Instagram Sleep Mode: What It Is and How to Turn It On or Off

What is Instagram Sleep Mode?

Instagram sleep mode is a time management feature that mutes your notifications and sends an automatic reply to anyone who messages you while it is on. Meta announced it in early 2023 as Quiet mode. The current Instagram Help Center page uses the name Sleep mode for the same feature.

In this guide we explain what the feature does, how to turn it on or off, and how it affects a business account. First, a note on sources. We rely on Instagram and Meta official pages. Menu names can differ by app version, account type and region.

The feature is part of Instagram time management tools. Its goal is to help you step away from the app at set hours. Meta gave examples such as driving or studying when it announced it.

So the feature is simple in idea. However, the details matter, because they decide how your customers feel.

Is Instagram Quiet Mode the same as Sleep Mode?

Yes. Meta's own news page carries the title "Instagram Sleep Mode (Formerly Quiet Mode)". So both names describe one feature. Older articles that mention quiet mode are talking about the same setting.

You will still see people search for "quiet mode", so we mention both names. In your own app, the menu label may differ with your language and version. Look for "Sleep mode" or the closest match.

  • Old name: Quiet mode, used in the 2023 announcement.
  • Current name: Sleep mode, used in the Help Center title.
  • Search terms: quiet mode, sleep mode, do not disturb on Instagram.

What does Instagram Sleep Mode do?

According to Meta, three things happen once it is on. First, you receive no notifications. Second, your profile activity status changes, so people can tell you are away. Third, an automatic reply goes out when someone sends you a DM.

Also, Meta says you get a summary of missed notifications when the feature ends. That way you can scan what arrived in one place. For example, you can mute the app during dinner and still catch up later.

Part of the appWhat happens while it is on
NotificationsMuted, none arrive
Activity statusChanges on your profile
DMsSenders get an automatic reply
When it endsA summary of missed notifications shows

The setting needs no extra app. It lives inside the Instagram time management menu.

Where is Instagram Sleep Mode available?

In its 2023 announcement Meta launched the feature in the US, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It said it planned to expand later. We could not verify a current country list on an official page, so we will not guess.

So the reliable test is your own app. Open the time management section in Settings. If you see the option, your account has it. If you do not, update the app first and look again.

  • Update the app from your store.
  • Check personal and business accounts separately.
  • Do not trust articles that list countries without an official source.

Also, large platforms roll features out in stages. So a friend may see the option weeks before you do. That is normal, and it is not a sign of a problem with your account.

Therefore, treat any country list you see online with care. Instead, rely on the Help Center and on your own screen.

How do you turn on Instagram Sleep Mode?

The Help Center page "Turn sleep mode on or off on Instagram" gives this route. Go to your profile and tap the three-line menu. Open Settings and activity, then tap Time management. Finally, tap Sleep mode and switch the toggle on.

  1. Tap your profile tab.
  2. Open the three-line menu.
  3. Go to Settings and activity.
  4. Tap Time management.
  5. Tap Sleep mode and turn the toggle on.

After you switch it on, you can pick the days and times when your account should be in sleep mode. Set the schedule right away. Otherwise the feature may stay on until you turn it off by hand.

Menu names change between app versions. So look for the meaning of each line, not for an exact label.

Also, take a moment to read every option on the screen. Then you know exactly what the toggle changes.

How do you turn off Instagram Sleep Mode?

Follow the same path and tap the same toggle. Profile, three-line menu, Settings and activity, Time management, Sleep mode. Then switch it off. The Help Center explains turning it on and off under one title.

If you use a schedule, the feature ends on its own when your chosen hours finish. So you do not need to switch it off every morning. Still, if you expect an urgent message, turn it off by hand.

  • Manual: switch the toggle off.
  • Scheduled: it ends when your time window ends.
  • After it ends, read the summary of missed notifications.

Meta says a summary appears when the feature ends. It helps you decide which messages to answer first.

How do you schedule Instagram Sleep Mode?

The Help Center says that once the feature is on, you can choose the days and times for sleep mode. So you do not have to switch it on by hand each night. For example, you can set a window that runs overnight.

First, think about your working hours when you set it. If you run a business account, do not cover the hours when customers write most. Otherwise busy-hour messages only get an automatic reply.

Use caseOur suggested approach
Personal account, nightSchedule it for sleeping hours
Exam or deadline weekSwitch it on by hand, then off
Business accountLeave busy message hours outside the window

You can also use different windows for weekdays and weekends. Options vary by version, so trust what your screen shows.

What does someone see when they DM you in Sleep Mode?

Meta says the sender gets an automatic reply. That reply tells them you are not getting notifications right now. So the sender knows their message was not ignored.

However, we found no detail on the Help Center about editing the reply text. Do not assume you can customize it. If your app shows such a screen, use it. If not, the standard reply goes out.

Also, your activity status changes. The other person can see that you are away. Instagram has a separate Help Center page about activity status.

Also, the automatic reply does not delete anything. The messages stay in your inbox, and you read them later.

For a brand, this matters. Because the customer sees a reply, they may wait calmly. Still, if nobody answers in the morning, trust drops fast.

How does Sleep Mode work on Teen Accounts?

According to the Instagram Help Center, Teen Accounts have sleep mode on from 10PM to 7AM every day. During those hours notifications are muted and automatic replies are on. The teen also sees a reminder to close Instagram.

However, this applies to teen accounts only. For parental supervision and which settings a teen can change, read Meta's Teen Account pages. Meta also says parents can see some settings through Family Center.

  • Default window: 10PM to 7AM daily.
  • Notifications are muted.
  • Automatic replies are on.
  • The teen sees a reminder to close the app.

We only repeat what the official page says here. We add no opinion on parenting choices.

How does Sleep Mode affect a business or brand account?

This part is our assessment, not an official statement. The feature was built for personal focus. On a brand account, it mutes your notifications and sends customers an automatic reply. If nobody else watches the inbox, your response time grows.

So we suggest using it only in hours when nobody is watching anyway. A quiet overnight window is a sensible example. On campaign days, however, leaving it on is risky.

In the end, the value depends on your message volume. A small account with a few DMs a day loses little. A shop with hundreds of messages can lose sales.

For example, a shop that runs ads in the evening can see messages spike after dinner. Then an overnight window only delays those leads. Therefore, check your own message history first.

Does Sleep Mode change your DM response time?

The automatic reply is not a real answer. The customer still waits for you. So your true response time starts when you turn the feature off and open the inbox.

In practice, sleep mode manages expectations. The sender sees that the message arrived and knows to wait. However, that is not enough for urgent topics such as orders or complaints.

For example, take this calculation: the window from 11PM to 8AM is nine hours. A message sent at the start of that window waits close to nine hours for a human reply. The numbers only show the arithmetic. They are not a measurement.

What should you do instead of Sleep Mode for fast DM replies?

In fast-reply industries, a team rota works better than the feature. Assign owners to the inbox and set shift hours. Then customers get a quick answer, even at night.

  • Split the inbox by hour and name an owner.
  • Keep saved answers for common questions.
  • Give an urgent contact route by phone or WhatsApp.
  • Keep sleep mode off on campaign days.

To route people to WhatsApp, our WhatsApp link generator does the job. For the wider messaging picture, read our WhatsApp marketing messages guide.

Also, a short hand-over note helps. The morning shift should see which night messages are still open.

Also, keep your saved answers current. For instance, delivery times, return rules and opening hours come up all the time. Then each person on the rota can answer in seconds.

How is Sleep Mode different from Do Not Disturb?

Your phone's Do Not Disturb works at system level and mutes every app. Instagram sleep mode works only inside Instagram. It also sends an automatic reply to people who message you. The system mode sends nothing to the sender.

CriterionInstagram sleep modePhone Do Not Disturb
ScopeInstagram onlyAll apps

Activity statusChangesDoes not change
Where you set itInstagram settingsPhone settings

You can use both together. However, running both brings no extra benefit. Know which one tells the sender what.

If notifications stop, check both settings. Then you find the real cause quickly.

Does Sleep Mode turn notifications off for good?

No. It mutes notifications only while it is on, then shows a summary when it ends. For a permanent change, edit your notification preferences separately.

Therefore, note that those preferences sit in another part of Settings and activity. There you manage likes, comments and message alerts one by one. Sleep mode adds a temporary layer of quiet on top.

  • Sleep mode: temporary and schedulable.
  • Notification preferences: permanent and per type.
  • Activity status: a separate setting.

Your phone's own notification settings matter too. If Instagram is blocked there, no alert will arrive at all.

What if Instagram Sleep Mode is missing?

First, make sure the app is up to date. Then open Time management and look at every option. On some accounts the feature may sit under another heading.

  1. Update the Instagram app.
  2. Log out and log in again.
  3. Check Time management and Notifications.
  4. Search the Help Center for "sleep mode".
  5. If it is still missing, assume it is not offered in your region yet.

Try the steps in order and reopen the menu after each one. Sometimes cache shows an old screen. If nothing works, treat it as a staged rollout, not a bug.

If you cannot send messages, that is a different issue. Our guide to Instagram DM restrictions covers it.

No messages arriving, could your account be restricted?

No alerts while sleep mode is on is normal. However, if you cannot see messages in the inbox either, something else is going on. That is not about sleep mode.

So open the inbox by hand and check whether messages are there. If they are, the feature works as planned. If not, think about restrictions or access problems. We cover visibility in our Instagram shadowban guide.

  • No alert but messages in the inbox: sleep mode works.
  • No alert and no messages: look for another cause.
  • Cannot send messages: read about restrictions.

One more case is blocked phone notifications. If your phone does not allow Instagram alerts, no message creates one. Check the phone, then the app, then the account.

So work from the simplest cause to the hardest one. First check the phone, then the app, and finally the account.

How do you plan Sleep Mode with social media management?

If a team manages the account, think of sleep mode as a tool for personal phones, not the whole brand. A brand inbox runs on a team schedule. So write down who looks at it and when.

When we work with clients, we agree reply hours at the start. We read account insights to see message peaks, then suggest a rota. We describe this work on our social media management service page.

To see how your engagement really looks, try our Instagram engagement rate calculator.

Plan your content calendar and your message rota together. On launch or ad days, messages rise. Write on the calendar that sleep mode stays off on those days.

How do you test Sleep Mode before relying on it?

Before you switch it on in a live account, run a small test. Use a second account of your own or a colleague's account. Ask them to send you a message. Then you see how the automatic reply looks.

Do not send test messages to real customers. Instead, use your own team accounts only.

  1. Pick an internal test account.
  2. Set sleep mode for a short window.
  3. Send a message and watch the notification.
  4. Check the reply on the sender screen.
  5. Turn it off and read the summary.

Write each step in a short note. Then a colleague can repeat the setup quickly. Also repeat the test after major app updates, because menus can move.

In addition, take a screenshot of the automatic reply. Then your team can see what senders see. Keep these images for internal use only.

What team rule should you write for Sleep Mode?

Who can switch it on, who can switch it off, and for which hours? If you do not write this down, the setting gets forgotten. One person turns it on for the night and nobody turns it off in the morning. Then customer messages wait for hours.

QuestionExample rule
Who switches it on?The account manager
Who switches it off?The morning on-call person
Which hours?Overnight, outside work hours
Campaign days?Kept off
Who checks the inbox? The first person online

This table is only an example, so adapt it to your own team. Keep the rule on one page and pin it in your team channel. Review it every quarter, because roles change.

How do you handle after-hours DMs besides Sleep Mode?

Sleep mode is only one piece. For after-hours messages, build a small flow. First, sort messages by type: question, order, complaint and partnership offer. Then decide who does what each morning.

  • Complaints and order problems come first.
  • Product and price questions come second.
  • Partnership and general messages come last.

Complaints and orders carry priority, because waiting hurts trust. Questions can get quick answers from saved replies. Partnership offers can usually wait.

To measure traffic from your links, tag them. Our UTM builder makes this easy.

Watch the flow for a month. Then note the busiest hours, then shorten or extend your window.

How do Sleep Mode and a social media crisis interact?

After a product error or a misread post, message traffic jumps. If sleep mode is on at that moment, an angry customer sees only an automatic reply. That makes the problem bigger.

So at the first sign of a crisis, switch it off. Then assign someone to the inbox and prepare reply templates. Afterwards, review the setting and the inbox together.

  • Switch sleep mode off at the first sign.
  • Assign an on-call person.
  • Prepare reply templates.
  • Review the setting after the event.

In short, sleep mode suits calm periods. In busy periods, a team rota should take over.

Who should use Sleep Mode and who should not?

Students, creators and freelancers who want focus benefit most. Users who dislike night alerts benefit too. For teens, Instagram turns it on by default.

A shop or service account with constant customer messages is a poor fit. The automatic reply does not close a sale. Brands that buy ad traffic need an open inbox in that window.

Account typeFitNote
PersonalGoodFor nights and study hours
CreatorGoodCareful on big posting days
Shop or serviceLimitedOutside work hours only
AdvertiserUsually poorSwitch off on campaign days

Ask yourself whether a message at that hour is worth waiting for. If yes, use it. If not, run a team rota or keep the inbox open.

In short, it is a focus tool and not a customer service tool. Therefore, keep that difference in mind, because it prevents most mistakes.

What if Instagram changes its menus again?

Instagram and Meta update the interface often, so steps drift over time. Compare this guide with the official Help Center. Even if a line is renamed, the Time management heading usually keeps the same logic.

  • Search the Help Center for "sleep mode" or "quiet mode".
  • Switch the app language to English and compare labels.
  • Take a screenshot and share it with your team.

Assign one person on your team to watch these changes. Meta announcements often show new names early. Then you can update your guides before they go stale.

Also, repeat your check after each big app update. For example, a new menu layout can hide the toggle for a while. Then a quick look saves you a long search.

Which official sources and checks should you use?

Before you change a setting on a business account, run a short check. The list below holds the official pages we used. We base this guide on the Instagram Help Center and Meta's announcement.

Our check questions are these. Who answers messages in the morning? Does the window overlap campaign hours? Is there a fallback channel for urgent cases?

Finally, measure the result. At month end, look at response times and missed messages. If they got worse, loosen the window. If they improved, keep it. This guide is not legal or technical advice. It summarizes official sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Instagram quiet mode the same as sleep mode?
Yes. According to Meta, sleep mode is the current name of the feature announced in 2023 as quiet mode. It works the same way: it mutes notifications, changes your activity status and sends an automatic reply to DMs. Menu labels can differ by language and version, so look for the meaning.
Where do you turn on Instagram sleep mode?
Go to your profile, tap the three-line menu and open Settings and activity. Then open Time management, tap Sleep mode and switch the toggle on. The Help Center describes this route. Menu names can change by version, so look for the closest matching line on your screen.
What does a sender see when you use sleep mode?
Meta says the sender gets an automatic reply and your activity status changes. So they learn that you are not getting notifications at that time. The Help Center does not make clear whether you can edit the reply text. Use the option if your app shows it.
Should a business account keep sleep mode on?
Usually not. The automatic reply is no real answer, and your response time grows. You can schedule it for overnight hours when nobody watches the inbox. On campaign days and during ad-driven message peaks, keep it off. This is our assessment, not an official rule.
Is sleep mode on by default for teens?
According to the Instagram Help Center, Teen Accounts have sleep mode on from 10PM to 7AM every day. Notifications are muted, automatic replies are on and the teen sees a reminder to close the app. For detailed settings, read Meta's Teen Account pages.
