What Are TikTok Spark Ads? How to Turn Organic Videos into Ads with an Authorisation Code

What are TikTok Spark Ads and how do they turn organic videos into ads?

TikTok Spark Ads are a native ad format that lets you promote an organic TikTok post, either from your own account or from a creator who authorises you, as a paid ad. Views, likes, comments, shares and follows from the ad count toward the original post, so the promotion looks and behaves like a normal video in the feed.

In this guide I explain TikTok Spark Ads using TikTok's own help documentation. I cover how the authorisation code works, how to choose its duration and how to set up the campaign in Ads Manager. I also list the code errors I run into most often, together with the fixes TikTok recommends.

Most advertisers ask the same question first: which video should I promote? So the second half of this article covers content selection, budgeting and measurement as well. That way you get a decision framework, not just a menu walkthrough.

How do TikTok Spark Ads differ from standard in-feed ads?

With a standard TikTok ad, you upload a video file directly into Ads Manager. That video never appears as a post on your profile, and its engagement stays with the ad. Spark Ads work the other way round. They take a real post that already lives on a profile, add budget to it and keep all engagement on that post.

The table below compares both approaches in practical terms:

CriterionSpark AdsStandard ad
Content sourceAn organic post that is live on a profileA video file uploaded to Ads Manager
EngagementCounts toward the original postStays with the ad, not the profile
Displayed identityThe TikTok account that published the postThe identity the advertiser sets
Creator contentUsable through an authorisation codeThe creator must hand over the file
After the campaignLikes and follows remain on the profileEngagement ends with the ad

In short, this format lets your budget work for sales and for social proof at the same time. On the other hand, it also means the organic version of the video has to be good enough to carry an ad.

When should you choose Spark Ads over a regular ad?

Not every campaign needs this format. In my experience it works best when you already have a video that performs well organically. That video has proven it speaks the platform's language, so the budget simply extends its reach.

I recommend the format especially in these situations:

  • You have a strong organic video: High watch time and a lively comment section usually translate well into paid reach.
  • You work with creators: A video from the creator's own handle feels more personal than one from a brand account.
  • You also want account growth: Follows and likes from the ad stay on the profile.
  • Comments carry social proof: Positive replies under a post build trust with new viewers.

That said, a standard ad can give you more control when you need to state a price, a deadline or technical details precisely. If you want to weigh the broader trade-off first, my article on organic growth versus paid ads is a good starting point.

What is a Spark Ads authorisation code?

An authorisation code is a code that allows a specific TikTok post to be used in ads. TikTok's help centre calls it a post code or video code. The owner of the post generates it in the app and shares it with whoever runs the ads. You then enter the code in Ads Manager and add the video as a creative.

In practice, the biggest benefit is that nobody has to share a password. The creator grants access to one video for a set period and nothing more. As a result, the brand never touches the creator's account, and the creator never sees inside your ad account.

Every code also has an expiry date. Once it passes, the code stops working and Ads Manager shows the error "auth_code_expired". In that case you need to ask the creator to extend the authorisation or generate a new code. In other words, the code duration belongs in your campaign calendar.

Also note that each code belongs to one post, not to the whole account. If you plan to promote five videos from the same creator, you need five codes. Ads Manager lets you add them in bulk; according to TikTok's guide, you can authorise up to 20 video codes at once.

How do you generate a Spark Ads code in the TikTok app?

The post owner creates the code inside the TikTok app. TikTok's guide to Spark Ads for Smart+ campaigns lists the steps like this:

  1. Open the video you want to promote.
  2. Tap the three dots on the video.
  3. Tap Ad settings.
  4. Agree to the advertising content terms of service.
  5. Turn on the Ad authorization toggle.
  6. Choose the authorisation duration and generate the video code.
  7. Copy the code and send it to the person who manages the ads.

In practice, menu labels can vary slightly between app versions and languages. For that reason, I usually ask creators for a screenshot of the screen before they send the code. Receiving the code for the wrong video is a surprisingly common mix-up.

There is also one prerequisite. TikTok asks creators to make sure authorised posts are allowed in their profile settings. If that setting is off, the option to generate a code may not appear at all, so check it before the first collaboration.

How long should the authorisation period be?

According to TikTok's help centre, the ad settings of a post offer durations of 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. Specifically, the right choice depends on how long the campaign runs and what you agreed with the creator.

Here is the logic I use in practice:

  • 7 days: Enough for a short sale or a one-week launch, but it leaves little room for testing.
  • 30 days: The most balanced option for a first test, because it gives the creative time to show results.
  • 60 days: Useful when you want to scale a winning video and open it to new audiences.
  • 365 days: Fits long-term partnerships and evergreen creatives, but the contract must say so clearly.

Above all, do not skip the legal side here. A creator who issues a 365-day code accepts that the video can run as an ad for a full year. Therefore, write the usage period, the fee and the target markets into your agreement. Trouble starts when the code and the contract tell different stories.

A practical tip: add the expiry date to a shared calendar on the day you receive the code. Then set a reminder one week before, so a winning ad never stops without warning.

Can you run Spark Ads without an authorisation code?

Yes, the code is only one of three options. TikTok's Spark Ads creation guide describes three ways to source content. Which one suits you depends on who owns the accounts and how much content you expect.

  • Account linking: You link your TikTok account to Ads Manager and access every eligible post without codes. This is the easiest route for your own brand account.
  • Authorisation code: The creator issues a separate code for each video. This is the cleanest method for one-off collaborations.
  • Push method: You push new posts from Ads Manager to authorised accounts through Business Center. It suits accounts you work with regularly.

Specifically, the guide calls these the pull and push methods. Pull means bringing an existing post into your ad account through the "TikTok posts" tab. Push means sending content from the ad account to an authorised profile through the "Your Library" tab.

If you control the brand account yourself, account linking usually causes the least friction. However, when an agency, a brand and a creator are all involved, codes keep permissions tidy. Whatever you choose, keep a written record of who can access what, and review it whenever a partnership ends.

What should you prepare before launching a campaign?

Getting the account foundations right before the code arrives saves you from losing data in the first days. My checklist is short, but skipping a single item can blur your reporting for weeks.

  • Business account and Business Center: Keep the ad account, the TikTok account and team permissions under one roof.
  • TikTok Pixel or event setup: Sales and lead objectives need your website conversions reported back to TikTok.
  • Landing page: Build one fast, mobile-friendly page that delivers on the promise in the video.
  • Measurement plan: Decide which metric defines success before you spend anything.

In practice, the landing page is the part I see neglected most. For example, showing one product in the video and then sending people to the home page wastes the click. If users do not find what they expected on the first screen, they leave, and the algorithm learns from that too.

To compare results before and after a campaign, try the conversion rate calculator. It turns the quality of your ad traffic into a concrete number. Moreover, running the same calculation for every campaign gives you a comparable data set over time.

How do you set up Spark Ads in TikTok Ads Manager step by step?

Once you have the code, then, the rest happens inside TikTok Ads Manager. Here is a simplified version of the official flow:

  1. Log in to TikTok Ads Manager and open the Campaign tab.
  2. Click +Create to start a new campaign.
  3. Select your advertising objective.
  4. Complete the campaign and ad group settings: budget, audience, placement and bidding.
  5. At ad level, choose a TikTok account as the identity.
  6. In the Ad creatives section, add the video from the "TikTok posts" tab or with the authorisation code.
  7. Set the call to action and the destination URL.
  8. Click Publish all.

Remember to add UTM parameters to the destination URL. Otherwise, all TikTok traffic lands in one bucket in your analytics, and you cannot tell which video drove sales. The UTM builder helps you keep the parameters consistent.

One more warning: TikTok updates the Ads Manager interface often. If a label on your screen looks different, check the current version of the guide. I do the same with every new account.

Which campaign objectives support TikTok Spark Ads?

Specifically, the format supports a wide range of objectives in auction buying. TikTok's official Spark Ads page lists these:

  • Reach
  • Traffic
  • Video Views
  • Community Interaction
  • App Promotion
  • Conversions
  • Lead Generation
  • Sales

With Reach & Frequency buying, the list is shorter: only Reach, Traffic and Video Views are available. So if you want a fixed frequency for a defined audience, you cannot combine that buying type with a sales objective.

Above all, choosing the objective matters even more than choosing the video. If you want followers, Community Interaction makes sense. If you want sales, go with Conversions or Sales and make sure your pixel works. When the objective and the expectation do not match, even a great video delivers poor results.

How does promoting a creator's video actually work?

Above all, the strongest feature of this format is that you can promote a video from a creator's own account. The ad shows the creator's name and profile picture. As a result, viewers read it more like a recommendation than a brand message.

The process usually goes like this. First, you agree on the content and the usage terms with the creator. Next, the creator publishes the video, generates the code in the ad settings and sends it over. Finally, you enter the code in Ads Manager and build the campaign.

TikTok also offers Spark Ads recommendations inside TikTok One, the platform formerly known as Creator Marketplace. Still, whichever tool you use, the key point stays the same: permission and duration must be in writing.

When you pick creators, also look at engagement quality rather than follower count. The engagement rate calculator is built for Instagram, but the same logic applies to TikTok data. If you would like us to handle creator selection, contracts and content planning end to end, have a look at our influencer marketing service; my team and I run these projects together.

Which videos are not eligible for Spark Ads?

Not every organic post qualifies, however. TikTok's error code page shows indirectly which content types fail. These are the cases I see most often:

  • Story posts: This post type is not supported.
  • Non-public videos: The post needs to be publicly visible.
  • Content that breaks community guidelines: A post that fails review cannot run, code or no code.
  • Posts with several video tags: TikTok rejects these with a separate error code.
  • Removed videos: If the creator removes the post after sharing the code, you lose access to it.

Technical limits, on the other hand, are few. According to the official page, there are no restrictions on aspect ratio, resolution, file type or bitrate. However, a video you want to spark can be at most 10 minutes long. In addition, each Ads Manager account supports up to 10,000 Spark Ads.

A privacy note to finish: according to TikTok's guide, a private video becomes public once you use it in a campaign. Make sure the creator knows this.

How do you fix Spark Ads code errors?

In practice, an error after entering a code is rarely serious. TikTok explains every notification and its fix on its Spark Ads code error page. Here are the ones I meet most:

NotificationMeaningWhat to do
auth_code_expiredThe code has run outAsk the creator to extend the authorisation
auth_code_not_foundThe system cannot find the codeAsk the creator for a new code
auth_code_format_errorThe code is incomplete or mistypedCheck the code or generate a new one
not_public_videoThe video is not publicAsk the creator to make the post public
story_video_not_supportedStory posts cannot runPick a different post
user_permission_missingYour user lacks the permissionAsk the account admin for access

Copy errors happen more often than you would think. Codes sent through messaging apps sometimes pick up extra spaces at the start or end. So paste the code into a plain text field first and check it before entering it.

Which metrics show whether TikTok Spark Ads really work?

Next to the usual ad metrics, this format also has its own metric set. TikTok's official page lists paid clicks, music clicks, paid likes, paid shares, paid followers, paid profile visits and paid comments. Anchor clicks and the anchor click rate appear in reports as well.

This split matters because the total engagement on the post mixes organic and paid activity. To see what the ad really contributed, focus on the metrics with the "paid" prefix. Otherwise you may credit organic interest to the ad and overrate your spend.

My core set looks like this:

  • Cost per thousand impressions: Shows how cheaply the creative spreads; the CPM calculator makes this easy to check.
  • Click-through rate: Tells you whether the video sparks curiosity.
  • Paid followers and profile visits: Measure the contribution to account growth.
  • Return on ad spend: Has the final word in sales campaigns; the ROAS calculator helps here.

For the bigger picture of which metric ties to which business goal, see my overview of digital marketing KPIs.

How should you pick the video you turn into an ad?

In practice, most of the success comes down to video selection. Budget does not rescue a weak video; it only shows the weakness to more people. That is why I look at organic data first.

First, I check watch time and completion rate. If people scroll past in the first seconds organically, they will do the same in the ad. Then I read the comments. Questions or praise about the product signal real purchase intent.

I also check whether the video still makes sense as an ad. Humour that works for followers can fall flat for someone who has never heard of the brand. For instance, a video built on an inside joke rarely lands with a cold audience.

Finally, I judge the first three seconds separately. If the opening shows no product, no problem and no strong question, shooting a new version often beats promoting the old one. If you want your content calendar built this way, our social media management service plans organic content with ad data in mind.

How should you plan budget and targeting?

Put simply, there is no separate budget logic for this format. The usual campaign and ad group budget rules apply. Because the content is organic, though, the testing approach changes a little.

I usually launch two or three videos in the same ad group. That way the system shows quickly which one spreads best. Putting the whole budget behind one video means you lose the entire test if that video fails.

On targeting, I advise against narrowing too much at the start. TikTok's algorithm is good at finding people who respond to the content, and very tight interest targeting can slow learning. Later, you can target the segments the data points to in separate retargeting campaigns. My guide on strengthening your sales funnel with remarketing covers that step in detail.

To split budget across channels, you can apply the method from my guide on the social media advertising budget to TikTok as well. And if your audience is still vague, a proper target audience analysis makes every targeting choice sharper.

Can you edit the ad text and call to action?

Partly. Specifically, the display name and ad text come from the organic post you select. According to the official FAQ, you cannot change these fields while creating the ad. TikTok's guide also states that a post's caption cannot be edited once it has been authorised.

The practical takeaway is clear: write the caption with an ad in mind before you publish. Even for organic posts, keep it simple, clear and free of misleading claims. That habit keeps your whole library ready for promotion.

The call to action and destination URL, however, belong to the ad level. So you can add a button leading to your product page under an organic video. TikTok also mentions a feature that makes text edits easier for Spark Ads during setup. Check during setup whether it is available in your account.

Captions may also include emojis, hashtags and account tags. The official page even allows an empty caption, although I rarely recommend that.

What happens to the video after the campaign ends?

Once the campaign stops, the video then stays on the profile as a regular post. The likes, comments and followers it gathered during the ad do not disappear. That is my favourite part of the format: the ad leaves a lasting trace on the account.

If the creator wants to delete the video, there is one extra step. According to TikTok's official page, a video must be unauthorised as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account. So a creator who plans to remove the post after the campaign should know this order.

When the authorisation expires, the ad cannot keep running with that video either. Therefore, if a campaign runs for a long time, note the expiry date in your calendar. Talking to the creator about renewal before the deadline keeps a strong ad from stopping suddenly.

What are the most common Spark Ads mistakes?

Over the years I have also seen the same mistakes repeat across very different TikTok accounts. Most of them come from weak planning rather than technical problems:

  1. Not tying the duration to the contract: A 60-day code with a 30-day agreement invites a dispute.
  2. Mixing paid and organic metrics: Judging the ad by total likes is misleading.
  3. Picking a video with a weak hook: A post that failed organically rarely recovers with budget.
  4. Skipping UTM tags: You will not know which video sold.
  5. Ignoring comments: Ads bring new comments; unanswered negative ones hurt trust.

The last point deserves attention. The ad fills the comment section, and criticism grows with it. To plan how you would react to a negative wave, see the steps in my article on handling a social media crisis.

How does my team manage the Spark Ads process?

When we start TikTok ads with a brand, we first of all review the last three months of organic content. My team and I shortlist videos with strong watch time, meaningful comments and a sharp opening. Then we match each video to the objective it fits best.

If a creator is involved, we put the authorisation period, usage scope and fee into the agreement. After receiving the code, we launch with a small test budget and track paid metrics in a separate sheet. When a video wins, we scale it and log the code expiry in the calendar.

Put simply, the goal is: invest ad spend not only in immediate sales but also in lasting social proof. If you want to plan TikTok ads alongside your other channels, get in touch through our social media management page.

Where should you start with TikTok Spark Ads?

To sum up, this format is the most natural way to scale a video that already works organically. Start by picking the three strongest videos on your account. Then define your objective: followers, traffic or sales.

If you work with a creator, put the code duration and usage terms in writing from day one. Add UTM tags when you build the campaign, and read paid metrics apart from organic ones. That way you see which video really drives business.

Finally, make a habit of writing captions with an ad in mind, because you cannot change them after authorisation. This small discipline keeps your organic content ready for promotion at any time.

One last note from experience: do not expect big results from the very first campaign. The first week is mostly a learning period. The real value lies in finding out which video style resonates with your audience. Feed that insight back into your organic plan, and your next video will already be shot with promotion in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a TikTok Spark Ads authorisation code?
The post owner generates it in the TikTok app. They tap the three dots on the video, open Ad settings, accept the advertising terms, turn on the Ad authorization toggle, choose a duration and generate the video code. They then share the code with the advertiser, who enters it in TikTok Ads Manager to add the post as a creative.
How long can a Spark Ads authorisation last?
According to TikTok's help centre, the ad settings of a post offer durations of 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. For a first test campaign, 30 days is usually a balanced choice. Long-term partnerships can use 365 days, but you should always record that period in the written agreement you sign with the creator.
Do likes from Spark Ads stay on the profile?
Yes, they do. Views, likes, comments, shares and follows from the ad count toward the original organic post. When the campaign ends, the video stays on the profile and the engagement it gathered remains. That is why the format lets your ad spend build lasting social proof as well as immediate results.
Can I run another creator's TikTok video as an ad?
Yes, but only with the owner's permission. The creator generates an authorisation code for that video and shares it with you. You then enter it in Ads Manager and run the post under the creator's identity. Agree on the usage period, fee and scope in writing beforehand to avoid disputes later on.
Why does my Spark Ads code show an error?
The most common causes are an expired code, a mistyped code, a video that is not public and an unsupported post type such as a story. TikTok publishes a separate fix for each error notification. In most cases, asking the creator for a fresh code or picking a different post solves the problem quickly.
Which objectives can I use with Spark Ads?
In auction buying, the format works with Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community Interaction, App Promotion, Conversions, Lead Generation and Sales. With Reach and Frequency buying, only Reach, Traffic and Video Views are available. Choose the objective that matches the business result you expect, not just the metric that looks best.
