What Is AEO and How Do You Do It? Steps to Rank First in Answer Engines

Talha AslanTalha Aslan 17 min read 2 views

Every week a client asks me what is AEO and whether it replaces the SEO work we already do. Short answer: no, it sharpens it. I have chased featured snippets since 2012, and the same discipline now decides who gets quoted in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini. In this guide I explain the method step by step, with sources, so you can apply it yourselves.

What is AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI chat tools select it as the direct answer to a question. In practice, it means a question heading, a 40 to 60 word answer right below it, supporting detail, visible sources and clean technical access. Nothing more exotic than that.

So when people ask what is AEO compared with yesterday's snippet work, why does everyone treat it as a new discipline? Because the surfaces changed. A featured snippet, an AI Overview and a ChatGPT citation all pull the same kind of passage: short, factual, self contained. Therefore, the skills you built for snippets transfer almost one to one. Instead, what changed is the reward: the click matters less, the citation matters more.

In this guide I will show you how I pick questions, how I write the answer paragraph, how I structure the page and how I measure results. Also, I will point out the shortcuts that waste money, because I see agencies selling them every month.

What is AEO vs SEO, and where do they differ?

Classic SEO targets a ranking position for a keyword; AEO targets the answer box for a question. Both rely on the same crawl, index and quality systems. However, the content unit differs: SEO optimizes a page, AEO optimizes a passage. That is the single most useful distinction I can give you.

The table below compares the three terms you keep hearing. I include GEO because clients mix them up constantly, and the mix up leads to bad purchasing decisions.

CriterionClassic SEOAEOGEO

In short, the rows overlap far more than they differ. That overlap is good news for anyone who already publishes solid content.

Are AEO, GEO and classic SEO the same thing?

Ask what is AEO, what is GEO and what is SEO, and you get three lenses on one job: make your page the most useful, most quotable source for a question. Classic SEO gets you crawled, indexed and ranked. AEO shapes the passage that gets pulled into an answer. GEO adds brand consistency so a language model connects your name to the topic.

Google settled part of this debate in its own documentation. Its guide on optimizing for generative AI features states that SEO best practices continue to be relevant because generative features are rooted in the core Search ranking and quality systems. In other words, there is no separate algorithm to please.

Still, I keep the three words in my proposals because clients ask for them by name. The work plan behind them is one plan. For example, when I rewrite a service page, I fix the question headings, add the answer paragraphs, tidy the schema and check brand mentions in one pass. Then I report on all three surfaces together.

What counts as an answer engine?

To understand what is AEO in practice, define the engine first. An answer engine is any system that returns a direct response instead of a list of pages. The list is longer than most people think:

  • Google featured snippets and People also ask boxes.
  • Google AI Overviews at the top of many results pages.
  • Google AI Mode, the conversational tab inside Search.
  • ChatGPT with browsing, which cites web pages in its replies.
  • Gemini, which draws on Google's index and shows a handful of sources.
  • Perplexity, built entirely around cited answers.
  • Voice assistants that read one result aloud.

Still, each of them prefers a slightly different passage length, but all of them reward the same core: a clear question, a clear answer, a trustworthy source. As a result, I optimize once and then check every surface, rather than producing a separate page per engine.

How do answer engines choose which pages to quote?

Google is unusually explicit here. Its AI features and your website document says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: no new machine readable file, no AI text file, no special schema.org markup. Visibility follows the normal controls, meaning robots.txt, noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet.

The generative AI guide adds what the systems like: unique content that reflects first hand experience, organized under clear headings, written for people. Additionally, it lists what does not help, and the list matches what I see in the field: llms.txt files, custom AI markup, artificially chopping content into fragments and rewriting pages only for AI.

Meanwhile, outside Google, the picture is similar but noisier. The Semrush AI Visibility Index from June 2026, based on 126 million prompts, found that ChatGPT shows about 15 sources per answer while Gemini shows around 3. Consequently, Gemini is the tougher room to enter. On both platforms, Wikipedia, Reddit and YouTube take the most citations, so your page competes with community content, not only with rivals.

Why does AEO matter right now?

Because the click is shrinking while the citation is growing. Ahrefs published a study in April 2025 covering 300,000 keywords with Search Console data: on informational queries with an AI Overview, the top ranking result lost 34.5 percent of its click through rate year over year. The same team refreshed the numbers with December 2025 data and reported a 58 percent drop.

Meanwhile, the surface itself keeps expanding. The Semrush AI Overviews study, covering more than 10 million keywords, tracked the share of queries with an overview from 6.49 percent in January 2025 to 24.61 percent in July, settling near 15.69 percent in November. The mix also shifted: informational queries made up 91.3 percent of overview triggers in January and only 57.1 percent by October, so commercial and transactional searches now trigger overviews far more often.

Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search volume would fall 25 percent by 2026 as generative tools become substitute answer engines. I treat that as a forecast, not a fact, because the industry still argues about how much of it materialized. Even so, the direction is clear enough to act on.

Example calculation: a query with 10,000 monthly impressions and a 30 percent top position CTR brings 3,000 clicks. Apply the 34.5 percent drop and you keep about 1,965 clicks. If your page becomes the cited source, the brand exposure inside the overview offsets part of that loss, though nobody can promise the exact share.

Which questions should you target for AEO?

Target questions people actually type or say, in the form they use. I build the list from four places, and I do it before writing a single heading:

  1. Search Console, filtered for queries containing "what", "how", "how much" or "which".
  2. Google's People also ask boxes for your main keyword, expanded three levels deep.
  3. Autocomplete for the question starters in your language.
  4. Customer emails, WhatsApp messages and sales call notes, because those questions are unfiltered.

Next, I sort the questions by pattern. "What is" questions want a definition. "How do" questions want steps. "Which is better" questions want a comparison table. "How much" questions want a range with a source. Matching the pattern to the format is half the work.

Finally, I check keyword balance with the keyword density tool, because a question focused draft often repeats the topic phrase far too often. Aim for a natural rhythm, not a quota.

How do you write a direct answer paragraph?

Start with the definition or the method in the first sentence, keep the whole paragraph between 40 and 60 words, and add the source in the same breath if you cite a number. That single paragraph is what a snippet, an overview or a chatbot lifts. Everything after it is support.

For example, compare two openings for the heading "How long does SEO take?". The weak version: "SEO is a long journey and every business is different, so before we answer we need to look at several factors." The strong version: "SEO typically takes three to six months to show measurable movement for a mid competition keyword; in my projects since 2012, the first page results usually arrive between month four and month eight." The second one answers, so it wins.

My writing routine looks like this:

  1. Turn the question into the H2, word for word if possible.
  2. Write the first sentence as the answer, not as a lead in.
  3. Stay within 40 to 60 words.
  4. Attach source and date to any figure.
  5. Put detail, exceptions and examples in the next paragraph.
  6. Run the passage through the readability checker and cut anything above a grade 9 level.

Also, preview the title and description with the SERP preview tool, because the answer paragraph and the meta description often end up saying the same thing, and that is fine.

How do you structure a page for AEO?

Use a repeating block: question as H2, direct answer, then detail, then a list or table where the format fits. The block gives an engine a clean boundary to extract. Google's documentation on featured snippets confirms that a snippet click scrolls the reader to the exact section, so each block must stand on its own.

In practice, three snippet shapes exist, and the question pattern tells you which one to build. The table below is the cheat sheet I keep next to my keyboard.

Question patternBest snippet typeIdeal lengthExample H2
What is X?Paragraph.40 to 60 words. What is AEO?
How do you do X?Numbered list.5 to 8 steps, one line each. How do you write a direct answer paragraph?
Which is better, X or Y?Table.4 to 6 rows. What is AEO vs SEO?
How much does X cost?Paragraph with range.40 to 60 words plus source. How much does SEO consulting cost?
Why does X happen?Paragraph plus bullets.50 to 70 words. Why does AEO matter right now?

Instead of hiding the table deep in the page, place it right after the answer paragraph of the comparison section. Engines and readers both find it faster.

Does FAQ schema still work for AEO?

FAQ schema no longer produces rich results in Google Search. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 and removed the FAQPage documentation on 15 June 2026. Therefore, the old recipe of "add FAQ markup, get AEO" is dead. The FAQ content itself, however, is still valuable.

Why keep writing FAQs then? Because a well written question and answer pair is exactly the passage shape answer engines quote. The markup was only a display bonus; the text was always the asset. On my own site I still publish an FAQ block under each article, with 40 to 70 word answers, and the schema is generated automatically without me touching it.

Put simply, do not pay anyone for FAQ schema as an AEO service. Pay for real questions with real answers, and let the markup be an afterthought.

How important is structured data in AEO?

Structured data helps an engine confirm who wrote what, when and on whose behalf; it does not by itself earn an answer slot. Google's AI documentation says no special markup is required. Still, Article, Organization and Person schema make your entity easier to resolve, and entity clarity matters for GEO style brand mentions.

Therefore, my rule is simple: the markup must match visible content. If the schema says the author is Talha Aslan, the byline must say it too. If the schema lists a date, the page must show the same date. Otherwise, mismatches invite manual actions and confuse the very systems you want to impress.

You can build clean Article and Organization blocks with the schema generator in a few minutes. Then validate it, deploy it and forget about it; the content still does the heavy lifting.

How do E-E-A-T signals affect answer engines?

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust decide whether an engine risks quoting you. Google's generative AI guide names first hand experience as a positive signal, and every AI visibility study I have read shows the same pattern: sources with a named author and a track record win more citations than anonymous pages.

In practice, I add four things to every client site. First, a real author page with a photo, a role and a history, like my own about page. Second, a byline and a last updated date on every article. Third, at least one sentence per section that could only come from doing the work. Fourth, a references page that lists real clients.

Above all, cite your sources inside the text, with the name and the date, the way I do in this guide. A model that reads "according to Ahrefs in April 2025" can verify the claim; a model that reads "studies show" cannot.

Is your page technically ready to be an answer?

Before any writing, confirm that the page can be crawled, indexed and snippeted. Otherwise the best paragraph in the world stays invisible. Google's own documents make the controls explicit, so run through them one by one:

  • robots.txt must allow Googlebot and, if you want ChatGPT citations, the relevant AI crawlers; generate a safe file with the robots.txt generator.
  • No noindex tag on the page, obviously, but check templates and staging leftovers.
  • No nosnippet or data-nosnippet around the answer paragraph; a low max-snippet value can also prevent a snippet from forming.
  • Redirect chains resolve in one hop; test them with the redirect checker.
  • Core Web Vitals in the green on mobile, since most question searches happen on phones.

Likewise, page experience also counts for the human who lands after the citation. If your layout buries the answer under pop ups, the click you finally earn bounces. A clean template from a proper web design project pays off here more than any plugin.

How do you update existing content for AEO?

Rewrite what already ranks between positions 4 and 12 for a question query; that is the cheapest win available. Specifically, Search Console shows you these pages in five minutes, and the fix rarely takes more than an hour per page. Here is my routine:

  1. Open Search Console, Performance, and filter queries containing "how" or "what".
  2. Keep the rows with an average position between 4 and 12 and at least a few hundred impressions.
  3. Find the section on the page that answers that query.
  4. Change the heading into the exact question.
  5. Insert a 40 to 60 word direct answer right under the heading.
  6. Add a source and a date to any number in the section.
  7. Update the last modified date and republish.

After that, wait two to four weeks and check the query again. In my experience, the position often moves before the snippet does, because the clearer passage improves relevance first. Meanwhile, resist the urge to touch ten other things on the page; you want to know what caused the change.

What is AEO measurement, and how do you track success?

AEO measurement combines Search Console data, manual answer checks and brand demand, because no single report isolates answer engine traffic. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the "Web" search type in the Performance report; there is no separate AI filter. So you build the picture yourselves.

This is the dashboard I keep for clients. It is deliberately low tech.

IndicatorWhere to lookCheck frequency
Question queries in positions 1 to 3.Search Console, query filter.Weekly.
Snippet or overview ownership for top 20 questions.Manual search, incognito, mobile.Every two weeks.
Citations in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.Ten fixed prompts run by hand or with a tracker.Monthly.
Branded search volume.Search Console, brand query filter.Monthly.
Direct and referral traffic from AI domains.Analytics, source report.Monthly.

Above all, the important shift is mental: a page that loses 30 percent of clicks but gains the citation may still be winning, if branded searches and direct visits rise. Report both numbers together, or the conversation with your manager goes badly.

What are the most common AEO mistakes?

Many teams learn what is AEO from sales decks, so the most expensive mistake is buying a shortcut that Google has publicly declared useless. I see the same five errors in almost every audit:

  • Relying on an llms.txt file as if it were a ranking lever; Google says it is not needed.
  • Chopping articles into tiny fragments "for AI", which destroys the context an engine needs.
  • Pasting a generic FAQ block on every page, including pages where nobody asks those questions.
  • Stuffing the current year into every heading, which dates the page within months.
  • Delaying the answer with two paragraphs of throat clearing before the actual point.

Also, a subtler mistake is the meta description that promises an answer the page never gives. Check the pair with the meta tag generator and make sure the description mirrors the first answer paragraph. Otherwise, you win the impression and lose the trust.

Likewise, avoid rewriting pages purely for machines. The guide is explicit: write for people, organize clearly, and the AI features follow.

Where should a small business start with AEO?

Once you know what is AEO, start with the ten questions your customers ask before they buy, and answer them on pages you already own. You do not need a content team for that. Below is a seven day starter plan, labeled as an example, that I have used with local service businesses:

  1. Day 1: list twenty customer questions from emails, calls and WhatsApp.
  2. On day 2, check Search Console and People also ask, then pick the ten with real demand.
  3. Then, on day 3, map each question to an existing page or decide a new page is needed.
  4. Day 4 is for writing: produce ten direct answer paragraphs, 40 to 60 words each.
  5. Next, on day 5, add headings, sources, dates and one table or list where the pattern calls for it.
  6. Day 6 covers the technical checklist: run it and fix robots, snippet tags and redirects.
  7. Finally, on day 7, publish, record baseline positions and set a reminder for a review in four weeks.

Before you hit publish, run a ten point check: question H2, answer paragraph, table or list, author box, date, sources, Article schema, internal links, no nosnippet, readable on a phone. That is the whole system. Everything else is refinement.

When do you need professional help with AEO?

In short, bring in a specialist when your site has more than fifty pages competing for questions, when a competitor owns most of the answer boxes in your niche, or when you need results within a quarter. A structured SEO consulting engagement covers question research, answer writing, schema and measurement in one plan rather than as separate purchases.

I work without intermediaries, so the person who audits your site is the person who writes the plan and the person who answers your messages. If you want to discuss whether AEO fits your situation, send me the domain through the contact page and I will tell you honestly where the gaps are, even if the answer is "you can do this yourselves".

In short, what is AEO in one sentence? It is SEO with the discipline of answering the question first. Do that consistently, cite your sources and keep the page technically clean, and the answer engines will find you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AEO in simple terms?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of shaping content so that Google, voice assistants and AI chat tools pick it as the direct answer to a question. It relies on question headings, short answer paragraphs, visible sources and clean technical access. It builds on classic SEO rather than replacing it, and no special file or markup is required.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO targets a ranking position for a keyword and optimizes the whole page; AEO targets the answer box for a question and optimizes a single passage. Both depend on the same crawling, indexing and quality systems. In practice, AEO is a stricter writing discipline layered on top of normal SEO: question first, answer second, detail third.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Not quite. AEO focuses on being selected as the answer in snippets, People also ask boxes and AI Overviews. GEO, generative engine optimization, focuses on being mentioned and cited inside answers produced by ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. The techniques overlap heavily, so most projects treat them as one plan with two reporting views.
What should I do to appear as a source in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?
Publish unique content with first hand experience, organized under clear question headings, with a direct answer under each one and named sources for every figure. Keep the page crawlable, without nosnippet or noindex tags, and maintain a real author page. Google states there are no extra requirements beyond normal SEO, and AI chat tools reward the same qualities.
Is adding FAQ schema enough for AEO?
No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in May 2026 and later removed the documentation, so the markup alone no longer earns anything visible. The FAQ content still matters because question and answer pairs are exactly the passage shape answer engines quote. Write real questions with 40 to 70 word answers and treat the schema as optional.
How long does it take to see AEO results?
For pages already ranking between positions 4 and 12, a rewritten question heading and answer paragraph often moves within two to four weeks. New pages usually need two to four months to earn snippets or overview citations. Citations in ChatGPT and Gemini take longer and are less predictable, so measure monthly and judge trends rather than single checks.
