Google Ads AI Max for Search: What It Is, How It Works and When to Turn It On

What is Google Ads AI Max for Search?

Google Ads AI Max is a one-click optimization layer you switch on inside an existing Search campaign. It bundles search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion, so your ads can reach relevant queries beyond your keyword list. It is not a new campaign type; your Search campaign stays in place.

I have been running paid search strategy since 2012. Lately, the question I hear most from clients is simple: "Google keeps recommending AI Max. Should we turn it on?" My honest answer is that it depends on the account. So in this guide I explain what the feature actually does, where it earns its keep and where it can leak budget.

In practice, everything here is based on the official Google Ads Help documentation and Google's own announcements. You will also find the setup path, the reporting views, the experiment workflow and the timeline for the automatic Dynamic Search Ads upgrade. Finally, I share the 30-day routine my team uses after launch.

Is AI Max a new campaign type?

No. Google built AI Max as a set of features you enable within a Search campaign. In other words, your budget, bid strategy, ad groups and keywords all remain where they are. AI Max simply adds matching and asset automation on top of that structure.

First, Google announced the feature in May 2025 as a global beta. Then, in April 2026, it marked the first anniversary with new controls. For example, Google introduced an "AI Brief" powered by Gemini, with messaging, matching and audience guidelines. However, those guidelines roll out first for English AI Max Search campaigns, so not every account sees them yet.

In practice, this means you do not need to rebuild your account to try AI Max. On the other hand, a weak structure does not get fixed by automation. Instead, AI Max tends to amplify whatever is already there. Therefore, it pays to tidy up the foundation first.

One more point worth stating clearly: AI Max runs on the Search Network only. It does not push your budget into Display or YouTube inventory. As a result, the question is not which channel your spend goes to. The real question is which queries and which landing pages receive it.

What features does Google Ads AI Max include?

Specifically, Google Ads AI Max has three core components. You can switch each one on or off, which lets you test without handing over every lever at once.

  • Search term matching: uses broad match and keywordless technology to find relevant queries that are not in your keyword list.
  • Text customization: writes headlines and descriptions tailored to the query, based on your existing ads, landing pages and keywords.
  • Final URL expansion: sends each user to the page on your site that best matches their intent.

On top of these, you get controls such as brand inclusions and exclusions, locations of interest, and URL inclusions and exclusions. In addition, reporting changes: there is now an "AI Max" match type and a source column. In short, the system automates targeting and ad copy at the same time.

My advice is not to switch everything on the same day. For instance, you could enable search term matching first and watch query quality. Then add text customization, and final URL expansion last. That way you can tell which change caused which result. Still, this stepwise approach is less clean than a proper experiment.

How does search term matching work?

Search term matching reads your keywords, assets and URLs as signals. Based on those signals, it looks for new queries it expects to perform well. According to Google Ads Help, you can also switch it on or off at ad group level; it is on by default.

That said, there is an important safeguard here. If a user's query is identical to an eligible exact match keyword in your account, Google prioritizes that keyword. "Identical" includes spelling corrections, but not plurals or synonyms. This rule is spelled out in the keyword prioritization documentation.

Moreover, your negative keywords still apply when AI Max is on. That makes your negative list more important than ever. If you want a quick refresher on how match types differ, try our keyword match type tool.

How does text customization change your ad copy?

Text customization scans your landing page for marketing messages that fit the query. Then it writes assets that complement those messages. If your existing ad copy is relevant to the query and URL, the new ad may include it.

However, keep two things in mind. First, Google's FAQ says these assets are fully automated, so you cannot fix grammar or wording one by one. Second, when text customization and final URL expansion are both on, pinned RSA assets are not respected.

So if you work in a regulated industry, set up text guidelines before launch. Term exclusions and messaging restrictions help you keep unwanted claims out of your ads. In April 2026, Google also announced text disclaimers for final URL expansion. That feature makes sure mandatory compliance text appears in the ad.

During the first weeks, I read every "Google AI" headline in the asset report. I look for phrases that clash with the brand voice, overpromise, or mention an offer that has ended. Then I turn those patterns into guidelines. This small routine noticeably lifts ad quality.

Where does final URL expansion send your traffic?

Final URL expansion can send a user to a more relevant page than the one in your ad. Also, it needs text customization to work, because the system writes a headline that fits the new page.

For example, imagine a furniture brand that links its "wooden dining table" ad to a category page. AI Max might send someone searching for "six-seater oak table" straight to the matching product page. That can raise conversion rates. On the other hand, traffic could also end up on a blog post, a careers page or a returns page.

So you have two controls. URL exclusions work at campaign level, while URL inclusions work at ad group level. On day one, I exclude careers, blog, privacy and login pages. Also, if your product pages are thin, strengthen them first; our ecommerce product page guide is a good starting point.

What do brand and location controls do?

These controls decide which brand-related searches your ads can appear on. You set brand inclusions at campaign or ad group level, and brand exclusions at campaign level only. Ad group inclusions override the campaign-level list.

In practice, this matters most when you run a separate brand campaign. Otherwise, your generic campaign can soak up your own brand searches and inflate its results. Likewise, if you do not want to appear on competitor brand searches, you can add those brands to the exclusion list.

Specifically, locations of interest are unique to AI Max. They let you target at ad group level based on the place a user is searching about. For example, someone living in Manchester might search for "hotel in Edinburgh". You can route that intent to your Edinburgh ad group. Travel, real estate and multi-location service businesses benefit most from this control.

How is AI Max different from DSA and Performance Max?

Google's FAQ describes AI Max as "an evolution of DSA and Performance Max" with final URL expansion, while keeping the control of Search campaigns. The table below compares the three setups in practical terms.

FeatureAI Max (Search)Dynamic Search AdsPerformance Max

If a query is eligible for both AI Max and Performance Max, Google serves the one with the higher Ad Rank. For identical exact match queries, though, the Search campaign takes priority. Therefore, you need to watch for overlap in your reports when you run both.

Does Google Ads AI Max actually improve performance?

According to Google, advertisers who activate AI Max typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. For campaigns still relying mostly on exact and phrase keywords, the typical uplift is 27%. However, both figures come from Google internal data for 2025 and cover non-retail advertisers.

The April 2026 announcement added another comparison. Campaigns using the full feature suite see on average 7% more conversions or conversion value than those using search term matching alone. That figure is also based on Google internal data.

Let me be straightforward about these numbers. In other words, they are Google averages, not a promise for your account. Also, "similar CPA" means total spend can still rise. For that reason, I never make the call without running our own test. To judge results on profit, know your break-even point first with our ROAS calculator.

Which accounts is AI Max a good fit for?

In my experience, AI Max works best in accounts with solid data and reliable conversion tracking. Consider testing it if the following apply to you:

  • Your account records a steady number of conversions each month, and tracking is trustworthy.
  • Your campaigns run mostly on exact and phrase match, and volume has plateaued.
  • Your site has many well-built product or service pages.
  • Budget is not limited, so the campaign shows no "limited by budget" status.
  • You still rely on Dynamic Search Ads or automatically created assets.

On the other hand, some accounts should wait. Think of an account with broken conversion tracking, a brand-new campaign with very few conversions, or a sector with strict legal copy rules. Google itself notes that AI Max cannot reach its full potential in budget-constrained campaigns. In B2B, intent is narrow and lead quality is critical. So it is usually wiser to get your B2B Search campaign structure right first.

What should you prepare before turning on AI Max?

Above all, AI Max feeds on signals. Poor signals lead to poor results. That is why we complete this checklist before launch:

  1. Verify conversion tracking: primary conversion actions must reflect real business value. Do not set micro goals such as page views as primary.
  2. Check your bid strategy: search term matching, final URL expansion and text customization require conversion-based Smart Bidding. With Manual CPC, the benefits stay limited.
  3. Update negative keywords: review 90 days of search terms and add irrelevant patterns.
  4. Prepare URL exclusions: remove blog, careers, support and legal pages.
  5. Review your budget: make sure the campaign is not held back by budget.

If you are unsure about your conversion goals, read our guide on how to set website conversion goals first. For the budget side, the Google Ads budget calculator gives you a quick framework.

How do you turn on Google Ads AI Max?

According to Google Ads Help, new Search campaigns have AI Max turned on by default. When you create a campaign, you choose the features under the "Keywords and ads" section. So do not rush through that screen.

For an existing campaign, the process looks like this:

  1. Go to Settings under the Campaigns menu and select your Search campaign.
  2. Choose AI Max from the section menu.
  3. Turn on the AI Max settings and tick the features you want.
  4. Switch off search term matching for specific ad groups where needed.
  5. Add brand lists and URL exclusions in the same section.

To use search term matching in an ad group, you first need it on at campaign level. Also, Google notes that Editor and API support arrived gradually. Before making bulk changes, check that your tool supports the AI Max fields.

How do you set up an AI Max experiment?

For most accounts, testing is safer than switching straight on. Google offers a dedicated AI Max experiment flow. Specifically, it splits your existing campaign into two arms: a control arm with AI Max off and a trial arm with AI Max on.

To set it up, go to Experiments under Campaigns and choose "Campaign features and settings", then AI Max. Google says this approach delivers results faster than custom experiments. However, you cannot use this flow if text customization is already on, the campaign targets the Display Network, it uses portfolio bidding, or an experiment is already running. See the AI Max experiments documentation for details.

In the experiment, I care more about profit per conversion than conversion count. For lead generation, we also compare the share of leads that become qualified sales calls in the CRM. After all, form fills can rise while sales quality drops.

Decide the test length in advance, too. In low-volume accounts, two weeks may not be enough. For instance, a service business with few leads per month needs a four to six week window. Reading results too early can make random swings look like success.

What should you check in AI Max reports?

For me, reporting is the most valuable part of Google Ads AI Max. The search terms report now shows a separate "AI Max" match type. In addition, the "Source" column tells you whether a match came from broad match or keywordless technology.

  • Search terms report: the "Search terms and ad combinations" view lists each query together with its headline and landing page.
  • Landing pages report: the "Selected by" column shows whether AI Max chose the URL. You can add inclusions and exclusions directly from here.
  • Asset report: Google-generated assets carry a "Google AI" label in the "Added by" column, with performance shown against spend and conversions.

In its reporting documentation, Google recommends waiting at least two weeks after enabling AI Max before making changes. I only break that rule to exclude clearly irrelevant queries. For a quick health check of the whole account, our Google Ads audit tool makes the job easier.

What are the risks of AI Max?

Like any automation, AI Max trades control for volume. Here are the risks I see most often in real accounts:

  • Intent drift: the system may open up to informational searches with little buying intent.
  • Brand messaging: automated headlines can highlight prices or offers you did not want to promote.
  • Wrong landing page: final URL expansion may send traffic to content pages that do not convert.
  • Brand cannibalization: a generic campaign can capture brand searches you would have won anyway.
  • Higher total spend: more conversions at a similar CPA can still mean a bigger bill.

You can manage most of these with the right setup. Still, none of them drops to zero. So never skip the weekly search terms review. To read buying intent correctly, our guide on finding keywords that drive sales offers a solid framework.

When will Dynamic Search Ads move to AI Max?

In April 2026, Google announced that Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets and the campaign-level broad match setting would be upgraded to AI Max automatically. The original timeline pointed to September 2026. However, in June 2026 Google pushed the DSA date back to February 2027. Automatically created assets and the broad match setting start moving from September 2026.

During the upgrade, dynamic ad groups become standard ad groups, and Dynamic Search Ads become Responsive Search Ads. Google runs a transition period: legacy DSAs keep serving until the new ads pass policy review. The official details are in Google's DSA upgrade announcement.

My recommendation is not to wait for the automatic switch. If you move on your own schedule with your own exclusion lists, you avoid surprises. Google gives advertisers the same advice.

After the move, review the newly created Responsive Search Ads first. The targeting logic of old dynamic ad groups does not always carry over one to one. Also, if you used page feeds or URL rules, map each rule to its new control. That way you catch traffic loss or misrouting early.

How should you manage Google Ads AI Max in the first 30 days?

The first month is when the system learns and you draw the boundaries. Both over-managing and ignoring it cause damage. This is the rhythm we follow:

  1. First week: check search terms daily and exclude only clearly irrelevant queries.
  2. Second week: review the landing pages report and exclude URLs that do not convert.
  3. Third week: compare "Google AI" assets with your own in the asset report.
  4. Final week: compare profit per conversion, lead quality and total spend against the control period.

During this time, avoid frequent changes to your bid strategy or target CPA. After all, every major change restarts learning; so patience pays. Also, raise the budget gradually rather than doubling it overnight. For budget planning, our article on setting a Google Ads budget is a useful reference.

Should your keyword strategy change with AI Max?

Yes, but not in the way many people assume. Some advertisers think keywords stop mattering once AI Max is on. In fact, the system uses your keywords as core signals. As a result, well-chosen keywords point AI Max in the right direction.

I suggest keeping your most profitable queries as exact match. That way, you stay in control of identical searches. Meanwhile, you let AI Max handle broader discovery. Tightly themed ad groups also help final URL expansion pick the right page.

In short, your keyword list may shrink, but it should become more strategic. That said, mapping keywords to the right pages is a separate job. Doing it together with your SEO team strengthens both channels.

Should you run AI Max and Performance Max together?

Many ecommerce accounts run Performance Max next to Search campaigns. However, once AI Max is on, the two may compete for the same queries more often. As noted above, the higher Ad Rank wins, while identical exact match queries go to Search.

My approach is to give each campaign a clear job. For example, Search handles high-intent non-brand queries, while Performance Max covers visual inventory and shopping. Applying the same brand exclusion logic in both also clarifies where brand traffic ends up.

To spot overlap, compare the search terms reports of both campaigns over the same date range. If the same queries spend money on both sides, it is time to redefine their roles. So the question is not which one is better, but how they share the work.

What does AI Max need from your landing pages?

Text customization and final URL expansion work by reading your site. As a result, the quality of your landing pages directly shapes the quality of your ads. Vague headings, thin product descriptions and outdated prices can lead AI Max to write the wrong message.

  • Use one clear main message per page.
  • Keep prices, stock and offers up to date.
  • On service pages, state the scope, process and how to request a quote.
  • Check page speed and the mobile experience.

Put simply, AI Max reads your site like source material. The cleaner the source, the sharper the output. Reviewing your key pages once before optimizing ads will save you real time in the weeks that follow.

Which metrics should you use to judge AI Max?

Google highlights conversion growth at a similar CPA or ROAS. From a business point of view, though, that alone is not enough. That is why I suggest scoring the test on these four measures:

  • Profit per conversion: look at net contribution per sale, not just cost.
  • Share of new queries: track how many conversions come from the AI Max match type.
  • Lead quality: measure the share of leads that become qualified conversations.
  • Brand traffic share: check how much your generic campaign relies on brand searches.

If all four look positive, AI Max is adding real value. If even one gets worse, tighten the relevant control instead of switching the whole feature off. For example, if lead quality drops, narrow the matching first.

What are the most common AI Max mistakes?

I see the same mistakes again and again in the accounts I audit. First, many launch a new campaign without noticing that AI Max is on by default. Second, some enable final URL expansion without a URL exclusion list. Finally, others change the bid target repeatedly during the two-week learning period.

Another common mistake is judging results only by total conversions without opening the reports. However, the "AI Max" match type clearly shows where performance comes from. Also, some advertisers assume their pinned headlines stay pinned. With both asset features on, pinning is not respected.

In short, most mistakes are process errors, not technical ones. A pre-launch checklist, a weekly reporting rhythm and clear success criteria prevent most of them. If you struggle to run these checks consistently, an outside view always helps.

How does my team approach AI Max setup?

Before recommending AI Max for an account, my team and I answer four questions. Is the conversion data reliable? Is the budget limited? Are the site's pages ready for ads? What brand and legal limits apply? If any answer is negative, we fix that first.

Next, we run an experiment on a single campaign and measure the result by profit and lead quality. If it works, we then roll it out step by step. If not, we report why and step back. This keeps the decision grounded in your data, not in Google's recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Ads AI Max cost extra?
No, there is no separate fee for AI Max. The feature runs inside your Search campaign, and you only pay the usual cost per click. However, because AI Max opens up more queries, your total spend can rise. So set a clear budget ceiling and a target CPA or ROAS before you turn it on.
Does AI Max replace keywords?
No, it does not. AI Max uses your keywords as core signals and then looks for relevant searches beyond them. If a query is identical to one of your exact match keywords, Google prioritizes that keyword. Keeping your most profitable queries as exact match therefore keeps you in control while AI Max handles discovery.
Does AI Max work with Manual CPC bidding?
Only in a very limited way. According to Google, search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion require conversion-based Smart Bidding. With Manual CPC, search term matching does not work at all. For that reason, sort out conversion tracking and your bid strategy before you test AI Max.
Are negative keywords respected with AI Max?
Yes, they are. Google's FAQ confirms that negative keywords still apply when AI Max is on. Because the system reaches broader queries, your negative list actually becomes more important. In the first weeks, read the search terms report regularly and add irrelevant patterns so budget does not flow to the wrong searches.
What happens if I turn AI Max off?
All AI Max features are disabled, and campaign performance may be affected. Google says your original settings return if you switch it back on later. Even so, frequent on and off switching disrupts learning. Base the decision on at least two weeks of data, ideally from a proper experiment, so the choice holds.
Will my Dynamic Search Ads move to AI Max automatically?
Yes, Google plans to upgrade them. After the June 2026 update, the automatic DSA upgrade moved to February 2027. Automatically created assets and the campaign-level broad match setting start moving from September 2026. Upgrading earlier on your own schedule, with your exclusion lists ready, reduces surprises.
