TikTok Sales Campaign: How to Set Up the Sales Objective for Website and Catalog Ads

What is a TikTok Sales campaign?

A TikTok Sales campaign is an ad campaign built in TikTok Ads Manager with the Sales objective, optimized to drive purchases on your TikTok Shop, website or app. TikTok merged the old Website Conversions and Product Sales objectives into this single objective, so every purchase-focused setup now starts here.

In this guide I walk you through the decisions that matter most when you build a TikTok Sales campaign. You will see how to pick a sales destination, when a catalog makes sense, how to connect the Pixel and Events API, and how bidding and the learning phase work. I checked the facts against the official TikTok Business Help Center article on the Sales objective. Menu labels change from time to time, so expect small differences in your interface.

How is the Sales objective different from old conversion campaigns?

Previously, you picked Website Conversions to drive purchases on your site. For catalog products, you picked Product Sales instead. TikTok has now combined both under one Sales objective. As a result, you choose the goal first and then decide where the sale should happen.

In practice, this change made setups easier to reason about. I used to audit accounts that sold the same product through two different campaign types, and reporting was scattered as a result. Today the order of decisions is much clearer:

  • First, the purpose of the ad: sales.
  • Next, the place where the sale happens: TikTok Shop, website, app, or website and app.
  • Finally, the campaign type: manual, Smart+ or Search.

That said, your historical campaign data does not disappear. However, new campaigns follow this sequence, so it pays to plan with it in mind.

Which sales destinations can a TikTok Sales campaign use?

According to the official help page, the Sales objective offers four destinations. Each one requires a different setup, so you should choose based on where your customers actually buy.

Sales destinationWhat it doesCore requirement
TikTok ShopDrives sales in the in-app shopTikTok Shop account; no catalog or Pixel needed
WebsiteDrives purchases on your online storeTikTok Pixel, ideally with Events API
AppDrives purchases in your mobile appA product catalog is required
Website and appRoutes each user to the best channelMeasurement on both web and app

TikTok Shop is only available in a limited number of countries. Therefore, for many brands the website destination is the realistic choice. If you run your own online store, most of this article applies directly to you.

Ask yourself one simple question before you choose: where do your customers already prefer to pay? If most revenue comes from your website, build the campaign there. If your app is strong and customers shop there more often, the app or the combined option makes more sense. In short, your ads should feed the channel your buyers already trust.

How do you choose a campaign type for the website destination?

Once you select the website destination, three campaign types appear. The official page on the website sales destination lists them as a manual campaign, a Smart+ campaign and a Search campaign.

  1. Manual campaign: You control targeting, placements, budget and creative. You can also turn on your catalog and link products to the ad.
  2. Smart+ campaign: The system handles most placement and targeting decisions. You still set the goal, the bid, basic location settings and the creatives.
  3. Search campaign: Your ad appears in TikTok search results based on keywords.

For new accounts, I usually recommend starting with a manual campaign. You want to learn which audiences and creatives actually work before you hand control to automation. Once you have data, scaling with Smart+ feels much safer. In other words, the right choice depends on how mature your account is.

One more note from practice. Rather than trying to change the type of a running campaign, I prefer to launch a new one. That way, the old data stays useful as a benchmark.

When does the website and app destination make sense?

Brands that have both a mobile app and a website get a fourth option: the combined website and app destination. Here the system sends each user to the place where a purchase is most likely. If the app is installed, a deep link opens it directly. If not, the user lands on your website instead.

Above all, app users do not need to log in again on the web, which is the biggest advantage. Since they are usually signed in already, checkout tends to be shorter. Moreover, you manage one campaign instead of two separate ones.

However, this option needs more measurement work. The Pixel and Events API must run correctly on the web, and your app measurement must work at the same time. Deep links that open the home screen instead of the product page also hurt conversion badly. For that reason, test a few product links on your own phone before launch.

Should you use a catalog or a single landing page?

A catalog is a TikTok asset that stores product names, descriptions, prices, images and videos. Catalog ads show products automatically based on each user's interests. With a landing page setup, by contrast, you send traffic to one page or one chosen product.

The right option depends on your range and your offer. Here is the split I find useful in practice:

  • If you sell dozens or hundreds of products, a catalog is a strong option.
  • If you sell one hero product or a single offer, a landing page sends a clearer message.
  • If you choose the app destination, a catalog is mandatory anyway.

Feed quality also affects results directly. Missing prices, broken images or out of stock items stop products from showing in ads. That is why I suggest cleaning your product data before you switch the catalog on.

Review is a separate step too. TikTok reviews catalog ads and the products inside your catalog. So instead of building the campaign on launch day, set it up a few days earlier.

How do you prepare a catalog for a TikTok Sales campaign?

First, you create the catalog inside TikTok Ads Manager, under assets. You can add products manually, upload a file or connect a scheduled feed. This way, ads stay current when prices and stock levels change.

These are the catalog mistakes I see most often:

  • Product titles written as internal stock codes.
  • Busy collage images instead of clean product shots.
  • Prices in the catalog that differ from prices on the website.
  • Product URLs that redirect or return errors.

For app catalog ads, the official help page asks for at least four deliverable products, meaning in stock, approved and activated. On the web side, your product pages must also be ready to convert. My ecommerce product page guide gives you a clear checklist for that.

How do Smart+ Catalog Ads work?

Smart+ Catalog Ads combine your catalog with automation. During setup, you pick the Sales objective, the website destination and the Smart+ campaign type. Then you turn on "Use catalog" in the catalog section.

Next, you have three ways to select products. You can use all products, pick a dynamic product set or choose up to 20 specific products. TikTok recommends adding at least six videos. With 20 or fewer products, every video maps to all of them. Above 20 products, the catalog manager tries to match the most relevant products to each video.

Still, automation does not solve everything. If your videos do not show the product clearly, matching stays weak as well. So even with Smart+, treat creative production as a strategic task rather than an afterthought.

What do you still control in a Smart+ web campaign?

In a Smart+ web campaign, placements are automatic and manual placement is not supported. The system also manages most of the targeting. Even so, several decisions remain yours:

  • The optimization goal: Value, Conversion, Landing Page View or Click.
  • The bidding strategy.
  • Basic targeting such as location, language and limited gender settings.
  • The videos and images you upload.
  • Whether the catalog is switched on.

There is one important limitation. Smart+ web campaigns currently do not support mixing Spark Ads and non-Spark ads in the same campaign. Therefore, if you want to test creator videos against your own videos, build them in separate campaigns. For a sales goal, optimizing for purchases almost always beats optimizing for clicks.

Why do you need both the TikTok Pixel and Events API?

With the website destination, the system has to know who bought. The TikTok Pixel and Events API provide that signal. The Pixel sends data from the browser, while Events API sends it from your server. Advanced Matching adds hashed details such as email and phone number to improve match rates.

In practice, a Pixel alone is no longer enough. Ad blockers, browser privacy settings and slow pages can all cause lost events in the browser. A server-side connection reduces that loss. Consequently, the algorithm sees more purchase signals and reaches better audiences.

However, sending the same event from two sources creates a double counting risk. TikTok's event deduplication article asks you to send the same event_id through both channels. Matching events with the same event_id are merged within a 48 hour window. Also, do not skip consent: under GDPR you need a clear basis before you fire marketing tags.

Which conversion events should you set up?

For a sales campaign, the core event is Complete Payment. Even so, sending the steps in between helps the algorithm understand the buyer journey. That way, the system keeps learning while purchase volume is still low.

  1. View Content, when someone opens a product page.
  2. Add to Cart.
  3. Initiate Checkout.
  4. Add Payment Info.
  5. Complete Payment, sent together with value and currency.

Specifically, the detail people miss most often is the value parameter. Without an amount and a currency, value optimization will not unlock. You should also decide how coupons, shipping and tax affect the value you send. Otherwise, you will see constant gaps between the ad dashboard and your accounting numbers.

Should you optimize for conversions or for value?

Conversion optimization tells the system to reach the people most likely to buy. Value optimization, on the other hand, targets the people likely to spend the most. In other words, the two answer different questions.

If your products sit in a similar price range, conversion optimization is usually enough. If your price range is wide, value optimization can be more profitable. For example, if you sell a $10 accessory and a $300 device in the same catalog, not every purchase is equal.

The official page on value-based optimization for web sets a clear threshold. You need at least 20 attributed unique Complete Payment events with value and currency over any consecutive seven days. So you cannot switch on value optimization in a brand new account. First, you collect data with conversion optimization.

How do you choose a bidding strategy for a TikTok Sales campaign?

For conversion optimization, there are two main approaches. The spend-based option, shown as Maximum Delivery or Maximum Results depending on the interface, aims for as many conversions as your budget allows. The goal-based option, shown as Cost Cap or Target Cost per Result, tries to keep your average cost per result near your target.

Value optimization also offers two options. Highest Value tries to spend the full budget while maximizing revenue from purchases. Minimum ROAS asks you to enter the lowest return you can accept. For instance, a bid of 2 means you aim for two dollars of revenue per dollar spent.

In practice, my own routine is simple. I start new ad groups with a spend-based strategy. After a few weeks of data, I tighten efficiency with a cost target or a minimum ROAS. To set a realistic ROAS threshold against your margin, try our ROAS calculator.

How does the learning phase affect a TikTok Sales campaign?

Every new ad group goes through a learning phase. During this period, the system searches for the best audience and results fluctuate. TikTok's learning phase article says volatility typically starts to decline after about 25 results or seven days.

The same article lists actions that restart or extend learning:

  • Pausing a campaign or an ad group.
  • Edits that retrigger the learning phase.
  • Unreasonable budget settings or creative volumes.

The biggest mistake I see is changing everything after three days without results. High costs in this period are often temporary, because the system is still searching. So check before launch whether your budget can realistically get through learning. With a high target cost and a small daily budget, the system may never collect enough results.

If you do need changes, bundle them together. Small daily tweaks keep pushing the system back into learning. Instead, review the data every three or four days and make one clear decision.

How much budget should you allocate?

Put simply, there is no single right number. The logic, however, is simple: your daily budget should be several times your target cost per purchase. Only then does the system see a meaningful number of results each day. Otherwise, learning can drag on for weeks.

Here is how I build the estimate. First, I derive an acceptable cost per purchase from the product margin. Then I multiply it by the number of results needed for learning. This gives a realistic floor for the first test period.

If you want to plan budgets across all social channels, read my guide on how to calculate a social media advertising budget. To compare impression costs, the CPM calculator saves time. In short, work backwards from the results you expect.

What does a TikTok creative that sells look like?

Above all, creative matters more than targeting on TikTok. People see your ad in the feed, between videos from creators they follow. So a video that looks like a classic ad gets skipped in the first second.

Creatives that drive sales usually share these traits:

  • The product or the problem is clear within the first two seconds.
  • The product appears in a real moment of use.
  • Decision details such as price, shipping or warranty are mentioned.
  • On screen text helps people who watch without sound.
  • Several versions with different openings are tested, not just one.

Working with creators can make a real difference here. Turning their videos into Spark Ads is a topic of its own. If you want to set up a proper collaboration model, take a look at our influencer marketing service.

How does your landing page affect sales?

People who arrive from TikTok are almost always on mobile. Moreover, they land in the in-app browser with a short attention span. That is why your page must load fast and deliver on the promise of the video right away.

Specifically, the product from the ad should appear on the first screen. The price should match the video. Checkout should be short as well; guest checkout and familiar payment methods reduce abandonment.

My team and I improve product pages, carts and checkout flows as part of our ecommerce consulting work. No matter how well you build the campaign, a slow and confusing page eats the budget. As a result, half of your TikTok Sales campaign performance is decided on your site, not in Ads Manager.

Here is a practical test. Open your own ad inside the TikTok app on your phone and try to complete a purchase. Note where you get stuck. Very often the problem is something simple, such as a pop-up, slow images or a long form.

How do you measure a TikTok Sales campaign?

First, do not tie your judgement to a single number. The ad dashboard counts sales using its own attribution window. Google Analytics or your store platform counts them with a different logic. Because of this, a gap between the two is normal.

These are the core metrics I track:

  • Cost per purchase (CPA).
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS).
  • Click-through rate and landing page view rate.
  • The drop between add to cart and purchase.
  • The share of new versus returning customers.

To see this traffic separately in your analytics, add UTM parameters to your links; our UTM builder does it in seconds. For a wider view of what each metric really tells you, see my article on digital marketing KPIs.

How do you add retargeting to a sales campaign?

People who viewed your product but did not buy are often your cheapest sales, because they already know you. On TikTok, you can reach them again with Pixel data or catalog ads. This way, someone who left an item in the cart sees that same item again.

However, keep retargeting separate from prospecting. If both sit in the same ad group, the system drifts toward easy sales and struggles to reach new people. So I usually build a two-layer structure:

  1. A prospecting campaign that reaches a broad audience.
  2. A retargeting campaign for product viewers and cart adders.

Do not leave the retargeting audience unlimited either. Showing the same ad for weeks raises costs and wears out your brand. Instead, split the audience by recency and refresh creatives regularly. I explain these funnel layers in detail in my article on strengthening your sales funnel with remarketing.

What are the most common TikTok Sales campaign mistakes?

In practice, the same errors appear again and again in the accounts I audit. Most of them can be fixed before launch.

  • The Pixel does not fire the purchase event, or fires it twice.
  • The purchase event is missing value and currency.
  • Test orders and cancellations are not removed from reports.
  • Optimization is set to clicks instead of purchases.
  • Budget and targeting change constantly before learning ends.
  • One single creative runs for far too long.
  • The price in the ad does not match the price on the site.

There is one more mistake: treating TikTok like Google Ads. On Google, people search with intent. On TikTok, they mostly discover. So you also have to account for users who do not buy on first contact but return later.

Finally, judge results over several weeks, not single days. Daily numbers on TikTok can also swing a lot. For example, one video catching unexpected attention on a weekend can shift the whole week's average.

Which businesses is a TikTok Sales campaign right for?

Products that are easy to show visually and priced for quick decisions sell more easily here. Beauty, fashion, home goods, accessories and practical consumer products fit this group. If your audience is young and spends a lot of time on mobile, the channel makes even more sense.

On the other hand, B2B services with long sales cycles and very expensive products often struggle with a direct sales goal. For these businesses, using TikTok first for awareness and lead generation is more realistic.

The key question is this: can you show your product convincingly in a 15 second video? If yes, start with a small test budget. If not, strengthen your content first. After all, ads on TikTok amplify good videos; they do not rescue weak ones.

Should you manage TikTok ads yourself or get support?

If you start with a small budget and one product, you can also run the first tests yourself. Verifying the Pixel, testing two or three creatives and watching the data is enough at the beginning.

However, once a catalog, Events API, value optimization and cross-channel measurement come into play, the work gets technical. On top of that, steady creative production needs its own resources. At that stage, mistakes usually cost more than professional support.

My team and I manage social media advertising, including TikTok, together with strategy, measurement and creative planning. You can find the details on our social media management page. If you prefer to build the setup yourself, following the order in this guide will help you avoid the most expensive mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need TikTok Shop for a TikTok Sales campaign?
No, you do not. TikTok Shop is only one of four destinations in the Sales objective. You can use the website, app, or website and app destinations without it. Since TikTok Shop is available in a limited number of countries, many brands run their sales campaigns with the website destination and the TikTok Pixel instead.
Can I run a sales campaign without a catalog?
Yes, for the website destination a catalog is optional. You can send traffic to a single product page or landing page and still optimize for purchases. For the app destination, however, a catalog is required. Stores with many products usually get better results from a catalog, because it shows each user relevant items.
When can I use value-based optimization?
For web, value-based optimization becomes available once you collect at least 20 attributed unique Complete Payment events with value and currency within any consecutive seven days. Until then, you gather data with conversion optimization. If your purchase event is missing amount or currency, you will never reach the threshold.
How long does the learning phase last?
According to TikTok, volatility typically starts to decline after about 25 results or seven days. Pausing campaigns, edits that retrigger learning and unreasonable budgets all extend that period. I recommend keeping your budget high enough to pass learning and avoiding reactions to small swings in the first few days.
Is the Pixel enough, or do I need Events API too?
The Pixel works on its own, but you will lose data. Ad blockers and browser privacy settings block some browser events. Events API sends data from your server and reduces that loss. When you use both, send the same event_id through each channel so TikTok can deduplicate the events correctly.
Why do my ad dashboard and store show different sales?
A gap is normal, because the two systems count sales with different rules. TikTok uses its own attribution window, while your analytics tool usually applies another model. Consistent UTM parameters, a correct event_id and a reliable value parameter narrow the gap, but they will not remove it completely.
