This guide is for international companies, expat founders and growing local firms in Herne: logistics operators with partners across Europe, care providers recruiting abroad, consultancies, clinics and hospitality businesses. Web design Herne projects succeed when the site wins a nearby customer within seconds, satisfies German legal duties and still speaks clearly to partners and staff who read English first.
We, Talha Aslan and team, arranged the topics in the order the decisions arrive during a real project. Each section ends with something concrete: a check you can run today, a question for any agency, or a decision worth writing down.
01The Job a Website Does in Herne's Economy
In Herne a website mostly has to make choosing you easy, because alternatives sit only a few streets apart. The Destatis municipal directory for 31 December 2024 lists 155,851 residents on 51.42 square kilometers, or 3,031 people per square kilometer. Gelsenkirchen next door has 2,553 and Bochum 2,462, so Herne is noticeably more compact than its neighbors and customers compare quickly.
The city names healthcare, logistics, mechanical engineering and chemicals as its economic pillars. For an internationally minded business that translates into four audiences with different needs:
- Local customers: they want your district, opening hours and a tap to call number before they scroll.
- Shippers and procurement teams: they look for capacities, certifications, a named contact and a complete Impressum before sending an inquiry.
- Candidates: drivers, warehouse staff, nurses and engineers who may not yet speak fluent German and need to know the working language.
- Visitors: fairgoers and museum guests searching for food, rooms and directions on a phone.
Before any design work, write one sentence per audience describing the single action you want from them. Navigation, homepage blocks and form fields follow directly from those four sentences.
02Search Patterns by District, Season and Language
Because Herne is small and crowded, people narrow searches by district far more often than in sprawling cities. The city has four boroughs, Mitte, Wanne, Eickel and Sodingen, with neighborhoods such as Börnig, Holsterhausen, Horsthausen, Baukau, Crange and Röhlinghausen. Typical German queries look like "Steuerberater Eickel", "Hausarzt Sodingen" or "Spedition Herne Kühltransport", while expats type English phrases such as "English speaking dentist Herne".
The calendar shifts what people look for:
- Early August: the eleven day Cranger Kirmes drew around 3.9 million visitors in 2026, according to the city, and searches for food, parking, taxis and rooms spike around Crange and Wanne.
- Year round culture: the LWL Museum of Archaeology and Culture and the Flottmann Hallen arts center bring guests who rely on maps and opening hours.
- Hiring waves: new warehouse shifts and care contracts trigger job searches like "Lagerhelfer Herne" or "Pflegekraft Herne".
- Relocation moments: newcomers search in English for registration help, insurance, doctors and childcare in their first weeks.
Try this: enter your five most valuable queries on a phone, in German and in English, and note whether maps, job boards, directories or company sites fill the top results. The missing result type tells you which page your web design Herne plan should cover first.
03Hiring a Team Outside Germany Without Surprises
Remote collaboration works when every decision is visible and recorded; distance itself is rarely the problem. Talha Aslan and team are based in Istanbul and run projects in Germany fully online. Istanbul is one hour ahead of Herne in summer and two hours in winter, so a normal German business day overlaps almost entirely with ours.
Ask every agency you consider the same questions and request written answers:
- Records: do you receive a written summary of decisions after each video call?
- Scope: does the proposal list pages, languages, revision rounds and exclusions line by line?
- Access to progress: can you open the current build on a password protected preview at any time?
- German copy: who writes or reviews the German text, and is the formal "Sie" used consistently?
- Cover: who answers if your project lead is on leave and the contact form stops working?
Judge by live work, not slides. Our completed sites are currently in Türkiye, including a freight carrier in Kocaeli and two dental clinics in Istanbul, and they are listed with addresses on our references page. Open a few on your phone, submit a form and see how quickly it responds. Mark German public holidays and Turkish holidays in the shared schedule at the start so approvals never stall.
04Owning Your Domain, Hosting, Code and Accounts
Everything your site depends on should be registered to your company from the first day, not to an agency or a former employee. A common trap: the local domain was registered years ago by a manager who has since left, and untangling that during a relaunch can cost weeks.
- Domain: the .de address held in your company's name at a registrar where you have your own login, with auto renewal on and a shared company inbox as contact.
- Hosting: a data center inside the EU, a contract in your name, and direct access to the control panel and DNS records.
- Code and licenses: source files handed over, usage rights transferred in writing, and font, theme and image licenses registered to your business.
- Google properties: Search Console, GA4 and the Business Profile owned by your account, with the agency added as a removable user.
- Second admin: at least two people with full rights on every account, ideally one of them at headquarters.
Any provider that processes visitor data, from the host to an appointment tool, needs a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR (DSGVO in German). Keep those agreements, an access list and renewal dates in one shared folder so that an audit or a change of agency never depends on one person's memory.
05Our Online Project Process, Step by Step
We run a Herne project in six stages, and none closes without your written approval. Calls take place in English or German, the German copy gets a separate language review, and you follow every task in our CRM.
- Discovery: audiences, languages, competitors in your district and the material you already have; the result is a written page plan with responsibilities.
- Structure: sitemap and core copy come before visuals; you supply the questions customers and candidates ask most often.
- Design: the homepage and one inner page are presented on a live preview, and the remaining templates follow your sign off.
- Build: forms, consent banner, Impressum, privacy policy and analytics are set up on a locked staging server.
- Testing: each language version, common phone sizes, form notifications and speed are checked before the domain switches.
- Launch and handover: a weekday morning go live, then a short screen share training for whoever updates content.
None of this requires travel. If you are in Istanbul anyway, we can hold the kickoff in person at our Ataşehir office, but that is purely optional. On your side, name one approver and one person who checks that the German copy says what you mean. What is included is described on our web design service page.
06Local Search in Herne: Profile, Directories, Reviews
For "near me" searches the Google Business Profile usually appears before any website, so profile and site must show identical name, address, phone and hours. In a city as compact as Herne, the map pack lists competitors almost on top of each other, and the right category often decides the click.
- Name: your real trading name only; Google's guidelines do not allow added keywords such as "Logistics Herne Cold Storage".
- Category: the narrowest German category for your main service plus a few that genuinely fit.
- Service area: a mobile care service or electrician can hide the address and list the districts actually served, for example Holsterhausen, Baukau and Eickel.
- Directories: the same data on Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche and relevant German industry portals.
- Reviews: ask satisfied customers with a direct link and no incentive, and reply in the language of each review.
Herne borders Herten, Recklinghausen, Castrop-Rauxel, Bochum and Gelsenkirchen, and many customers cross those lines daily. Name these towns naturally on service pages rather than cloning city pages that only swap the place name; Google treats those as doorway pages. If you also serve the university city to the south, our web design Bochum page covers that market. Ongoing profile, review and content work is part of our SEO service.
07German First, English Where It Earns Its Place
German remains the main language for any Herne business site, because customers, authorities and banks expect it and the legal texts live there. English pays off when you trade with partners abroad, recruit international staff or serve expats, and only if someone on your team answers English inquiries properly.
- German layer: every service page, the Impressum and the privacy policy; a German reader must be able to decide without any other version.
- English layer: not a literal copy but pages written for its readers, for example a carrier explaining cross border lanes and documents, or a care employer describing recognition of foreign nursing qualifications.
- Turkish layer: worth adding when a share of your customers prefers Turkish and you can reply in it, common for practices, insurance brokers and trades.
Give each language its own URLs, ideally a separate folder, so search engines index and you measure each version on its own. Connect the versions with hreflang annotations: every page references its counterparts and itself. Our hreflang generator builds those tags, and the multilingual website page explains the setup. A translation widget bolted onto the page does not create indexable versions.
08Speed, EU Hosting and Security
Most searches in Herne happen on a phone while people are on the move, and a slow page sends them to the next map result in seconds. Google assesses page experience with Core Web Vitals and calls a page good when at least 75 percent of real visits meet these thresholds:
- LCP, loading: the largest element in the first screen, often the hero image, appears within 2.5 seconds.
- INP, responsiveness: the page reacts to a tap or click within 200 milliseconds.
- CLS, visual stability: the score for content shifting during load stays at 0.1 or below.
During the Kirmes, mobile networks around the fairground get busy; compressed images and few scripts help far more than a bigger server. Remove chat bubbles, duplicate tracking tags and autoplay video unless they clearly pay for themselves.
Host in Germany or elsewhere in the EU and serve fonts from your own domain. On 20 January 2022 the Munich Regional Court I awarded damages against a site that loaded Google Fonts from Google's servers without consent. Write four routines into the maintenance plan: auto renewing HTTPS certificates, updates tested on staging first, daily backups stored elsewhere, and two factor login. For email, correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC records keep your quotes out of spam folders.
09Page Plans for Herne's Logistics, Care and Service Firms
Your industry, more than your company size, decides which pages a site needs. The examples below are general recommendations derived from Herne's economy, not client stories.
- Carriers, couriers and cold chain: according to the city, the expansion of the UPS central depot and the arrival of Duvenbeck and Nordfrost have created more than 1,000 jobs since 2017, part of Herne's role as a European hub for fresh and food logistics. Subcontractors and smaller carriers need fleet and refrigeration capacity, service areas, certificates, a short quote form and driver job ads; the logistics company website page shows a structure.
- Clinics, care and therapy: more than 8,000 people work in health in Herne, and Marien Hospital Herne is a university hospital of Ruhr University Bochum. Practices and care services need plain service pages, districts served, languages spoken and a lean contact form; see the medical center website page.
- Consultancies and B2B suppliers: reference projects described by task, named contacts and downloadable data sheets in German and English.
- Hosts and food businesses: menus or rooms readable on a phone, special Kirmes hours and walking directions from the nearest stop.
Pick the closest item, then add the three questions every new customer or candidate asks on the first call. For a care employer those are usually districts served, languages spoken on shift and how the first visit is arranged; answering them on the site cuts repeat calls.
10German Legal Basics for Your Website
A business operating in Herne follows German and EU rules, and they apply equally to the English pages. What follows is general information, not legal advice; have the final texts reviewed by a German lawyer (Rechtsanwalt).
- Impressum: required under § 5 DDG, the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz that replaced the TMG on 14 May 2024. It lists name, address, legal form, representatives, contact details including email, register entry and VAT ID if available; regulated professions such as doctors add their chamber, legal job title, the state that granted it and the professional rules.
- Privacy policy: whenever forms, booking tools or analytics process personal data, a GDPR compliant Datenschutzerklärung reachable from every page.
- Consent: under § 25 TDDDG, non essential cookies and similar access to devices run only after the visitor agrees; rejecting must be as easy as accepting.
- Accessibility: since 28 June 2025 the BFSG covers many consumer facing online services and shops, with an exemption for micro enterprises offering services; check whether it applies to you.
- Online shops: § 312j BGB requires an order button that states the payment obligation, such as "zahlungspflichtig bestellen", plus withdrawal information for consumers.
Health providers should have marketing claims checked against their chamber's rules and keep first contact forms free of diagnoses or medication details. A US or UK privacy template does not cover German requirements.
11Relaunching Without Losing Search Visibility
A new site keeps its visibility when every old URL that earns visits or links points permanently to its closest new equivalent. District pages that have ranked for years, such as a "Sodingen" or "Wanne" service page, are the first casualties of an unplanned relaunch.
- Inventory: export every URL with clicks and external links from the sitemap, Search Console and a crawler.
- Mapping: decide keep, merge or retire for each page and record its new address in one spreadsheet.
- Staging: protect it with a password; Google cannot read a noindex tag on a page blocked in robots.txt.
- Redirects: direct 301 redirects without chains, never a blanket redirect of everything to the homepage.
- Monitoring: submit the new sitemap and watch 404 and indexing reports for several weeks.
If the domain changes too, keep the old one and use the change of address tool in Search Console. Avoid launching just before the Kirmes or a busy hiring season, when you need calm days to fix surprises. On launch day, open the ten most visited old URLs on your phone yourself, and update links in your Business Profile and directories the same day.
12Common Mistakes on Herne Business Sites
Weak sites usually lose on missing or inconsistent information rather than looks. Each of these six mistakes can be fixed with modest effort:
- English only pages for a German market: local customers and authorities bounce. Better: German as the complete main version, English as a second layer.
- Machine translated German: readers notice at once and trust drops. Better: have core pages written or edited by a native German speaker.
- Phone number inside an image: nobody can tap it and screen readers skip it. Better: plain text with a click to call link.
- Fair hours posted only on social media: the map still shows old times. Better: update the site and the Business Profile together.
- Application forms copied from paper: drivers and nurses abandon them on a phone. Better: name, phone and preferred call time as the first step.
- Stock photos of the Flottmann Gate or generic offices: they say nothing about you. Better: real photos of your team, fleet, premises and work.
13What Drives the Budget
Scope, not city, determines the price; web design Herne projects use the same packages as anywhere else. When comparing proposals, ask each one to break out these drivers:
- Template count: how many distinct page types, such as service, job, team and contact, are designed and coded.
- Languages: writing or adapting each version, plus its own review round.
- Functions: booking, quote calculators, applicant tracking, an online shop or a customer portal.
- Content: whether copy and photos exist or must be produced.
- Migration: how many old URLs need mapping and redirects.
- Maintenance: who handles updates, backups and monitoring after launch.
Preparation is the most reliable way to keep costs down. Arrive at the first call with service descriptions, your own photos and a single decision maker, and revision rounds shrink. A proposal that shows only one total hides what is included; asking for line items is the sound way to compare web design Herne quotes. Also ask how hosting and maintenance are billed from the second year on.
14The First 90 Days and Your Next Step
The first three months show whether the site does its job, so give each month one clear focus:
- Month one, measurement: confirm that calls, form submissions and WhatsApp clicks are recorded in GA4 in line with consent rules, and that Search Console shows no indexing errors.
- Month two, insight: check which districts, languages and queries bring visits; rewrite weak titles and send the first review requests.
- Month three, expansion: add pages answering frequent customer and candidate questions, compare German and English inquiries and decide where your time goes next.
A single language site with a clear scope usually fits one of our fixed packages; see the web design pricing section. Bilingual company sites, online shops and relaunches receive a written quote after a call, showing scope and schedule in one document, so your web design Herne plan has no hidden items.
To begin, send a few lines through our contact form and we will set up a free, no obligation video call in English or German. Bring your five most valuable searches, the districts you serve and the name of whoever controls your domain today, and your web design Herne project becomes a concrete plan in the first meeting.
