How Does ChatGPT Search Find Your Site? OAI-SearchBot Visibility Guide

Short answer
How does ChatGPT search find your site?
ChatGPT search is the feature that answers a user's question with current web sources and shows those sources as clickable links. For your site to appear, OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, must reach your pages, read your content, and find a clear answer to the question.
In this guide, Talha Aslan and team share the checklist we use in client work. First, we explain how the bots differ. Then we move on to robots.txt, the Bing side, the IndexNow protocol, and measurement. If you want the wider picture of AI crawlers, our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt covers that topic separately. Here we focus only on ChatGPT search.
Where does ChatGPT search get its web results?
When ChatGPT search answers a question, it consults current web pages and lists the sources it used inside or next to the answer. So your place in that list depends first on whether OpenAI can discover and read your page.
OpenAI's official bots page names OAI-SearchBot as the crawler behind the search feature. Its purpose is to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. However, the same page also notes that sites which opt out will not appear as sources in search answers. They may still show up as plain navigational links.
In short, visibility in ChatGPT search has three layers:
- Access: Can OAI-SearchBot open your page?
- Readability: Is the content available as server rendered HTML?
- Selection: Does your page answer the question more clearly than other sources?
The first two layers are technical, and you control them. The third layer depends on content quality, trust, and topical depth. That is why no team can promise selection.
What is the difference between OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, and GPTBot?
OpenAI runs more than one bot, and each one has a different job. If you edit robots.txt without knowing this, you may block training and quietly switch off your ChatGPT search visibility at the same time.
| Bot | Official purpose | Effect of robots.txt | Link to ChatGPT search |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing websites in ChatGPT search features | Follows the rules; if you block it, you lose source status in answers | Directly decisive |
| GPTBot | Crawling content that may help train foundation models | Blocking it signals that content should not go into training | Separate from search visibility |
| ChatGPT-User | User initiated actions, such as visiting a page on request | Rules may not apply, because a user triggers the visit | Not used to decide search eligibility |
OpenAI's official bots documentation states clearly that these settings are independent. For example, you can allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot. Also, if you allow both, OpenAI may use the results of one crawl for both purposes.
How do you allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt?
Robots.txt is a plain text file in your site root. It tells crawlers which paths they may open. Your first task for ChatGPT search visibility is to confirm that this file has no rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot.
- Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and confirm that the file is live.
- Search for a "User-agent: OAI-SearchBot" line. If it exists, read the Disallow rules under it.
- If that line is missing, check the "User-agent: *" group. A general group that closes the whole site also covers OAI-SearchBot.
- If you want to block training, open a separate group for GPTBot and leave the OAI-SearchBot group alone.
- After you publish the change, reload the file and confirm that no cache serves the old version.
OpenAI says that search related robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect. So do not expect results right after an edit. Instead of writing rules by hand, you can build bot specific groups quickly with our robots.txt generator.
Why might ChatGPT search miss your site even when robots.txt allows it?
Robots.txt is only the first gate. We often see the same pattern in audits. The file is clean, but the server or a security layer still stops the bot. So the second check is whether requests actually reach the page.
- Firewall and bot protection: Some hosting panels and CDN settings block unknown bots by default.
- Rate limits: A burst of requests can make the server return 429 or 503.
- Geo blocking: Sites open to only a few countries may cut off crawlers from abroad.
- Login walls: If content sits behind a login, the bot sees only the login page.
OpenAI publishes the IP ranges of OAI-SearchBot in an official JSON file and recommends allowing them. Therefore, it is safer to base your security rules on that list than on the user agent name alone. That way you also filter out fake bots that pretend to be OAI-SearchBot.
How do you confirm OAI-SearchBot visits in your server logs?
Server access logs give you the strongest evidence. Download the raw access logs from your hosting panel and search the user agent field for OAI-SearchBot. Then you can see which pages the bot requested and which status codes it got.
We suggest you check three things:
- Status code: A 200 is a good sign. However, a 403, 429, or 5xx means some layer stops the bot.
- IP address: Compare the source address with the ranges OpenAI publishes. If it does not match, the visit may be fake.
- Requested paths: Does the bot fetch only the homepage, or does it reach inner pages too?
According to OpenAI, some bots add an extra marker to the user agent when they fetch robots.txt. That makes it easier to filter robots.txt requests separately. If the logs show no visits at all, the bot may not have discovered your site yet. In that case, you need stronger discovery signals.
Why might the Bing index matter for ChatGPT search?
This topic calls for care. OpenAI's bots page does not list in detail which search indexes or partners ChatGPT search draws on. So we present the Bing connection as a field observation, not as a firm rule.
Our observation is this: pages that sit well in the Bing index tend to appear more often as sources in ChatGPT search answers. On the other hand, this is not proof of cause and effect. Sites that crawl well tend to do well everywhere, and that alone could produce the same picture.
Still, strengthening the Bing side costs you nothing. Moreover, Bing also feeds other AI experiences such as Microsoft Copilot. If your site does not show up on Bing at all, our guide on fixing a site that is not showing on Bing walks through the diagnosis step by step. In short, ignoring Bing leaves an avoidable blind spot.
How does Bing Webmaster Tools help your ChatGPT search visibility?
Bing Webmaster Tools is a free panel that shows how Bing crawls and indexes your site. It is not a ChatGPT search panel. However, it lets you see discovery and index health.
- Add your site and verify ownership. If an import from Google Search Console is available, it saves time.
- Submit your XML sitemap and watch whether Bing reads it.
- Review crawl errors and blocked pages on a regular schedule.
- Use URL inspection to check key pages one by one.
- Once a month, review the search performance report and note which pages earn impressions.
Menu names can change over time, so focus on functions rather than button labels. For example, a law firm moves its site to a new domain. After the move, it resubmits the sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools and checks that redirects work. That way it keeps the discovery gap short on both Bing and OpenAI. It also keeps an eye on the old domain in the panel for a while.
How do you announce new pages faster with IndexNow?
IndexNow is an open protocol that lets you notify participating search engines right away when you publish, update, or delete a page. In other words, you tell the crawler about the change instead of waiting for it to notice.
You can read how the protocol works on the official IndexNow site. In short, you place a key file in your site root and then submit changed URLs together with that key. Many content management systems handle this through a plugin.
For example, on a site that adds new products or posts every day, IndexNow can help reduce discovery delay. However, IndexNow does not guarantee indexing; it is only a notification. We have also not seen an official OpenAI statement that these pings reach ChatGPT search directly. So we treat IndexNow as a tool that speeds up the Bing side.
When you set it up, keep two points in mind. First, send only URLs that really changed; sending the whole site every day adds nothing. Second, check now and then that the key file is still reachable in the root. A theme or server change can remove it, and the pings then fail without warning.
Which content does ChatGPT search tend to cite?
OpenAI does not publish detailed selection criteria. So the points below are not firm rules. They are trends we observe in the field, and they match general search quality principles.
- Direct answers: Pages that answer the question in two or three sentences right under the heading are easier to quote.
- Clear structure: Question style subheadings, numbered steps, and tables make each part usable on its own.
- Freshness and accuracy: Dated facts with a named source look more reliable.
- Entity clarity: When your brand name, address, and service area stay consistent, the model matches you correctly.
We cover the wider framework in our guide to generative engine optimization (GEO). In short, writing for AI answers is not a separate job from writing pages that truly help the reader.
Can bots actually read your page content?
Many modern sites build content in the browser with JavaScript. Human visitors see no problem. However, not every crawler runs JavaScript. So if your main text is missing from the first HTML response, the bot may see an empty shell.
You can run a simple test. Right click the page in your browser and view the page source. If the main heading, paragraphs, and key facts such as prices appear as plain text, you are in good shape. If you see only an empty container, talk to your developer about server side rendering or prerendering.
Also check these signals:
- Did a noindex tag stay on the page by mistake?
- Does the canonical tag point to another URL?
- Is important text hidden inside tabs or accordions?
These checks help on Google and on OpenAI's side alike.
How do you run a step by step ChatGPT search visibility checklist?
We suggest you run the list below once from start to finish and then repeat it every three months. Note the date and result next to each item. That makes later changes much easier to track.
- Confirm that robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot.
- Make a deliberate choice about GPTBot, and keep training and search settings apart.
- Allow OpenAI's published IP ranges in firewall and CDN rules.
- Check OAI-SearchBot requests and status codes in server logs.
- Confirm that the main content appears as plain HTML in the page source.
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap.
- Add IndexNow pings to your publishing flow.
- Rewrite the first paragraph of key pages as a direct answer.
- Track sessions from ChatGPT in a separate analytics segment.
- Ask ChatGPT your target questions and record the source list.
Your own team can handle every step on this list. However, if you want technical and content work handled together, we run this work for your brand as part of our AI SEO and GEO services.
How do you measure traffic from ChatGPT in Google Analytics?
Users who click links in chat answers reach your site as referral traffic. In our field observation, those links often carry a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter. The official documentation does not describe this behavior in detail, so keep in mind that it may change.
For measurement, you can follow this path:
- In Google Analytics 4, filter the session source dimension for chatgpt.com.
- Check the referrer dimension too, because some visits may arrive without the parameter.
- Build a custom channel group or segment that combines both conditions.
- Use the landing page report to list the pages that get visits from ChatGPT.
We explain the full setup in our guide to detecting AI traffic in GA4. Also, to keep your own campaign links clean, you can use our UTM builder.
How do you test ChatGPT search visibility by hand?
Analytics data arrives late and shows only clicks. That is why we suggest you add regular manual tests. The goal is to see which sources appear for your target questions and to track changes over time.
The method is simple. First, pick ten to twenty questions your customers really ask. Next, ask those questions in ChatGPT with search turned on and save the source list. Then repeat the same questions once a month.
Example scenario: a dental clinic in a city district tracks the question "what affects the price of teeth whitening near me". In the first test, only directory sites appear as sources. The clinic adds a direct answer paragraph and a process table to its page, then repeats the tests. As a result, it tracks which change worked through records rather than guesses.
Answers can be personalized, so do not draw firm conclusions from a single test. For a quick first check, you can also use our AI visibility checker.
Does blocking GPTBot reduce ChatGPT search visibility?
According to OpenAI's official statement, no. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot settings are independent. Blocking GPTBot signals that your content should not go into foundation model training. ChatGPT search visibility depends on the OAI-SearchBot setting.
However, we often see one mistake in the field. A site owner wants to "block AI" and closes every OpenAI bot in one go. As a result, they block training and lose search visibility at the same time. So make the decision bot by bot.
For example, a publisher may not want to contribute to training, yet it also does not want to lose visitors from search. In that case, Disallow for GPTBot and Allow for OAI-SearchBot is a sensible balance. On the other hand, an online store may choose to allow both bots. The right answer depends on your business model.
Which mistakes silently switch off ChatGPT search visibility?
Some mistakes cut visibility without any warning. The list below sums up the cases we meet most often in audits.
- A "User-agent: * Disallow: /" rule from staging that ships to production.
- A bot protection option that blocks all unknown bots and stays on.
- Key pages that show content only through JavaScript.
- Wrong canonicals on a multilingual site, so language versions suppress each other.
- Old URLs that return 404 after a migration instead of redirecting.
If you want to review the classic robots.txt errors, our guide to common robots.txt mistakes is a good next read. In practice, the safest habit is to repeat the technical audit after every major site change, not once a year.
How do you help ChatGPT recognize your brand correctly?
Once technical access is in place, the next topic is whether the model understands your brand. If your brand name appears in different forms, or your service area is vague, the model may struggle to match you with the right questions.
These steps strengthen that match:
- On your About page, state who you are, where you work, and what you do in plain sentences.
- Keep name, logo, and social profile links consistent in your Organization schema.
- Use the same name and address format across business profiles and directory listings.
We cover this topic in more depth in our post on how your brand shows up in ChatGPT and Gemini. So here we only sum up the part that overlaps with this guide.
How do sitemaps and internal links affect discovery?
A crawler knows your site only as far as it knows your URLs. Therefore, discovery signals matter as much as technical access. An XML sitemap and strong internal links help the bot reach key pages quickly.
- List only URLs that you want indexed, that return 200, and that are canonical.
- Give every key page in-text links from several related pages.
- Add the sitemap URL at the end of robots.txt.
- Find orphan pages that get no links from anywhere, on a regular basis.
On the other hand, a sitemap alone does not win selection. It only shortens the bot's path. For example, in a store with hundreds of product pages, weak links from category pages slow the bot down. So a simpler site structure also brings an indirect gain on OpenAI's side.
Do you need structured data for ChatGPT search?
OpenAI does not list schema markup as a requirement for this feature. So we do not see it as a magic key. However, used correctly, it is a helpful layer that makes the meaning of your content clearer.
For example, on a local business page, consistent address, opening hours, and phone details in both text and markup support entity clarity. Similarly, clear price and stock details on a product page help with comparison questions.
The core rule is simple: markup should repeat the visible text, never contradict it. Putting facts only in markup breaks Google's guidelines and also costs trust. In short, make the text clear first, then add markup that matches it.
How do you rewrite content for AI answers?
You do not need to rewrite pages from scratch. Often, a cleaner structure is enough. The goal is for each section to be clear enough to quote on its own.
- Name the main question the page answers and put it in the first subheading.
- Write a direct answer of 40 to 60 words under that heading.
- Split long paragraphs into short ones that carry one idea each.
- Move comparisons into tables and processes into numbered lists.
- If you give a number, name its source in the sentence.
Example scenario: an accounting firm's "company formation" page opens with a long sales pitch. In the rewrite, the first paragraph briefly lists the steps of the process. Below it sit a step list and a document table. As a result, the page becomes more useful for readers and for AI answers alike.
Why do results differ from one user to another?
When two people ask the same question, they may see different source lists. Location, language, earlier context in the chat, and the wording of the question can all shape the answer. Moreover, web content keeps changing, so even the same person may see different results on different days.
This directly affects how you measure. Looking at one screenshot and saying "we show up" or "we do not" is misleading. Instead, test the same question set at regular intervals, ideally in fresh chats without prior context.
Also add different phrasings of each question to your list. For example, a "best" phrasing and a "how to choose" phrasing may surface different sources. That way you judge your visibility across a topic cluster, not a single query. This view helps you read the swings calmly.
What should multilingual and local sites watch out for?
If your site has several language versions, each one needs its own URL, its own language, and correct hreflang tags. Otherwise, the bot may match an English question to your German page or the other way around. That hands the user a source in the wrong language.
For local businesses, address, service area, and contact details matter a great deal. For example, for a question like "shutter repair in a given district", the model can match pages that name the service area clearly. So we suggest you mention district and neighborhood names in natural sentences on your area pages.
- Write titles, descriptions, and body text natively in each language; do not publish unchecked machine translation.
- Link language versions to each other with reciprocal hreflang tags.
- Keep the address and phone format identical across all platforms.
In short, a clean multilingual setup turns each market into a separate opportunity in its own question set. It also supports your international visibility on Google.
When should you bring in professional help?
You can apply the checklist on your own. However, outside help saves time in some cases. For example, an expert eye helps if you have no access to server logs, if the security layer is complex, or if your content team struggles with the direct answer format.
In this work, we first audit technical access. Next, we move priority pages to an answer focused structure and set up the measurement layer. We do not promise results or rankings, because the platform makes the selection. Even so, closing gaps in access and readability is a concrete step that improves your odds.
