AI Visibility Tracking Tools Compared: Which One Fits Your Needs?

Talha Aslan 22 min read 3 views

Short answer

What do AI visibility tracking tools do, and which one should you choose?

AI visibility tracking tools are platforms that run your chosen prompts through ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and similar assistants on a schedule, then report whether your brand appears, which sources the answers cite and where competitors stand. No single tool wins everywhere, so the comparison below matches each one to a need.

At Talha Aslan and team, we set up AI automation and GEO (generative engine optimization) work for clients. That means we have to evaluate this tool category again on almost every new project. This article is a tool comparison, not a measurement guide. If you want the measurement logic first, read our guide on how to measure AI visibility and then come back here.

We compare five tools: the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, Peec AI and Otterly.AI. For each one, we describe a strength and a limit side by side. We do not crown a winner, because the right choice depends on your budget, the SEO suite your team already uses and the markets you sell in.

How did we build this comparison?

We took every data point from the vendor's own website, pricing page or help documentation. We also did not rely on third party reviews, forum threads or sales decks. Where an official page did not clearly confirm a feature, the table says "check." In other words, we show the gap instead of guessing.

We also left out prices, user counts and market share. These numbers change fast, and plan contents can differ by region and over time. Always check the current figures on the provider's official page. These are the criteria we used:

  • Which AI platforms the tool monitors (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot).
  • Whether you can add and track your own prompts.
  • Whether it reports brand mentions and citations separately.
  • Competitor benchmarking and share of voice.
  • Country and language selection, including non English markets.
  • Whether it includes sentiment analysis.
  • Data export, API access and dashboard connectors.
  • How well it fits with the SEO suite you already use.

Finally, we noted whether each tool offers a trial or a free plan. That detail also changes, so the table stays at the level of "trial available" or "paid plans."

Which criteria matter most when comparing AI visibility tracking tools?

First, look at platform coverage. If your audience mostly searches on Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode data is essential. On the other hand, a B2B or tech audience may lean more on ChatGPT and Perplexity. So you need to confirm on the official page which platforms a tool actually monitors.

Prompt tracking comes second. A prebuilt prompt library gives you a quick start. However, to track the exact question your customer asks, you need to add your own prompts. The third criterion is the split between mentions and citations. Your brand name can appear without a link to your site, and the reverse can also happen.

Language and country selection is the fourth. For a brand selling in Germany or Turkey, results from English prompts can mislead. The fifth is reporting: can you export the data and move it into your own dashboard? In short, the weight of each criterion depends on your business. The table below puts them side by side.

What does the feature table show for the five tools?

Specifically, each cell in the table reflects wording we saw on the vendor's official page. A "check" cell does not mean the feature is missing. It only means we could not confirm it on the official page. Also keep plan tiers in mind, since a feature may sit only in a higher plan.

Who is the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit a good fit for?

Semrush sells AI visibility as a separate toolkit. According to Semrush's official help page, the Brand Performance report tracks answers across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Visibility Overview, meanwhile, gives a quick high level read of a brand's AI presence.

Its main strength, then, is integration. If your team already runs keyword research and site audits in Semrush, seeing AI data in the same interface saves time. The toolkit also includes competitor research that shows where rivals appear and you do not, plus sentiment analysis and CSV export. Country coverage is broad, too.

As for limits, platform coverage differs between reports, so you may not see the same platform set everywhere. The official page also ties the visibility score mainly to brand mentions. We suggest checking during evaluation how deeply it reports citations as a separate metric. The toolkit sits on top of a paid subscription, so confirm current plan and trial terms on the official page.

In short, Semrush makes sense for teams that already use it and want SEO and AI visibility in one place.

What does Ahrefs Brand Radar do differently?

Ahrefs Brand Radar lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and AI Mode on its official page, and Claude appears as an option as well. Its clearest difference is a strict split between two metrics. Mentions show how often your brand name appears in the answer text. Citations show how often the AI links to your pages or domain as a source.

Brand Radar also offers two ways to track. First, you can add custom prompts that mirror what buyers ask. Second, you can track keywords that trigger an AI answer in Google Search. There is also an AI Visibility Index built on prompts Ahrefs collects in advance, so it needs no setup. On top of that, it shows AI share of voice against competitors.

The limit: the product page does not list sentiment analysis as a Brand Radar feature. We also could not clearly confirm country and language selection on the product page. So if you plan to track German or other non English prompts, check this during your trial. Custom prompts also depend on a paid Ahrefs plan.

Therefore Brand Radar suits SEO teams that already use Ahrefs and want a clean split between mentions and citations.

Which teams is Profound built for?

Profound is a standalone platform focused on AI search. Its official site names ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek and Google AI Overviews. On the enterprise plan, the list of answer engines grows and includes platforms such as AI Mode.

Its strength, in practice, is depth. Citation Analytics, sentiment and industry benchmarking sit side by side. In addition, a module called Agent Analytics shows how AI bots crawl your site and which pages they refer visitors to. That lets content and technical SEO teams look at the same data. A feature called Prompt Volumes aims to show what people actually ask AI assistants.

Now the limits. On the trial plan, the prompt set comes from recommendations and you cannot edit it; platform coverage also narrows. According to the official pricing page, exports and API access belong to the enterprise plan. So for a small team, Profound may feel heavy as a first step.

In short, Profound makes more sense for multi market brands and enterprise teams that want to pipe AI visibility data into their own systems.

What are the strengths and limits of Peec AI?

Peec AI names ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on its official site, and it has a dedicated page for AI Mode tracking. You can add your own prompts and organize them with tags. The tool also suggests prompts along with search volume data, which helps you prioritize.

Its strength is also clear: flexible reporting. Visibility, position and sentiment serve as headline metrics. A separate view shows which sites the answers cite as sources. Moreover, the official site lists CSV exports, an API, a dashboard connector and MCP support. That makes it easier to move the data into your own reports. It also supports country selection, and the pricing page mentions regions and languages.

The limit sits on the transparency side. The pricing page does not map each model to each plan. So before you buy, confirm the exact platform list and the languages you need through official channels. And since it is a standalone platform, you will manage a second dashboard next to your SEO suite.

Peec AI is a balanced option for agencies and marketing teams that want reporting in one place.

When does Otterly.AI make sense?

Otterly.AI lists ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot as core platforms on its pricing page. Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini come as add-ons. According to the same page, every plan includes unlimited countries and languages.

Its strength is a tiered setup that suits smaller teams. You define your own search prompts and can tag them as branded or non branded. Reports cover both brand mentions and the links that answers reference. The tool also includes a GEO content audit with recommendations on how readable your pages are for AI systems. Sentiment analysis appears on the pricing page as well.

As for limits, the API and dashboard connector do not come with the entry plan; they arrive with higher tiers. We also saw two different statements about competitor tracking on the official pricing page. If the number of competitors matters to you, ask the provider before you buy. Because Gemini and AI Mode are add-ons, they also affect total cost.

Otterly.AI is a reasonable entry point for small and mid sized businesses that want to test AI visibility with low risk.

Why should you track mentions and citations separately?

A mention means your brand name appears in the answer text. A citation means the AI links to your page to support its answer. As a result, these two lead to different outcomes. Mentions shape brand awareness, while citations carry the chance of traffic to your site.

For example, a buyer may ask, "Which accounting software is reliable for a small firm?" Your brand may show up by name in the list. However, the sources under the answer may point to a competitor's comparison page. In that case you have visibility, but someone else gets the click. In the reverse case, your guide earns a citation while the answer never names your brand.

That is why a tool that reports both metrics separately gives your content team clearer work. If mentions are low, look at brand signals, meaning how third party sites talk about you. If citations are low, review your content structure and technical access. We cover why AI assistants favor certain brands in our article on which brands AI search engines recommend.

In practice, reading both metrics together works best. High mentions with low citations means people know your brand, but AI does not reference your content. The opposite means your content has value, but your name does not stick. Each pattern calls for a different plan.

How should you set up tracking for non English markets?

AI answers shift a lot by language and location. So a brand that sells in Germany, Turkey or another non English market gets a distorted picture from English prompts. The same applies to brands entering several European markets at once.

We recommend these setup steps:

  1. Confirm country and language selection on the official page or in a trial account.
  2. Write prompts in the language your customers really use; translated prompts produce different answers.
  3. Create a separate project or tag group for each market.
  4. Tag branded and non branded prompts separately.
  5. Save the first few weeks as a baseline and read changes against it.

Also watch for phrasing variety. "Best dental clinic near me" and "Can you recommend a good dentist" share an intent, yet they may return different answers. Therefore tracking a few variations per intent gives a healthier signal than one fixed phrase. In German, the gap between formal and casual wording deserves its own variations, too.

Which AI search visibility tool fits which need?

Note that the table below is a matching guide, not a ranking; it also leaves room for overlap. Several tools can fit the same need. We suggest you make the final call based on your own trial data.

What are the limits of AI visibility tracking tools?

The biggest limit is this: the answer a tool records may differ from the answer your customer sees. AI responses shift with the user's history, location, session context and the model's current state. Even the same prompt asked twice can return a different list.

Because of that, these tools work on a sampling logic. They ask set prompts at set intervals under set conditions and store the results. In other words, the data you get is a trend signal, not an exact ranking. So instead of reacting to a one day drop, look at weekly and monthly trends.

  • You choose the prompt set, and the wrong prompts produce the wrong picture.
  • Platforms change their interfaces and answer formats often, which can affect tool data.
  • Sentiment analysis is an automated classification and can miss irony or context.
  • Higher visibility alone does not mean higher sales; read it with traffic and conversions.

Put simply, AI visibility tracking tools work like a compass, not a map. They show direction, but not every turn in the road.

How can you track AI visibility manually without a paid tool?

If your budget does not cover a tool yet, start with manual tracking. The scale stays small, of course, but it also gives you a first picture of where you do not appear. As an example scenario, picture a small service business.

  1. List ten to twenty questions your customers actually ask.
  2. Run each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and in Google searches that show AI Overviews.
  3. If possible, test logged out or in a private window to reduce personal history effects.
  4. Note whether your brand appears, which sources show up and which competitors appear.
  5. Repeat the same prompts at regular intervals and log the changes with dates.

For a quick look at how AI systems read your own site, try our free AI visibility checker. We cover the improvement side in our article on how your brand shows up in ChatGPT and Gemini. Manual tracking takes effort, so once your prompt list grows, moving to a tool makes sense.

How do GA4 and Search Console complete the picture?

Tracking tools, put simply, show what happens inside AI answers. GA4 and Search Console show how much traffic that visibility sends to your site. Without both views, the picture stays incomplete.

In GA4, you can group referral traffic from sources like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini into its own channel. We walk through that setup in our guide to detecting AI traffic in GA4. That way you can check whether a rise in your visibility tool actually turns into visits.

On the Search Console side, Google's own wording matters. According to Google Search Central's page on AI features, sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode count toward overall search traffic in the Performance report, under the "Web" search type. The same page also states that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in these features. So you will see Google clicks in Search Console, but you should not expect a separate AI column.

Reading these three sources together gives your team a clear story. The tracking tool shows direction, GA4 shows visits and conversions, and Search Console shows impressions and clicks on Google. If one rises while another stays flat, you find the problem faster.

Which mistakes should you avoid when choosing a tool?

The most common mistake we see in the field is choosing the tool before the prompt set. A tool bought without a clear list of questions often reports the wrong data on a reliable schedule. So map intent first.

  • Tracking only branded prompts: someone who already knows you does not represent the discovery stage.
  • Assuming platform coverage: a feature you think includes AI Overviews may be an add-on.
  • Reacting to a single daily score: answers fluctuate, so watch the trend.
  • Skipping language settings: English prompts mislead in a German market.
  • Not tying data to action: a report that triggers no content or technical work is just a cost.
  • Picking competitors at random: add the brands you actually lose customers to.

Also, do not neglect the technical side. If AI crawlers cannot reach your site, no tracking tool will fix that. We explain crawler access in our article on AI crawlers and robots.txt settings. You can also try our llms.txt generator to give AI systems a summary of your site.

Example scenario: where does a mid sized ecommerce brand start?

This is an example scenario, not a real client case. Picture a mid sized home textiles retailer that ships to the UK and Germany. The team already uses an SEO suite and suspects that competitors appear more often in AI answers.

First, the team lists customer questions in both languages: product choice, care, shipping and returns. Then it tests the AI module of its current SEO suite, since the data already lives in that dashboard. However, if coverage or language options fall short for German prompts, it adds a standalone tool with flexible country settings on a trial plan.

After a few weeks, the picture gets clearer. The product pages earn citations, but the brand name rarely appears in comparison prompts. So the team focuses on comparison guides on the content side and on third party coverage on the brand side. The AI channel in GA4 then shows whether this work turns into visits. In short, the tool does not make the decision; it shows the team the right question.

When is an off the shelf tool not enough?

For the most part, ready made tools cover standard needs well. Still, they fall short in some cases. For example, you may want to merge AI visibility data with your CRM, sales data or internal reporting stack. Or you may need to track many brands, resellers or locations at once.

Data privacy is also a common case. If your prompt set reveals sensitive topics such as product roadmaps or customer details, it matters where that data gets processed. GDPR in Europe and similar rules elsewhere call for a review of the vendor's data processing agreement and hosting location. This is not legal advice; review it with your own legal counsel.

In such cases, a custom monitoring setup that works with your own data can make more sense. Through our AI SEO and GEO services, our team plans the measurement layer together with the content and technical work that lifts visibility. That said, for most businesses the first step is a baseline from a ready made tool.

If you are weighing a custom setup, first write down where the ready made tool falls short. Is it a missing platform, a language or data merging? That clarity affects both cost and setup time. Otherwise a custom build can turn into a more expensive copy of what the tool already does.

How should you plan the trial and the budget?

Because trials are often short, you need to use them well. So have your prompt set, competitor list and target markets ready before you start. Otherwise half the trial goes to setup.

During the trial, running the same prompt set in two shortlisted tools is the fairest comparison. For example, track the same twenty prompts in both and see which tool gives clearer, more actionable reports for your market. That said, do not try to convert one tool's score into another's; each tool calculates in its own way.

On budget, comparing headline prices alone misleads. Some tools sell platforms as add-ons; others tier by prompt count or by seats. Therefore ask, "What is the total cost for the platforms and prompt volume I need?" Always check current pricing on the official plan page.

Finally, tie the tool to your reporting rhythm. A monthly visibility report, shared together with the GA4 AI channel and Search Console data, means something to leadership. If you need to explain GEO to your team, our guide to generative engine optimization is a good starting point.

How should you read the data once tracking is live?

For the first few weeks after setup, only observe. The goal in this period is to see a baseline, not to fix anything. Note the prompts where you never appear, the ones where you appear next to competitors and the sources that keep coming back.

Then sort your prompts into three groups. The first group holds important prompts where you never appear. The second holds prompts where AI mentions you but does not cite you. Finally, the third group holds prompts where you earn both, which you need to protect. As a result, each group gets its own task list.

  • Where you never appear, you may lack content that answers that question directly.
  • Where AI mentions you without a citation, review page structure, clear answer blocks and technical access.
  • For prompts where you are strong, keep the content current and watch competitor moves.

Lastly, list the source sites that come up again and again. These are the publications AI trusts in your sector. So prioritizing brand awareness work around them pays off more than random promotion.

Who on your team should own this data?

Specifically, AI visibility is not one team's job. The content team owns prompts and answer blocks, technical SEO owns crawler access and site structure, and brand or PR owns third party coverage. But if the report has no single owner, the data never turns into work.

That is why we suggest the SEO lead owns the report in smaller companies. In larger organizations, a monthly meeting where all three teams look at the same table works well. The meeting output should also be concrete: which content to write for which prompt, which technical issue to fix and which publication to approach. Then the tool moves from a reporting habit to a decision tool.

Also keep the summary for leadership simple. Share of voice, the citation trend and the GA4 AI channel together make a three line summary. Anyone who needs more detail can dig into the tool itself.

About this comparison

This comparison is independent. We receive no fees, commissions or affiliate income from any provider on this list, and the links in this article are not affiliate links. We compiled the information from official vendor pages, and it may change over time.

If you are a provider and think something needs an update, you can write to us through our contact page. We check every correction against the official source and then update the article.

Readers can use the same channel if they spot outdated information. Because this market moves fast, we recheck this article against official pages on a regular basis, and the "check" cells in the table get revisited during those reviews.

Bottom line: where should you start with AI visibility tracking tools?

First, define your prompt set and your markets. Then test the AI module of your current SEO suite; if it falls short, add a standalone tool. Ahrefs Brand Radar stands out for separating mentions and citations, Semrush for integration, Profound for enterprise depth, Peec AI for flexible reporting and Otterly.AI for a low risk start.

Still, no tool is enough on its own. Read tool data with GA4 and Search Console, watch the trend and tie every report to an action. That way, AI visibility tracking tools stop being a cost line and become a signal that feeds your content and brand decisions.

So what should you do in week one? Write down your customers' questions, run a few manual checks and set up the AI channel in GA4. Those three steps also reveal which tool you actually need. As a result, you pick the tool to fit the need, not the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are AI visibility tracking tools free?
Most of the tools we reviewed run on paid plans, and some offer a trial. Ahrefs includes custom prompt tracking in its paid plans and also offers a free AI visibility checker. If you have no budget, start with manual tracking and add GA4 and Search Console data. Always check current plan and trial terms on the provider's official page.
Do these tools show the same answers my customers see?
Not always. AI answers shift with the user's location, history, session context and the model's current state. Tools sample by asking set prompts under set conditions. So treat the data as a trend signal rather than an exact ranking, and do not make decisions based on a single day's change.
What is the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention means your brand name appears in the text of an AI answer. A citation means the answer links to your page as a source. Mentions influence brand awareness, while citations influence the chance of traffic. Some tools separate the two metrics clearly, others focus mainly on mentions, so check this split on the official page before you buy.
Which tool should I choose for German or other non English prompts?
There is no single right tool. First confirm country and language selection on the official page or in a trial account. Semrush, Peec AI and Otterly.AI mention country selection on their official pages. Then write prompts in the language your customers use and collect a baseline for a few weeks. Make the decision based on that trial data.
Does Search Console report AI traffic separately?
According to Google's official documentation, traffic from sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode counts toward overall search traffic in the Performance report, under the Web search type. So you will see those clicks in Search Console, but not in a separate AI column. You can track visits from ChatGPT or Perplexity in GA4 with a dedicated channel group.
When do I need a custom monitoring setup instead of a ready made tool?
A custom setup can make sense when you want to merge visibility data with your CRM, sales or internal reporting, or when you track many brands and markets. If your prompt set contains sensitive information, GDPR and similar rules also matter. This is not legal advice; review data processing terms with your legal counsel.
