WebP to JPG in 4 steps

  1. Add your WebP files

Drag files onto the panel, pick several with "Choose images", or paste a copied image with Ctrl/Cmd+V. You can add up to 100 files at once.

  2. Check the detected format and target

The tool reads the file content, not the extension, and shows the result under "Detected format". On this page the "Target format" is already set to JPG; you can switch to PNG or WebP any time.

  3. Set quality and the transparent colour

The quality slider starts at 92%. For a transparent WebP, choose White, Black or a Custom colour under "Colour for transparent areas". The list converts again by itself whenever you change a setting.

  4. Compare and download

Each row shows a small preview, a "WEBP → JPG" label, the size before and after, and the change in percent. Use "Download" for a single file or "Download all as ZIP" for a batch.

WebP to JPG examples: what happens to which file?

The table below gives no file size numbers, because the result depends on the picture and on your quality setting. It shows the expected direction instead. You read the exact value from the before and after sizes in each row.

Your WebPWhat the JPG output doesFile size directionWhen to prefer it
Lossy WebP photo. The look stays largely intact, but the tool saves it with lossy compression a second time.Usually grows.Forms, email attachments, print and older apps.
Lossless WebP photo or screenshot. It becomes a lossy JPG, and text edges may show slight blotches.Usually shrinks.Uploads with a size limit. For images with text, PNG is safer.
WebP logo with a transparent background. The transparent area takes your chosen colour (White, Black or Custom).Depends on the content; check the before and after sizes in the row.Uses with a known background. If you need transparency, choose PNG.
Animated WebP.Only the first frame becomes a still JPG, and the tool warns you.Usually smaller, since many frames shrink to one. When you only need a thumbnail of the animation.
A file ending in .jpg whose content is WebP.The tool reads the content, shows WebP under "Detected format" and produces a real JPG.Depends on the quality setting.Downloaded images that raise an error in an upload field.

According to Google's WebP documentation, lossy WebP is 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG, and lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG. So expecting growth when you go from WebP to JPG is reasonable.

Which format should you convert WebP to?

The choice depends on the type of image and on where it goes. The summary below covers the situations we meet most often.

SituationRecommended outputReason
A photo for a form, an email or print.JPGEvery system reads it, and it keeps photo files reasonable.
A logo or an image that needs a transparent background.PNGPNG keeps transparency; JPG fills the area with a colour.
A screenshot or a graphic with text.PNGIt is lossless, so text edges stay sharp.
A page with a known background, such as a white document.JPG with a White fillThe transparent area matches the page colour.
Your own website.Keep WebPIt helps page speed; produce JPG only when the other side asks for it.

You can change the target format in the same panel and compare the result right away.

What does this WebP to JPG converter do?

WebP to JPG conversion turns an image in Google's WebP format into a JPG file that opens almost everywhere. This tool does the whole job in your browser. You drop a file on the panel, the tool recognises its format from the content, and a few seconds later the JPG is ready.

Our team reaches for it in three typical situations:

  • An application portal, catalogue system or marketplace upload field rejects WebP.
  • An older design or office program cannot open WebP.
  • A print shop or a client needs a format that everyone can open without trouble.

You can convert up to 100 files at once and download the results as a ZIP. The pixel size stays the same, so only the format changes. Also, if you want smaller dimensions, our Image resizer covers that job.

Why do some apps and forms refuse WebP files?

Current browsers all open WebP without trouble. However, the problem usually starts outside the browser. Many forms, catalogue systems, email programs and desktop apps date from years ago, so they know JPG and PNG but not WebP. As a result, the same image shows up on a website, yet an upload field rejects it.

A second common cause is images you save from a web page. Many sites serve photos as WebP, so you may think you saved an ordinary picture while you actually hold a WebP file. Some files even end in .jpg although the content is WebP. The tool reads the content instead of the extension, which is why the "Detected format" line tells you the truth. When extension and content disagree, the row also shows a note such as "Extension .jpg but the content is WEBP".

In short, WebP is not a bad format; not every system accepts it yet. If the other side demands JPG, converting is the quickest fix. On your own website, however, keeping WebP usually makes sense. Our guide on how to optimize images for website speed and SEO explains why.

What happens to transparent areas when you convert WebP to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, while WebP can. So when you convert a transparent WebP to JPG, the transparent areas need a colour. With JPG as the target, the tool shows the "Colour for transparent areas" option with three choices:

  • White: the default; it suits white pages, emails and most forms.
  • Black: a good fit for dark layouts and for light coloured logos.
  • Custom colour: lets you match your brand or the exact background of the page where the image will sit.

Choose the colour by looking at where the image will end up. For example, if a logo goes onto a light grey page and you convert it with a white fill, a white box appears around it. Semi-transparent edges and soft shadows also blend with the chosen colour, so check the preview of logos with shadows.

If you must keep transparency, choose PNG instead of JPG. There is a separate page for that case: WebP to PNG converter. Moreover, you can switch the target to PNG in the same panel.

Which quality setting should you use, and will the file grow?

The quality slider appears for JPG output and starts at 92% by default. That value gives a good balance without a visible loss in most photos. When you move the slider, the list converts again by itself, so you never restart the job.

Let us be honest about file size: converting WebP to JPG often makes the file bigger. According to Google's documentation, lossy WebP files are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG files at an equivalent SSIM quality index. Once you convert the image to JPG, that advantage disappears. If your source is lossless WebP, the picture flips. Because you move from lossless to lossy, the JPG is usually smaller. Every row shows the size before and after, together with the change in percent.

We suggest this order:

  1. First, start at 92% and look at the result.
  2. Then, if the size exceeds a limit, lower the quality step by step towards 85%.
  3. Finally, if you see halos or blotches around edges, raise the quality again.

Remember that a lossy WebP converted to JPG gets a second lossy save. Therefore, keep the original WebP file.

What changes with animated WebP, EXIF data and pixel size?

Knowing how three things behave makes batch jobs easier.

  • Animated WebP: JPG holds a single frame. So for an animated WebP, the tool converts only the first frame and warns you about it.
  • Orientation: The tool applies the EXIF orientation. For example, a phone photo that looked sideways comes out upright.
  • Metadata: The tool does not carry EXIF data such as GPS location into the new file.

The missing metadata cuts both ways. It protects your privacy, because a shared photo cannot reveal by accident where you took it. On the other hand, the shooting date, camera details and copyright notes are gone too. Therefore, keep the original file if you need them.

Pixel size never changes, because the tool does not resize. However, if you need a smaller width and height, use the Image resizer. Keeping format changes and size changes apart also shows you exactly which step costs what.

How do you convert WebP to JPG on an iPhone or Android phone?

Most people meet this problem on a phone. You save an image with Safari or Chrome, then you try to attach it to an application or an email, and the app refuses the file. The reason is simple: what you saved is WebP, not JPG.

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android:

  1. Open this page in your phone's browser.
  2. Tap "Choose images" and find the WebP file in your phone's file picker; you can select several files together.
  3. Then confirm that the target format is JPG and adjust the quality if you like.
  4. Finally, tap "Download".

The JPG lands in your browser's download location. On an iPhone this is usually the Downloads folder in the Files app; on Android it is the Downloads folder. Also, the file never leaves your device, because the conversion happens inside your phone's browser. With many images, the ZIP option saves time on a phone too.

WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG: which one fits your image?

The answer depends on what the image shows and where it goes. In short, JPG suits photos, while PNG suits images that need transparency or crisp text.

  • Photos: JPG keeps the file reasonable and every system reads it.
  • Logos and transparent images: PNG keeps transparency; JPG fills it with a colour.
  • Screenshots and graphics with text: PNG keeps edges sharp, while JPG may leave slight blotches around letters.

On your own website, keeping WebP is usually right, because it helps page speed. So produce JPG only where the other side asks for it. We explain the link between speed and rankings in how does site speed affect SEO. For the role of images in search visibility, see our SEO consulting page. If you want us to rebuild your site's image setup, look at web design. The reverse direction works too, for example with the JPG to WebP converter.

Do your files leave your device, and what about privacy?

No. Your files stay on your device. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, and we never receive or store your images. You need an internet connection only to open the page; after it loads, the work finishes on your device.

That approach helps with sensitive images. For example, you can convert ID photos, signatures or client pictures to JPG without handing them to an upload service. Moreover, because the output carries no EXIF or location data, the JPG you share leaves fewer traces.

One more detail: if you choose WebP as the target and your browser cannot save WebP, the tool says so openly; it never silently gives you another format. If you wonder how images affect page experience, read our Core Web Vitals guide.

Common mistakes when you convert WebP to JPG

  • MistakeRenaming .webp to .jpg by handDo this insteadChanging the extension does not change the content. The file stays WebP, so some apps still reject it. Use the tool for a real conversion.
  • MistakeTurning a transparent logo into a JPG without checking the backgroundDo this insteadJPG cannot store transparency. For example, if the logo goes on a dark background, pick Black or a Custom colour instead of White; if transparency is a must, convert to PNG.
  • MistakeSaving the output as JPG again and againDo this insteadEvery lossy save removes a little detail. Therefore, keep the original WebP and create each JPG from it.
  • MistakeSetting quality to 100% and expecting a smaller fileDo this insteadHigher quality makes the file bigger, while the visible gain is often nil. Start at the default 92% and lower it step by step if size is a problem.
  • MistakeAssuming an animated WebP becomes a JPG animationDo this insteadJPG holds one frame. The tool converts only the first frame and warns you about it.
  • MistakeExpecting EXIF data to surviveDo this insteadThe tool does not carry EXIF or GPS data. So keep the original file if you need copyright or shooting details.
