YouTube Channel Hacked: How to Recover It Step by Step

Talha Aslan 18 min read 2 views

YouTube channel hacked: what should you do first?

A hacked YouTube channel is one where someone without permission has gained access to a linked Google Account. Recover or secure that account first, then undo the unauthorized changes on the channel, and then turn on 2-Step Verification. We cannot promise an outcome, but the right order helps.

Panic is normal here. Still, rushed and random attempts can make things worse, so follow this order:

  1. Check your Google Account from a clean device, ideally one you trust.
  2. If you can sign in, change the password and sign out of all sessions.
  3. If you cannot sign in, start the Google account recovery flow.
  4. Restore the channel name, picture, and description.
  5. Remove videos and live streams that you did not upload.
  6. Review everyone who has access to the channel.
  7. Turn on 2-Step Verification and update your recovery details.

The steps below follow the YouTube Help page on hacked channels and the Google Account help page on compromised accounts. Menu names change over time, so look for the relevant section in your own settings.

This is also why the order matters. However, the channel is an extension of the Google Account behind it. Because of that, if the account door stays open, every fix you make on the channel can disappear again.

In our experience, the most common mistake is fixing the banner first. The attacker is often still inside, so they simply change it back. Secure the account, and then clean the channel.

How can you tell your channel was really taken over?

According to the official help page, a hacked channel means at least one Google Account tied to it is compromised. For example, the signs usually show up as changes you did not make. For example, the profile picture, the description, or the email settings change on their own.

In a typical YouTube channel hacked case, these are the signs we see most often:

  • The channel name or picture suddenly turns into a famous brand or person.
  • Also, a live stream promising a crypto giveaway starts on your channel.
  • Your videos disappear or turn private, and unknown videos appear instead.
  • Your Google password changes and the old one stops working.
  • You get a sign-in alert from a device you do not recognize.
  • Your AdSense link or sent messages change without your knowledge.

If even one of these matches, do not wait. However, a single odd notification does not always mean a takeover. Checking your account security costs you nothing, so do it anyway.

Also remember that a teammate or manager may have changed a setting on purpose. Check who has access first, and then decide whether this is an attack.

What if you can still sign in to your Google Account?

Then you hold the biggest advantage. A YouTube channel is protected by the linked Google Account, not by a separate password. When you secure the account, you close the door to the channel as well.

Google's security page suggests these checks:

  1. Open the recent security events in your security settings.
  2. Then look at your device list and sign out of any device you do not recognize.
  3. Change the password right away, and change it on any site where you reused it.
  4. Turn on 2-Step Verification.
  5. Then review third party apps with access to your account and remove the ones you do not know.
  6. Check your Gmail forwarding rules and filters.

You can use our password generator to create a long, unique password. Also, a separate password for every account lowers the risk of a repeat takeover.

So forwarding rules look small, but they matter. An attacker can send your verification and alert emails to another address, so you never see the warnings. Also check your saved payment methods, and contact your bank if you see something odd.

YouTube channel hacked and you cannot sign in: what now?

If you cannot sign in, use Google's account recovery flow. The official page tells you to answer the verification questions and then create a strong new password. Keep in mind that this recovers the Google Account, not the channel itself.

During recovery, keep these points in mind:

  • Use a device and network that Google has seen you use before.
  • Also, answer the questions as accurately as you can.
  • Then try the last password you remember, even if it is old.
  • Check your recovery email and phone for messages.
  • Finally, never share a verification code with anyone.

For more detail, read our guides on Google account recovery from a previous device and recovering a hacked Gmail account.

However, until recovery finishes, you may not be able to act on the channel at all. That is frustrating, but being patient is the right strategy. Once you are back in, sign out unknown devices and then start the channel cleanup.

What is a session cookie, and why is a new password sometimes not enough?

A session cookie is a small record your browser keeps so it remembers that you are signed in. If malware copies it, an attacker can look like you without knowing your password. This is general knowledge, and the YouTube help pages do not go into detail on it.

So changing the password alone may not always be enough. First sign out of all devices, and then change the password. After that, scan your computer with trusted protection software.

YouTube's channel security page also recommends antivirus software and Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome. If you opened a suspicious file, stop signing in to your accounts from that computer. Otherwise you can lose your new password as well.

In short, clean the device first and then repair the account. Because if you reverse that order, the attacker can walk back in.

In what order do you undo unauthorized changes on the channel?

The official page tells you to revert unwanted changes without delay. Content posted on a hacked channel can bring Community Guidelines or copyright strikes onto your channel. The table below summarizes the main areas to check.

AreaWhat you doWatch out for
Channel name and handle.First, set them back to your original name.Take a screenshot of the changed version first.
Profile picture and banner.Upload your original files.Remove any fake brand images.
Description and links.Delete scam links and text.Open every link field one by one.
Privacy settings and playlists.Restore your own choices.Check videos that were made private.
Custom thumbnails and subscriptions.Remove what you do not recognize. The subscription list may have changed too.
AdSense and content management links.Confirm the linked account is yours. If payment details changed, contact the right help channel.
Users with channel access.Remove everyone you do not know.Review Brand Account managers as well.

You can adapt this order to your own channel. However, fixing content first and appearance second is usually safer.

Also, keep notes as you go. Write down the date, the time, and the field you restored. A short list like this saves time when you explain the incident later.

YouTube channel hacked and a fake upload went live: what do you do?

Capture evidence first. Save screenshots of the video, the stream title, and the description, because you will want them when you write to support. Then end the stream.

First, the cleanup page says you should delete videos you did not upload when they carry no strike or claim. So the rule is clear: do not leave unauthorized videos on your channel.

The situation changes when those videos carry a Community Guidelines strike or a copyright claim. In that case the official page tells you to contact YouTube and start an investigation instead of deleting them yourself. That way, the reason for the strike stays on record.

  • Unauthorized video without a strike: delete it.
  • Video with a strike or claim: contact YouTube before you delete it.
  • Live stream: end it and keep the evidence.
  • Scam links: remove them from the description and pinned comments.

If a live stream is still running, closing it comes first. Because every minute can send new viewers to the scam link. If you are unsure about deleting something, pause and read the official page again, because a wrongly deleted video can remove the record that an investigation needs.

YouTube channel hacked and videos deleted: can you get them back?

We cannot say for sure. The official help pages do not describe in detail how to restore videos that a hacker deleted. So be careful with anyone who tells you that they will definitely come back.

Instead, the practical path is this: if you have the original files, upload them again. Then rebuild the titles, descriptions, and thumbnails from your own archive. View counts and comments may not return, so accept that from the start.

If you can contact support, ask about the deleted content as well. However, an answer is not guaranteed. So take a preventive step: keep the original of every video on a separate drive and in a cloud account.

To reduce the same risk in the future, build a backup habit. For example, keep project files, the final video, and thumbnails in a separate place. After an incident, re-uploading then takes hours instead of days.

What happens to strikes on a hacked channel?

Content posted on a hacked channel can bring a strike to your channel. That is why the official page stresses reverting changes quickly. Also, the longer you wait, the bigger the risk becomes.

If you received a strike for a video you did not upload, tell YouTube. The official page points you to contacting YouTube and starting an investigation for such videos. However, we cannot promise how an appeal ends.

Removing a normal copyright strike is a different process. We covered it in our guide on how to remove a YouTube copyright strike, so we will not repeat it here. This article is only about a hacked channel.

To show that a strike came from the attacker, a timeline helps. Explain the moment your password changed, the date of the unauthorized upload, and the time you reacted. Also, stick to facts and avoid exaggeration.

How do you reach YouTube support, and what are the limits?

The official page mentions Creator Support for members of the YouTube Partner Program. That support covers only recent incidents because of the data retention policy. So always check the current window on the official page.

If you are not in the partner program, follow the guidance on the help pages. We do not write an exact button name here, because menus change. Then find the relevant section in your settings and fill in the form there.

Keep these details ready when you apply:

  • The channel name and channel address.
  • The date and time when you noticed the takeover.
  • Screenshots that show the changes.
  • The Google Account you recovered.
  • A list of everyone with access to the channel.

These details make your request clearer, though they do not guarantee approval. Also send one clear message instead of many. Because filling in several forms for the same issue does not speed up the process.

Honestly, your options shrink for incidents outside the support window. That is why acting as soon as you notice the problem matters.

Why do owner and manager roles matter on a Brand Account?

A Brand Account lets several people manage a channel without tying it to one person. More people with access also means a larger attack surface. If one manager's account gets stolen, the channel can suffer too.

The official pages tell you to remove users you do not know and to ask your channel managers to secure their own Google Accounts. However, we did not find a detailed role permission table on those pages. So verify role names and buttons in your own settings.

We also suggest this principle:

  • Give the owner role to as few people as possible.
  • Give agencies and freelancers the lowest level of access they need.
  • Remove departing staff on the same day.
  • Ask every manager to use 2-Step Verification.
  • Review the list of people with access every three months.

That way, even if one account gets stolen, the damage stays limited. Many people who report a YouTube channel hacked incident only learn later that it started with a teammate's account.

If you work with an agency or an outside editor, put the access arrangement in writing. For example, note who does what, which account they use, and when the access ends. Also give each person access through their own account instead of one shared password.

How do fake sponsorship files take over a channel?

Be careful when a brand offer arrives with a "product brief" or a "contract" attached. Because the file can be malware that steals the session data in your browser. As a result, the attacker enters your channel without ever asking for a password.

YouTube's channel security tips tell you to verify brand deals by calling the company at its publicly listed number. They also say that YouTube will never ask you for your password or account details.

  • Do not open unexpected attachments or download links.
  • Verify the sender through the official contact details on the brand's site.
  • Refuse executable files and requests to install "tracking software".
  • If you opened a suspicious file, stop using that device.
  • Clean the device before you change any password.

As a general warning, do not treat files named "game", "demo", or "campaign brief" as normal documents. Instead, real brands usually work with links or plain documents. If you see an unexpected installer, stop.

The session cookie logic described earlier is general knowledge. Also, we do not point to any specific file type or software. What matters is that you never open an executable file from an unknown source.

Should you trust people who ask for money to recover your channel?

No. Strangers who message you with "we will get your channel back" are very often scammers. Recovering an account for money is not a legal or safe route. These people may also ask for your password or a verification code.

Keep these warning signs in mind:

  • People who ask for payment in advance and guarantee a result.
  • Anyone who asks for your password, verification code, or recovery details.
  • Accounts that message you as if they were YouTube staff.
  • People who ask for your ID through an unsafe channel.
  • Anyone who says they will fix it "from the inside" by entering someone else's account.

We cannot guarantee a recovery either. The right route is to follow the official YouTube and Google flows. In a panic, people want to buy a quick fix, and scammers know it. So treat every urgent offer with a deadline as a red flag.

Can you bypass the problem with a new account or a fake document?

No, and you should not try. Opening a new account to dodge a restriction, submitting a fake document, or using someone else's account counts as an attempt to bypass the systems. It can make your situation worse.

Besides, a new channel does not carry over the subscribers and videos of the old one. So a new account does not solve the real problem. It only adds a second problem.

The right approach is to recover the old account, clean up the damage on the channel, and apply through official support when needed. It can move slowly. However, staying inside the rules protects you in the long run.

A fake ID or document also carries legal risk. We do not recommend these methods and we do not help with them.

What should your security checklist look like after recovery?

The job is not finished when the channel comes back. You need to close the door so nobody walks in the same way again. YouTube's security pages suggest the following steps.

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification, and use a passkey where possible.
  2. Update your recovery phone and recovery email.
  3. Turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome.
  4. Run up to date protection software on your computer.
  5. Remove unnecessary apps connected to your account.
  6. Review the list of people with channel access on a regular schedule.
  7. Use a different, long password for every account.

A passkey lets you sign in with the fingerprint or face recognition on your phone. It gives strong protection against phishing. Still, check which methods your account offers on the official security page.

Do not do the checklist once and forget it. Review connected apps, authorized people, and recovery details every three months. For example, if your phone number changes, update the recovery number right away.

If you work as a team, keep the checklist in a shared document. Then a new teammate follows the same rules.

What mistakes do people make most often during recovery?

The most common mistakes come from steps taken in a panic. They slow the process down and raise the risk.

  • Fixing the channel first and skipping the Google Account.
  • Signing in again from the suspicious device before cleaning it.
  • Deleting videos with strikes before asking for a review.
  • Submitting the recovery form again and again with inconsistent details.
  • Handing over a password to strangers who offer a paid service.
  • Changing only your own password and not checking the managers.

Another common mistake is to keep no record. Writing down which step you took and when helps both in a support request and in a review with your team.

To avoid all of these, the order is simple: device, account, channel, team. Write it on paper and work through it.

What should you tell your viewers and partners?

If a fake stream or scam post went live on your channel, viewers may have been hurt. So once you regain control, share a short and honest community post. Describe what happened without exaggeration.

  • Say that the channel was taken over for a while and that the content did not come from you.
  • Tell viewers not to click the links in that content.
  • Remind them to be careful with anyone who offers to recover accounts for money.
  • Send a brief note to your sponsors.
  • Check your monetization status separately.

Do not forget the income side. Our guide on YouTube monetization requirements helps you review eligibility. The YouTube money calculator gives a rough loss estimate, but that figure is only an example calculation.

Skip the technical details in your announcement. A short, calm message that takes responsibility is enough. Trust comes from telling the truth, not from being perfect.

Should you check your other social accounts on the same day?

Yes. Accounts that share the same email or password may be at risk too. So when your channel gets taken over, review your Instagram, TikTok, and email accounts as well.

Each platform has its own recovery process. For Instagram, read our guide on an Instagram account that was hacked. For TikTok, see a permanently banned TikTok account and how to appeal. We do not repeat those topics here.

Check the website link in your channel description as well. The attacker may have added a harmful address. If the browser shows a red warning on your own site, look at our article on the Chrome dangerous site warning.

Put your email account first. Email is the password reset key for all your other accounts. Someone who loses their email can lose other accounts within hours.

Which proof of ownership can you prepare in advance?

In recovery and support requests, the goal is to show that you own the channel. The official page does not give a fixed list of documents. So collect the natural traces you already have. A fake or edited document is never an option.

  • First, the email address and phone number you used when you created the channel.
  • Also, the original files of the first videos you uploaded.
  • Then the channel address, the old channel name, and the rough creation date.
  • The device and location you previously signed in from.
  • AdSense or partnership records tied to the channel.
  • The names and roles of the people with access to the channel.

Preparing this list in advance saves you time if you ever face a YouTube channel hacked emergency. For example, original video files can be a strong trace that you produced the channel. However, we cannot guarantee that such details will be accepted.

Which precautions should you take before a takeover happens?

The best recovery is the one you never need. A YouTube channel hacked once is a lesson in prevention. Precautions are usually boring, but they work. The table below summarizes the risk areas and the preventive step for each.

Risk areaPrecautionHow often
Weak or reused password.Use a separate, long password for each account.Set up once, renew after a leak.
Single step sign in.Turn on 2-Step Verification and a passkey.Set up once.
Suspicious attachments.Do not open unexpected files, and call the brand. With every offer.
Former users with access.Remove departing people. At every departure.
Connected apps.Delete access you do not need.Every three months.
Recovery details.Keep phone and email current. When something changes.

None of these precautions is expensive. Time and discipline are enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a hacked YouTube channel back?
We cannot give an exact time. It depends on whether you can recover the Google Account, how much damage the channel has, and YouTube's own review. Account recovery is usually the first step, and the channel comes back after it. Check the current process and time limits on the official help page, because no outcome is guaranteed.
Can I recover my channel if I cannot sign in to my Google Account?
First you need to recover the Google Account, because the channel is tied to it. In the official recovery flow you answer verification questions and then create a new password. Once you are back in, you undo the changes on the channel. There is no guarantee, but accurate details help your chances.
Will my videos come back if a hacker deleted them?
The official help pages do not describe restoring deleted videos in detail, so we cannot promise it. The safest path is to upload the original files from your own archive again. If you can reach support, ask about the deleted content too, but do not assume the answer will be positive. Views and comments may not return.
Does a strike on a hacked channel go away?
There is no guarantee. If a video you did not upload gets a strike or claim, the official page tells you to contact YouTube and start an investigation. Do not delete those videos yourself. The outcome depends on the platform's decision. The best step is to report the situation quickly and keep clear records.
Is someone who asks for a fee to recover my channel trustworthy?
No. Do not pay strangers, and never give them a password or verification code. Offers to recover accounts for money are very often scams. Entering someone else's account, using fake documents, and opening a new account to bypass a problem also break the rules. Use only the official YouTube and Google flows.
