districts and queries bring visits; expand the Dutch or English pages if they draw interest.
- Month three: refresh the most visited pages, add new team members or publications, and prepare content for CHIO or the Christmas season.
- Ongoing: record where each enquiry came from, form, phone or map, so later decisions rest on data.
Three answers make a web design Aachen project move quickly: who your readers are and in which language they read, which job the site must do first, and who will review the legal texts. If one of them is still open, clarifying it together is part of the first call. Compare the fixed packages in our pricing section, then send us a note through the contact form; we will set up a video call in English or German and follow up with a written scope and quote for your web design Aachen plans.
